Root: England must 'express themselves in right way' to save second Test

Free-flowing approach from England’s batters came unstuck in first innings, but senior batter backs talent to fight back

Andrew Miller05-Dec-2025Despite a gruelling day in the field, studded with five dropped catches, Joe Root remains adamant that England are still in touch with Australia in the second Test at the Gabba, but says that any prospect of a fightback will require their batters to “express themselves in the right way” for the remainder of a must-win match.Root himself did just that in England’s first innings, finishing unbeaten on 138 to record his maiden Test hundred in Australia, and his 40th overall. Too many of his team-mates failed to provide the requisite support, however, with Harry Brook’s carefree knock of 31 leading his former team-mate, Stuart Broad, to question his game awareness during a stint on Australian radio. In addition to four ducks, Zak Crawley’s 76 was England’s only other score of note, until Jofra Archer joined Root in a free-wheeling last-wicket stand of 70 in 9.4 overs. That shortcoming had been set in stark relief by the close of the second day, with Australia strongly placed on 378 for 6, a lead of 44, thanks to double-figure contributions from each of the eight batters so far used. No-one could go past Jake Weatherald’s 72, but after a brace of 60s from Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, and 45 from Cameron Green, Alex Carey remained unbeaten at the close on 46.England’s standards were challenged throughout a tough day, with Australia rattling along at more than five runs an over, while Will Jacks’ anonymity with the ball has already placed a huge burden on their four-man seam attack. They did manage to claim three wickets in the floodlit final session, including two in an over from a hard-toiling Brydon Carse. However, they also let slip four of those chances – including a particularly culpable drop from Carse at short cover off Michael Neser.Related

Root lifts weight of the world with an ironic shrug

“It’s clear we weren’t our best at that phase of the game,” Root told TNT Sports at the close. “But the way that we dragged things back, by managing to take those wickets in a cluster, it shows what the nature of this game can be like, especially with the pink ball.”In the wake of their first-Test defeat, England’s decision not to play in a three-day floodlit match in Canberra came in for some criticism. While the nature of the contest arguably vindicated that move from a batting and bowling point of view, the chance to replicate a fielding session under the floodlights was perhaps an opportunity lost for the visitors.Root, however, insisted England had worked hard on their fielding drills in their practice sessions at the Gabba.”It is different to a white ball,” he said. “We get a lot of exposure to [floodlit cricket] in ODI cricket and T20 cricket, but it is slightly different. But you still back yourself. We practice really hard for the five days leading into it. We made sure we got our work done. Unfortunately, it’s just one of those days where a few didn’t quite stick to hand. We’ve got to make sure we stay confident, we stay up and, when we get those chances later on in the fixture, we’re ready to take them.Marnus Labuschagne raised his second fifty of the series•Darrian Traynor/Getty Images”We’ve obviously got some more work to do tomorrow, but we’re certainly well and truly in this game. More than anything we’ve got to come out with a huge amount of energy and positivity. We know our best cricket can turn a game very quickly, so we’ll turn up tomorrow with that right attitude. We know that, if we’re anywhere near our best, then very quickly this game can turn in our favour.”First things first, Root acknowledged, England must claim Australia’s final four wickets in the daylight hours.”If we get things right in the morning, and go about things as a team in the correct fashion, then we can put ourselves in a really strong position on a wicket which looks like it’s plating,” Root said. “It looks like there might be a few cracks to work with later on in the game. But clearly, we’ve got to look at tomorrow morning first and foremost, and get things right there.”However, the focus is already turning to England’s crucial second innings – which will begin not only with memories of Root’s resilience on the first day, but of how Australia themselves have gone about hunting down England’s score with aggression allied to sensible shot selection. The contrast with England’s approach, particularly against Mitchell Starc who struck in the first over of a new spell on three occasions in his first-innings 6 for 75, was telling.”When we get out there with the bat, the quality that we have and the talent that’s in that dressing room can go out there and express themselves in the right way on that surface to go and get a big score, which could be very tricky batting last on that surface.””I’ve got quite a clear plan how I score my runs,” he added. “I’ve just got to back myself and understand that, if I do that for long periods of time and make good decisions, I’ll be successful.”Labuschagne, whose partnerships with Weatherald and Smith were key to Australia’s strong position, acknowledged that his dismissal for 65 – just as the floodlights were kicking in – was ill-timed, but his proactive 78-ball innings had still been an ideal template for the conditions.”I would like to be a bit more resilient … getting out on the stroke of the changeover between day and night was not ideal,” he said. “But you’ve just got to keep telling yourself as the batter, it’s just one ball at a time. If you’re thinking too far ahead, you start reading into a ball that might have bounced more off a crack or hit you. You’ve got to stay in the moment as much as you can.”If you’re bowling good balls in the channel at the Gabba, it’s tough to score with the extra bounce. But it was a nice wicket. Obviously, it’s a little bit cracky here and there, but the majority of the times the balls hit the wicket, it was really nice.”The two guys at the top just grabbed that momentum of the game early, and we were almost able to piggyback their momentum, and continue to put pressure on.”

