Before Dan Burn: Newcastle "leader" is the first player Wilson must ditch

With the news filtering through that Ross Wilson is now joining Newcastle United as the club’s new sporting director, it could well be make or break time for a number of the reserve personnel at St James’ Park who are nearing the end of their current deals.

Indeed, Wilson will want to leave his mark on proceedings, with the likes of Matt Targett surely being let go when his deal expires next summer.

The likes of Kieran Trippier and Fabian Schar, however, will surely be keen to extend their current contracts, which also expire next year, even as they reach both 35 and 33, respectively, having shown they can still offer up plenty of quality as St. James’ Park veterans.

Dan Burn will also want to continue his celebrated Newcastle stay for as long as possible, even if question marks continue to pop up about his suitability as a left-back in Eddie Howe’s XI.

What the future holds for Dan Burn at Newcastle

Burn has become a staple at Newcastle over recent years, with the Blyth-born colossus beaming from ear to ear when he lifted the EFL Cup last year to break the Toon’s long trophy drought, having scored in the unbelievable 2-1 victory.

In total, the 6-foot-7 defender has now tallied up 158 appearances for Howe and Co since joining from Brighton and Hove Albion in 2022, with Burn missing from just one Premier League contest all season long last campaign.

Still, he hasn’t been without his critics this season, with one Toon-based content creator even dubbing Burn’s extended shifts at left-back over recent games as the “stuff of nightmares”.

In particular, the England international notably struggled to close down Bukayo Saka during Newcastle’s late 2-1 collapse against Arsenal, with the usually formidable 33-year-old giving away possession a high 26 times in the process.

With Malick Thiaw’s emergence into the side as an up-and-coming centre-back option, it’s unlikely that Burn will be shoved back into the heart of the backline soon, with the ageing number 33 just hopeful he can remain a consistent starter until his own contract runs out in the summer of 2027.

One of Burn’s Newcastle teammates doesn’t look to have the same luxury of time on his side, however.

Newcastle "leader" is now on borrowed time

When scanning the current makeup of the Magpies’ first-team step-up, there are an awful lot of figures who have been with the club since the very beginning of Howe’s reign.

Nick Pope left Burnley behind for the allure of St. James’ Park during Howe’s first proper summer transfer window, and despite some murmurs last season by journalist Adam Clery that he looks “absolutely petrified” to make an error, he remains Howe’s number one choice all those years down the line.

He does, however, have that same weight on his shoulders that the likes of Trippier and Schar are feeling, as his contract also expires this approaching June.

Jamaal Lascelles is also in this same unwanted boat, but he has been situated on Tyneside since the days of Rafa Benitez, even when his team were locked into a Championship promotion race during the 2016/17 season.

At the time, Lascelles would stand up strong as the Toon’s captain to guide the underachievers back up to the top-flight, with Newcastle royalty in Alan Shearer even going out of his way to label the 31-year-old as a “leader.”

Since then, he has notched up 159 Premier League appearances and counting, but with their Champions League status now nearly a decade from Lascelles’ moment in the spotlight, and his recurring nature in and out of the St James’ treatment room currently, it might well be an apt time to pull the plug on the Derby-born centre-back’s long-winding stay, when his deal ceases to be in June.

Lascelle’s woes with injuries haven’t stopped him from still being seen as a club captain off the pitch, with Howe further reinforcing that he is an “incredible” player to have around the dressing room.

But, with Wilson through the door, and his contract soon to be up, now could be the time to wave goodbye, with Lascelles potentially going on to be a hero for another club, if he can exorcise his injury demons once and for all.

Richard Johnson departs role as Middlesex first-team coach

Club stalwart pays price for underwhelming start to season in Championship and Blast competitions

Middlesex have parted company with first-team coach, Richard Johnson, after two wins in their first seven County Championship fixtures left them sixth in Division Two. They have also only won one out of six Vitality T20 Blast games.Johnson, a former Middlesex stalwart who played more than 200 times for the club, returned as assistant coach in 2009 and then again as first-team coach, succeeding Stuart Law, in 2022. In between he spent three seasons on the coaching staff at Surrey.Although Johnson succeeded in securing promotion back to Division One of the Championship in his first season in charge, Middlesex were relegated again in 2023. Last year, they narrowly missed out on a top-two finish, as Sussex and Yorkshire pipped them to going up.Related

