Fresh report now reveals just how close Gary O’Neil is to Wolves exit

A fresh update regarding the future of Wolves boss Gary O’Neil has emerged ahead of his side’s clash with Crystal Palace.

Winless Wolves face relegation rat-race

Wolves bravely battled back from 2-0 down to rescue a point at the AMEX stadium in their most recent Premier League outing, with Matheus Cunha finding the net in stoppage time to complete the comeback after Brighton had squandered a glorious chance to make it 3-1.

After the game, O’Neil held up his hands, admitting that he had got it wrong in the first half.

“I’m a little bit disappointed, with myself really, that I started with five [at the back]. I know we did well with a five-back against Manchester City, and [I thought] the lads deserved another go at it.

“I didn’t think a five-back would fit very well against Brighton today, but at least we were quick enough to change it at half-time.

“At 85 minutes, when Brighton scored their second goal, I thought I was going to be stood here answering some more tough questions.”

However, beyond the short-term jubilation the reality of their situation once more set in for Wolves, who are one of three sides yet to win a game this season and sit 19th in the Premier League almost a quarter of the way into the season. They have just two points and have conceded a mammoth 25 goals, five more than any other side in the division.

ByBrett Worthington Oct 30, 2024 Gary O'Neil given two games to save his job

Now, a fresh report has claimed that the Wolves boss is under increasing pressure to deliver results at Molineux. So far, there has been an acceptance that Wolves have faced one of the hardest starts to the season of any Premier League season, playing all of the current top five (Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Aston Villa) as well as Newcastle United.

Now though, there is set to be a change of tone, with Football Insider reporting that the next two games are crucial in O’Neil’s future in the Wolves technical area. The Old Gold face 18th placed Crystal Palace in their next game, before a mammoth clash with bottom of the table Southampton ahead of the November international break.

Wolves’ next five games

Crystal Palace (Home)

Southampton (Home)

Fulham (Away)

Bournemouth (Home)

Everton (Away)

And they claim that poor results in those games will “change the mood’” in the Midlands, with the upcoming games “critical” for O’Neil’s future, though it is added that the Wolves boss “still has the backing of the changing room”.

However, failure to pick up points against their direct relegation rivals may prove too much for both the Wolves fans and the board, with the prospect of a drop to the Championship likely to become an increasing reality.

Should Wolves part ways with O’Neil over the international break, any new manager would be the beneficiary of a favourable run of games, with the Old Gold not facing a member of the “top six” again until Boxing Day.

Stafanie Taylor has been named captain of West Indies’ 15-player squad for the Women’s World Cup, which begins in New Zealand next month.Taylor recently missed the final match of West Indies’ ODI series in South Africa after sustaining a concussion. Anisa Mohammed, who led the side in Taylor’s absence, has been appointed vice-captain for the World Cup, which the experienced offspinner goes into one wicket shy of reaching 300 in international cricket. There are five players in the squad who could make their World Cup debuts – Aaliyah Alleyne, Cherry-Ann Fraser, Chinelle Henry, Karishma Ramharack and Rashada Williams – while legspinner Afy Fletcher has been included, having made her comeback in South Africa after maternity leave.West Indies have also named three traveling reserves as part of the tournament’s Covid-19 protocols: Kaysia Schultz, Mandy Mangru and Jannillea Glasgow.”The squad selected shows a blend of youth and experience,” selector Ann Browne-John said. “We have Anisa Mohammed who’s playing in her fifth World Cup and will help guide the younger ones selected. We have five players who have had their maiden Cricket World Cup selection.”The team just completed a series against South Africa where the players got good preparation before the Tournament. There were some relatively good showings with a few players having outstanding performances and it is expected that they would raise their levels even further during the competition.”Afy Fletcher’s return strengthens the bowling department as she continues to be a world class legspinner.”Having travelled to New Zealand from South Africa, West Indies have now completed managed isolation and begun their preparations for the World Cup in Christchurch. They will help kick off the tournament when they take on the hosts at Bay Oval on March 4.Squad: Stafanie Taylor (capt), Anisa Mohammed (vice-capt), Aaliyah Alleyne, Shemaine Campbelle, Shamilia Connell, Deandra Dottin, Afy Fletcher, Cherry Ann Fraser, Chinelle Henry, Kycia Knight, Hayley Matthews, Chedean Nation, Karishma Ramharack, Shakera Selman, Rashada Williams

