Nottingham Forest really want title-winning manager amid good Marinakis relationship

Nottingham Forest manager Ange Postecoglou is under mounting pressure as the Tricky Trees consider potential replacements for him just 29 days into the Australian’s tenure, and ruthless owner Evangelos Marinakis has his eyes on a few interesting options.

Nottingham Forest doing due-diligence on new managers after poor Postecoglou start

As is the norm when managers are facing an uncertain future, Forest are believed to be doing their due-diligence on possible replacements for Postecoglou if they do decide to pull the plug.

The former Tottenham boss, who helped to end Spurs’ 17-year wait for a major trophy in May, could be shown his P45 once again at Forest – just under a month after Marinakis appointed the tactician to replace fan favourite Nuno Espírito Santo.

Marinakis personally opted to hire Postecoglou for his attacking style, in a deviation from Nuno’s pragmatic, counter-attacking approach, and is still privately desperate for it to work out (Ben Jacobs).

However, other reports claim that the Greek billionaire is privately furious with Forest’s state of affairs on the pitch right now, with TEAMtalk stating that Postecoglou is “on the verge” of being sacked by Forest after a barren first seven games in charge.

If Postecoglou is let go in the next 12 days, he will become the shortest-reigning Premier League boss in the competition’s history – breaking Les Reed’s record – who was sacked by Charlton Athletic after just 41 days in 2006.

In terms of who could succeed the 60-year-old, a few intriguing names have been linked already, none more so than Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner.

Glasner, who just watched his side’s impressive 19-game unbeaten run come to an end thanks to Jack Grealish’s added-time winner for Everton, would undoubtedly be the best candidate.

The Austrian guided Palace to their first ever major trophy earlier this year, defeating Man City 1-0 in the FA Cup final at Wembley, and this booked them a spot in the Europa League — only for Forest to take the Eagles’ place due to a UEFA ruling.

His Selhurst Park contract is due to expire at the end of this season with no signs of a renewal so far, potentially opening the door for Marinakis, with Glasner emerging as a prime candidate to replace Postecoglou at Forest.

Fulham managerMarcoSilvabefore the match

Fulham’s Marco Silva is in an identical contract situation, and the Portuguese doesn’t seem too content in West London, having publicly swiped at the club’s lack of transfer activity.

Nottingham Forest really want Marco Silva amid good Marinakis relationship

Silva, who guided Olympiacos to a Greek Super League title in 2016, worked with Marinakis during his time there and the duo still have a good relationship now.

That is according to talkSPORT, who report that Silva is very high on Forest’s wanted list if they decide to push Postecoglou out of the door.

The 48-year-old guided Fulham to a Championship title and subsequent promotion to the Premier League, keeping them there ever since, and the Whites briefly contended for Europe last season only to fall short at the last hurdle.

Silva achieved this despite working with very limited resources, and he appears to be keen on remaining in England after rejecting “several lucrative offers” from Saudi Arabia.

The tactician has also earned praise from elite peers, like Pep Guardiola, who praised his work at Fulham back in 2024.

DCL upgrade: Farke must regret binning Leeds dud who was "like Archie Gray"

After the deadline passed at the end of the summer transfer window, Leeds United did not have the attacking depth that Daniel Farke wanted in the squad.

Journalist Graham Smyth noted that the manager revealed that it would be “difficult” for the club to avoid relegation if they did not add to their attacking options, and they did not.

The 49ers left it too late and had no back-up options when a deal for Harry Wilson fell through on deadline day, which meant that they ended the window with Noah Okafor as their only signing out wide.

Okafor, who was signed from AC Milan for £18m, was the only attacking signing who was signed for a transfer fee, as the club did not sign another winger, attacking midfielder, or striker from another club for a fee.

Lucas Nmecha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin were the only two other attacking signings made by the club during the summer transfer window, and both of them arrived on free transfers.

Calvert-Lewin joined on a free transfer from Premier League mainstays Everton in the summer after his contract with the Toffees expired, and Leeds need more from him.

Why Leeds need more from Dominic Calvert-Lewin

The 11-cap England international has played 245 matches in the Premier League, per Transfermarkt, for Everton and Leeds combined in his career, which shows that he is a hugely experienced player at the level.

His experience does shine through in his physical output. The towering striker has won 4.7 duels per game and won 42% of his aerial duels in the top-flight, per Sofascore, whilst Joel Piroe, for example, has won 0.5 duels per match and won 20% of his aerial duels.

