Arteta 2.0: Everton sold 'one of the PL's most underrated midfielders'

David Moyes returned to Everton in January, replacing a rather beleaguered Sean Dyche at the helm.

We all know this, but few foresaw the impact that the Scotsman would have on a tired outfit routinely threatened by relegation from the Premier League. Everton in fact did not finish the 2024/25 campaign in an imperilled position, but comfortably in mid-table, bouncing up and up across the second half of the term.

Now, after a summer exodus and a wave of fresh talent – Jack Grealish, looking at you – the Toffees are ready to compete for a top-half-of-the-table finish.

Grealish is the talisman, but Everton are built on a range of industrious players all working toward a shared goal. It’s what Moyes knows, with his previous tenure on Merseyside laden with unsung heroes who played important roles.

Moyes' unsung heroes at Everton

With Moyes at the helm across the noughties, Everton were a stable and competitive club. From 2006/07, seven times in succession did the manager and his squad maintain top-half finishes in the Premier League, with many under-the-radar stars pulling their weight alongside some more prominent peers.

Leon Osman would be a case in point, the retired midfielder spending almost all of his career at Goodison Park, racking up 433 appearances for the club. The lion’s share came in Moyes’ system. He didn’t boast the skill or the technical range to reach superstardom in the Premier League, but he worked tirelessly and was as tenacious as they get.

Tony Hibbert and Phil Neville also played immense stretches of their careers with Moyes’ Everton, always willing to do the hard yards and let the likes of Tim Cahill reap the praises with fine finishes and leaping headers.

Similarly, Mikel Arteta was a workhorse under Moyes’ wing. However, the now Arsenal manager was endowed with a footballing intellect and breadth of passing qualities that led the tactician to call his protege “head and shoulders” above the rest.

It’s a shame, with all this in mind, that Everton parted ways with Alex Iwobi a few years back, with the versatile Nigerian seemingly perfect for a dynamic role in Moyes’ Everton team.

Why Iwobi would be perfect for Everton

Everton signed a young Iwobi from Arsenal back in 2018, and he didn’t come cheap.

The Hale End winger arrived in a £34m deal, and he would play 140 times for Everton across five seasons, and he would ebb and flow, finishing his time at a club on a high, though, refashioned into a robust and versatile midfielder, pulled away from the attacking flank berth that had failed to yield prolific returns.

Now 29 years old, Iwobi is certainly something of an unsung hero in the Premier League himself, with journalist Daniel Storey hailing him as “one of the most underrated midfielders in the country” on the Totally Football Show this week.

Iwobi’s impressive – and, crucially, consistent – performances lend credence to that claim, with data-led platform FBref recording him to have ranked among the top 12% of positional peers in the Premier League last season for passes attempted, the top 6% for progressive passes and the top 5% for carries into the final third

Moyes would have loved him, deploying this slick and athletic distributor centrally and out wide, as he did with Arteta way back when.

Iwobi scored nine goals and supplied six assists in the Premier League last year. He created 12 big chances and won 1.2 tackles and 3.1 duels per game.

And this season, he’s started strongly, with a goal and two assists across five appearances under Marco Silva’s wing. Curiously, Silva was the man who welcomed him to Goodison Park.

Trust is a valuable thing in football, with this symbiotic relationship working well for a Fulham side well settled in the top flight after years of inconsistency.

Everton have a range of talented options right now, but Iwobi is an extremely underrated player, and it’s interesting to consider whether he would have stayed put had he known Moyes was heading back to Liverpool.

Here's a detailed look at Nottingham Forest's 10 biggest signings… 10 Neco Williams £17m from Liverpool

Starting the countdown is attacking full-back Neco Williams, who arrived following Nottingham Forest’s promotion in 2022.

He left Liverpool after coming through the Reds’ academy and signed a new four-year contract at the City Ground in 2025.

9 Taiwo Awoniyi £17.5m from Union Berlin

Taiwo Awoniyi was the player tasked with firing Nottingham Forest to safety following their return to the Premier League, and the Nigerian just done that to justify his £17.5m transfer from Union Berlin.