Lage sold Ait-Nouri’s replacement who’s now ouranking every Wolves player

Over the past few summers, Wolverhampton Wanderers have become a very smart selling club. They have made plenty of profit selling several key players, and although that has arguably had a detrimental effect on their form, the Old Gold have still developed a reputation as an intelligent club in the market.

The four prominent sales over the past two summers include former club captain Ruben Neves and his Portugal teammate Matheus Nunes in 2023. Last summer, they sold another club captain, Max Kilman, and winger Pedro Neto.

It remains to be seen who Wolves’ next major sale will be, but Rayan Ait-Nouri is one player who has impressed during his time at the club.

Ait-Nouri’s Wolves career

Algerian left wing-back Ait-Nouri has been a revelation for Gary O’Neil’s side this season. He joined the club on an initial loan deal from French side Angers in 2020, making the move permanent the following summer.

Ait-Nouri

It is fair to say that Ait-Nouri has been really impressive since making the move to the Midlands. In 129 games for the club so far, he has ten goals and ten assists but has performed particularly well the past two seasons.

In 2023/24, the former Angers defender scored three goals and grabbed two assists in 38 games in all competitions. He has been even better this season and has already equalled that tally in the Premier League, with 12 appearances under his belt; it will be incredibly surprising if he doesn’t exceed it.

Ait-Nouri’s standout performances for the Old Gold have led him to be linked with some of England’s biggest clubs. One recent report states that he is “high on the wishlist” of Ruben Amorim, as he looks to strengthen his new Manchester United squad.

If Wolves do lose one of their star players once again in January or the summer, they may wish they had kept hold of a ready-made replacement, Ruben Vingare, instead of selling him a few years ago.

Vinagre’s Wolves career

Portuguese left-back Vingare did not have a smooth ride at Molineux. He joined the club on a permanent deal in 2018, following a loan spell, just as Ait-Nouri did a few years later. He made the move from French side Monaco.

ruben-vinagre-wolves

The former Portugal uner-21 international managed just 70 appearances for the Old Gold, spread out over the course of several seasons. He scored three times and grabbed two assists in that time, but never became a permanent fixture in the side.

He went on several loan spells throughout his time contracted to the club, including a move to Greek side Olympiakos in 2020. Interestingly, that coincided with the loan move of Ait-Nouri, and The Athletic’s Tim Spiers confirmed the two transfers were related.

Spiers explained on X at the time that the Algerian was signed “to replace Vinagre in the squad”, a like-for-like swap.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

After leaving Molineux permanently in 2022 under then-boss Bruno Lage, and moving back to his native country to join Sporting, it was still not easy for Vinagre to settle at a particular club. He returned on loan to England twice, joining Everton and Hull City.

His deal at the Tigers ended in January 2024, and he spent the second half of last season playing for Hellas Verona.

Finally, this season, the left-back seems to have discovered his best form. Now playing for Polish side Legia Warsaw, he has nine assists in 24 games in all competitions, including two in just three Conference League outings.

It is somewhat ironic that the man loaned out to make room for Ait-Nouri is now outperforming him from an assists point of view this term, with that tally of nine better than any every member of the Wolves squad in 2024/25. Equally, only Matheus Cunha (ten goals and assists) boasts more total goal involvements among those at Molineux than Vinagre so far this season.