This shows that he is providing an outlet at the top end of the pitch for Leeds to hit when they are under pressure, which is why Farke is right to continue to select him over Piroe, who is a lightweight out of possession.

However, Calvert-Lewin needs to offer more in front of goal for the West Yorkshire outfit, as his header in the clip above is his only goal for the club to date.

The £100k-per-week centre-forward has missed five ‘big chances’ in five starts in the Premier League, whilst he also missed four ‘big chances’ in the League Cup against Sheffield Wednesday on his debut.

As you can see in the table above, Calvert-Lewin is third in the Premier League for ‘big chances’ missed this season, but he does not boast the goal tally that the players around him in that list have.

Missing chances is not the end of the world for a striker if they are still scoring goals, as Erling Haaland and Jean-Philippe Mateta are doing, but the Leeds striker is not scoring enough goals to make up for his misses.

This is why Farke needs more from the experienced number nine. For all the good work he is doing physically, Calvert-Lewin must step up and provide goals to win points for the team.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The longer his struggles in front of goal continue, the more Leeds may regret how they ended up in a position where Mateo Joseph had to be axed from the squad in the summer.

Per the striker’s comments, Farke told him that he would not be counted on in the Premier League, which led to a loan move to LaLiga outfit Mallorca.

Why Leeds must regret loaning out Mateo Joseph

The Spain U21 international came through the youth ranks at Thorp Arch to score six goals in 73 first-team matches for Leeds, per Transfermarkt, whilst mainly coming off the bench.

Journalist Phil Hay even said that Joseph was “starting to look a little bit like Archie Gray” at the end of the 2023/24 campaign, as the young striker was “becoming a really big impact player off the bench” in the same season that Gray stepped up before his £30m move to Tottenham Hotspur.

Unfortunately, Farke did not have faith that the Spaniard would be able to make the step up to the Premier League, which is why he was sent out on loan to Mallorca.

His form in LaLiga since being sent out on loan may be frustrating for supporters, because his current performance level suggests that he would be an upgrade on Calvert-Lewin at Elland Road.

The Leeds academy graduate has won 47% of his ground duels and 37% of his overall duels across eight appearances in LaLiga, per Sofascore, which shows that he has handled the physicality of one of Europe’s major leagues well.

On top of showing good physicality in his performances, Joseph has also scored two goals in four starts in LaLiga for Mallorca, twice as many goals as Calvert-Lewin has managed in the Premier League.

As you can see in the table above, the 22-year-old marksman has scored twice as many goals, provided one more assist, and won one more penalty than the Leeds forward this season.

Meanwhile, Calvert-Lewin has only won a slightly higher percentage of his physical duels, which suggests that Joseph would not be a significant downgrade in that respect.

Therefore, Leeds must regret binning the Spanish forward in the summer, because Farke did not trust him, as he is now outperforming Calvert-Lewin in another major European league.

His return of two goals with only two ‘big chances’ missed suggests that he is the clinical marksman that Leeds are sorely lacking in their team right now, after they failed to score any of the four ‘big chances’ they had against Burnley on Saturday.

Farke and Leeds will now be hoping that Calvert-Lewin can turn his form around and start to show why the club were willing to move Joseph on to go with him as their main number nine.

Why Trent Alexander-Arnold is 'highly unlikely' to start for Real Madrid against Liverpool in Champions League showdown on return to Anfield

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s emotional return to Anfield is set to take a dramatic twist, with the Real Madrid defender ‘highly unlikely’ to start against his former club. The 27-year-old, still recovering from a hamstring injury, remains short of full fitness and is expected to watch from the bench as Federico Valverde continues to deputise at right-back for Xabi Alonso’s side.

  • Alexander-Arnold unlikely to start for Real Madrid at Liverpool

Alexander-Arnold is not expected to feature from the start when Real Madrid face Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday night. The 27-year-old, who joined the Spanish giants from the Reds in the summer of 2025, has been sidelined since mid-September after sustaining a hamstring injury in a clash against Marseille. Although he made the bench for El Clasico and again this past weekend, he has yet to play a single minute since his recovery began.

As per The Athletic, sources close to the club have confirmed that Alexander-Arnold is still following an eight-week rehabilitation plan, with this fixture marking the seventh week of that schedule. Real Madrid’s medical staff and Alonso are keen not to risk aggravating the injury, especially with the defender still short of match sharpness. As a result, he is deemed “highly unlikely” to start at Anfield, though he may be included among the substitutes for a potential cameo appearance late in the match.

