Spurs must regret losing their Cole Palmer clone on a free transfer

Tottenham Hotspur has been the home to many talented homegrown players in recent times, helping the club push for a regular top-four finish in the Premier League.

Harry Kane is undoubtedly the biggest name to be a success over the last 15 years, breaking into the first team back in the 2013/14 campaign.

The striker ended up making 428 appearances for Spurs over a 10-year period, scoring 279 goals – becoming the club’s record goalscorer in the process.

The 31-year-old left North London in a £100m deal including add-ons to join Bayern Munich last summer, leaving a huge gap in the final third for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Kane has continued to thrill at international level, making his 100th appearance during the recent break, starring alongside a player who has taken the division by storm over the last 12 months.

Cole Palmer’s time at Chelsea

Winger Cole Palmer completed a shock move to Chelsea from Manchester City in a £40m deal last summer, after the youngster was only utilised as an impact player under Pep Guardiola.

However, Kane's teammate at international level has taken his career to the next level at Stamford Bridge, registering a staggering tally of goal contributions since his big-money transfer.

The 22-year-old registered 25 goals and 15 assists in his 45 appearances in all competitions last season, finishing the league campaign with the most goal contributions of any player in the division.

Palmer has continued his excellent form into the new season, contributing with one goal and four assists so far under new boss Enzo Maresca – with four of his contributions coming in the huge 6-2 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

His sensational form has seen him become a regular in the England setup, further showcasing his rapid rise to stardom in the last 12 months.

However, Spurs could have had their answer to the youngster, but they offloaded him a couple of years ago with the former academy ace going on to have a successful career away from the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

The Spurs talent who could have been their answer to Palmer

Marcus Edwards is a product of the Spurs academy, spending 13 years at the club as a youngster, before leaving on a free transfer in 2019 to join Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes.

Sporting winger Marcus Edwards.

However, fast forward to 2024, the Englishman is now starring for Sporting Lisbon, with the club potentially regretting their decision to offload the forward.

He’s scored 22 goals in his 114 appearances for Lisbon, ranking similar to Chelsea ace Palmer via FBref based on their respective displays during the last 12 months.

When delving into their respective stats from last season, Edwards may have scored fewer goals but did manage a higher shot-on-target accuracy, proving he’s more accurate with his efforts in front of goal.

The Sporting talent also managed 5.2 progressive carries per 90 – a tally that Palmer couldn’t match – showcasing his talent at driving with the ball into the final third.

As a result of his impressive displays in Portugal, Edwards has seen his market value soar to £17.5m as per Transfermarkt, a huge increase after his release on a free transfer from Spurs back in 2019.

It’s evident that the 25-year-old has a lot of talent that would be of use to Postecoglou in 2024, with the club undoubtedly offloading the star way too soon.

His talent has been reflected in his stats, with the winger outperforming Palmer in numerous areas, highlighting the regret the club must have in allowing him to leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Paine vows players will work with Langer following emergency talks

Australia’s leaders held a call on Wednesday night to discuss tensions between the players and the coach

Australia Test captain Tim Paine has vowed the players will work with embattled coach Justin Langer over the next six months following a “robust” emergency zoom meeting between Cricket Australia’s leaders on Wednesday.CA chairman Earl Eddings and CEO Nick Hockley held a zoom call with Paine, Australia’s limited-overs captain Aaron Finch, and vice-captain Pat Cummins on the same day Hockley issued a public statement supporting Langer.Speaking on his own radio show Paine confirmed he had spoken to Langer personally over the last 48 hours while the coach was in hotel quarantine in Adelaide, following a flurry of media speculation about tensions between the players and the coach.”There’s no hiding from it, it’s been a tough week, certainly for Justin Langer than it has been for anyone else,” Paine said. “We’ve had some really robust conversations among our leaders in the last few days and we’re really looking forward to the next six months with JL.”We’re looking forward to the World Cup, we’re looking forward to the Ashes, it’s an exciting period for any cricketer. If anything, I think we’re heading into that tournament and series even more galvanised and even more together.”It was important that myself, Aaron Finch, Pat Cummins, and the leaders of Australian cricket got around him, discussed things that needed to be discussed, and then got around him and supported him and looked to move forward.”There’s no doubt the week has been difficult for him, but as I said the last few days, we’ve been able to galvanise around him, to have some really robust discussions on where we want to take this cricket team, what we expect of him and what he expects of us. The T20 World Cup and the Ashes are probably two of the biggest things that any Australian cricket and any Australian coach want’s to be a part of and we’re all on the same page and can’t wait to get started on both of those huge projects for us.”Related

