    WHAT HAPPENED?

Carsley was appointed as the England interim boss in July after Gareth Southgate stepped down from his post as head coach following the Three Lions' Euro 2024 final loss to Spain in Berlin. Initially the England Under-21 manager, he will now oversee the senior side's last two Nations League group-stage clashes against Greece and the Republic of Ireland before newly appointed boss Tuchel takes over the side on January 1. However, Carsley has revealed that he did not know that Tuchel would be the one to take over from him until the FA's announcement in October, despite the German having signed his contract much earlier.

  • WHAT CARSLEY SAID

When asked by the media whether he knew about Tuchel having been signed before his side's 2-1 loss to Greece on October 10, Carsley said: "No. I can’t remember to be honest.

"My focus was massively on the games, on the camp. In terms of the timeline, it has been spoken about within the press conference that they [the FA] did. In terms of my position in that I’m really comfortable with the way that it was handled. I didn’t feel undermined or anything like that."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

During the press conference, Carsley was also asked if he had been in extended contact with Tuchel ahead of the Nations League clashes. He replied: "No. I think with the press conference they [the FA] had, it was quite clear in terms of the starting date.

"He is fully respectful that I am in charge at the moment. That is the priority. I do not feel hard done by or shunned. If anything I look forward to hopefully create a situation where we can hand over a healthy squad of players to the new coach and his squad."

Carsley did, however, concede he had texted Tuchel to congratulate him on landing the permanent job.

Marcus Stoinis ready to bowl again, Haris Rauf happy to return to the site of hat-trick

Marcus Stoinis is ready to bowl again for the Melbourne Stars having not delivered a ball in the BBL so far this season coming off a side strain.Stoinis injured his side while bowling for Australia in the first ODI against India on November 27.He missed the rest of the ODI series and played just one game in the following T20I series as a specialist batsman while still injured, as Australia were severely undermanned due to the loss of both Aaron Finch and David Warner.Stoinis has played every game of the BBL so far but only as a batsman due to his side issue, but he is set to be available to bowl if called upon by captain Glenn Maxwell when the Stars host the Adelaide Strikers at the MCG on Friday night.”My body is good,” Stoinis said. “I’m hopeful to be bowling this game. I’m actually fit. I just haven’t been able to bowl at training. We’ve been travelling quite a lot and it’s sometimes hard to get the facilities to bowl. Hopefully, it’s this game, in fact, it will be.”Related

Stoinis had been given the all-clear to bowl 10 days ago but the strict nature of the BBL hubs has made it difficult for him to gain access to nets in order to get his bowling loads up.The BBL teams and players have not had the freedom to use practice nets and facilities like they would in a normal season due to the Covid-19 restrictions. Stoinis had to get clearance to book a net for bowling session on the Gold Coast the day after the Stars’ loss to the Heat on January 7. The team then had to travel to Adelaide and play on January 11.The inability to get several solid bowling sessions in over that period has meant he could not return to bowl in a game until now.”I have bowled a couple times but that’s what holding me back,” Stoinis said. “I’ve been fit for a week or 10 days but actually having the chance to bowl in the nets hasn’t been an option at the moment. We’ve had that the last couple of days. I’ll have a bowl today, and then everything going well I’m pretty sure I’ll play as a bowler next game.”Stoinis also suffered side strains during the 2019 World Cup but he is confident the recurrence is nothing more than coincidental.”It’s different parts of the side,” Stoinis said. “I’ve done both [sides] now. It’s quite a typical bowling injury, I guess.”Perth Scorchers allrounder Mitchell Marsh also suffered a side strain during the Scorchers win over Hobart Hurricanes on Tuesday and is now unable to bowl for the remainder of the tournament.Haris Rauf has fond memories of the MCG•Getty Images

The Stars are excited to return to Melbourne having played their first nine games of the BBL season on the road.No one is more thrilled about the Stars’ return to the MCG than Pakistan quick Haris Rauf after he lit up the ‘G with a spectacular hat-trick in the Stars’ win over the Sydney Thunder win over Sydney Thunder last season.”I’m so excited to play at the MCG,” Rauf said. “There’s good memories at the MCG, the best game in my life [was when I took] the hat-trick. I [will] remember that, always.”Rauf has had a tough start on his return to the BBL this season after arriving from New Zealand where he toured with the Pakistan side. But he is grateful for the opportunity to come back to BBL, which played such a big part in his propulsion to the international stage.”I’m [still] learning,” Rauf said. “Last year was a good experience in the Big Bash League. After the Big Bash , I had success playing for [my] country.”

£40,000-p/w England international ready to leave Crystal Palace this summer

One Crystal Palace player is ready to pack his bags and leave south London this summer after telling the club of his desire to leave, it has been reported.

Crystal Palace facing interest in stars

It has been an anxious summer for Crystal Palace and Oliver Glasner following their strong end to the 2023-24 Premier League season, with speculation surrounding several of their stars ahead of the new campaign.

Talismanic figure Michael Olise has already left, joining Bayern Munich in a deal worth £60m after turning down the chance to join Chelsea for the second summer in a row. But interest remains in more of Palace's talents, with Eberechi Eze having been linked with Manchester City, Tottenham and Arsenal amid claims that £60m could be enough to secure his signature.

Eberechi Eze celebrates for Crystal Palace

Meanwhile, Marc Guehi is subject of interest from Newcastle United, who have opened negotiations over signing the Palace skipper this summer, while Liverpool are also thought to have joined the race for the EURO 2024 standout's signature.

Down to the final two years of his contract at Selhurst Park, Palace would be willing to reluctantly cash in on him this summer to avoid losing him for free in the years to come, but are set to demand around £60m to do so.