With both Alexander-Arnold and Dani Carvajal unavailable to start, Alonso is expected to persist with Valverde at right-back yet again. The Uruguayan midfielder has filled in admirably over Madrid’s past five matches. This tactical continuity, coupled with Alexander-Arnold’s lingering fitness concerns, makes it improbable that the former Liverpool vice-captain will start on his long-awaited return to Merseyside.

Slow start to life in Madrid for Alexander-Arnold

Alexander-Arnold’s first season in Spain has been far from straightforward. Since his summer move to Real Madrid, the right-back has featured in only ten matches across all competitions, struggling to establish himself amid injuries and fierce competition for places in Alonso’s right-back hierarchy.

For Alexander-Arnold, the situation reflects both the difficulty of adjusting to a new environment and the physical toll of having played the Club World Cup and a quickfire pre-season.

Having moved from the Premier League to La Liga after nearly two decades at Liverpool, the Englishman has faced a steep learning curve in adapting to Alonso’s system, with Carvajal being preferred when both are fully fit.

  • Getty Images Sport

    Alexander-Arnold: Liverpool hero to villain

Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid in 2025 was one of the biggest stories of the football year. After spending twenty years at Liverpool, he left Anfield under a cloud of controversy, opting not to renew his contract and instead agreeing to a free transfer to Madrid. The Reds reluctantly accepted a £10 million compensation package that allowed him to join the Spanish champions early to compete in the Club World Cup.

The decision divided opinion among Liverpool supporters. While many admired his achievements, others felt betrayed by his choice to leave without a transfer fee. His return to Anfield, therefore, carries a unique emotional weight and a sense of confrontation. Liverpool boss Arne Slot has already promised to welcome his former player warmly, but the reaction from the crowd remains unpredictable.

  • Alonso offers update on Alexander-Arnold

In the short term, Real Madrid’s focus will be on managing Alexander-Arnold’s recovery carefully. Manager Xabi Alonso offered an update on the defender ahead of the game. He told reporters: "He’s available, and he didn’t play the other day because of the circumstances of the match. We need him because he has tremendous quality. It’s a new stage for him, and we have to help him and give him what he needs to perform because he’s an exceptional player in this squad.”

For Alexander-Arnold, the challenge now is to regain his starting role and prove his worth in a squad stacked with elite talent. Once fully fit, the expectation remains that he will play a central role in Madrid’s ambitions to win both La Liga and the Champions League this season. Nonetheless, Tuesday’s match at Anfield will still be an emotional milestone even if he starts on the bench. Whether greeted with applause or jeers, Alexander-Arnold’s return will serve as a poignant reminder of his legacy at Liverpool

India's lead swells as Pant comes out swinging

Rahul stroked a composed half-century before Pant’s chaotic cameo took India’s lead to 357 by lunch

Lunch
Rishabh Pant’s chaotic cameo helped India stretch their lead to 357 on the fourth morning at Edgbaston, after KL Rahul’s calm half-century laid the foundations for him. Dropped on 10 by Zak Crawley, Pant threw the bat – quite literally, collecting it from square leg after losing grip – to reach 41 not out off 35 balls at the lunch interval.Rahul, resuming on 28, ticked over under gloomy skies, with the floodlights on throughout the first session. Brydon Carse caused him some problems, but was all over Karun Nair: he hit him on the grille with a lifter, had him edging into the gap between first and second slip, and finally had him caught behind on the drive for 26.Rahul progressed serenely to his half-century but was cleaned up by Josh Tongue, who was rewarded for sticking to his full length despite being driven for boundaries. Angling the ball in from wide on the crease, Tongue found some late movement away off the seam to beat Rahul’s outside edge, and remove his middle stump.

Pant made his intentions clear by charging his fourth ball and slapping it back over Tongue’s head for six, and was reprieved when Crawley put a straightforward chance down at mid-off off Ben Stokes. He responded by slog-sweeping Tongue for another six, and hauled Shoaib Bashir for three boundaries in as many overs.Shubman Gill batted with more composure at the other end, and faces a decision later in the day around how many runs India should look to set England. It was three years ago today that England completed their record run chase – against the same opponents, at the same venue – but they will likely need far more than 378 to take a two-nil series lead.

