Development: Man Utd now considering making offer for "world class" 29 y/o

Manchester United could look to make an offer for a "world class" player in a hurry after INEOS held internal discussions over his signature last week, according to an intriguing new transfer claim.

Man Utd transfer news

The summer transfer window may be closed, but that doesn't mean the Red Devils aren't continuing to be linked with potential new signings, having brought in the likes of Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee earlier in the year.

Brighton captain Lewis Dunk has emerged as a surprise target for United in the January window, as they look to test the Seagulls' resolve, although opinion may be split about whether the 32-year-old is the right target to bring in, given his age.

Adrien Rabiot is also seen as an option, with the France international now a free agent after his summer exit from Juventus, should Erik ten Hag feel that immediate midfielder reinforcements are needed after Casemiro's disastrous performance against Liverpool in the Premier League last weekend. Man Utd chiefs are said to have held internal discussions last week about whether to make a move.

In terms of the managerial situation at Old Trafford, Ten Hag's job looks to be safe for the time being, but pressure is mounting on him by the week. Former Germany boss Joachim Low has been mentioned as a potential successor to the Dutchman.

Man Utd could soon table offer for "world class" star

According to a new update from Le Figaro [via Sport Witness], Manchester United are considering tabling an offer for Rabiot, so it seems things have developed since the internal talks last week. Newcastle United are also eyeing a bid for the 29-year-old, but European giants Barcelona appear to be out of the race due to their financial issues holding them back, and both English clubs have now been told they need to hurry.

United supporters would surely jump at the chance to have Rabiot in their ranks, not least because of Casemiro's woes, gifting Liverpool two goals in their aforementioned 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford last Sunday. The Frenchman is still at peak age, and should remain that way for the foreseeable future, and the Red Devils have the funds to offer him big wages, which he is likely to demand after earning £162,000 per week at Juve.

A silky footballer who can shine in a deep role or as a box-to-box figure, Rabiot would strengthen Ten Hag's options in the middle of the park significantly, also helping Ugarte to ease into his new surroundings and not have too much pressure on his young shoulders.

Former Juve great David Trezeguet has described the midfielder as a "world class" player, which is big praise, while ex-France colleague Hugo Lloris once said of him: "Technically he's a very elegant player and he really can help us go far."

Some may point to the fact that Rabiot turns 30 next year and not see him as a long-term acquisition, but with Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo exciting young options, he could be the ideal foil for them, also providing more legs than the increasingly problematic Casemiro.

Newcastle make first approach to sign "magical" new £15m star for Howe

Attempting to make up for lost time following a disastrous summer transfer window, Newcastle United have reportedly already made contact to sign one 2025 target.

Newcastle transfer news

In Newcastle's ideal world, Eddie Howe would currently have Marc Guehi and an upgrade on Miguel Almiron at his disposal. Not only did the Magpies fail in their summer-long pursuit of the Crystal Palace defender, however, but they also saw their late bid to sign Anthony Elanga rejected by Nottingham Forest – summing their window up in two swift rejections.

New sporting director Paul Mitchell recently spoke about the club's failure on the transfer front and particularly their pursuit of Guehi, telling the Telegraph's Luke Edwards, as relayed by The Athletic: “Eddie was very clear and it’s not up to me after seven weeks to say, ‘We’ll do this and that’, because I’m in a supporting role. Were there options? Of course there were, as that’s the responsibility of the department and Newcastle.

“That’s why we ended up where we did. It was that player or he felt he was comfortable with the quality we have. You can be on multiple deals at any one time, the focus doesn’t have to be that narrow. We probably were too narrow but, coming in mid-July, it’s not my strategy to control, it’s my strategy to support. But there was no player that he (Howe) wasn’t part of deciding and saying, ‘That’s the guy I want’.”

ByTom Cunningham Sep 5, 2024

Mitchell, of course, will now want to put this summer behind him alongside the rest of those at St James' Park and could instantly get the fans back onside with a strong start in 2025.

According to reports in Argentina via Sport Witness, Newcastle have already made contact about a deal to sign Kevin Zenon from Boca Juniors, who reportedly value their winger at $20m (£15m) in 2025.

The Magpies are yet to push on following that approach, but now know the conditions of the deal should they want to land Zenon's signature in either the January transfer window or next summer.

"Magical" Zenon would unleash Isak's best form

Although he can be forgiven for a slow start after such an impressive campaign last time out, Alexander Isak will be well aware of just how much Newcastle will need him to rediscover his form after the international break, having scored once in the opening three Premier League games due largely to a lack of service.

In need of a creator, Zenon would offer the Swede exactly that, albeit only as soon as the January window, with the likes of Ben Mattinson full of praise for the 23-year-old, who can play anywhere down the left flank. The analyst went as far as describing his left-foot as "magical" back in July.

An exciting winger, Zenon may well be one to watch when the winter window swings open as Newcastle look to make up for their previous failure.

Forget Antonio: Lopetegui must unleash "underrated" West Ham man in rejig

West Ham United have struggled to implement Julen Lopetegui’s more possession-based system since his arrival, only winning one of their opening four games in the Premier League.

