Southampton: Martin dealt injury blow to £60k-p/w "monster" before Leicester

Southampton boss Russell Martin could be dealt another injury blow, as one of his most important players came off injured during their final game of the international break…

How have Southampton started this season?

Southampton winger Samuel Edozie.

The Saints had a miserable 2022/23 season, as they finished 20th in the Premier League and were swiftly dumped to the Championship, after only winning six matches and scoring 25 points.

The South Coast side also lost some of their best players during the transfer window, most notably they sold club legend James Ward-Prowse to West Ham for £30m, Romeo Lavia to Chelsea for £58m and Nathan Tella to Bayer Leverkusen for £20m, in total, which generated £156m in transfer revenue.

Despite losing so many key players before the season started new manager Russell Martin has guided his side to a solid start to the season, as Southampton currently sit seventh in the table on 10 points.

Although they have somewhat started well, the most notable point of their season so far has been their 5-0 thrashing by Sunderland, which ended their unbeaten start to the season.

And it now seems like things could go from bad to worse for the new Saints boss…

As per Daily Echo senior reporter Alex House, Polish defender Jan Bednarek came off in the 34th minute during his nation's 2-0 loss to Albania in the European Qualifiers.

Despite the disappointing result, the 27-year-old Saints titan was one of the Eagles' stand-out performers during the international break.

His most impressive performance was in Poland’s 2-0 win over the Faroe Islands, where he finished the game with the second-highest rating of 7.8, per Sofascore, only behind goalscorer Robert Lewandowski.

Last summer, the £60k per-week defender left Southampton on loan and moved to Aston Villa but by doing so, he angered the St Mary's fanbase after he described his new club Aston Villa as “massive.”

How big a blow is Bednarek's absence?

After he was recalled from his loan in the January transfer window many Southampton fans were quite right to resent his return.

However, since his comeback on the pitch, he has been an integral part of the squad and heralded as one of Southampton's best players

This was confirmed by his Sofascore rating last season – as after rejoining in January, the "monster" – as once hailed by journalist and analyst Sam Tighe – ranked as the Saint's third-best performer with an average rating of 6.93.

His stand-out performances were also backed up by BBC pundit Garth Crooks, after Southampton’s 1-0 win over Chelsea in February.

He said:

“What a defensive display by Southampton at Stamford Bridge.

“Bednarek was the standout defender for me.

“The Poland international has had a difficult season, but put his body on the line on more than one occasion, organised his defence brilliantly and weathered everything Chelsea could throw at him.”

Bednarek’s injury could mean he misses Southampton’s massive Friday night fixture against third-place Leicester, which would undoubtedly be a gutting blow to Martin and the team.

So far in 2023/24, the £60k-per-week centre-back has started every game this season, so it'll be a tough task to replace him, with the burden likely to fall upon recent summer additions Mason Holgate, who joined on loan from Everton, or versatile 19-year-old Shea Charles, who joined on a permanent deal from Manchester City but is typically a defensive midfielder.

Liverpool Make Enquiry Over "Untouchable" £135k-p/w Maestro

Liverpool have made an enquiry over Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde, and there has now been a suggestion the Spanish side may be willing to let him leave this summer…

Who are Liverpool signing this summer?

After the Reds' 1-1 draw against Chelsea in their Premier League opener on Sunday, Jamie Carragher made it clear he believes his former club need to strengthen in two key areas, saying:

"The big worry for me with Liverpool is defensively. The last action sums it up as they had a corner and they nearly conceded a goal at the other end.

"Liverpool need a holding midfielder. They need a real defender, an out-and-out defender who can play right across that back four."

Benjamin Pavard is now emerging as a potential defensive target for Jurgen Klopp, and the Bayern Munich star could fit the bill perfectly, given that he is capable of playing at right-back and centre-back, making him a versatile option.