Freya Kemp hauls Hampshire over line as Somerset stay winless

Three wickets from Freya Davies, half-century from Rhian Southby set up home side

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay06-Jul-2025Freya Kemp proved Hampshire Hawks’ last-over hero to edge a nail-biter against winless Somerset in the Women’s Vitality Blast.Rhianna Southby’s 57 and Ellyse Perry’s 40 had given Hampshire the advantage in chasing 154, but accurate bowling had seen them fall behind the rate. With 11 runs needed off the last over, Kemp pumped a six down the ground before knocking off the remaining runs to give Hawks just their second win in the last seven matches to give them renewed hope of qualifying for finals day.Fran Wilson had given Somerset a defendable total with 55 but it wasn’t enough for the bottom-placed side.Somerset chose to bat first under grey skies, and found a consistent tempo to build partnerships and accumulate runs. Bex Odgers set up the innings with a quickfire 18 filled with cuts to the boundary before Wilson took over to provide the backbone of the innings.Former England batter Wilson had only scored 103 runs in her previous seven innings but a delicious straight drive got her moving. Wilson isn’t known for her power-hitting, with her touch-play a defining part of her international career. That was also the case on this occasion, with deft ramps and paddles helping her reach a 30-ball fifty. She had seen Niamh Holland, Sophie Luff, and Jess Hazell come and go – the former two to the impeccable Bex Tyson – before Amanda-Jade Wellington entered to kick-on in the last six overs.Wilson was run out after a mix-up and a direct hit from extra cover, and while Wellington tried to put off the bowlers with her moving around the crease and funky stances outside off stump, boundaries were hard to find at the death.Somerset managed to find 43 runs off the last five overs, mainly through hard running, with only three boundaries off the bat in that time. Freya Davies capitalised on the last over bat flailing by picking up the wickets of Wellington and Alex Griffiths, and with the earlier wicket of Odgers, returned 3 for 38.Somerset’s 153 felt below par and when Australian superstar Perry got the Hawks off to a flier around short rain delays it appeared to confirm it. Perry, on her home debut, used her immense quality to power the ball to the boundary seven times but met her downfall attempting to scoop Erin Vukusic and was pinned lbw for 40. It was the Croatian’s first Blast wicket. Her opening partner Southby struggled with timing but slowly managed to accumulate and with Kemp found their way to around the required rate with a 68-run stand. But Somerset’s tight bowling, especially from Vukusic and Griffiths gave Hawks 27 to chase in the last three overs.Kemp was dropped on the boundary edge for four, but when Southby was bowled for 57 with 16 still needed in 11 balls, the result was in the balance. But Kemp smashed the second ball of the last over, bowled by Griffiths, over long on before two twos got them over the line with two balls to spare.

Miles Hammond leads steadfast Gloucestershire in batting to a draw

Gloucestershire 380 (Bracey 133, Akhter 58, Bancroft 50) and 255 for 7 (Hammond 84, Kellaway 6-111) drew with Glamorgan 528 (Kellaway 139, Ingram 117)Gloucestershire batted all day to complete their day four task and ensure a draw with Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens.Miles Hammond led the way with 84, remaining at the crease for 55 overs of the final day as the draw was settled after just three innings, the visitors ending on 255 for 7 with a lead of 107.Ben Kellaway attempted to bowl Glamorgan to victory in the absence of the injured Mason Crane and continued to show signs of promise with career-best figures of 6 for 111, adding to his century from day three. With Leicestershire and Derbyshire recording defeats earlier in the day, Glamorgan and Gloucestershire closed the gap on the promotion spaces with their high-scoring draw.Starting the day wicketless after 11 overs survived overnight, Gloucestershire needed 136 to make Glamorgan bat again. The equation for the hosts was simple – bowl the opposition out inside a day and see how much time was left to chase whatever was set.Joe Phillips was the first of a series of starts for Gloucestershire throughout the day, although balls were the crucial figure with time taken up the only aim. After nine overs of the day, Glamorgan struck – Cameron Bancroft adjudged lbw off James Harris setting Glamorgan on their way for the day.An over later, Kellaway removed the other opener with Asa Tribe completing an excellent short-leg catch off the face of the bat.Ollie Price and later Graeme van Buuren stalled Glamorgan in support of Hammond, the latter pair putting on 56. However, with three wickets at lunch, the Welsh county had more hope than initially thought. An afternoon session drifted by, Glamorgan trying all the tactics seen by Gloucestershire a day prior, plus the additional trick of Kellaway’s left-arm-orthodox, one of which a head-high beamer sent for six. James Bracey and Hammond batted time, not always convincingly, combining for 45 although that wasn’t important either. Gloucestershire losing just one wicket in the session was crucial, they now had a 46-run lead for Glamorgan to negotiate with just 34 overs left in the day. With an early handshake the expectation from the afternoon of dryness, the tale twisted again. Hammond was dropped on his first ball after tea, only to be dismissed in the same over. Then Bracey’s long, circumstantial knock ended in Kellaway’s next over, giving the 21-year-old a second career five-for, Colin Ingram receiving a second-slip catch for an early 40th birthday gift.Another period of eight overs went by which Glamorgan couldn’t afford, 30 runs added, Kellaway claiming a sixth.Eventually hands were shaken with 12 overs left in the day, at 5.24pm, the Kookaburra ball claiming a win, Glamorgan only wondering what could’ve been had Crane’s side-strain not restricted him from taking part in the final day’s proceedings.