After that, though, Awoniyi fell down the pecking order at the City Ground, with Chris Wood becoming first choice.

8 Morgan Gibbs-White £25m from Wolves

Morgan Gibbs-White has been Nottingham Forest’s standout performer following their return to the Premier League, and he nearly left in 2025 for Tottenham Hotspur.

Instead, the England international signed a new contract at the City Ground, and his initial £25m move from Wolves has proven to be a bargain.

7 Arnaud Kalimuendo £26m from Rennes

Arnaud Kalimuendo scored 18 goals in 34 appearances for Rennes in 2024/25, something which caught the eye of Nottingham Forest in their search for another striker.

The Reds paid £26m to secure the Frenchman’s services, a fee which could be spread out over his five-year contract.

6 James McAtee £30m from Man City

Another player to arrive in 2025 was James McAtee, with Nottingham Forest winning the race to sign the attacking midfielder from Manchester City.

McAtee was a wanted man across Europe and ended up costing Forest £30m, signing a five-year deal on £40,000-a-week.

5 Ibrahim Sangare £30m from PSV

Ibrahim Sangare became Nottingham Forest’s record signing on deadline day in 2023, with those at the City Ground paying £30m to Dutch giants PSV.

Things haven’t exactly go to plan for Sangare, though, who has had his injury issues in the Midlands.

4 Dilane Bakwa £30.5m from Strasbourg

A deadline day addition in September 2025 was winger Dilane Bakwa, who put pen to paper on a City Ground contract just before the window closed in a deal worth just over £30m.

After impressing for Strasbourg, Bakwa, a left-footed right-winger, signed a contract until 2030.

3 Dan Ndoye £34m from Bologna

After qualifying for the Europa League, Dan Ndoye was Nottingham Forest’s first marquee signing in the summer of 2025, costing £34m from Serie A side Bologna.

A Switzerland international, Ndoye can play on either wing and is under contract until 2030.

2 Elliot Anderson £35m from Newcastle

Elliot Anderson’s transfer from Newcastle went down as a £35m fee, and even if it was that, it has proven to be a great piece of business.

However, Forest and the Magpies made a deal at the same time which saw Odysseas Vlachodimos move to St James’ Park for £20m, so really, Anderson set them back just £15m.

1 Omari Hutchinson £37.5m from Ipswich

Top of the charts as Nottingham Forest’s record signing is Omari Hutchinson, who arrived from Ipswich Town in 2025 at a cost of £37.5m.

The winger was a shining light at Portman Road in their only season back in the Premier League, which resulted in Forest swooping for the England U21 international.

Celtic may have biggest Scottish talent since Tierney in "dangerous" teen

It is always nice to see an academy player make their breakthrough and impress at first-team level, at any club, and that is why Colby Donovan’s recent emergence at Celtic has been enjoyable.

Injuries to Alistair Johnston and Anthony Ralston left Brendan Rodgers in a difficult position, facing the possibility of playing a player out of position to cover in that position.

Instead of going with a makeshift right-back, the Hoops boss dipped into the academy to provide 19-year-old Donovan with a chance to impress in the first-team in recent weeks.

The Scottish youngster made his first three appearances for the first-team in games against Kilmarnock, Partick Thistle, and Red Star Belgrade, starting all three matches, before being an unused substitute against Hibernian last weekend.

Donovan did not look out of place in those senior outings for the Scottish giants, winning five of his six ground duels without being dribbled past a single time against Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League, per Sofascore.

The teenage full-back will now be hoping to kick on and establish himself in the senior side, as his fellow full-back Kieran Tierney once did when he first broke through.

Celtic's best Scottish talents since Kieran Tierney

The Scotland international first broke through into the first-team in the 2014/15 campaign, having come up through the academy ranks, and he went on to play 170 matches for the club in all competitions.

Tierney, as shown in the graphic above, enjoyed a terrific first spell with Celtic before his £25m move to Arsenal in the summer of 2019, winning five Scottish Premiership titles in the process.

Unfortunately, quality Scottish academy talents have been few and far between since the left-back’s initial emergence in the first-team for Celtic over a decade ago.