Environment is everything for a footballer, and Vinagre is clearly playing for a club where he can flourish. Wolves fans may well look back at his time at Molineux and wish it had panned out differently. They could have had a perfect Ait-Nouri replacement right under their noses all along.

West Indies collapse after Mandhana, Harmanpreet centuries as India seal NRR-boosting win

West Indies go down after a 100-run stand for the first wicket to lose their first game of the World Cup so far

Annesha Ghosh12-Mar-2022India weathered a blistering opening stand between Deandra Dottin and Hayley Matthews to script a vital 155-run win over West Indies that propelled them to the top of the World Cup table. In the early stages of India’s defence of 317, their highest World Cup total, the result seemed far from obvious, and the centuries from Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur somewhat inadequate. Sneh Rana and Meghna Singh, however, decisively turned the tide India’s way at Seddon Park as Dottin’s wicket triggered West Indies’ slump from 100 for no loss to 162 all out.West Indies gave them a good chance of extending their winning streak after galloping to 50 in five overs, 81 in the wicketless powerplay, and 100 in just 12. The dominant hand in their blazing start, and West Indies’ maiden century stand, was Dottin’s, despite her back and legs requiring regular repairwork during her 62-run knock. Dottin carted 11 boundaries in her breathtaking 46-ball innings.India sought respite from the Dottin-Matthews onslaught but received little despite using two quicks and spinners each in the powerplay. It was third-change Rana’s frugal, game-changing opening spell that led to West Indies’ collapse.Dottin top-edged an attempted sweep to Rana’s second ball to Meghna at short fine-leg, and it was Meghna who then took over and dealt West Indies the second blow, Kycia Knight’s pull going to Mandhana at deep square-leg. Meghna followed it up with Stafanie Taylor’s wicket before Rana removed Matthews for 48. In both dismissals, wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh pouched the edges with ease.Sneh Rana dismissed both the West Indies openers after a strong start•ICC via GettyEarlier, India’s batters, led by Mandhana and Harmanpreet, pulled no punches in a game they needed to win to stay safe in the race to the knockouts following the loss to New Zealand at the same venue. They put on their highest total in ODI World Cups – and the overall highest in this edition – after choosing to bat first.Mandhana hit 123 in 119, and Harmanpreet 109 in 107, and they put on 184 for the fourth wicket, India’s best in ODI World Cups, to lift them from 78 for 3.On a used surface, India almost instantly shook off the hesitancy that stifled them in the powerplay against Pakistan and New Zealand, Yastika Bhatia’s fearless stroke play underpinning their approach early on. Bhatia got off the mark with a four off a mistimed cut that flew over the slips, and next over, she cracked three fours off pulls as Chinelle Henry gave away 15 runs to begin her day.India’s rapid start led West Indies to introduce spin in the sixth over. But it was the change at the other end, in the form of medium-pacer Shakera Selman, that brought the breakthrough when, on 31, Bhatia lobbed a dolly back to Selman off a slower delivery. Another soft dismissal followed, this time Mithali Raj, who became the captain with most appearances on the day, falling to Matthews.Mandhana, meanwhile, steadied the ship at one end, though the two early wickets made her cautious. India got to 62 for 2 in the powerplay, the best in that phase before West Indies bettered it in the chase, and No. 4 Deepti Sharma’s back-to-back fours off Selman promised a lot. That, however, was not to be. Coming on in the 13th over, Anisa Mohammed drew an edge off Deepti’s slog-sweep, which Matthews intercepted with a stunning one-handed grab behind the keeper.Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin gave West Indies a brilliant start with a quick 100-run stand•ICC via Getty ImagesWith India 100 for 3, 20 overs in, it was down to Mandhana and Harmanpreet to lift them to the 250-run mark, which they hadn’t reached in this World Cup before this game. On 34 off 51 balls, Mandhana struck her first four – a languid flick through the midwicket area – and upped the tempo thereafter. She got to her second fifty in the tournament with another flick, on the 60th ball of her innings, and her next 50 runs came off just 43 balls. With 200 up in the 36th over, Mandhana cracked a 78-metre six off Aaliyah Alleyne as fielding errors came thick and fast. After reaching the 90s with a four, Mandhana got a big slice of luck when, on 94, Alleyne dropped her at deep midwicket. Shamilia Connell tested her with a short ball and even pinged her pad, but Mandhana survived, and a four, courtesy a short-arm pull off Matthews, took her to her second ODI World Cup century, and second against West Indies. Three of her 13 fours on the day came off back-to-back deliveries as Matthews found herself at the receiving end in the 42nd over. India had crossed 250 by then and as Harmanpreet looked to up the ante at her end, Mandhana pulled one straight to deep midwicket to be dismissed.Harmanpreet, too, paced her innings well. A drop by Anisa at short third handed her a reprieve when on 20. She remained boundary-less in her first 20 balls but struck 12, two of them sixes, off her next 87. It was her strike rotation, though, that accounted for the bulk – 57 – of her 109 runs. Harmanpreet, unsurprisingly, relied heavily on the sweep but it was a full-blooded lofted shot that brought up her second straight fifty. She batted close to three hours and faced issues with her wrist as she neared the three-digit milestone. But neither pain nor West Indies could keep her from bringing up her first century in the format since her epochal 171 not out in the semi-final of the 2017 World Cup. A single down the bowler’s right steered her to the mark, and a 15-run over from Anisa soon after lifted India past 300.India’s 317 for 8 eventually proved too much for West Indies as they were rolled over inside 41 overs. On a day of record-breaking feats, Jhulan Goswami added the finishing touch with the wicket of Anisa, and she rose to the top of the wicket-takers’ tally in women’s ODI World Cups. Fittingly, it was Rana who closed out the game, catching Connell off her own bowling.