Paine admitted that the issues which had bubbled over this week were not new but was at pains to stress the team’s decline in form over the past 18 months in both Test and T20 cricket should not be blamed entirely on the coach.”The stuff that was reported if we’re totally honest wasn’t anything new, this is stuff that’s been dragged up from an Ashes series two or three years ago, Paine said.”We’ve had ongoing discussions with JL. JL’s had ongoing discussions with me and his players about us always wanting to get better.”It’s just been a bit of shame, I think, in the last week that a lot of the failings around Australian cricket have been pinned on JL. That’s certainly not the case. We haven’t lived up to our own standards on the field. We haven’t won enough games of cricket and that’s pretty much put us all under pressure.””But that’s the world we live in. We’re playing professional sport. You’re judged really harshly when you don’t win. We’ve clearly had a bit of a rough trot with white-ball cricket. The red-ball team hasn’t been playing. So there’s been a lot of sitting around and a lot of chatting.”Australia have played just four Tests since January 2020, which has left a lot of time for the series loss to India last summer to fester. Paine said his next task was to speak to each player individually and in groups over the phone.”I think in the next few days, no doubt with what has gone on, we’ll be looking to get the group together, whether that’s in small groups on a zoom call,” Paine said. “It’s obviously impossible to get face to face at the moment with half of our team in quarantine in Adelaide and the other half in lockdown in New South Wales.”What we’re doing this week is trying to get everyone on a number of calls. Take them along for the journey with what we have discussed and decided on over the last few days and how we want to take this team forward.”

Mahmudullah happy with 'positive competition' within Bangladesh T20I squad

‘Rankings don’t necessarily show the real picture,’ captain says as he hopes the team would continue to keep the momentum going against New Zealand

Mohammad Isam31-Aug-2021Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah believes healthy competition within the side, which has led to players being more confident, gives a fairer assessment of the team rather than the one based on rankings.Head coach Russell Domingo earlier said that the veteran Mushfiqur Rahim and Nurul Hasan – who impressed in the recent series against Zimbabwe and Australia – will share wicketkeeping duties in the first four matches during the home T20I series against New Zealand. Bangladesh also have four options for the opening slot in Soumya Sarkar, Mohammad Naim, Liton Das and Mahedi Hasan.Related

Tom Latham on Bangladesh T20Is: 'Things won't be easy over here'

Nurul and Rahim to split keeping duties during NZ series

“Liton is an outstanding opener while Soumya has been in good form this year,” Mahmudullah said. ” Naim has been one of the top-ranked batter in our side. Mahedi is also an opening option. They are all in good rhythm. We have to make sure those who get the opportunity can contribute for the team. The positive competition within the team is a good sign.”There is some competition in their pace attack, too. Mustafizur Rahman and Shoriful Islam seem to be the preferred pair but Mohammad Saifuddin has grabbed the limited opportunities well in recent times, with Taskin Ahmed and Rubel Hossain lurking around. Bangladesh also have Kamrul Islam Rabbi and Shahidul Islam in the extended squad.”Shoriful bowled well in four matches (against Australia),” Mahmudullah said. “Mustafiz has been outstanding. Taskin has been bowling well but not getting enough opportunities. We have Rubel. Saifuddin made most of the opportunity. There’s good competition going on in every department.