In terms of holding midfielders, Liverpool have already lost out to Chelsea in the race for Moises Caicedo, and with Romeo Lavia also now poised to move to Stamford Bridge, they have been forced to run the rule over some alternative options.

According to The Secret Scout, the Reds have now "enquired about the situation" of Aurelien Tchouameni and Valverde, with Real Madrid likely to make one of the midfielders available this summer.

With Caicedo and Lavia off to Chelsea, the Madrid duo are now "of serious interest" to Klopp's side, who have now made their first move by contacting the Spanish side over a potential deal.

It is not detailed which player the La Liga club are set to make available, however, a more recent update from David Ornstein indicates it may be Valverde, with the journalist reporting Tchouameni is not available, saying:

"Liverpool among a number of leading clubs who have long-term admiration for Aurelien Tchouameni but Real Madrid see 23yo France int’l as key player & would not consider his departure, while midfielder has no interest in leaving."

How good is Federico Valverde?

The Uruguayan has established himself as a key player for Real Madrid over the past few seasons, making 34 La Liga appearances in the 2022-23 campaign, during which time he amassed a total of seven goals and four assists.

Lauded as "untouchable" by Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti, the £135k-per-week maestro is also a confident dribbler of the ball, ranking in the 91st percentile for progressive carries per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers.

federico-valverde-premier-league-liverpool-transfers

It is fair to say the central midfielder poses a real threat on the front foot, but you could argue that he is not the signing Liverpool need at this moment in time, as he would not offer much to the side defensively, placing in just the eighth percentile for tackling.

Valverde could help improve the Reds' attacking depth, but Klopp could do with bringing in a like-for-like replacement for Fabinho and Jordan Henderson in the latter stages of the summer transfer window, so it could make sense targeting a player who excels defensively.

Wanted pitch to 'take seam out of the picture' – Jarvis

Kyle Jarvis has seen a lot of West Indies batsmen in the first Test, but in 38 overs of hard yakka he has managed to take just three wickets in his comeback match. The plan for Zimbabwe had always been to prepare a pitch that would help spin rather than seam, Jarvis explained after the third day in Bulawayo, and he credited the patience of West Indies batsmen in setting up their commanding second-innings total.”It wasn’t easy out there,” Jarvis said. “The plan going into the game was to take seam out of the picture, with Roach and Gabriel and Holder playing. We did our best to get the ball to reverse, which it did a little bit. But nothing off the pitch really, just dead straight.”Kraigg Brathwaite set the early tone for West Indies with his 229-ball 86, before Roston Chase took advantage of the platform to score an unbeaten 91. Their knocks were part of a combined West Indies effort that has all but batted Zimbabwe out of the game.”They kept it really simple,” Jarvis said. “They didn’t play many sweeps or reverse sweeps. They didn’t run down much. They waited for the bad ball and they put it away. They got 370 and pressed on right at the end, but they had been going at two and a half [runs an over] for most of the day. They’ve just been really patient. Chase played really well, and the way Brathwaite went about his business, facing 230 balls was good. They gave themselves a chance, which is what we should have done in our first innings.”The Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo may be a long, long way from Old Trafford, but Jarvis suggested that the biggest adjustment for him during a return to international cricket after a four-year gap was switching back to the Kookaburra ball.”Old Trafford is a dry pitch,” he said. “It has a little more pace in it than this one though. The biggest adjustment has been the ball. I’ve been using the Dukes for the last four years, and using a Kookaburra now. The Kookaburra is a lot softer, you get a little bit less bounce. The Dukes stays harder for longer, which makes it an easier ball to bowl with as a seamer. The ball has been the biggest difference – your lines and lengths are pretty similar.”With two days still remaining in this Test, and Zimbabwe 429 runs in arrears, Jarvis suggested a draw might now be the most the hosts could hope for. “Looking at record scores, I think the highest score is 418 by any team, so I think it will take an unbelievable effort to do something like that. The pressure of batting in the last innings is going to be tough, so it will take something really special to bat out maybe five sessions, which is what I think they’re going to give us.”Everyone knows it’s going to be tough, but you can’t go out there and be negative and hand the game over. We’ll have to play as well as we possibly can, but you never know. Cricket is a funny game. If they bat for another session, we have to bat out five sessions. I think best case is that we could get a draw out of this game. Scoring 450 is a bit unrealistic, but you never know if we can bat five sessions.”