Did Sir Jim Ratcliffe lie about Man Utd job cuts? 'Bust by Christmas' claim 'debunked' after club announce plans for new £2bn stadium

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been accused of being "disingenuous" over Manchester United's finances, after claiming they could "go bust by Christmas".

Sir Jim Ratcliffe claimed that United could go "bust by Christmas" as he attempted to rationalise swingeing cuts, that have seen a multitude of the Red Devils' staff members lose their jobs. However, that claim has now been placed into doubt, especially within the context of the announcement of a new stadium.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Kieran Maguire, a finance expert who works for the University of Liverpool, said that the Red Devils had actually forecast a profit of up to £160 million ($207m) before Ratcliffe's cuts took hold. It is true that United have made losses of over £400m ($518m), and also owe over £300m ($388m) in outstanding transfer fees. Maguire, though, contends that multiple clubs face similar problems.

WHAT MAGUIRE SAID

Maguire told the , after calling Ratcliffe's claims 'very disingenuous': "If you go to Manchester United Investor Relations, you’ll see this prediction of the upper end of £140 million-£160 million of EBITDA profit for the financial year 2024-25. So, that would indicate that they’re probably not too worried about a cash-flow issue."

He added: "Every single club buys players on credit. So, Manchester United are not alone in that. They certainly owe less than Chelsea and you don’t see Chelsea announcing 400 job losses. For a company that’s floated on the New York Stock Exchange, that’s quite an inflammatory comment. To me, it’s incredibly unprofessional. If you take a look at the share price last night, it dipped. Not significantly. But you would think that somebody who is used to running a business would be aware of coming out with market-sensitive comments like that."