One man who has started well is new signing, Max Kilman, who joined from Wolves this summer for a fee of around £40m. The defender has played all five of West Ham’s fixtures so far, totalling 450 minutes, and providing one assist already.

Max Kilman West Ham graphic

However, the Hammers still seem to have a strike department issue, with Michail Antonio struggling for form, and Niclas Füllkrug struggling for fitness, which could be enough reason for a creative solution from Lopetegui ahead of tomorrow’s meeting with Chelsea.

Antonio's start to the season

Antonio was taken off at half-time against Fulham in the Hammers’ stalemate last time out, as the striker has now made it four games on the trot without a goal in the Premier League. Despite playing 251 minutes, and taking six shots, the Jamaican has yet to even find a shot on target.

Last season, the 34-year-old made 32 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring seven goals, providing two assists, and totalling 2,032 minutes. The last season he scored 10+ in the league being the 2021/22 campaign.

Michail Antonio for West Ham

Against Fulham, Lopetegui made the change to bring Antonio off, putting Jarrod Bowen upfront, and Mohammed Kudus over to the right, in order to introduce new signing, Crysencio Summerville, on the left. Bowen played as a striker multiple times last season, in the absence of Antonio.

West Ham's centre-forward solution

Labeled as “underrated” last season by Tony Cascarino, Bowen showed his ability to score and be prolific in front of goal, scoring 20 goals in 44 appearances.

22 of these appearances came as a centre-forward for the Hammers, with Antonio spending spells on the sideline, and Kudus playing on the right.

Despite being more natural coming off the right wing, Bowen can definitely do a job upfront, as he has the required intelligence and movement to create chances for himself, and link play effectively with his teammates.

Bowen can provide a higher level of accuracy in and around the box, being more efficient with his touches, and providing a higher volume of shots. His 2.61 shots per 90, with 1.10 on target, whilst generating 0.35 xG per 90, is all proof of this.

Whilst Antonio works hard, and wins more aerial duels than Bowen, the rest is clear to see, Bowen excels in most other metrics ahead of Antonio, and this change would allow the Hammers to start another pacey wide option in the team, such as Summerville, in order to hit Chelsea in transition, and cause them problems.

West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen

If Fullkrug remains out through injury, Bowen through the middle could be their best option, playing with a slightly more conservative gameplan, looking to hit Chelsea on the counter, and be clinical with the chances they create.

Florentino Pérez makes £19.5m-a-year Man City star Real Madrid’s top target

Manchester City are in danger of losing several players to Real Madrid if Pep Guardiola leaves in the summer of 2025, according to a fresh transfer update from Spain.

Guardiola may leave Man City next year

City once again clinched Premier League glory last season, making it four league titles on the spin, and the early indications this time around suggest that Guardiola's men are again very much the team to beat.

It could be that this is their legendary manager's final season at the Etihad, however, with the Spaniard failing to rule out the idea of moving on in 2025. He may feel that he has taken his team as far as he can, as was the case with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool earlier this year, having been in charge since 2016.

Should Guardiola move on, he will leave City as one of the most influential figures in the club's history, not only nurturing many of the best players ever to appear in the blue shirt but also winning countless trophies, not least the holy grail of the Champions League in 2023.

The supporters will hope that the former Barcelona hero still has many years left in him in charge, but at this point, it would arguably be a surprise if he was still manager this time next year given the silence around a new contract. Now, it looks as though a hugely important City player could now leave alongside him next year.

Man City could lose another "huge" star in 2025

According to a report from Spain, Manchester City could lose Erling Haaland to Real Madrid at the end of this season, with the reigning Champions League winners keen on snapping him up and capable of paying his current £19.5m-a-year salary.

The update states that Florentino Pérez is personally a massive fan of the player, and has made him one of their most coveted targets for next summer. It is also claimed that Haaland "has a clause in his contract that would allow him to leave the Premier League at a reasonable price," while the uncertainty surrounding Guardiola and the 115 charges is also thought to be playing its part.

This comes after Madrid have already been lurking around midfielder and potential Ballon d'Or winner Rodri, with City desperately trying to extend the Spain international's contract to fend off that interest.

Manchester City strikr Erling Haaland

The idea of City losing Pep, Haaland and Rodri – all at the peak of their powers – will terrify City supporters, with the 24-year-old in particular a simply unbelievable talent whose goalscoring statistics are off the chart. Incredibly, he already has seven league goals in three games this season, and 97 in 102 appearances overall.

Guardiola treasures the Norwegian, describing him as "huge", and he feels like the difference-maker in this season's Premier League title race, with his ability to find the net at a freakish rate potentially giving the Cityzens the edge over Arsenal and Liverpool.

The lure of Madrid is great, however, especially with Kylian Mbappe now joining the likes of Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham there, so it is easy to see Haaland's head still being turned by a move to arguably the biggest club in the world.

Keeping him on beyond this season has to be one of City's biggest aims, though, during which time they will hope he continues to smash record after record.