Man Utd Could Repeat Weghorst Howler With £20m Dutch Target

Fresh from having sealed a deal for Andre Onana last week, Manchester United are reportedly still interested in making a move for Feyenoord stopper Justin Bijlow, as Erik ten Hag seeks to strengthen his goalkeeping department this summer.

What's the latest on Bijlow to Man United?

According to Dutch outlet, 1908.nl, the Red Devils are 'still exploring the market' in their search to find a backup option to £47.2m signing, Onana, with Bijlow a player that remains on United's radar after previously being linked with a move earlier in the window.

As per the report, the Eredivisie side are hoping to have the 25-year-old – who has been valued at around £20m – still on the books for the 2023/24 season, with a new contract offer seemingly in the works.

The need for a new reserve 'keeper comes amid real uncertainty surrounding a number of the goalkeeper's currently at Old Trafford, with Dean Henderson and Nathan Bishop having been heavily linked with moves to Nottingham Forest and Sunderland, respectively, while Tom Heaton has also been the subject of interest from newly-promoted side, Luton Town.

Who is Justin Bijlow?

With those potential departures in the works, it could well be all change for United in the goalkeeping ranks, with the Premier League giants having already allowed long-serving Spaniard, David De Gea to move on after 12 years in Manchester.

Netherlands goalkeeper Justin Bijlow.

While fresh faces are seemingly needed to help provide cover to Onana, it remains to be seen if Bijlow is the right option, despite the 6 foot 2 ace having previously been lauded as "brilliant" by ESPN's Cecilia Lagos.

Ten Hag's desire to look to the Dutch market to find new recruits has not been an overriding success during his time at the Theatre of Dreams, with Lisandro Martinez – who has been dubbed an "absolute monster" by teammate Luke Shaw – arguably the most successful Eredivisie arrival.

Martinez's Ajax colleague, Antony, endured a muted start to life in England after scoring just four league goals last season, while Rotterdam native Tyrell Malacia – who played alongside Bijlow at Feyenoord – has been a useful, albeit unspectacular squad option, having started just 14 top-flight games last term.

Amid those mixed fortunes, United were also seemingly stung by the arrival of another Dutch asset in the form of Wout Weghorst, with the 30-year-old striker having joined on loan from Burnley in January to help provide further depth to the forward line.

Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst.

While previously rather prolific earlier on in his career – having notably bagged 45 goals in just 86 games for AZ Alkmaar – the 6 foot 6 marksman was unable to successfully replicate that impact in the Premier League, having failed to score a single top-flight goal in the second half of last season.

With just two goals to his name in total in 31 games in all competitions, the one-time Wolfsburg man undoubtedly failed to have the desired effect, having been described as "not good enough" to play for the club – or for his country – by legendary compatriot, Ruud Gullit.

The fear then will be that United may repeat that transfer howler by bringing in another Netherlands international in the form of Bijlow, with the latter man having also been the subject of criticism for his displays for Oranje, as pundit Willem van Hanegem recently stated:

"I just thought he was very bad at goalkeeping with the Dutch national team. For him, it was blunders. You have to be honest. If he doesn’t keep (the goal) well, he’s not good."

That stinging assessment should have alarm bells ringing back at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils unable to afford a repeat of their Weghorst mistake.