The club enjoyed scant success in white-ball competitions under Johnson, failing to qualify for the knockouts in either the Blast or the One-Day Cup during his time in charge. His tenure was also marked by Middlesex having had to deal with a number of off-field issues, including being put into special measures by the ECB over financial mismanagement and fighting a legal case against former chief executive, Richard Goatley. They did not sign an overseas player in 2023, but began the current season with renewed optimism after bringing in Kane Williamson (in a deal jointly financed by MCC and London Spirit), Dane Paterson and Josh Little.”Jono has put his heart and soul into the role since he returned to the club in 2022, and we thank him for all his hard work during his time as first-team coach,” Alan Coleman, Middlesex’s director of cricket, said. “Ultimately cricket is a performance business, and we do not feel that the results this season have matched the expectations that we have for the team at our disposal.”Jono is due a lot of credit for leading the team through the most difficult off-field period that we have had and has embraced the challenge of working within the financial constraints placed upon the club during his time as first-team coach. We do though have high expectations for the playing group that has been assembled during this time, and we do feel that the time is right for a change to try and maximise the talent and performances from our squad.”Jono is a modern Middlesex cricketing great and has served the club exceptionally well during his time as a player, assistant coach and first-team coach. We thank him for all that he has done for the club over many years.”

Liverpool told they're in 'crisis' after fourth Premier League defeat in a row to Brentford as club legend Jamie Carragher pinpoints £450m summer transfer spend

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool are in a "crisis" after their fourth Premier League defeat in a row to Brentford. It is nothing short of a nightmare run for the reigning champions, who were beaten 3-2 by the Bees despite their staggering £450 million spend ($600m) in the transfer window. They have struggled at the back, conceding nine goals in four league games in defeats to Crystal Palace, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Brentford.

Slot’s men suffer another blow in west London

Goals from Dango Ouattara, Kevin Schade and Igor Thiago sealed a famous win for the Bees, despite strikes from Milos Kerkez and Mohamed Salah threatening a comeback. The result piled further pressure on Slot, who suddenly finds himself under the scanner after inspiring the Reds to a record-equalling 20th Premier League title in May. Looking at their performance against Brentford, Carragher didn’t hold back, warning that the issues at Liverpool run far deeper than form.

AdvertisementGetty Images Sport'Crisis time' – Carragher’s brutal verdict

Speaking on , Carragher said: "I don't think they've got enough [physicality]. To lose four games in a row for a team like Brentford, or a team battling relegation, would be a disaster. To see the champions lose four games in a row, with the expenditure in the summer, I think we're in crisis time. There will be a lot of serious questions being asked of everyone, the playing staff, and the manager. When they've looked at what they've spent, they'll be looking for a lot more. Liverpool have to look at the physicality and height within their team because, right now, I don’t think they have enough."

Slot also admitted post-match that his team’s performance was one of the worst of his tenure. The Dutchman appeared visibly dejected as he faced the media and said: "Disappointing, again. You are always hoping if you win a game of football during the week, although it is only two days' rest when you come over here, of course you are hoping for a better result, but I was also hoping and expecting a better performance, because the performance was far from what we are used to. Even if we are losing, our performances have been better than tonight."

Slot admits Liverpool have been 'found out'

Slot believes Liverpool must reinvent themselves as their Premier League rivals have chalked up a blueprint to beat them. Their defensive problems have been laid bare, and the Dutch manager must go back to the tactics board to conjure a new plan for his troops.

"I have said many times already, teams have a certain playing style against us, which is a very good strategy to play and we haven't found an answer yet," he admitted. "Every time going 1-0 down doesn't really help as well after five minutes. It's a bit of that, that teams know which strategy to play against us. We are still, even today when we don't play well, able to score two goals and create more chances than only the two we scored from open play. But you cannot even compete, which we don't do at the moment, we don't compete up there because we simply concede too many goals and that is not something I only look at our defence [for], that's something we do with 11 players together."

Slot also pointed to the disruption caused by Liverpool’s busy summer overhaul. The club signed several high-profile names, including Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, in an effort to refresh the squad. However, the new arrivals are still struggling to adapt to Slot’s system.

"Yes, it definitely also has to do with if you change quite a lot in the summer then I think it's not a surprise that it can go a bit like this," he said. "But I didn't expect it to go with four losses in a row, let that be clear. That it is always a bit of a bumpy road if you change, that is not so surprising, but four losses in a row and I don't know if that has been as an excuse but from the last six games we have played, there have been five away. So, sometimes this is also not really helpful if you are on the run of form that we are."