Batters must come to the party for Zimbabwe to stay alive

Bangladesh look the better side, but if Zimbabwe’s batters come good, they could well script a bounceback

Big pictureFor two successive games now – in the one-off Test and the first ODI – Zimbabwe have had a great start with the ball but have failed to build on the advantage, allowing Bangladesh to rebuild after early wickets. On both occasions, Zimbabwe finished on the wrong side of the result. As they face Bangladesh in the second ODI on Sunday, the batters must add to the work of the bowlers, before the series goes away from them.In the first ODI, Blessing Muzarabani led the pace attack with a fine new-ball display. He removed both Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan and, at one stage, Bangladesh were pinned at 76 for 4. But Liton Das rescued the team by scoring a century before Shakib, on his way to clinching the top spot among Bangladesh’s ODI wicket-takers, helped Bangladesh post a resounding win with a five-for.Related

But, as Das pointed out after the game – as was evident in the Test as well – Zimbabwe might not have the bowling depth to sustain the pressure. Their spinners Ryan Burl and Wesley Madhevere conceded 68 runs in their 11 overs in the last game, and that let the momentum slip. The lack of wicket-taking options has hurt the team in the middle overs very often. With the bat, too, Zimbabwe let slip a position of strength. Despite two early wickets, Brendan Taylor and Dion Myers had revived the innings before Regis Chakabva counter-attacked. He struck four fours and two sixes in his 51-ball 54, but while he was going after the bowling, the rest of the batting caved in. Having been bowled out for a paltry 121 in 28.5 overs in the opening game, Taylor would expect his batters to put on a better show in the second if Zimbabwe are to stay alive in the three-match series.Form guideZimbabwe LWLLL (last five completed ODIs)

Liton Das paced his innings in the first ODI superbly. Das is usually more flamboyant and goes for runs from the word go, but he also knows his game well enough now, and doesn’t hesitate to target the bowlers even when the chips are down.Team newsDas hurt his wrist during the first ODI. The weather is expected to be dry.Stats and trivia Bangladesh’s 155-run victory in the first ODI was their biggest by runs in an away ODI. Their previous best was a 137-run win over Sri Lanka in the 2018 Asia Cup. In ten ODIs against Zimbabwe, Das has scored 524 runs at an average of 58.22 and a strike rate of 102.34. He has three hundreds and a fifty against them.Quotes”It is easy to talk about fifties or hundreds, but I thought Afif [Hossain] and [Mehidy Hasan] Miraz made critical contributions with bat. We needed those runs after Riyad bhai [Mahmudullah] got out. Those two made sure we got 276.”

Arteta handed possible Odegaard injury boost after initial Arsenal fears

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been handed a potential Martin Odegaard injury boost after initial fears over his timeline, and there is a prospect of him returning earlier than expected.

Odegaard suffers "significant" ankle injury at Arsenal

While Arteta coped brilliantly without Arsenal’s captain in their 1-0 North London Derby win away to Spurs last weekend, Odegaard was a sore creative miss during the Gunners’ 0-0 draw away to Atalanta in the Champions League on Thursday evening.

In their bid to beat Man City and Pep Guardiola to the Premier League title this season, all the while ending their 21-year-wait for a league crown, Arteta will be privately hoping that their chief creator can return to action as soon as possible.

Odegaard injured his ankle on international duty with Norway, and was forced off with the issue during their 2-1 UEFA Nations League win over Austria. Since then, Arteta has confirmed that the 25-year-old suffered “significant” ankle ligament damage and could be out for a while.

“The scan showed some damage around the ligaments in the ankle so we are going to miss him,” said Arteta in an Odegaard injury update before Atalanta.

“It’s something quite significant so we are going to lose him for a while. Hopefully not months. He’s our captain, he’s been one of the biggest and best players in our team. Our identity is very linked to how he plays and behaves. It’s a big test for the team to see how able we are to show a different face.”

With Mikel Merino sidelined after a shoulder fracture, Odegaard’s absence prompted Arteta to drop Kai Havertz back into midfield against Atalanta – as opposed to his usual makeshift centre-forward role where he has been very effective.

Gabriel Jesus started up top in Bergamo, with Arsenal struggling to match their usual attacking prowess. Some reports have even claimed that Odegaard could be out till Christmas, but these initial fears have been somewhat put to bed by GiveMeSport.

Martin Odegaard could return for Arsenal in six weeks

As per their information, Arsenal are hopeful that Odegaard could return within six weeks, and potentially for their all-important clash against Liverpool on October 27.

Indeed, it is believed that Arteta’s side are optimistic over their midfielder returning late next month or early November, but there is also caution, as Arsenal are fully aware Odegaard may take even longer to get back to full fitness.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard

In the meantime, Arsenal are gearing up for a crucial encounter against Man City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, and it will be very interesting to see how Arteta sets up his side in one of their most testing matches of the season.

The £240,000-per-week star bagged eight goals and 10 assists last campaign, helping to push City all the way to the final day as Arsenal finished 23/24 with 89 points.
