Freya Kemp hauls Hampshire over line as Somerset stay winless

Three wickets from Freya Davies, half-century from Rhian Southby set up home side

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay06-Jul-2025Freya Kemp proved Hampshire Hawks’ last-over hero to edge a nail-biter against winless Somerset in the Women’s Vitality Blast.Rhianna Southby’s 57 and Ellyse Perry’s 40 had given Hampshire the advantage in chasing 154, but accurate bowling had seen them fall behind the rate. With 11 runs needed off the last over, Kemp pumped a six down the ground before knocking off the remaining runs to give Hawks just their second win in the last seven matches to give them renewed hope of qualifying for finals day.Fran Wilson had given Somerset a defendable total with 55 but it wasn’t enough for the bottom-placed side.Somerset chose to bat first under grey skies, and found a consistent tempo to build partnerships and accumulate runs. Bex Odgers set up the innings with a quickfire 18 filled with cuts to the boundary before Wilson took over to provide the backbone of the innings.Former England batter Wilson had only scored 103 runs in her previous seven innings but a delicious straight drive got her moving. Wilson isn’t known for her power-hitting, with her touch-play a defining part of her international career. That was also the case on this occasion, with deft ramps and paddles helping her reach a 30-ball fifty. She had seen Niamh Holland, Sophie Luff, and Jess Hazell come and go – the former two to the impeccable Bex Tyson – before Amanda-Jade Wellington entered to kick-on in the last six overs.Wilson was run out after a mix-up and a direct hit from extra cover, and while Wellington tried to put off the bowlers with her moving around the crease and funky stances outside off stump, boundaries were hard to find at the death.Somerset managed to find 43 runs off the last five overs, mainly through hard running, with only three boundaries off the bat in that time. Freya Davies capitalised on the last over bat flailing by picking up the wickets of Wellington and Alex Griffiths, and with the earlier wicket of Odgers, returned 3 for 38.Somerset’s 153 felt below par and when Australian superstar Perry got the Hawks off to a flier around short rain delays it appeared to confirm it. Perry, on her home debut, used her immense quality to power the ball to the boundary seven times but met her downfall attempting to scoop Erin Vukusic and was pinned lbw for 40. It was the Croatian’s first Blast wicket. Her opening partner Southby struggled with timing but slowly managed to accumulate and with Kemp found their way to around the required rate with a 68-run stand. But Somerset’s tight bowling, especially from Vukusic and Griffiths gave Hawks 27 to chase in the last three overs.Kemp was dropped on the boundary edge for four, but when Southby was bowled for 57 with 16 still needed in 11 balls, the result was in the balance. But Kemp smashed the second ball of the last over, bowled by Griffiths, over long on before two twos got them over the line with two balls to spare.

Before Dan Burn: Newcastle "leader" is the first player Wilson must ditch

With the news filtering through that Ross Wilson is now joining Newcastle United as the club’s new sporting director, it could well be make or break time for a number of the reserve personnel at St James’ Park who are nearing the end of their current deals.

Indeed, Wilson will want to leave his mark on proceedings, with the likes of Matt Targett surely being let go when his deal expires next summer.

The likes of Kieran Trippier and Fabian Schar, however, will surely be keen to extend their current contracts, which also expire next year, even as they reach both 35 and 33, respectively, having shown they can still offer up plenty of quality as St. James’ Park veterans.

Dan Burn will also want to continue his celebrated Newcastle stay for as long as possible, even if question marks continue to pop up about his suitability as a left-back in Eddie Howe’s XI.

What the future holds for Dan Burn at Newcastle

Burn has become a staple at Newcastle over recent years, with the Blyth-born colossus beaming from ear to ear when he lifted the EFL Cup last year to break the Toon’s long trophy drought, having scored in the unbelievable 2-1 victory.

In total, the 6-foot-7 defender has now tallied up 158 appearances for Howe and Co since joining from Brighton and Hove Albion in 2022, with Burn missing from just one Premier League contest all season long last campaign.

Still, he hasn’t been without his critics this season, with one Toon-based content creator even dubbing Burn’s extended shifts at left-back over recent games as the “stuff of nightmares”.