Então, comecei a ganhar confiança.

Pep Guardiola admits Rodri is 'suffering' after latest injury setback with Ballon d'Or winner still 'weeks' away from Man City return

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says star midfielder Rodri is "suffering" due to a troublesome hamstring injury. The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner picked up the issue in early October, just months on from returning from a long-term knee problem. And while the Spain international is "getting better", he is "struggling" with this newer setback.

Rodri wasn't getting carried away

When Rodri returned to the City team after nine months out with an anterior cruciate ligament injury earlier this year, he knew it would take time to return to the form that earned him the Golden Ball.

In late June, he said at the Club World Cup: "I feel very, very strong, to be honest. The process was long, but I was taking my time. The most important thing was to keep focused and be strong. Don't be sad or whatever. One day I'll come back and this day has finally come and I'm very excited to play again. I know it's still going to be months until I reach my level, but I'm so happy."

At the start of the new season, City did their best to ease Rodri back into action but his injury issues have reared their ugly head again, something Guardiola has bemoaned.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportRodri 'struggling' with new injury

Rodri sustained this hamstring injury against Brentford on October 5, a game he only lasted 22 minutes in. The 29-year-old has played just one minute since then, as he appeared as a late substitute against Bournemouth on November 2. And it seems he will have to be patient for a while yet.

Guardiola told reporters on Friday: "Do you know what it means playing without the best player in the world two seasons ago? Our main player, when we won the Treble and playing 70 games. [Then] during one year and a half [years] without him. Do you know what we miss? I want him back now…here. He is suffering, he is struggling because he wants to come back, but I want to protect him. I want to be sure right now that we minimise the risk. This is what we want. I want him desperately right now, in Madrid, or the next one but after that six more weeks he is out? No sense. When you have an injured ACL, your body is completely different."

Rodri on 'another level'

City currently sit five points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal and while they haven't been at their best, they are still title contenders. But it seems Guardiola thinks they would be in a much better position if Rodri had been available for much of this campaign.

He added: "Rodri is another level of the players. If Rodri came on for the last 20 minutes against Fulham, put him in the middle and do you know what is the effect? Just his presence, not even touching the ball? The other 10 players feel safe and they play better. What will you do, you're a football player or you are a journalist, over 18 months you cannot do your job. You want to write, you want inspiration and show how good you are and you cannot do it. How do you feel? It feels bad. Of course, he is strong and in some moments he is sad. I would not be happy if he is not sad or concerned. Ahead of us, we have many nightmare things to live. He has to be there. He will be there."

While Rodri continues his injury rehab, his City side host high-flying Sunderland at the Etihad on Saturday afternoon. If results go their way this weekend, they could close the gap to Mikel Arteta's Arsenal to two points, should the Gunners lose at third-placed Aston Villa.

On newly-promoted Sunderland, Guardiola added: "They deserve to be where they are. Momentum can happen after a few games but after 14 fixtures in the Premier League with these opponents? To be in that position, they deserve it."

Crystal Palace eye Harry Kane's team-mate! Eagles line up move for £30m Bayern Munich ace in January

Crystal Palace are reportedly exploring an ambitious January move for Bayern Munich right-back Sacha Boey, with the £30 million-rated French defender emerging as a serious target amid Daniel Munoz’s injury and the club’s packed winter schedule. With Oliver Glasner pushing for reinforcements, Palace believe a cut-price deal could strengthen their Champions League push.