Dhananjaya de Silva bets on pace in second Test against Bangladesh

Sri Lanka might be facing an 11-month Test hiatus after the second match against Bangladesh, but that won’t stop Dhananjaya de Silva from putting his mark on this team. This is the first World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for which Dhananjaya has the reins from the outset, and he’s doubling down on some of his strategies.Through the last two years, he’s been insistent that Sri Lanka have to blood seamers at home, so they are prepared for overseas assignments. In the second Test, they may even play three seamers.Related

  • Sri Lanka begin post-Angelo Mathews era with crucial WTC points at stake

  • Milan ruled out of second Test

“We’ve got 12 in the squad, and we’ve got options, because our weather is changing from time to time as well,” he said on the eve of the Test. “We were hoping to go with three seamers, but it’s hard to tell exactly – the pitch also looks flat.”Part of Sri Lanka’s thinking seems to be that Bangladesh are more likely to lose wickets to their seam bowlers than spinners. In the last series these two teams played, for example, their top three seamers (Lahiru Kumara, Vishwa Fernando, and Kasun Rajitha) took 29 wickets between them, placing first, second and third on the series wicket-takers’ list. For this match, Asitha Fernando is almost certain to play, while Rajitha and Vishwa may also enter the XI. Isitha Wijesundara, an uncapped right-armer, is in the squad as well.”Not just in the last series in Bangladesh, even in the previous one it was pace that got a lot of wickets,” Dhananjaya said. “We talked a lot about how the seamers got about 70% of their wickets. But it’s not easy to play seamers on these pitches, but we’re trying to play three. Let’s see what the pitch is like tomorrow morning.”Dhananjaya de Silva averages 43.95 from No. 6 but 20.33 from No. 4•AFP/Getty Images

There is also the question of who will play in place of the retired Angelo Mathews at the newly-vacant No. 4 position. Dhananjaya himself will leap up the order to second drop. Though he’s clearly been effective at No. 6, averaging 43.95 in that position, a move up the order is something of a risk. In six innings at No. 4, Dhananjaya averages 20.33 so far.”If you think I’m good enough, I’m ready to bat at four,” Dhananjaya joked when asked who’d fill the gap. “I’m set to bat there.” He had also batted at No. 3 between 2017 and 2018 with mixed results. He played an impressive match-saving, second-innings hundred against India from that position, but over 18 innings there, he averaged 32.88 with two hundreds and two fifties. He’s been an improved batter in the last several years, however. Since 2020, Dhananjaya has averaged 43.85, compared with a pre-2020 average of 34.47. Which leaves the question of who replaces him at No. 6?Another of Dhananjaya’s hallmarks has been to blood young players, with both Lahiru Udara and Tharindu Ratnayake having made their debuts in the first Test. In this game, Sonal Dinusha, the left-arm spin allrounder with 99 first-class wickets and seven first-class tons, seems set to play his first match.”With the wicket the way it is and if we need a spinner, I think Sonal is the best option,” Dhananjaya said. “For now there’s a big chance he will play.”

Chelsea sold a Gittens upgrade who's now playing "better than Saka"

It’s not been a great start to the season for Chelsea.

In the Premier League, Enzo Maresca’s side sits in eighth place with two wins, two draws, and two losses from their opening six games.

In the Champions League, they lost to Bayern Munich before beating Benfica, and in the League Cup, they just about got over the line against League One side Lincoln City.

Unsurprisingly, plenty of the Blues’ exciting young stars, like Jamie Gittens, have struggled this year, which makes their decision to sell an upgrade on him in the summer all the more perplexing.

Gittens poor start to life at Chelsea

Chelsea opted to spend around £48m on Gittens in the summer, and while such a fee now seems a little excessive, it didn’t appear too high at the time.

After all, the 21-year-old ended last season having scored 12 goals and provided five assists from 48 games for Borussia Dortmund.

Moreover, Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley even went as far as to claim he was “England’s best left winger in 2024/25”.

Unfortunately, it would seem utterly absurd to make such a claim today, as the Reading-born ace has so far failed to live up to expectations at Chelsea.

As things stand, the dynamic winger has made six appearances for the club, of which three have been starts, and yet he has not scored or provided an assist.

However, it’s worse than that, as, on top of having no end product, the summer signing hasn’t even had moments in which he’s looked promising, let alone good.