Eskinazi grit keeps Middlesex above water

Stevie Eskinazi’s career-best, unbeaten 178 was the mainstay for Middlesex as they ground to within striking distance of Warwickshire

The considerable fillip Warwickshire drew from dismissing Sam Robson for a third-ball duck was counterbalanced by a century from Stevie Eskinazi in which the South Africa-born batsman produced some good, aggressive strokeplay but also had to show some gritty qualities and ride his luck.Eskinazi, whose 157 against Yorkshire at Scarborough this time last year was one of the key innings of Middlesex’s title-winning season, doubled his tally of career first-class centuries to four with his second of this season, consolidating his position as leading run-scorer.Although born in Johannesburg, Eskinazi has an English mother and a Zimbabwe-born father and after playing some junior cricket in Hampshire moved with his family to Perth, in Western Australia, where he played representative state cricket at under-17 and under-19.Goodness knows where that leaves him in terms of nationality, although that is a matter for another day. For the moment, he is unbeaten on 178, having overtaken his Scarborough scored to guarantee himself a new career-best with his 23rd four after more than five hours at the crease.By the close, against the team propping up the table and desperate to find a first win, he had hit 24 fours and pulled Boyd Rankin for three sixes, which were impressive statistics, although he had been well into three figures before he began to look properly comfortable. At times earlier he had looked anything but, as was illustrated, even on 116 and 124 against a ball that was 55 overs old, when he twice edged Rankin to the boundary through gaps in the cordon.Another difficult over earlier in the day had seen Rikki Clarke beat him twice but somehow miss the stumps. There was a close call on a run-out too and, not long afterwards, a sharp chance offered to wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose when Jeetan Patel entered the attack after 31 overs and Eskinazi was on 56.All of that followed a massive appeal for a catch in the gully off the first ball he faced, which was turned down on the basis that the deflection was off pads only. How different the day might have been had the finger gone up at that moment, given that Keith Barker, spearing the ball in from around the wicket, had dismissed Robson leg-before with the immediately previous delivery. Robson has twice hit a double-hundred against Warwickshire. But if he was lucky at times, Eskinazi might reasonably claim he earned it on a pitch of unreliable bounce that had a nasty surprise in store for a number of batsman.Earlier in the day, Barker had been denied a half-century with the bat when he was deceived into playing too soon at a ball from Tim Murtagh, connecting with a leading edge. Murtagh, going down low in his follow-through, took a good return catch.Nick Compton suffered in a more painful way, hit first in the box and then on the inside of the left knee by balls that did not get up. The second blow forced him to retire on 12, although he was able to return after the fall of the next wicket, when Patel’s second ball accounted for Dawid Malan, who went back to cut but could only nudge the ball into the gloves of Ambrose, who this time held the chance, albeit none too tidily.Like Nick Gubbins, who was left out of this match through lack of runs, Compton has not had a productive season. It would have been a toss up between the two of them as to who stood aside to make way for Robson’s return from the Lions. Compton’s hundred against Essex last week came at just the right moment. He did not look vastly more on top of things in his second spell at the crease and had reached 33 when Clarke returned for a new spell and had him caught behind off a thin edge with his second delivery. That left Middlesex 195 for 3, following which a terrific catch from Matt Lamb at point in the next over ensured Paul Stirling’s stay was brief, the 20-year-old hanging on to a full-blooded cut off Rankin. After a mostly sunny day, Patel increasingly came into his own deep into the final session, when he had John Simpson caught off bat and pad at short leg and Ryan Higgins caught behind, feathering a catch after shaping to cut.Spin could become a bigger factor still on the last two days, so Middlesex will look to Eskinazi to squeeze out a few more runs yet to give them a lead.

Liverpool Exploring Swoop To Sign "Complete" £21m Destroyer As Fabinho Upgrade

An update has emerged on Liverpool's search for further reinforcements in the middle of the park ahead of the 2023/24 campaign…

What's the latest Liverpool transfer news?

According to Football Insider, the Reds are exploring the possibility of a swoop to sign Crystal Palace central midfielder Cheick Doucoure during the summer transfer window.