“You can consider yourself favourites in T20s, but if it becomes overconfidence, it can be negative for you. Having said that, they [Bangladesh] are a very disciplined side in their homework and execution level.”Mahmudullah

“I think the fielding has improved a lot. These are good signs to become a better team. Rankings and a team’s shape doesn’t necessarily show the real picture of a team. Playing well continuously usually takes the team forward.”But Mahmudullah was careful not to call Bangladesh “favourites” even against the under-strength touring New Zealand team.”You can consider yourself favourites in T20s, but if it becomes overconfidence, it can be negative for you. The team that reads the conditions well and has the hunger to do well on the day usually comes out on top in T20s.”Having said that, they are a very disciplined side in their homework and execution level. We must remain focused and hungry, as we did against Australia. I would love to see the continuity.”But he was also quick to point out that the expectation from the home side is justified, especially after their 4-1 T20I series win against Australia earlier this month.”It is a very good opportunity for our team. We are eager to prove that we are good at home. I am hopeful that the boys will be up for it.”There will always be expectations especially when it has built up in our home conditions. We are very competitive and confidence at home. We use our condition well. Every opportunity for the team and individual must be valued. Rest will take care of itself.”

Acordo fechado!

Who will be the next PCB chairman? Decision after Imran Khan submits nominations

Imran Khan, the prime minister of Pakistan – and the PCB’s patron-in-chief – is set to make the decision that will lead to either Ramiz Raja taking over as the next board chairman or Ehsan Mani continuing for second, shorter term.Khan met his former team-mate Raja, now a prominent broadcaster, on Monday, having identified him as one probable candidate to take over from the incumbent Mani. Mani’s tenure is due to end on August 25, but he could also be given an extension, possibly for a year instead of the usual three years. In either case, it is not a direct appointment as such: Khan will nominate two names (in this case likely to be Mani and Raja) to the PCB’s board of governors, who will then elect the chairman.Former Pakistan captain Khan had initially reached out to Raja, also a former PCB chief executive, to give him names of potential candidates, in line with his apparent preference for an ex-cricketer to be at the helm. But, in the absence of other obvious candidate, he is believed to have told Raja to consider himself for the post.Related

  • Afghanistan-Pakistan ODI series postponed indefinitely

“I did meet with the PM and presented him with a roadmap for how Pakistan cricket can go forward,” Raja shared with ESPNcricinfo. “It was a cricket-centric discussion on the problems Pakistan cricket is facing and what possible steps can be taken to improve the overall performance. I am glad he called me up and heard me out. He is concerned about the state of cricket overall and is open to discussion.”Pakistan has been extremely inconsistent and, let’s be fair, that the ranking in each format reflects that Pakistan cannot make it into the final of tournaments. The only chance they have is to play the semi-final in T20 format while considering the ODI and Test format it’s hard for them to go past the pool stage. So I have updated him on things on the cricketing front. We had a productive meeting and it is now his call on how to proceed.”Mani met Khan earlier in the day, and though he is not keen on the idea of another three-year tenure, it is believed he wants to stay on potentially for another year in order to complete plans and projects. Lead among those would be to take the long-standing negotiations with PSL franchises on a new financial model for the league to a conclusion. The PSL’s commercial and broadcast rights cycle is also due for renewal and will need careful steering through, with the added complication of an arbitration process with the previous rights holders Blitz that the board is involved in. A number of PSL franchises, however, feel that continuity is essential for the advance of the league and they worry a change at the top will disrupt the proceedings. On the international front, Mani is thought to be keen to cement the return of cricket to Pakistan by bidding for multiple ICC events in the next tournament cycle, as sole hosts and co-hosts. Though the return of international cricket to Pakistan had begun under the previous administration, Mani and his CEO Wasim Khan have built on those gains with full international home seasons for the first time in a decade. One-and-a-half of the last two PSL seasons have been played in Pakistan (the half season this year was relocated to the UAE because of the Covid-19 pandemic).New Zealand and England are scheduled to tour later this year, for the first time in nearly 18 and 15 years respectively; early next year, as part of the same home season, Australia are due to visit for the first time in what will be 23 years.Though there is no indication on when a decision would be taken, Khan is expected to put forward his two nominations by August 25. After that, the board of governors will hold a vote to pick the chairman.

"Desperate" – Hoddle shares what he’s spotted from Tottenham coaching staff

Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle has shared what he spotted from manager Ange Postecoglou’s coaching staff in the dugout last night, as the Lilywhites scraped past Ferencvaros in the Europa League.

Ferencvaros 1-2 Tottenham – match report

On paper, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the Premier League side would win this one with ease, but it ended up being a hard-fought victory in Hungary.