Malinga named Rajasthan Royals' fast-bowling coach for IPL 2022

Rajasthan Royals have roped in Lasith Malinga as their fast-bowling coach ahead of IPL 2022, and Paddy Upton as “Team Catalyst”.Malinga, who retired as a player in 2021, is the highest wicket-taker in the IPL with 170 scalps across nine seasons for Mumbai Indians. In 2018, he was Mumbai’s bowling mentor as well, and earlier this year, he was appointed Sri Lanka’s bowling strategy coach for the T20I series in Australia. At Royals, Malinga will work alongside his former captain Kumar Sangakkara, who is the franchise’s head coach and director of cricket, and Steffan Jones, who was named as high-performance fast-bowling coach last week.”It’s a wonderful feeling for me to return to the IPL and an absolute honour to join Rajasthan Royals, a franchise that has always promoted and developed young talent,” Malinga said. “I am excited by the pace bowling unit we have going into the tournament and looking forward to supporting all the fast bowlers with the execution of their game-plans and their overall development. I’ve made some very special memories in the IPL with Mumbai Indians and now with Royals, looking forward to new experiences and creating great memories in this journey.”Upton returns to Royals having previously worked as their coach from 2013 to 2015 and then in 2019, leading them to a top-four finish in 2013 and 2015. He will be with the team for the first four weeks of the season, after which he will support them virtually.”Being the Team Catalyst, Upton will play a crucial role in establishing team integration by bringing them together as a cohesive and mutually supporting unit, and look after their mental well-being with the use of various mental conditioning processes and activities that aid in maintaining a healthy culture and environment, especially within the restrictions of being in a bio-bubble,” a Royals statement said.Sangakkara said both Malinga and Upton would be great additions to the coaching staff. “Lasith is arguably one of the greatest T20 fast bowlers of all time, and to have a personality like his around the training ground, and the expertise he brings to the table, is certainly something we feel the team can benefit from,” he said. “We have some of the best fast bowlers in our squad and we are delighted that they will have the chance to work with Lasith and get to learn and develop further.”It’s the same with Paddy, who has been a great servant for the Royals, and has done an exceptional job in building that cohesion between players and also conditioning them mentally. We believe he will act as a great addition to our coaching staff.”Trevor Penney (assistant coach), Zubin Bharucha (strategy, development and performance director) and Dishant Yagnik (fielding coach) will continue in their respective roles.

West Brom’s "incredible" loan star is now worth £14m more since leaving

West Bromwich Albion will be seeking out their first Championship win in three games when Sheffield United come to town this coming weekend.

The Baggies have fallen victim to far too many draws in the second tier so far, with a staggering ten already accumulated in league action, which has come at the cost of only six wins being notched up.

Still, only two defeats have come their way, with Carlos Corberan at least pleased with how defensively resolute his side can be, even when victories aren’t always collected.

West Brom's defenders this season

Amazingly, Watford – who occupy sixth spot in the Championship currently at the expense of the West Midlands outfit – have conceded double the amount the Baggies have leaked, with West Brom only shipping 12 next to the Hornets’ 24.

The latest draw away at Preston North End could have easily ended in a disappointing loss if it wasn’t for the likes of Kyle Bartley and Mason Holgate at the back, with the imposing centre-back duo winning 11 duels between them come full-time to keep the Lilywhites at bay.

Alongside Bartley and Holgate, both Darnell Furlong and Thorgen Heggem have also been reliable presences down the flanks for Corberan and Co this campaign to date, with both players everpresent members of the first team even when results haven’t always been rosy.

Of course, everyone at the club would want more wins to ensure a playoff spot is achieved, but the ex-Huddersfield Town boss will still be proud of his players for continuing to battle to stave off any unwanted losses.

Even though he will be content with the defensive numbers he has at his disposal, Corberan would be very unlikely to reject this former loan star’s presence if he returned in a theoretical world, with the centre-back in question going on to star at the very top after lining up at the Hawthorns briefly.

West Brom's loan star is now shining

It might well be forgotten about now that Tosin Adarabioyo was once a wide-eyed youngster on loan at the Baggies, with the towering 6 foot 5 gem attempting to make a name for himself away from then-parent club Manchester City in 2018.

Adarabioyo would impress in his new surroundings, going on to make 36 appearances for the club in total and picking up two assists along the way, as his loan employers entered into the Championship playoff picture.