  • Crystal Palace eyeing move for Bayern's Boey

Crystal Palace have placed Bayern Munich defender Boey on their list of January options, as per The Mirror, as Glasner looks to reinforce his squad during a hectic winter run. The club face nine games in 27 days, stretching their resources at a time when Munoz’s knee injury has highlighted a pressing need for another right-sided full-back. The Eagles are also balancing multiple competitions, including the Premier League top-four race, the Conference League campaign, and an upcoming Carabao Cup quarter-final against Arsenal.

Boey, who joined Bayern for £30m in January 2024, is thought to be available for around £13 million ($17.3m) this winter, making him an attractive opportunity in a market where Palace must maximise value. His athletic profile and experience at the highest level match Glasner’s requirements for a wing-back who can operate aggressively on both sides of the ball. With Nathaniel Clyne now 34 and requiring careful management, Palace see Boey as a reliable, long-term option rather than just temporary cover.

Crystal Palace’s January activity will also be influenced by ongoing contract negotiations, headlined by Glasner's own deal expiring at the end of the season. The Austrian manager wants reinforcements to help sustain the club’s impressive form, and the board understand that their winter strategy will play a role in whether he eventually signs an extension.

Boey part of Crystal Palace's potential overhaul incase of summer sales

Crystal Palace’s move for Boey reflects a broader strategic shift as the club attempts to solidify its place among England’s top-performing sides. Their FA Cup triumph last season helped elevate expectations, and their current position in the Premier League’s top four has further validated Glasner’s high-intensity, structurally disciplined approach. Recruiting a player of Boey’s calibre would signal the club’s intention to maintain momentum rather than merely survive the winter congestion.

The futures of several key contributors also loom large, with Guehi attracting interest from Bayern, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid. While Palace do not anticipate losing him until the summer, the club are actively monitoring central defenders like Ousmane Diomande, Ismael Doukoure, Joel Ordonez and Odilon Kossounou as part of their succession planning. This approach demonstrates that Palace’s recruitment team are planning for multiple eventualities rather than reacting to emergencies.

  • Boey's massive struggles at Bayern Munich

Boey’s availability stems largely from his challenging tenure at Bayern Munich, where injuries and managerial changes have derailed his initial promise. After arriving as the most expensive export in Turkish Super Lig history, he struggled for rhythm due to muscle issues and fell behind other options in Vincent Kompany’s defensive rotation. Despite limited minutes, his underlying numbers remain impressive, suggesting a player still capable of operating at an elite level with the right environment and consistent playing time.

Crystal Palace believe they can offer exactly that environment. Glasner’s wing-back system demands pace, stamina and defensive awareness—qualities Boey displayed consistently at Galatasaray and flashes of at Bayern. His ability to progress the ball and cover ground at speed makes him an ideal fit for a tactical setup that relies heavily on vertical transitions and wide overloads, particularly on the right flank.

Additionally, Boey also offers insurance in the event that transfer interest in Munoz escalates toward the summer, where Barcelona and Liverpool remain attentive. Palace would prefer to keep Munoz, but the presence of a sell-on clause owed to Genk adds another variable to the financial equation.

Crystal Palace to continue talks with Bayern over Boey

Crystal Palace are expected to continue talks with Bayern Munich in the coming weeks, with a deal likely to progress once Glasner and the board finalise priorities for January. The manager’s contract discussions will resume around mid-January, and the outcome of the transfer window could play a major role in determining his long-term commitment. The chance to add Boey early in the window would boost both squad depth and the club’s ability to navigate a demanding fixture period.

Bayern, meanwhile, are open to negotiations as they seek to streamline their squad and reallocate resources under Kompany. Boey’s lack of game time and the reduced asking price reflect the club’s willingness to sanction his departure if suitable terms can be agreed. For Palace, this represents a rare opportunity to acquire a Champions League-quality defender for a fraction of his original cost.

Cubs Veteran Bashes First Career Walk-Off Home Run at 40 Years Old

The Chicago Cubs escaped with a 5–3 win at home against the Baltimore Orioles Sunday, thanks to a bit of late heroics from veteran infielder Justin Turner.

Turner came to the plate with the score tied in the bottom of the ninth, and proceeded to hit a walk-off two-run home run off Orioles reliever Keegan Akin to clinch the victory. It was the first walk-off home run in the regular season in Turner's career, which has spanned 17 seasons and 1,736 games.