Kieran Tierney

£7.8m

Callum McGregor

£4.3m

Mikey Johnston

£2.6m

Jack Hendry

£2.1m

Liam Henderson

£1.7m

As you can see in the table above, Tierney is still the most valuable former academy star to have made at least one start for the club, whilst Callum McGregor, who came through before the defender, is the only other one who is worth more than £3m.

Ben Doak is valued at £14m, per Transfermarkt, but he only played 25 minutes as a substitute for the Hoops before his move to Liverpool, which meant that the Scottish giants did not get to experience much of his talent on the pitch.

To say that Mikey Johnston, a Glasgow-born player who has 17 caps for Ireland, is the most valuable academy graduate since Tierney at just £2.6m is slightly concerning.

Whilst Donovan will be hoping to kick on and be worth way more than Johnston, Celtic may have their biggest Scottish and academy talent since Tierney in a star who is out on loan.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Jude Bonnar is currently on loan in the Championship with Ayr United until the end of the season, gaining vital development and experience that he could bring to the first-team at Parkhead next term.

Why Bonnar may be the best Scottish talent at Celtic since Tierney

As aforementioned, Celtic have not had much success with Scottish talents coming through their academy system to emerge as regular starters in the first-team since Tierney, but Bonnar has the potential to change that.

The Hamilton-born starlet made his senior debut for Celtic in a 5-1 win over Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership in February of this year, completing 100% (4/4) of his passes in a ten-minute cameo, per Sofascore.

His impressive performances as an attack-minded central midfielder for the B team earned him a chance in the senior side, after a return of ten goals in 55 Lowland League matches in the 2023/24 and 2024/25 campaigns combined, per Transfermarkt.

The teenage whiz, who was described as a “dangerous” player by writer John McGinley, also came back from his loan spell with Ayr to score and grab an assist in a Challenge Cup game against Alloa Athletic for the B team last month.

That performance and his overall form at youth level for Celtic show that he has developed a reputation for being a technical and attack-minded midfielder throughout his development in Glasgow.

However, the 19-year-old star’s loan move to the Championship with Ayr United has provided him with an opportunity to show that there is more to his game in the middle of the park.

Rodgers wants well-rounded midfielders who can provide physicality off the ball as well as technical quality in possession, as shown by the types of midfielders who play regularly for him at the moment: Benjamin Nygren, Reo Hatate, and Callum McGregor.

Bonnar’s last two outings in the Scottish Championship for Ayr United show that the versatile star, who can play in midfield or out on the flank, has added bite to his performances in the middle of the park.

As you can see in the table above, the teenage prospect has won six of his 11 ground duels and three of his five aerial duels, without being dribbled past a single time, in the last two matches.

Bonnar is currently being managed by Celtic legend Scott Brown, who knows a thing or two about what it takes to be a number eight for the Hoops, and he appears to be already developing the physical side of his game under the former Scotland international.

It looks as though sending him out on loan to the Championship to be managed by the ex-Celtic captain was a brilliant decision by the club, because the Scotland U21 international is adding physicality to go with his technical quality.

This is why Bonnar, who has delivered one goal and one assist for Ayr United so far this season, could go on to be the club’s biggest and most valuable Scottish talent since Tierney.

Not Kenny: Celtic's "lightning quick" teen could replace Iheanacho

Celtic have a potential replacement for Kelechi Iheanacho in their academy, and it is not Johnny Kenny.

1 ByDan Emery Sep 30, 2025

The teenage talent already has the technical skills, as shown by his goal record for the B team, but his loan spell shows that he is becoming a complete central midfielder, which could make him an option for Rodgers to integrate into the senior team next season.

It will then be down to Bonnar to produce consistent performances in midfield to show that he is the biggest talent to come through the academy since Tierney.

Celtic have struck gold on Ange signing who's now worth more than Engels

Those of a Celtic persuasion are in mutinous mood right now, and rightly so, having been forced to witness a calamitous summer of transfer activity.

An unbeaten start to the new domestic season has also been overshadowed by last month’s grim Champions League exit, with the failure to properly enhance Brendan Rodgers’ ranks leading up to that tie having undoubtedly backfired.