The new Skipp & Hojbjerg: Frank must finally ditch £210k-p/w Spurs duo

Over the years, the Tottenham Hotspur faithful have been blessed by numerous partnerships that have handed them countless memorable moments on the field.

Harry Kane and Heung-min Son will no doubt be the first duo to pop into the minds of the fanbase, mainly due to their incredible performances together in North London.

The duo made themselves the best partnership in Premier League history, assisting one another for a combined total of 47 goals – over ten more than any other pairing in the division’s history.

As a result, the pair both rank within the top five goalscorers in Lilywhites history, with Kane topping the list on 280 goals, whilst Son sits fourth with his total of 173.

Despite the success of the aforementioned pair, one other duo failed to reach the same heights, leading to huge amounts of criticism from various pundits.

The failures of Skipp & Hojbjerg in Spurs’ midfield

In the 2021/22 season, under the guidance of Nuno Espírito Santo and Antonio Conte, a midfield duo of Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was often utilised.

However, such a decision would lead to the Lilywhites ending the campaign in fourth position, but it’s safe to say it could have been a whole lot better without the aforementioned pair.

Skipp ended the year with 18 Premier League appearances, but struggled to match the faith shown in him by various managers in North London.

He only ranked in the 19th percentile for chances created and the 8th percentile for dribbles completed – leading to the Englishman coming under fire for his lack of quality in possession.

As for Hojbjerg, he started all but two outings, but also struggled to provide any quality going forward, as seen by his measly tally of 0.7 chances created per 90.

The Dane also only won 1.2 tackles per 90, subsequently struggling to provide the quality in the area in which he was selected in the side to do in the capital.

Their lack of quality together led to former Spurs star Danny Rose to claim the pair were good players but were extremely “limited” in what they could offer the side in transition.

Former professional Perry Groves doubled down on the pair and stated that the duo were “like a double appendix” – even describing them as “useless” when operating alongside one another.

However, in the present day, boss Thomas Frank has been presented with a similar scenario with two players who have struggled to provide the goods in 2025/26.

The Spurs stars who are looking like the new Skipp & Hojbjerg

After taking the reins in the summer transfer window, there’s no disputing that new boss Frank would need time to settle into the role at Spurs to discover his best starting eleven.

To aid his chances of success in North London, the board handed the Dane over £100m worth of funds to make the changes he craved to his first-team squad.

Such a decision made his bedding-in period somewhat trickier, leaving him with the prospect of integrating the players into the current crop of talents on the books.

However, he did decide to secure the services of Joao Palinhina on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich, with the Portuguese international making an immediate impact for the Lilywhites.

He’s already scored twice for the club, whilst offering the needed ball-winning presence the side massively lacked under Ange Postecoglou last campaign.

The 30-year-old has often been partnered alongside the likes of Lucas Bergvall and Pape Sarr at the heart of the side – with the duo offering a progressive partner alongside him.

However, Frank opted to utilise Rodrigo Bentancur alongside him against Monaco on Wednesday night, but it was a decision that ultimately proved to be the wrong one.

The duo, who earn a combined £210k-per-week, struggled to impose themselves on proceedings – often being criticised for being too defensive-minded and struggling in transition.

They only registered a total of six combined passes into the final third, whilst only completing a total of one dribble – highlighting that the criticism was rightly warranted.

Other figures, such as zero shots and four times dispossesse,d also highlight the struggles the pair faced against the French side, with Frank needing to take immediate action and operate a different duo.

There’s no denying, Palhinha has done enough to warrant his place in the starting eleven, but he desperately needs a more mobile and transitional player alongside him to bring added success to the club.

Should the manager struggle to identify such a problem, it could see a repeat of the Skipp and Hojbjerg partnership, which saw the side massively struggle under Conte’s guidance.