In almost all of his appearances, he ends up going missing, and when he does have the ball at his feet, he seemingly always makes the wrong decision.

For example, he failed to have a single shot on target in 70 minutes against Lincoln and gave away the ball with every other touch in his cameo against Benfica.

The performances have been so underwhelming that one content creator has labelled him as “shockingly bad.”

Gittens’ poor start to the season has left some wondering why the club sold someone who looks like a far better player, someone some have even compared to Bukayo Saka.

The Gittens upgrade sold by Chelsea

The nature of Chelsea’s transfer strategy means that they are going to sell some young talents too soon, or without securing adequate backup.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

That seems to be the case with Noni Madueke, as even though he had his own problems at Chelsea, it’s hard not to look at him as a clear upgrade on Gittens at the moment.

Now, there will be plenty of you happily pointing out that, like the former Dortmund star, the new Arsenal is yet to score a goal or provide an assist for his new club.

However, ask a fan of the Gunners, or a pundit for that matter, and they’ll happily explain that while the lack of end product isn’t ideal, it doesn’t take away from the fact that, before his injury, the Englishman was a breath of fresh air.

The “mentality monster,” as dubbed by former personal coach Saul Isaksson-Hurst, has brought a level of directness that has been missing from the North Londoners for some time, and was so good in the game against Nottingham Forest that he got a standing ovation.

In fact, he’s been so exciting to watch that some have even suggested he could truly rival Saka for a place in the starting lineup, with former Chelsea and England defender Paul Parker saying: “With the way he plays, I actually think he’s better than Bukayo Saka.”

While that is almost certainly overdoing it, comparing Madueke and Gitten’s underlying numbers from this season makes it clear that the former Blues star is doing far more for his new side than his younger compatriot.

For example, even with the easier game against Lincoln, the former PSV Eindhoven star performs far better in key metrics, such as non-penalty expected goals plus assists, progressive passes and carries, passes into the penalty area, successful take-ons, and more, all per 90 minutes.

In other words, despite playing tougher opposition, the West Londoners’ former winger is putting up far better numbers than their new one this season.

Ultimately, things may well work out for Gittens, but as things stand, it looks like Chelsea made a mistake signing him and selling Madueke.

He's been told to leave: Southampton now plotting move to sign £30m PL star

In what would hand their promotion hopes a major boost, Southampton are now plotting a January move to sign a Premier League star who’s been told to leave his current club.

Will Still "delighted" after much-needed Sheffield United win

Prior to their 2-1 victory over a struggling Sheffield United side, Southampton had gone as many as six Championship games without a win. It’s a run that included frustrating draws against Watford and Portsmouth and one that could have quite easily led to several questions about Will Still’s position. But, at long last, it is now a run that has come to an end courtesy of Sheffield United.

In the end, it was Ross Stewart who was the hero of the hour as his brace secured the Saints’ 2-1 victory against Chris Wilder’s side in what Still described as the “ultimate Championship game”.

Asked if Southampton deserved all three points, the manager told reporters: “Overall, yes. I think we’ve been in control of large parts of it. We probably conceded another one of those annoying goals.

“You then miss a penalty and think, ‘Jesus, it’s going to happen again’, but we’ve not done that at all. We’ve made a few tweaks. We bought a bit of energy on the pitch and managed to turn it around. Getting back into the game is always tough when you’re away here.

“Then we’ve just kept at it and not felt sorry for ourselves. We’ve dug deep and got a brilliant win from Roscoe. It was the ultimate Championship game.”

Even after getting back to winning ways, however, there’s still work to be done at St Mary’s and the January transfer window will present Southampton with the perfect opportunity to welcome one particular upgrade.

Southampton plotting Ward-Prowse return

As reported by GiveMeSport, Southampton are now plotting a move to sign James Ward-Prowse in the January transfer window. The West Ham United midfielder has been told that he’s not in new manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s plans and could now return to the Saints less than three years on from sealing a £30m exit.

It would be a sensational return for the Southampton academy graduate, who could certainly do with a return to where it all started. Already dropped by Nuno, Ward-Prowse arguably needs the Saints just as much as they need him.

Whilst it’s been a frustrating couple of years, Ward-Prowse is still capable of taking Southampton to promotion if he completes his return in January. The 30-year-old could instantly partner Shea Charles at the heart of Still’s midfield and suddenly take the Saints from play-off hopefuls into automatic promotion contenders.