Off the back of this formative stint away from the Etihad, the now 27-year-old would eventually go on to prove himself as a Premier League capable performer at Fulham, before a major move to near neighbours Chelsea then took shape.

Adarabioyo would go on to tally up 132 games at Craven Cottage before leaving for Stamford Bridge, which would lead to football journalist Zach Lowy labelling him as “incredible” and his transfer value would rise too far above the measly amount he was worth when once donning a West Brom kit.

This summer, the brand new Chelsea number four was worth in the region of £16.5m – according to Transfermarkt – after once having a low £2.8m value next to his name as a youngster at the Hawthorns, which is a mammoth increase of £13.7m or 489%.

Chelsea wouldn’t even have to fork out a single dime to win their man in the end, having purchased him on a free transfer at the expense of the Cottagers, which looks to be a very wise investment when you consider his promising numbers in Europe for the Blues recently.

He would even score against Noah in mid-November, having also impressed with 97 accurate passes registered, as Chelsea fans long for more from their fresh recruit as 2025 comes into view.

Whilst Adarabioyo continues to knock on the door for more first-team minutes at Stamford Bridge, Corberan’s mind will be on steering his team to more wins in the division below, away from his side being stern at the back.

Liverpool’s transfer team desperate to sign "world class" £4m-a-year star

Liverpool’s transfer team are believed to be huge admirers of a “world class” attacking player having the season of his life in Italy, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

Liverpool transfer news

Plenty of transfer stories continue to emerge regarding the Reds, with La Liga pair Williot Swedberg and Alberto Moleiro linked with moves to Anfield. They are at Celta Vigo and Las Palmas currently, with both capable of shining in wide roles.

Liverpool will need to find a long-term replacement for Andy Robertson at left-back, considering the Scot is now 30 years of age, and Bournemouth hero Milos Kerkez has emerged as a primary target in that position. Only recently, he assisted twice in his side’s impressive 2-0 win at home to Manchester City in the Premier League.

Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson is an alternative option to bring in, with a swap deal involving current Reds man Kostas Tsimikas even mooted. The USA international has continued to be a consistent performer for the Cottagers this season, bagging three assists in 11 league appearances.

Meanwhile, Lyon youngster Rayan Cherki has been backed to join Liverpool and his current club may even be forced to sell him, given their perilous financial situation.

Liverpool keen on signing "world class" USMNT star

According to a report from Calciomercato [via Sport Witness], Liverpool’s transfer team like AC Milan attacker Christian Pulisic “a lot”, as they eye a move for him.

That said, the Reds signing him could be dependent on Federico Chiesa’s future at Anfield, with the Italian struggling to get going since his switch from Juventus in the summer transfer window. The £50m-rated USA star is seen as “untransferable” by Milan, though, so it won’t be easy for the Merseysiders to get their man.

The £4m-a-year-earning Pulisic could be an interesting option for Liverpool, with the winger still only 26 and enjoying a fantastic season currently. He has registered eight goal contributions (five goals and three assists) in just 10 Serie A starts in 2024/25, while in the Champions League, he opened the scoring against the Reds in Arne Slot’s side’s eventual 3-1 victory at the San Siro back in September, and provided an assist against Real Madrid.

USA legend Alexi Lalas has made his feelings about Pulisic known, too, calling him “world class” recently and saying: “What is world class? Well, you’ve got your definition, I have my definition. But if you want to know what world class is, it’s Christian Pulisic.”

Granted, Pulisic hasn’t yet enjoyed the incredible career many predicted when he was a teenager during his spell at Borussia Dortmund, but he remains a big talent with Premier League experience under his belt.

He scored 20 times in 98 appearances in the competition during his stint with Chelsea, but he is now a more polished footballer who could deliver even more consistency in the final third.

It does look as though a move will be hard to get over the line, however, and it could be argued that there are more pressing positions for Liverpool to be focusing on, such as left-back and central midifeld.