In the Premiership, away from the chaos, things appear to have gone a little bit stale, with the current crop producing displays that are a far cry from the scintillating style of the glorious Ange Postecoglou era.

The recent drab Glasgow derby was an obvious case in point, with that 0-0 stalemate at odds with Postecoglou’s outfit at their pomp. Just look back to such performances as the 3-0 win over the Ibrox side in February 2022.

Parkhead was at its buoyant best that night, and the football was simply stunning, with the men in green and white almost playing a different game to their beleaguered opponents.

That magic, that ferocious approach, has since been lost.

From plucking bargains from afar under the Aussie, the Hoops have resorted to paying over the odds during the Rodgers regime, with far too many transfer dealings having gone south of late.

Celtic's recruitment record post-Ange

As noted by former Celtic skipper Scott Brown, the club’s recruitment record under Postecoglou was simply “fantastic”, with the experienced coach simply a master at acquiring a hidden gem on the cheap.

Take Matt O’Riley, a player signed for just £1.5m from EFL side MK Dons back in January 2022, before ultimately being sold to Brighton and Hove Albion on a £25m deal in the summer of 2024 – marking a sensational profit.

Such success stories have been few and far between since then, however, with the 2023 summer window proving particularly disastrous. Indeed, of those signed amid Rodgers’ return, only Paulo Bernardo and Hyun-jun Yang are still at the club – albeit with even the Korean having come close to departing for Birmingham City before the recent deadline.

The likes of Gustav Lagerbielke, Maik Nawrocki, Luis Palma and Marco Tilio have all come and gone without so much as leaving a trace, having looked destined to fail from the off amid their limited roles under Rodgers.

While it is too early to judge this summer’s transfer dealings, the recruitment of 12 months ago is also worthy of scrutiny. Adam Idah, for instance, has already been shipped off to Swansea City, while Arne Engels – signed for £11m – has yet to truly establish himself as a regular starter in Glasgow.

Described as “nowhere near the finished article” by his manager, the young Belgian appears to be burdened by such a lofty price tag, with that expensive outlay a constant source of debate among supporters and pundits alike.

The 22-year-old may well still come good, although the race is on to live up to the weight of his transfer fee.

Market Movers

Would the Hoops not have been better off seeking out a bargain instead, in the mould of say Reo Hatate?

How Hatate's value compares to Arne Engels

Reflecting back on that night in the winter of 2022, the rout of Rangers proved a breakout moment for that man Hatate, with the Japanese genius netting two stunning efforts to properly announce himself to the Parkhead faithful.

As per reporter Michael Bridges, Hatate and his compatriots simply “ripped the league to shreds” following their arrival.

Having been signed from Kawasaki Frontale just a few weeks prior, the all-action midfielder quickly made a mockery of his meagre £1.1m price tag, having been a mainstay under both Postecoglou and Rodgers since then.

After chalking up 13 goals and 14 assists in 66 games under the new Nottingham Forest boss, as per Transfermarkt, Hatate has enjoyed a rather similar record under his successor, with 15 goals and 14 assists under his belt from 81 outings.

While Rodgers did hint at the 27-year-old’s “inconsistency” during their first year working together, he did go on to flourish last term, having also got off the mark in 2025/26 with an outrageous effort away at Aberdeen.

That thumping strike emphasises just why the diminutive playmaker is such a “big talent” – in the words of Rodgers – with his overall record of 56 goal involvements in 147 games in all competitions ensuring he has more than made his mark in Glasgow.

Such a stellar impact can also be felt when considering his soaring market value, with Hatate deemed to be worth as much as €13m (£11m), according to Transfermarkt. For comparison, Engels’ value is now said to be around €12m (£10m).

The subject of interest from Serie A side Udinese back in May, before ultimately staying put at Celtic, the 11-cap international looks like a player who will soon rake in a sizeable profit for the club, should he move on in the near future.

In the meantime, however, the hope will be that Hatate can play a central role in trying to revive this limp season for Rodgers and co, with the Hoops in very real danger of merely letting things drift.