There will, of course, be question marks over their ability to afford such a player but West Ham could yet set a cut-price amid Nuno’s desire to show the midfielder the door. If that proves to be the case, then Southampton should take full advantage.

Revealed: The four clubs Bryan Mbeumo turned down to join Man Utd in £70m move from Brentford

Bryan Mbeumo reportedly turned down four clubs in order to join Manchester United in the summer. The in-form Cameroon international has made a blistering start to life at Old Trafford following his £70 million (€79m/$92m) summer move from Brentford, playing a significant role in what has been a dramatic turnaround in fortunes for Ruben Amorim's side.

Report claims Mbeumo had plenty of interest after 2024-25 season

In a new report from Mbeumo supposedly had plenty of suitors following the 2024-25 Premier League campaign. The 26-year-old recorded 20 goals and seven assists to help Brentford finish 10th under Thomas Frank last term. The Dane was appointed as Tottenham’s new head coach in June, succeeding Ange Postecoglou following the Australian's dismissal after the club finished 17th in the same season.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportMbeumo only had eyes for Man Utd after several meetings with Amorim

And the report claims that Tottenham were one of the four clubs who were keen on signing Mbeumo, with Spurs boss Frank hoping to reunite with his former charge in north London. The report says Spurs were even willing to offer more money than United for Mbeumo, who is also believed to have attracted interest from Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle.

However, the report concludes by claiming Mbeumo told United he wanted to join them on 1 June, having been "sold" on Amorim’s vision for the club through several Zoom meetings. Mbeumo had a painful wait until the move was officially completed on 21 July, signing a five-year contract with the club.

Upon joining United, Mbeumo said: "As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams; the team whose shirt I wore growing up.

"My mentality is to always be better than I was yesterday. I know that I have the spirit and character to reach another level here, learning from Ruben Amorim and playing alongside world-class players.

"Everybody told me about the environment that is being created here and how exciting the plans are for the future. This is a massive club, with an incredible stadium and amazing fans, we are all really determined to challenge for the biggest trophies."

Cameroon international has made excellent start at Old Trafford

Mbeumo has since gone on to make an incredible start to his United career, registering four goals and one assist in nine league matches. His efforts in the final third have coincided with United’s recent upturn in form, with Amorim’s side having won their last three games on the spin.

Following a 2-0 victory over Sunderland, Mbeumo scored the opener as United defeated rivals Liverpool 2-1 on 19 October, in what was the club’s first win at Anfield since 2016. Mbeumo built on his heroics on Merseyside by bagging a brace in the 4-2 home triumph over Brighton last Saturday, with United currently sitting sixth in the league table.

Getty Images SportAmorim lavished praise on Mbeumo after Brighton heroics

After Mbeumo inspired United to victory against Brighton, manager Amorim said after the game: "He’s [Mbeumo] a working machine. He’s so good in transitions. He’s improving when we are organising the final third. The connection with Amad, it’s really hard to beat these two guys because they change position, they are really fast, they are good in one against one.

"My role was, as a manager, to explain what I want from him. But it was more the club. And you guys. We can struggle a lot, but it’s Manchester United. When Manchester United is there, and when we feel that this player wants to come here, no matter what, no matter what the position, no matter if it's Champions League or not, we also give everything to bring these kind of guys, and that was the case."

West Ham already in talks over double January deal after Nuno's plea to the board

West Ham are making serious plans to reinforce their squad in the January transfer window, as now confirmed by reliable media sources.

West Ham target defender, midfielder and forward in January

According to Sky Sports this week, the Hammers have promised Nuno Espírito Santo that funds will be available to reinforce his squad at the turn of the year, coming as some much-needed good news.

It is also believed that the east Londoners could make as many as three major signings across the squad.

One of the main priorities for West Ham is strengthening their defence. The team has shown major vulnerability at the back, conceding more goals than any other side in the Premier League so far this season, so bringing in a reliable defender could be essential.

Midfield is another area West Ham are keen to upgrade. Their current options have struggled to get a foot-hold in games or provide that creative spark needed through the middle, with Nuno raising many eyebrows after his bizarre team selection to play Brentford.

Tomas Soucek and Andy Irving were overrun by a dominant Bees side who had 17 shots in total, and if West Ham are to avoid the drop, they need to plug those gaps in the engine room.

West Ham are also after a forward, which is arguably their most glaring need of all.