In particular, the England international notably struggled to close down Bukayo Saka during Newcastle’s late 2-1 collapse against Arsenal, with the usually formidable 33-year-old giving away possession a high 26 times in the process.

With Malick Thiaw’s emergence into the side as an up-and-coming centre-back option, it’s unlikely that Burn will be shoved back into the heart of the backline soon, with the ageing number 33 just hopeful he can remain a consistent starter until his own contract runs out in the summer of 2027.

One of Burn’s Newcastle teammates doesn’t look to have the same luxury of time on his side, however.

Newcastle "leader" is now on borrowed time

When scanning the current makeup of the Magpies’ first-team step-up, there are an awful lot of figures who have been with the club since the very beginning of Howe’s reign.

Nick Pope left Burnley behind for the allure of St. James’ Park during Howe’s first proper summer transfer window, and despite some murmurs last season by journalist Adam Clery that he looks “absolutely petrified” to make an error, he remains Howe’s number one choice all those years down the line.

He does, however, have that same weight on his shoulders that the likes of Trippier and Schar are feeling, as his contract also expires this approaching June.

Jamaal Lascelles is also in this same unwanted boat, but he has been situated on Tyneside since the days of Rafa Benitez, even when his team were locked into a Championship promotion race during the 2016/17 season.

At the time, Lascelles would stand up strong as the Toon’s captain to guide the underachievers back up to the top-flight, with Newcastle royalty in Alan Shearer even going out of his way to label the 31-year-old as a “leader.”

Since then, he has notched up 159 Premier League appearances and counting, but with their Champions League status now nearly a decade from Lascelles’ moment in the spotlight, and his recurring nature in and out of the St James’ treatment room currently, it might well be an apt time to pull the plug on the Derby-born centre-back’s long-winding stay, when his deal ceases to be in June.

Lascelle’s woes with injuries haven’t stopped him from still being seen as a club captain off the pitch, with Howe further reinforcing that he is an “incredible” player to have around the dressing room.

But, with Wilson through the door, and his contract soon to be up, now could be the time to wave goodbye, with Lascelles potentially going on to be a hero for another club, if he can exorcise his injury demons once and for all.

Anderson re-signs; £75m PL star joins: Ross Wilson's dream XI at Newcastle

Newcastle continue their hierarchal re-structure with the appointment of a new technical director.

Celtic have struck gold on Ange signing who's now worth more than Engels

Those of a Celtic persuasion are in mutinous mood right now, and rightly so, having been forced to witness a calamitous summer of transfer activity.

An unbeaten start to the new domestic season has also been overshadowed by last month’s grim Champions League exit, with the failure to properly enhance Brendan Rodgers’ ranks leading up to that tie having undoubtedly backfired.

In the Premiership, away from the chaos, things appear to have gone a little bit stale, with the current crop producing displays that are a far cry from the scintillating style of the glorious Ange Postecoglou era.

The recent drab Glasgow derby was an obvious case in point, with that 0-0 stalemate at odds with Postecoglou’s outfit at their pomp. Just look back to such performances as the 3-0 win over the Ibrox side in February 2022.

Parkhead was at its buoyant best that night, and the football was simply stunning, with the men in green and white almost playing a different game to their beleaguered opponents.

That magic, that ferocious approach, has since been lost.

From plucking bargains from afar under the Aussie, the Hoops have resorted to paying over the odds during the Rodgers regime, with far too many transfer dealings having gone south of late.

Celtic's recruitment record post-Ange

As noted by former Celtic skipper Scott Brown, the club’s recruitment record under Postecoglou was simply “fantastic”, with the experienced coach simply a master at acquiring a hidden gem on the cheap.

Take Matt O’Riley, a player signed for just £1.5m from EFL side MK Dons back in January 2022, before ultimately being sold to Brighton and Hove Albion on a £25m deal in the summer of 2024 – marking a sensational profit.