The report claims that Jurgen Klopp could snap the impressive battler, who joined the Eagles from Lens for £21m last year, as a replacement for Fabinho.

Liverpool's Brazil international has been the subject of a £40m offer from Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ittihad Club and The Guardian have claimed that it is 'likely' the former AS Monaco star moves on from Anfield.

The Mersey giants have already made two additions to their midfield ranks this summer, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister both having been signed on permanent deals to bolster the manager's options in that area of the pitch.

How good is Cheick Doucoure?

Klopp could secure a masterstroke by selling the ageing Fabinho and replacing him with Doucoure heading into next season as the Palace titan's performances last term suggest that he has the quality to be a big upgrade on the Brazilian.

Liverpool would be signing a player who has already proven themselves in the Premier League, as opposed to someone from a foreign league who may or may not be able to adapt to English football. This could allow him to hit the ground running in August instead of needing a period to adjust to the division.

Doucoure averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.97 across 34 top-flight matches for Roy Hodgson's side last season, which placed him fourth within their squad.

Fabinho, meanwhile, averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.87 over 36 league matches for the Reds, which was the 13th-highest score in the team.

Liverpool midfielder Fabinho.

Defensively, the Mali international came out on top with an impressive 3.9 tackles and interceptions per match, compared to the former Ligue 1 ace's 2.8 per outing. In fact, no Liverpool player – in any position – made more than Doucoure's 1.6 interceptions per game.

This suggests that the Palace enforcer, who was once hailed as a "complete" player by his former Eagles boss Patrick Vieira, has the defensive quality to be a destroyer in midfield for Liverpool.

He can constantly disrupt the play by cutting out opposition attacks on a regular basis, which means that the talented ace can protect the back four.

The 23-year-old tank could ease some of the pressure on the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate by winning possession back for the Reds before the ball gets that far. Whereas, Fabinho made interventions less frequently throughout the 2022/23 Premier League campaign, which suggests that he is not as effective in such a role.

This is also backed up by the fact that the Brazil international was dribbled past more times per game (1.1) than Doucoure was for Palace (0.7).

Opposition players found it easier to bypass the Liverpool defensive midfielder whilst the Palace powerhouse was able to put his foot in to stop them from going past him.

Therefore, Klopp could land a big upgrade on Fabinho by signing Doucoure before the end of the summer transfer window.

Chelsea Could Bin Gallagher By Signing £43m Wonderkid

Chelsea are reportedly interested in Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Rayan Cherki, in a move that could add significant firepower to Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

The Blues will be looking to right their wrongs from last season, after registering a disastrous 12th-place finish, 27 points away from the top four and miles from where the club is expected to be.

Pochettino is in for a busy summer at Stamford Bridge, as he gets to work on revamping the shell-shocked side he inherited from Frank Lampard, with changes to be made in and around the squad.

News emerging last week suggested that the Blues are eyeing Lyon’s teen sensation Cherki, with journalist Simon Phillips claiming that Chelsea are ‘exploring’ the idea of signing the Frenchman.

A separate report last month suggested that the French side would want a fee in the region of €50m (£43m) for the midfielder, making him a reasonably priced option for the west Londoners, who spent around £600m over last season’s windows.

Where could Rayan Cherki fit in at Chelsea?

Hailed as a “wonderkid” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the 19-year-old could prove to be a perfect asset for Pochettino to have on board at the Bridge.

A pivotal area that the Argentine is expected to get to work on is the attack, considering the Blues netted just 38 goals in 38 league games last campaign, highlighting a lack of clinical spirit and creativity in the final third.

There are plenty of areas for the former Tottenham boss to explore and manipulate, and lots of talent to both express and expel.

Criticised as being “so poor” by members of the media, Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher could see Pochettino secure an upgrade on his services in the middle of the park, should he opt to sign Cherki.

A product of Chelsea’s academy, Gallagher endured several loan spells before getting regular game time in the squad last season, however, the Englishman has failed to make an impact sufficient enough to aid the side’s woes in the final third.