Never before had Turner hit a walk-off home run, but at the twilight of his career at age 40, he got the job done in order to give the Cubs an important win against Baltimore. Even more impressive, he did so as a pinch-hitter, stepping in during a dire spot and coming through with a home run the likes of which he'd never managed to hit in his near two-decade long career.

On the year, Turner now has three home runs and 15 RBIs, having been used as more of a bench piece for Chicago. Across 58 games, he has a .616 OPS and a total of eight extra base hits. Though his production has slowed, he was still able to come up with some clutch heroics to clinch a series victory against one of his former teams.

Man City offer Real Madrid shock swap deal to sign “the next De Bruyne”

Manchester City have now reportedly offered Real Madrid a shock swap deal in an attempt to sign a young player that Pep Guardiola loves.

Man City targeting Real Madrid star

The big concern that Man City had in the opening weeks of the Premier League campaign was their list of goalscorers. When it wasn’t Erling Haaland, it was difficult to pinpoint just who would step up for Guardiola’s side. As we approach Christmas, however, to say that is no longer an issue would be an understatement.

Phil Foden has particularly stepped up as of late and even defenders such as Josko Gvardiol are getting in on the act, scoring twice in City’s last three Premier League games.

Full of praise for Foden after yet another excellent display on Saturday, Guardiola told reporters: “Phil is incredible.

“He is scoring a lot of goals. He came to me after the game and said he didn’t feel well today and look what happened how he runs, in behind, regain the ball. When he is in this momentum and this mood, he is a gift and a diamond. He is top.”

City have now cut Arsenal’s lead at the top of the Premier League to just two points as they look to make up for last season and get back on top in English football.

The Citizens could get one over on their title rivals.

ByTom Cunningham Dec 6, 2025

With 2026 around the corner too, several rumours are beginning to surround the potential business that the Citizens could complete and that includes a shock Real Madrid star.

Reports have claimed that Man City are targeting a move to sign Arda Guler from the Spanish giants, despite Foden’s recent resurgence. The Turkish midfielder has been one of few players to benefit from Xabi Alonso’s arrival in Spain and those at the Etihad are now reportedly ready to sacrifice one of their own stars to secure his signature.

Man City offer Real Madrid shock swap deal

According to reports in Spain, Man City have now offered Rodri in a swap deal to sign Guler from Real Madrid in 2026. Guardiola is reportedly a huge fan of the 20-year-old and could bid farewell to one of his most important players to get the deal over the line.

It would undoubtedly be the most unexpected deal of the year. Rodri may still be recovering from his ACL injury, but there is still no one better in his position when he is 100%. Would Man City really sacrifice their Ballon d’Or winner?

What’s more, the question must also be asked as to whether City even need Guler? With Foden and Rayan Cherki competing for that No.10 role, finding a place in their side for the Madrid star would arguably be fairly difficult. That said, he has been billed as “the next Kevin De Bruyne” by one journalist.

Nonetheless, it is a deal that Real Madrid are not willing to take at this time, and that should come as little shock after Alonso told reporters: “With his (Guler) quality, he’s a mix between Özil and Guti.

“Guti had that vision and finesse to link play or operate closer to goal, and with Mesut I enjoyed football so much. Arda has that something special — that natural talent you can’t teach.”

Man City willing to launch £100m+ bid to sign 18-y/o star who's been compared to Yamal

Nottingham Forest could launch 2026 move for £44m striker compared to Tevez

Nottingham Forest could launch a 2026 move to sign an “instinctive finisher” likened to Carlos Tevez, but they may have to shell out a club-record fee to get a deal done.

Forest eyeing new striker amid Arnaud Kalimuendo uncertainty

Despite only moving to the City Ground during the summer, Arnaud Kalimuendo’s future is already in doubt, with it recently being revealed the striker wants to leave, and AC Milan have now made contact over a deal.

Paris FC, Stuttgart and AS Roma have also been named as potential suitors for the striker, who hasn’t made the best of starts to life in the Premier League, failing to find the back of the net in his opening seven matches.

Igor Jesus hasn’t exactly been prolific in front of goal either, scoring just once in 14 Premier League outings, while Chris Wood may be in the latter stages of his career at 34, and the New Zealander has been struggling on the injury front, not featuring since the 3-0 defeat against Chelsea in October.