'Time for me to say goodbye' – Angelo Mathews to retire from Test cricket

Angelo Mathews will retire from Test cricket after the first Test against Bangladesh in Galle, starting on June 17. He will remain available for white-ball selection “if and when my country needs me”, he said in an announcement on his social media handle.Mathews has not been picked in a white-ball Sri Lanka side in almost a year, but in any case, the forthcoming Test will mark the end of a Test career that will have stretched for 119 appearances. Mathews made his debut in the format in 2009, and has been more-or-less a fixture in the side since.Sri Lanka’s Test schedule is about to dry up, however, and Mathews, who turns 38 next week, would have likely had to have waited until May 2026 to play Tests again.

“The past 17 years of playing cricket for Sri Lanka has been my highest honour and pride,” Mathews said. “I have given everything to cricket and cricket has given me everything in return and made me the person I am today. Whilst I bid adieu to the Test format, as discussed with selectors I will remain available for selection for the white ball format, if and when my country needs me.” With Sri Lanka due to co-host the T20 World Cup with India early in 2026, there is a chance Mathews could be picked in that squad.Mathews captained Sri Lanka in 34 Tests, including in some of their most famous victories, especially in Headingley in 2014, where his 160 in the second innings turned the match.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

As a batter, his career tally of 8167 runs puts him third on Sri Lanka’s all-time list, behind Kumar Sangakkara (12, 400) and Mahela Jayawardene (11,814). He presently has 16 hundreds, and a Test average of 44.62. Mathews has only sporadically bowled in Tests, but has 33 wickets in the format. In his greatest stretch of form, between 2013 and 2015, Mathews scaled peaks rarely reached by Sri Lanka batters, hitting 2378 runs at an average of 59.45. Almost all those runs came with him batting at No. 5 or No. 6.While he never matched that level of batting output again, he has nevertheless been a significant contributor in Tests, notably in 2022 and 2023, when he hit 2141 runs (both years together) at an average of 51.15, though by this stage he had moved up to No. 4. His most-recent Test hundred came against Afghanistan in February 2024.His Test career has not been without controversy, particularly around 2017 and 2018, when he had been in a public standoff with then-coach Chandika Hathurusinghe. The last few years of his career have been characterised by a greater emphasis on his fitness, after the middle period of his career had been hampered by various leg injuries.

Hampshire hit back from last week’s thrashing by Nottinghamshire in emphatic style with an 89-run Rothesay County Championship win over Warwickshire inside three days at Edgbaston.Set a target of 310, Warwickshire were all out for 220, unpicked by seamers James Fuller and Kyle Abbott. Alex Davies, with 66 from 106 balls, and Ethan Bamber (43) offered some resistance but the rest were blown away by a Hampshire side resurgent after their surrender at Trent Bridge.Hampshire’s second innings had closed in the morning on 203. Beau Webster took 4 for 57 and Bamber 4 for 60 but the match was decided by the visitors outbowling their hosts on a pitch which offered encouragement to seamers throughout. After Hampshire resumed on 159 for 6, already 275 ahead, Bamber quickly struck twice when Brad Wheal edged to second slip and Fuller’s middle-stump was sent flying by an inside-edged slog. Abbott pulled Bamber for six in a handy run-a-ball stand of 32 with Toby Albert before Webster had Albert and John Turner caught behind in three balls.A target of 310 offered an intriguing last chapter to an engrossing match and Warwickshire’s chase began spectacularly. They were 10 for 2 after three overs after Abbott hit Rob Yates’ off stump, Davies struck his first two balls for four and Tom Latham edged Abbott to wicketkeeper Ben Brown.Unfazed by the rocky start, Davies and Sam Hain added 68 in 24 overs. Hain looked in excellent form on his way to 30 but his season’s story so far of getting in then getting out continued when he offered no shot to an Abbott in-ducker and was lbw.Davies reached a 66-ball half-century but was among the casualties as Fuller unleashed a ferocious spell from the Pavilion End, ripping out 3 for 3 in 12 balls. Webster and Davies were trapped in front by balls that kept low, either side of Ed Barnard tickling an outswinger to the keeper. At 126 for 6, Warwickshire needed something special from their lower order on a pitch which had yielded just one half-century in each innings. It was understandably beyond them. Zen Malik hoisted Turner to fine leg. Bamber and Che Simmons fought hard to add 43 in 17 overs before Fuller returned to complete his five-for by removing both. Bamber edged behind, Simmons lofted to long leg and when Turner flattened Olly Hannon-Dalby’s off-stump, Hampshire’s reassertion of their qualities was complete.