Such success stories have been few and far between since then, however, with the 2023 summer window proving particularly disastrous. Indeed, of those signed amid Rodgers’ return, only Paulo Bernardo and Hyun-jun Yang are still at the club – albeit with even the Korean having come close to departing for Birmingham City before the recent deadline.

The likes of Gustav Lagerbielke, Maik Nawrocki, Luis Palma and Marco Tilio have all come and gone without so much as leaving a trace, having looked destined to fail from the off amid their limited roles under Rodgers.

While it is too early to judge this summer’s transfer dealings, the recruitment of 12 months ago is also worthy of scrutiny. Adam Idah, for instance, has already been shipped off to Swansea City, while Arne Engels – signed for £11m – has yet to truly establish himself as a regular starter in Glasgow.

Described as “nowhere near the finished article” by his manager, the young Belgian appears to be burdened by such a lofty price tag, with that expensive outlay a constant source of debate among supporters and pundits alike.

The 22-year-old may well still come good, although the race is on to live up to the weight of his transfer fee.

Market Movers

Would the Hoops not have been better off seeking out a bargain instead, in the mould of say Reo Hatate?

How Hatate's value compares to Arne Engels

Reflecting back on that night in the winter of 2022, the rout of Rangers proved a breakout moment for that man Hatate, with the Japanese genius netting two stunning efforts to properly announce himself to the Parkhead faithful.

As per reporter Michael Bridges, Hatate and his compatriots simply “ripped the league to shreds” following their arrival.

Having been signed from Kawasaki Frontale just a few weeks prior, the all-action midfielder quickly made a mockery of his meagre £1.1m price tag, having been a mainstay under both Postecoglou and Rodgers since then.

After chalking up 13 goals and 14 assists in 66 games under the new Nottingham Forest boss, as per Transfermarkt, Hatate has enjoyed a rather similar record under his successor, with 15 goals and 14 assists under his belt from 81 outings.

While Rodgers did hint at the 27-year-old’s “inconsistency” during their first year working together, he did go on to flourish last term, having also got off the mark in 2025/26 with an outrageous effort away at Aberdeen.

That thumping strike emphasises just why the diminutive playmaker is such a “big talent” – in the words of Rodgers – with his overall record of 56 goal involvements in 147 games in all competitions ensuring he has more than made his mark in Glasgow.

Such a stellar impact can also be felt when considering his soaring market value, with Hatate deemed to be worth as much as €13m (£11m), according to Transfermarkt. For comparison, Engels’ value is now said to be around €12m (£10m).

The subject of interest from Serie A side Udinese back in May, before ultimately staying put at Celtic, the 11-cap international looks like a player who will soon rake in a sizeable profit for the club, should he move on in the near future.

In the meantime, however, the hope will be that Hatate can play a central role in trying to revive this limp season for Rodgers and co, with the Hoops in very real danger of merely letting things drift.

Deckchairs in demand as Sussex show they are here to stay

Hove’s trendier influences encroach on timeless day but on-field efforts take upper hand

Alan Gardner11-Apr-2025

Daniel Hughes and Tom Clark both made 49 as Sussex took the upper hand at Hove•Getty Images