Consequently, Sean Dyche may be eager to bring in a new striker next year, and a report from Tuttosport (via FC Inter News) has now revealed that Nottingham Forest have now joined the race for Bologna centre-forward Santiago Castro.

Aston Villa are also interested in signing Castro, courtesy of his performances in Italy this season, and both English clubs could launch a move next summer, with the Serie A side potentially set to hold out for a fee of around €40m – €50m (£35m – £44m).

Inter Milan have shown interest in the striker too, but Bologna are reluctant to sanction a departure, and will look to secure his future by offering him a bumper new contract in the coming weeks.

"Instinctive finisher" Castro likened to Tevez

Scout Ben Mattinson has spoken very highly of the 21-year-old in the past, comparing him to former Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez, while also describing the youngster as an “instinctive finisher” and adding: “His movement, acceleration and athleticism enables him to lead the line and be a constant threat to a defence. Loves to run in behind but also drop deep or interchange. A complete #9 profile.”

Nottingham Forest make approach for Matic-like starlet who could replace Anderson

Forest have slapped a £100 million price tag on the latter’s head amid growing interest.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 6, 2025

The Argentinian has regularly been amongst the goals this season too, scoring five in 17 matches in all competitions, and he recently headed home a late winner to ensure Bologna progressed past Parma in the Italian Cup.

With none of Dyche’s current strikers setting the world alight, particularly Kalimuendo, it would be ideal to bring in a new option in 2026, and Castro is at the right age to be a long-term success at the City Ground, but £44m would be a club-record transfer fee.

Odegaard upgrade: Arsenal have made a move to sign £88m “generational talent”

Arsenal got back to winning ways on Wednesday night, with a 3-0 demolition of Club Brugge in the Champions League.

It was a much-needed result following their 2-1 loss away to Aston Villa in their last Premier League match, and the fifth time this season the Gunners have won after dropping points.

There is something different about Mikel Arteta’s side this season, a sense that this is finally the year in which they’ll get over the finishing line.

Perhaps in a bid to ensure that happens, reports now suggest Arsenal are making a move to sign a seriously exciting attacker next year, someone who could be an upgrade on Martin Odegaard.

Arsenal target Odegaard upgrade

Arsenal did go unusually big in the summer transfer window, but with a potential league title and more on the line this season, they’re being linked with a plethora of potential game-changing talents ahead of the January window.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

RB Leipzig’s £87m Yan Diomande, for example, has been touted for a move to the Emirates, as has Real Madrid’s Rodrygo.

However, as brilliantly talented as those two players are, their positions mean that neither would represent an upgrade on Odegaard, unlike Arda Güler.

Yes, according to a recent report from Spain, Arsenal have reignited their interest in the Turkish wonderkid.

In fact, alongside the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United, the report claims that the Gunners have already made their move to sign the Madrid star.

However, the Spanish giants are reportedly still unsure whether they want to keep the 20-year-old, and if not, another report from earlier this month stated that a fee of £88m might be required to get them to sell.

In all, this could be a complicated and costly transfer to get over the line, but given Güler’s ability and potential, it’s one Arsenal should fight for, even if it’s bad news for Odegaard.

How Güler compares to Oedegaard

Now, one of Güler’s best traits is the fact that he can be moved around a bit and, if the manager needs him to, do a job out wide.

However, while he can do this, it would be foolish to sign him to play him in wide areas, as he is now spending most of his time in attacking midfield and playing very well there.

In other words, were Arsenal to sign the Madrid star, one of his main rivals for game time would be Odegaard, but who’d come out on top?

Well, starting with their raw output, it’s the Turkish superstar who comes out on top, and quite comfortably at that.

For example, in 21 appearances this season, totalling 1365 minutes, the “generational talent”, as described by journalist Dean Jones, has scored three goals and provided seven assists, averaging a goal involvement every 2.1 games, or every 136.5 minutes.

In contrast, the Gunners’ captain has provided just two assists in 12 appearances this season, totalling 587 minutes, which is a goal involvement every six games, or every 293.5 minutes.

Okay, what about their underlying numbers, then? Who comes out on top when you take a look under the hood?

Unfortunately for the Norwegian maestro, it is once again his potential rival who comes out looking better, although it is a little closer this time.