Joao Felix is on fire! Al-Nassr star bags hat-trick and Cristiano Ronaldo makes up for missed penalty with outrageous goal in comfortable win

Cristiano Ronaldo made amends for a penalty miss by scoring a stunning goal in the second half, while Joao Felix stole the limelight with a sublime hat-trick to help Al-Nassr pick up a thumping 5-1 win over Al Fateh on Saturday in the Saudi Pro League. Jorge Jesus' side maintained their 100 per cent record in the league, as they remained at the top of the table with 15 points from their first five games.

Felix shines with hat-trick and Ronaldo scores a stunner

Al-Nassr went all guns blazing right from the start and kept the Al Fateh backline busy with a barrage of attacks. Ronaldo and Kingsley Coman came close to breaking the deadlock twice each within the first 10 minutes of the match but failed to keep their shots on target. The deadlock, however, was broken in the 13th minute when Sadio Mane found Felix with a square pass on the edge of the box and the former Chelsea and Barcelona star found the back of the net with a screamer of a shot.

A minute later, Felix thought he had scored again when he found the back of the net from a rebound after Ronaldo's shot was blocked by Al Fateh goalkeeper Amin Bukhari, but the linesman raised the offside flag as the Al-Nassr skipper was found in an offside position while receiving the ball.

On the stroke of half-time, Ronaldo did well to glide past two of his markers near the edge of the box before launching a powerful shot which rattled the crossbar and came back. Felix had an opportunity to increase the goals tally but the shot went wide. Al Fateh headed into the break after surviving a series of Al-Nassr attacks as the scoreboard still read 1-0.

The visitors made a shock comeback within the first 10 minutes of the second half as Karl Toko Ekambi made a brilliant run down the middle and received a long ball from the defence. The winger then saw his shot blocked at first but from the rebound, Sofiane Bendebka found the back of the net.

Al-Nassr had an opportunity to restore their lead four minutes after the equaliser as an Al Fateh defender accidentally handled the ball inside the box, while trying to block a cross. After a VAR check, a penalty was awarded, albeit harshly. Ronaldo stepped up and took the spot-kick but Bukhari anticipated the kick perfectly and dove to his left to stop the penalty.

The 40-year-old responded almost immediately and proved why he is an all-time great as he unleashed a pile driver from the edge of the box to outclass Bukhari this time and put his team in front. Ronaldo went overboard with his celebration as he removed his shirt, which led to a yellow card.

In the 68th minute, Felix finally completed his brace as he received a pass from Ronaldo near the box and went inside before dribbling past two Al Fateh defenders and pushed the ball into the net. Minutes later, Kingsley Coman scored a fourth goal for the Saudi giants as he hit the net after receiving a pass from Angelo Gabriel.

Felix soon completed his second hat-trick of the 2025-26 campaign as he tapped in a rebound ball after Sadio Mane's solo effort from inside the box was cleared from the goal line.

Felix was clinical with his finishing on the night as he completed his second hat-trick since scoring his maiden one on his Saudi Pro League debut in August against Al-Taawoun. The Portuguese striker has experienced a dream turnaround in his career since moving to Saudi Arabia, as he now has 11 goals in 10 matches across all competitions.

The big loser

Al Fateh defenders had a nightmare outing as they looked clueless in front of a fierce Al-Nassr attack right from the start. The margin could have been higher had the likes of Ronaldo, Felix or Coman not squandered easy chances in the first half. Bukhari had an impressive outing between the sticks and had even pulled out a stunning penalty save of Ronaldo, but the goalkeeper was let down by his backline.