Niclas Füllkrug’s injury woes have carried on into this campaign, while youngster Callum Marshall is inexperienced and Callum Wilson boasts a torrid fitness record of his own.

The Irons are already being linked with a host of intriguing striker names, with Al-Ahli’s Ivan Toney, Man United’s Josh Zirkzee and Real Madrid starlet Endrick all mentioned as potential targets.

West Ham are rumoured to have done some work on a loan deal for Toney in January, but if that fails to pay dividends, Endrick is emerging as a more and more likely option.

The Brazilian has struggled for game time under Xabi Alonso, partly due to injury, and it was a similar story during Carlo Ancelotti’s final year in charge.

Endrick did play a key role in Real’s run to the Copa del Rey final last term, scoring five goals in the competition, but could do nothing as El Clásico rivals Barcelona eventually beat them to the trophy in April.

Fabrizio Romano and other media sources are adamant that the 19-year-old could leave the Bernabeu on loan this winter — opening the door for a potential West Ham deal amid their long-standing interest.

Now, journalist Graeme Bailey has shared a very interesting update, and Endrick isn’t the only Real player on West Ham’s radar.

West Ham in talks with Real Madrid over signing Endrick and Gonzalo Garcia

Bailey, in a piece for TBR Football, claims that West Ham are “already in talks” over a “double deal” involving Endrick and Gonzalo Garcia.

The former would come in on loan, while Nuno’s side have also asked about Garcia as their manager “pleads with his bosses” for more attacking reinforcements.

Endrick rejected a move to West Ham last January, so it is unclear what his stance would be on a move this time around with many clubs likely to be interested, but Garcia is apparently keen on a move to England.

The 21-year-old Spaniard, who won the Golden Boot award at last summer’s Club World Cup, has been limited to brief substitute appearances under Alonso this season but bagged an assist against Kairat Almaty in the Champions League last month.

Despite his limited chances in 2025/2026, Alonso holds Garcia in very high esteem, even comparing the young striker to Los Blancos legend Raul over the summer.

With West Ham speaking to Real about signing both Endrick and Garcia, there is reason to believe the young, hungry striking duo could inject some much-needed energy and attacking flair into Nuno’s ranks.

Same agent as Havertz: Arsenal now keen on £87m CF with eight goals in 25/26

Arsenal are now looking to sign a £87m striker with the same agent as Kai Havertz, joining a number of their Premier League rivals in the race for his signature.

Gunners looking to sign new striker amid Gyokeres criticism

Having knocked on the door in each of the last three Premier League seasons, finishing second on each occasion, the Gunners look like they are finally in a strong position to take the final step and win the title, most recently defeating Crystal Palace 1-0.

The narrow victory ensured Mikel Arteta’s side moved four points clear at the top of the table, with their stellar defensive record one of the main reasons they continue to set the pace, having shipped just three goals in their opening nine league games.

At the opposite end of the pitch, summer signing Viktor Gyokeres was seen as the final piece of the jigsaw, but the Swedish striker has already developed a reputation of a ‘flat track bully’, having scored just three league goals, two of which coming against Leeds United in August.

Troy Deeney has recently made it clear he doesn’t believe Gyokeres is in the same bracket as Harry Kane or Erling Haaland, given that Brighton & Hove Albion’s Danny Welbeck is outscoring the former Sporting CP man in the Premier League this season.

Gyokeres is regarded as one of the best strikers in the world, but there has now been a suggestion that Arsenal are already planning to bring in another new striker, with a report from Caught Offside stating they are keen on FC Porto’s Samu Omorodion.

Omorodion is protected by a monster release clause of €100m (£87m), so the Gunners would need to be willing to spend big to get a deal done, and they are not the only English club keen, with Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest also in the race.

The north Londoners have sent scouts to watch the Porto star in action in recent weeks, and they are likely to have been left impressed by his performances…

The 21-year-old is off to a very impressive start to the season, amassing eight goals in all competitions for Porto, and the youngster is showing signs he could be on course to have his best season to date, having progressed year-on-year since breaking through in Spain.

During that time, the former Alaves man also caught the eye of scout Ben Mattinson, who hailed him as a “box dominator” back in February.

Omorodion could be capable of becoming a top-level striker, but there are doubts over whether he would be a necessary signing for Arsenal, given that Gyokeres and Havertz are also on the books, with the Spain international interestingly represented by the same agent as the German.