There’s an old Stewart Lee routine about the attractions (or otherwise) of moving out of London to live in the countryside, which in its mock juxtaposition of urban decay and rural tranquility riffs on the ludicrous notion that “visible otters” might be a guaranteed part of the estate agent’s package.County cricket can find itself viewed in similarly absurd terms. As a refuge from modernity it is still hard to beat but, with many counties now playing the majority of their cricket at increasingly developed stadiums, some of the prerequisites of the pastoral idyll are missing. If there isn’t a grass bank, a whitewashed pavilion and spectators allowed on the field at tea, is it really the throwback to a bygone era that was advertised? For “visible otters” you might well substitute “available deckchairs”. Luckily at Hove there are still plenty of those – although not many were still untenanted as a crowd of 1,500 sunned themselves on day one of Sussex’s first home fixture since returning to Division One of the Rothesay County Championship. A century stand between Dan Hughes and Tom Clark during the morning session bore the “Good Old Sussex By The Sea” stamp of approval, though a post-lunch collapse of 6 for 53 undid some of that hard work and it took the rustic ball-striking of No. 11 Sean Hunt to eventually secure a batting point.Even here, a short hit from the trendier postcodes of Brighton, there was proof that the game doesn’t exist in a time warp. The latest Sixes Social Cricket venue, where you can sink a few pints while taking aim at virtual bowlers in the indoor batting cages, has just opened at the 1st Central County Ground – replacing Tony Greig’s Café beneath the Sharks Stand. With schools on holiday for Easter, gaggles of children were in attendance, displaying their affiliations to Minecraft and Brighton & Hove Albion as well as Sussex. On the wooden benches by the dressing rooms were a set of tattoos and a man-bun that would not have looked out of place in a nearby hipster coffee joint. There were also a number of spectators wearing the Somerset dragon, perhaps keen to make the pilgrimage and see how The Sussex Cricketer has changed since their team last played a Championship match here in 2015. The local boozer by the entrance to the ground is now a glass-fronted bar beneath a multistorey residential development – but still a decent location to discuss the battles lost and won after Somerset had hauled themselves back into this contest by taking seven wickets during the afternoon session, then stumbled against the Sussex tail before wobbling to the close five down, Fynn Hudson-Prentice claiming 4 for 13 in a spell that included the dismissal of Tom Banton a week on from his record-breaking 371.Sussex, without the services of Ollie Robinson after he sustained a foot injury in the draw against Warwickshire, opted to bat first under blemish-free blue skies and the promise of runs in the sun. Despite losing Tom Haines in the sixth over, bowled through the gate aiming a drive at Lewis Gregory, the partnership between Hughes and Clark suggested that Sussex were in the mood to back up the big scoring of their opening-round trip to Edgbaston, with a dollop of luck and some wayward bowling helping them to 122 for 1 at lunch.Hughes, Sussex’s Australian opener, looks like a cricketer from another age with his clipped moustache and classical push-drives. He was dropped at second slip on 9 by Kasey Aldridge, the Somerset allrounder then adding to his lackadaisical start with a spell of three overs that cost 23. Clark rattled along to 40 off 38 balls but the reintroduction of Gregory and Josh Davey gradually saw the visitors get a handle on the scoring, before Migael Pretorius struck in consecutive overs after the interval to remove both Sussex 49ers – Clark fiddling behind, Hughes lbw shuffling across. With Tom Alsop nicking to slip in between, Sussex had lost three wickets in 10 balls; that became four in 32 when James Coles was caught behind aiming an expansive drive at Gregory. Hudson-Prentice rarely hinted at permanence while adding 38 in partnership with his captain, John Simpson, Aldridge eventually dispatching him with a jaffa that hit the top of off, having switched to the Cromwell Road End with good effect. Danny Lamb fell lbw three balls later as Somerset again strove to take the upper hand. They, too, were missing the services of an England seamer, with Craig Overton rested early in Somerset’s run of five matches in as many weeks. Only Davey maintained the required level of discipline on a surface that offered initial assistance before easing as the ball softened, and Sussex were able to bolster their position from 180 for 7 via half-century stands for the eighth and tenth wickets. Jack Carson looked in good touch before edging Jack Leach to slip, Simpson then falling straight after tea when spooning Davey to cover. Hunt neatly combined the benefits of old-fashioned and new-fangled by clumping 33 off as many balls before losing middle and off stumps to Gregory.Jayden Seales had looked a thoroughly modern tailender in helping Hunt to add 52, and he swiftly proved his worth with the ball, shaping one away from Archie Vaughan to find a low outside edge that was scooped up by the diving Coles at third slip. Coles was in action again when Hudson-Prentice drew Sean Dickson into a flirt with his opening delivery, and it was two in two when Tom Abell was squared up and hit on the back leg. Hudson-Prentice then made Hove feel like Shangri-La La Land as he had Banton caught behind and nightwatcher Davey lbw to cap an enthralling day.