"Exciting" Tottenham player could be out for nearly two months with injury

He may well miss a host of crucial games.

ByEmilio Galantini Oct 3, 2024

Postecoglou fielded a very young side on the night, with four players aged 19 or under named in Tottenham’s starting eleven. Damola Ajayi was promoted to first-team Tottenham training and the Europa League squad, among other new youngsters, but they ultimately didn’t get on the field.

The north Londoners went into the game minus Radu Dragusin (suspension), Destiny Udogie, Son Heung-min, Richarlison and Wilson Odobert, with Postecoglou selecting a host of teenagers in the impressive Mikey Moore, Will Lankshear, Lucas Bergvall and summer signing Archie Gray.

Spurs were given an early wake-up call when the home side had a goal narrowly ruled out for offside 15 minutes into the contest, but Postecoglou’s men swiftly responded by taking the lead just minutes later.

Timo Werner really should’ve made it 2-0 after the restart, missing a glorious chance after feeding off a brilliant low ball in from Moore.

Ferencvaros made Spurs sweat amid a hostile atmosphere the Groupama Arena, but there was no stopping the in-form Brennan Johnson, who made it five goals in his last five matches with an exceptional finish into the bottom corner on 85 minutes.

Tottenham's Brennan Johnson.

It was a nervy last few minutes when the home side grabbed a late goal back, but it was too little too late for them as Spurs sealed their second Europa League win of the campaign and extended their winning run.

Glenn Hoddle shares what he spotted from Tottenham staff against Ferencvaros

Commentating on the game for TNT Sports, pundit Hoddle shared something he spotted from the Tottenham dugout during the clash.

Indeed, Hoddle says the Spurs coaching staff were “desperate” for Lankshear to score last night, and the 19-year-old had a chance too. However, he couldn’t quite muscle his way past the Ferencvaros defence – with academy teammate Moore instead taking all the headlines for his excellent display.

“Lankshear’s having a fight with the defender, he’s very unlucky,” said Hoddle at 1-0 (via BBC Sport).

“All of the coaching staff desperate for the young man to score. Desperate defending.”

Tottenham signed the teenage forward for £2 million from Sheffield United in 2022, and he has since gone on to impress in the youth set-up – with chairman Daniel Levy and co handing Lankshear a new deal running until 2029.

The Englishman will have further opportunities to impress in the Europa League based off Thursday evening, and he must grab them with both hands.

He was anonymous: Arteta could now be forced to drop 5/10 Arsenal star

Last week Mikel Arteta would have been waking up with cold sweats, that’s if he was even able to sleep.

The Arsenal manager was given a number of dilemmas after his squad were seemingly dropping like flies in the build-up to a pivotal north London derby.

They knew about Declan Rice for two weeks after his red card against Brighton but there were late blows to the likes of Riccardo Calafiori and Martin Odegaard who were both injured on international duty with Italy and Norway respectively.

They were also missing new signing Mikel Merino with a shoulder problem and Oleksandr Zinchenko sat out with his own fitness issues.

That meant that Arsenal’s bench was extremely thin on the ground for their trip across north London with five of the players named among the substitutes being Hale Enders.

Ethan Nwaneri was the most notable and was joined by Maldini Kacurri and Ismeal Kabia who enjoyed their first senior call-ups. Ayden Heaven and Myles Lewis-Skelly who were both seen in pre-season were on the bench too.

So, although it was only Nwaneri who was seen on the field, this was a remarkably impressive win for the Gunners who ran away back to the Emirates with a 1-0 win courtesy of Gabriel’s bullet header in the second half.

He shrugged off Cristian Romero with absolute ease for his goal before leaping high and heading past a helpless Guglielmo Vicario in the Tottenham net.

The goal-scoring defender was also a monster at the back, making a whopping eight clearances, blocking two shots and winning two of his three ground duels.

It was a complete performance but compliments must also be handed to goalkeeper David Raya who is proving to be quite the signing, just over one year on from his initial loan move from Brentford.

Raya won 100% of his duels in the match – he hasn’t actually lost a duel yet this season – and made four saves inside the penalty box. Spurs couldn’t get past him, nor can many teams. The Spanish gloveman already has three clean sheets to show for his efforts in four matches.

However, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows from an Arsenal perspective

Arsenal's biggest underperformer against Spurs

Speaking at full-time, Arteta obviously sported a beaming smile but was he 100% happy with the performance of his side? No.

Talking to Sky Sports, he noted: “We had some great moments in open spaces where we should have done a lot more than we actually did.

“We weren’t the best with the ball today and we did a lot of simple things wrong. The sequence of passes you can do against them are very few because they jump and press every ball, they make it very difficult.”

Those difficult moments that the Spaniard talks about were perhaps as a result of not having Odegaard in the team.

The Norwegian has been the man who makes things tick in this Arsenal team for so long and when the club can’t play him, they do lack genuine creativity from a central area.

So, how did Arteta try to fix that on Sunday afternoon? He gave Leandro Trossard the playmaking keys.

Did he make up for Odegaard’s absence? In truth, the Belgian struggled in an unfamiliar role. Handed a 5/10 match rating by GOAL’s Charles Watts, the Arsenal reporter noted that Trossard ‘couldn’t really get into the game and took some risks when in possession.’

Indeed, there was one particular moment in the first half where he surrendered the ball far too easily in the middle of the park when the Gunners were in a promising position in Spurs’ half. He should have done much better to continue the attack.

That was one of nine times the former Brighton star gave away the ball during an indifferent performance where he left the pitch having had fewer touches than Raya’s 48.

Arsenal face Atalanta in the Champions League on Thursday and with Odegaard still a bit of a doubt, Arteta may have to stick with Trossard in an unfamiliar role.

That said, he does have other options. Kai Havertz could be moved back into more of a number 10 role while Nwaneri – who looked so composed when he came on in the derby – may well be handed his first senior start. The latter, in particular, is something the Arsenal boss must explore, with Trossard moving back to the bench.

O’Neil could revive Cunha by unleashing Wolves star who’s "got everything"

Wolverhampton Wanderers may be sitting bottom of the Premier League table, but a win over Brentford could be the catalyst the Old Gold need to push them away from the drop zone.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil

Gary O’Neil may come under some pressure should he fail to lead his side to all three points against the Bees, and he will need to see some improvements from players such as Matheus Cunha.

Matheus Cunha’s season in numbers for Wolves

Last season, Cunha was the club’s top scorer, netting 14 goals in all competitions, but so far during the current campaign, he has managed to find the back of the net on just two occasions in the top flight.

Goals

Despite his lack of goals, Cunha has been impressive for the club. Indeed, he has created two big chances in the top flight, averages 1.5 key passes per game and has succeeded with 1.7 dribbles per game, showcasing his qualities going forward.

The goals will come, that is certain, but might O’Neil unleash someone in the team who could potentially revive the Brazilian? Creating more chances for him during games in which he can add to his goal tally.

Matheus Cunha

Hwang Hee-Chan has only started three times this term under O’Neil, but could he be unleashed against Brentford this weekend?

Why Hwang Hee-Chan should start against Brentford

Like Cunha, Hwang was on fire for the Old Gold last term, netting 13 goals across the entire season, looking like a man reborn under the new regime.

The South Korea international also managed to succeed with 55% of his dribble attempts, create four big chances and averaged 1.6 shots per game, working well alongside Cunha when the pair were chosen together in the starting XI.

Unfortunately, they haven’t had many chances to recreate this magic during the current season, but if O’Neil can get them firing against Brentford, it could allow Wolves to secure three points.

The forward was hailed by Ian Wright a few years ago, who said: “He has got everything, he has got pace, skill, touch and awareness and he’s always driving to get into the box.”

While he may not have enjoyed the start to the season he would have liked, it is still early for him to start building momentum. The club have scored just six league goals all campaign, which clearly suggests O’Neil needs to unleash some firepower against the Bees.

In the Premier League last term, Hwang ranked in the top 9% for successful take-on percentage (52.2%) when compared to his positional peers, along with ranking in the top 5% for goals per shot on target (0.65) per 90, underlining how effective he was in the opponents half of the pitch.

While it is too early in the season to say that a defeat could be damaging this weekend, Wolves have to improve and get results sooner rather than later. If they don’t, it could be yet another relegation scrap.