At 19, Cherki could claim the 23-year-old’s place in Pochettino’s plans, with his numbers painting an exciting picture for the Blues to imagine their future to be in attack.

rayan-cherki-lyon

When comparing Gallagher and the Frenchman’s numbers over their respective 2022/23 league campaigns, it’s harsh viewing for the Epsom-born player who could face the reality of falling down the pecking order.

As per FBref comparisons, the teenager achieved a greater threat in his distribution, as highlighted through his average of 6.92 progressive passes per 90 to Gallagher’s 5.83, as well as averaging 3.17 key passes to his 1.17 per 90.

Another area of his game that Cherki could bolster Chelsea’s midfield with are his capabilities on the ball, topping the charts in Ligue 1 last season by registering 6.39 progressive carries per 90, scoring higher than Lionel Messi in this area, via FBref.

Gallagher managed an average of 2.22 progressive carries per 90 in the Premier League, suggesting the ways that the teenager could add to the Blues’ attack with his youthful and energetic spark in possession that could greatly benefit those around him.

Pochettino has a job on his hands this summer, however, the Argentine could get Chelsea back to familiar highs with a positive transfer window and a chance to craft his side.

Liverpool Could Sign £34m New Steven Gerrard

Liverpool are a club that boasts one of the richest histories in the English game, however, had only briefly returned to the pinnacle before they were dragged back down.

Fans had to wait 30 painstaking years before a Premier League title came to Anfield, with FA Cup, EFL Cup and Champions League victories having supplemented Jurgen Klopp’s success.

The hope is that, following a year of rebuilding and steady progression, this summer could mark the catalyst to once again pit them against the imperious treble-winning Manchester City.

If anyone can topple them, it is surely the Reds, who remain in a prime spot despite their tough recent campaign. After all, they are the only side other than Pep Guardiola's to boast a league title since 2017, having pushed them further than any other team.

Having already secured the acquisition of Alexis Mac Allister, the German tactician will be well aware that this is not enough to return them to the top alone.

Fortunately for fans, further reports have emerged this month continuing to link them with a swoop for Gabri Veiga.

Despite his €40m (£34m) price tag, he could actually pose another coup, especially given how his early-career form mirrors that of a true Anfield legend.

Could Gabri Veiga emulate any Liverpool legends?

Whilst one journalist, simply titled Rimedi, referred to the Spaniard as a “baby Kaka”, it is instead Steven Gerrard that it could be argued the 21-year-old truly imitates.

After all, in his prime, the Scouse general was actually an attacking midfielder, full of energy, passion, aggression and, above all, immense quality.

Viega seems like he is in possession of all of these attributes, having enjoyed a standout year for Celta Vigo in his homeland.

Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga.

As a childhood fan of the club he stars for, the youngster’s tally of 11 goals and four assists in La Liga from midfield is a startling figure. When compared to other midfielders across Europe, he also ranks in the top 1% for non-penalty goals and the top 12% for progressive carries per 90, via FBref.

For comparison, although it was under the pragmatic stylings of Gérard Houllier, the former Aston Villa manager could only muster 15 goal contributions of his own across all competitions at the same age, 21. However, in his true prime he was a real offensive threat, even notching 38 goal contributions across just one year in the 2005/06 campaign.

Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig sought to outline the other qualities that have helped make Veiga shine, noting his strengths as: “pace, passing, technique, shooting, off-the-ball movement, bravery, work rate”.

These are all attributes that saw Gerrard earn such success early in his glistening career, in which Jamie O’Hara has told talkSPORT (via Anfield Watch) that he was “the best midfielder the Premier League has ever seen.”

Although Veiga is unlikely to reach those levels that very few ever have, his emergence as a similar type of bustling goal-scoring midfielder could help rebuild Klopp’s dynasty, to once again make them challengers for the elite competitions.