Kusal Mendis, spinners seal series win for Sri Lanka

It was Sri Lanka’s first ODI series win against New Zealand since 2012

Madushka Balasuriya17-Nov-2024Kusal Mendis’ unbeaten 73 trumped Mark Chapman’s 76, as Sri Lanka secured a narrow three-wicket win in the second ODI in Pallekele, and with it seal the series with an unassailable 2-0 lead. It was their first ODI series win against New Zealand since 2012.Having been set a subpar target of 210 in a rain-truncated 47-over game, Sri Lanka were made to work hard on a sluggish surface as New Zealand’s array of spin options kept chipping away. But a string of mini-partnerships was enough to see the hosts through, culminating in an unbeaten eighth wicket stand of 47 off 59 – the best of the innings – between Kusal and Maheesh Theekshana.Michael Bracewell was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors, picking up figures of 4 for 36 in 10 overs. He was one of two bowlers allocated for 10 overs in the innings, alongside Mitchell Santner who ended with miserly figures of 1 for 33, but Sri Lanka smartly recognised their threat and targeted the rest of the attack to sneak home.Earlier a brilliant exhibition of catching had seen New Zealand bowled out for 209, a total that was heavily supplemented by Chapman’s 76 off 81 and Mitchell Hay’s 49 off 62 – they were two of just four New Zealand batters to make it to double digits. Before his heroics with the bat, Theekshana had done his part with the ball grabbing 3 for 31. Jeffrey Vandersay also picked up three, while the tireless Asitha Fernando finished with two scalps. But on a surface where nearly every spinner proved threatening to some degree, it was always going to take a special batting effort to separate the two sides. And Kusal provided that in spades.Having come into bat at the fall of the first wicket inside the fifth over, it wasn’t long before Kusal decided on a more conservative approach. The first ball he faced spun sharply past his forward defence, and then an attempt at his escape shot – the slog sweep – saw a top edge that looped safely over the keeper.Kusal Mendis reached fifty off 84 balls•AFP/Getty ImagesA couple of overs later Kusal was under the microscope once more, after a tight lbw shout went in his favour – a decision that was only upheld on review courtesy of an umpire’s call on impact. These nervy moments meant that Kusal wouldn’t get his first boundary until the 26th delivery he faced. In fact, in total across his innings he would score just the six boundaries; instead, this was an innings marked more by his grit, with 46 singles and two doubles – 67% of his runs – an abnormally high percentage of non-boundary runs for a Kusal Mendis innings. That he did so while struggling with cramps, or quite possibly a groin strain, for most of his innings speaks volumes towards his effort on the night. But this was not a match Mendis could have won on his own. Aside from five-run stand with Kamindu Mendis, Kusal put together meaningful contributions with each of his other partners – 18, 19, 28, 39, 31 and 47 – with each pushing Sri Lanka a little further towards the finish line. One of the most important came with Janith Liyanage, as the pair came together in the 22nd over with Sri Lanka precariously poised on 93 for 5, and Kusal already being impacted by cramps. With New Zealand seeking further breakthroughs, and the pair of Glenn Phillips and Ish Sodhi bowling well in tandem, Liyanage proved the ideal partner to keep rotating the strike and the spin threat at bay. This helped stabilise the innings, but when Liyanage fell, gloving a bouncer from Nathan Smith through to the keeper, Sri Lanka were still 78 off their target.Dunith Wellalage then played his part to perfection, crashing three consecutive boundaries off Smith to shift the momentum decisively. But even so, New Zealand knew they were just one wicket away from entering the Sri Lankan tail. So when Wellalage miscued one to mid-on with still 47 left to get, Sri Lankan minds might have wandered to that second T20I defeat. But Theekshana, who had been unable to see it through in that game, showed far more metal the second time, striking three boundaries in total including a critical six over deep backward point, to help see the game through.Michael Bracewell finished with 4 for 36•AFP/Getty ImagesSuch a nerve-wracking finish was hard to imagine at the halfway point however, after Sri Lanka had done extremely well on either side of two first-innings rain stoppages to strangle the New Zealand innings. The catching was undoubtedly the highlight, where despite dropping some tough chances, Sri Lanka held on to even tougher ones. Avishka Fernando was at the forefront of this excellence, completing two nearly identical grabs, diving forward in the deep to scoop the ball centimetres off the ground, to dismiss both Phillips and and Chapman. And he was not done yet, taking another stellar catch on the run and slide to remove Bracewell. Pathum Nissanka too threw his name in the hat for catch of the match, with a stunning sprint from long-off towards mid-off, culminating in a full-length dive to hold on to a skier from Santner.Sri Lanka’s ground fielding too was on point – even with the caveat of a few sloppy boundary giveaways – with the infielders in particular smothering the visiting batters, and competing for every run. This was highlighted by an astonishing 157 dot balls being played out across the course of the innings – one that had already been shortened to 47 overs due to rain.New Zealand’s best period of the innings came after they had stumbled to 98 for 4 in the 24th over. Here Chapman and Hay put in the time to rebuild the innings, but such was the strangle being exerted by the spinners during the early part of this stand, they scored just 13 runs in the first 41 deliveries faced. But by the end of it, though, the partnership had soared to 75 off 78, as both batters eventually began to take some risks.Sixty-two runs were scored between the 30th and 36th over, as New Zealand might have been eyeing up a total in the region of 250. However on a spinner’s deck, it was Asitha who had the most decisive say, returning for a double-wicket strike to see the backs of Chapman and Bracewell. From that point on, it was a trudge for the visitors as Hay sought to battle it out with the tail. He was the last batter to fall, one short of a maiden ODI fifty.

Club contact Celtic to sign "excellent" 24 y/o with Hoops now ready to sell

A new Celtic transfer rumour has now emerged, with a club reportedly enquiring about the availability of an “excellent” Hoops player.

Celtic linked with exciting attacking players

Brendan Rodgers will know the importance of not resting on his laurels this summer, ensuring top-quality signings arrive who can take his team to the next level.

Exciting attacking players are being mentioned as targets for Celtic between now and the end of the summer transfer window, with Michel-Ange Balikwisha and Louie Barry reportedly among those in the running to arrive at Parkhead.

Barry excelled on loan at Championship side Hull City from Aston Villa last season, scoring 15 goals in just 22 starts in the competition, and he could represent an eye-catching attacking addition with plenty more years ahead of him.

Former Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski has also been linked with a summer move to Celtic, with the 26-year-old currently plying his trade at Girona in Spain, but struggling to make a positive impact there.

Club enquire about "excellent" Celtic player

According to Fussball Europa [via Sport Witness], Austria Vienna have enquired about the availability of Celtic midfielder Hyeok-kyu Kwon, making contact with the Scottish Premiership champions.

The Hoops will not stand in the way of the 24-year-old if a suitable offer arrives and actually prefer a permanent sale over another loan exit, with Rodgers seemingly not considering him an important part of his plans.

Celtic midfielder Hyeok-kyu Kwon.

This summer may feel like the right time for Kwon’s Celtic career to reach its natural conclusion after two years and not even managing a senior appearance for the Hoops, even though Stephen Robinson has praised his ability in the past.

“Kwon has been excellent, he has fitted in really well. Football-wise he has been excellent on the pitch. He has taken to what we are trying to do and it is a compliment to the staff here that we have been trusted to try to develop him because he hasn’t had loads of game time. But Celtic signed him for big money and we can see why. He is a talented boy. He will be available to play.”

Kwon was sent out on loan to Hibernian last season, only managing 12 starts in the league and a further nine appearances from the substitutes’ bench, and it is difficult to see his situation at Parkhead changing.

The 10-cap South Korea Under-23 international is a good midfielder in his own right, but it makes sense for all parties to allow him to move on now after struggling to set Scottish football alight.

Celtic could sign better ST than Yamada in swoop for "tireless" £9m star

Celtic could sign an even better striker than Shin Yamada by moving to bring this star to Parkhead.

ByDan Emery Jul 12, 2025

Kwon’s current Celtic deal doesn’t expire until the summer of 2028, so there is no reason why Celtic can’t receive a fee for his services, possiby bringing in a midfield option of their own in the coming weeks.