He's Haaland-esque: Crystal Palace can land dream £59m Mateta replacement

Crystal Palace eye interesting Mateta replacement

ByConnor Holden Aug 4, 2024

Their own business has been reasonable, with Daichi Kamada arriving on a free transfer and Real Betis defender Chadi Riad signed for £10m. They have also signed former Watford winger Ismaila Sarr to fill the void left by OIise and were either Guehi or Eze to leave they could likely move to replace them.

But now, they may have to replace another squad player.

England man wants to leave Crystal Palace

That comes as England international Sam Johnstone has reportedly told the club that he wants to leave in search of first-team football.

The shot-stopper was set to be part of England's squad for EURO 2024 only for a shoulder injury to keep him sidelined for the tournament, meaning that he couldn't add to his four caps for the Three Lions.

The 31-year-old signed for Crystal Palace on a free transfer in 2022, putting pen to paper on a five-year deal worth £40,000-a-week. However, he made just nine appearances in his first campaign and a further 20 in the 2023/24 season, which saw him briefly dropped in favour of Dean Henderson before getting injured.

When he did play, he put in some strong performances, with Roy Hodgson singling him out for praise after one outing against Leeds United in the 2022-23 campaign.

“Sam deserves an awful lot of credit, especially having had to battle through injuries, watching Vicente Guaita play in front of him,” he said. “This was a great opportunity to show what a good quality goalkeeper he is — and he took that. We know he’s good, we see him in training and know his character. Today, he produced the saves you want your goalkeeper to produce.”

But HITC report that the 31-year-old is looking to leave the club after making it "clear" to Palace that "he does not want to spend the season on the bench in South London".

He is thought to be in demand too, with Nottingham Forest among those chasing his signature. No price is mentioned in the report, but any fee would see Palace profit on the goalkeeper were he to move on, though they would have to find a replacement for the England man who was four senior caps for the Three Lions.

Arteta sees £51,000-a-week player as potential bargain signing for Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta sees a £51,000-per-week star as a potential bargain signing for the north Londoners, and one who represents a solid transfer opportunity.

Sporting director Edu Gaspar is said to be targeting a quartet of key new additions for Arteta before deadline day on August 30, coming in the form of a new goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and forward (Simon Collings).

Arsenal are still attempting to get a deal for Riccardo Calafiori over the line after agreeing personal terms on a five-year contract with the Italy international centre-back, as talks remain ongoing over the final fee and payment structure.

A possible exit for England's Aaron Ramsdale, which has been highly mooted by sections of the media, has also prompted the Gunners to look at alternative back-up options for current number one David Raya – who joined Arsenal permanently in a £27 million deal from Brentford.

Arsenal have made bids for Wolves keeper Daniel Bentley, coming 15 years after he left the academy, but Edu's opening offers for the 30-year-old are believed to have fallen well short of their valuation.

Young England Under-20 international keeper Tommy Setford has joined Arsenal from Ajax, but he could be seen as one for the future, rather than an immediate successor to Ramsdale. There is also the matter of a new midfielder to come in and bolster Arteta's options. The Spaniard perhaps requires another body to complement midfielders Declan Rice and Jorginho, especially as uncertainty surrounds the future of Thomas Partey.

Partey is reportedly prepared to leave Arsenal and embark on a fresh challenge, after making just 14 Premier League appearances last season, with his contract also set to expire in under 12 months. The Ghanaian is attracting rumoured interest from Saudi Arabia as a potentially lucrative destination for him, and Arsenal have considered a few would-be heirs to Partey already.

Arsenal held talks with Amadou Onana before he ultimately ended up heading to Aston Villa, according to former Everton CEO Keith Wyness, and Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi has admirers at the Emirates Stadium as well.

However, the midfield name being repeatedly mentioned in tandem with Arsenal lately is Zubimendi's teammate, Mikel Merino.

Arteta views Merino as a potential bargain signing for Arsenal

The Spain international impressed on his country's run to Euro 2024 glory, scoring the winner against hosts Germany in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

His £51,000-per-week contract is also set to expire next year as things stand, making him an affordable option at around £25 million. That is according to GiveMeSport, who also state that Arteta sees Merino as a "reasonable value" potential Arsenal signing due to his price tag.

The 28-year-old not only starred for Spain but also impressed at club level last term over his 45 appearances in all competitions for Sociedad.

Gyokeres has been in prolific goalscoring form this season for club and country and took his tally to 32 in 24 games after scoring four times in a 6-0 win against Azerbaijan on Tuesday. The 26-year-old's goalscoring exploits have already led to speculation he could leave Sporting, with a host of clubs including Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Arsenal already linked with the Swedish hotshot.

Football fan @PauloP060802 made a huge claim about the Swede in a post on X: "Gyokeres is better than Haaland and I’ll stand with that forever."

And another comparison was made by @MrUnited25 who wrote: "Viktor Gyokeres already surpassed Zlatan Ibrahimovich career for Sweden."

Manchester United fan @Chima_SZN was also getting excited, posting: "Wait, Gyokeres has 30 goals already this season? I’m not even sure my entire club has 30 goals in all comps this season."

And @OgwChuks added: "Gyokeres’ stats don’t feel normal again since messi and cr7 left the big leagues, if this was 2016 we wouldn’t bat an eye."

Finally, another United fan, @Dogorizee, joked: "Manchester united is calling, pick up the call Gyokeres."

Ornstein: Southampton make £15m bid to sign new player and have had reply

Southampton have now made a £15m offer for an "unbelievable" player, according to a fresh update from reliable journalist David Ornstein, and a reply has already been received.

Southampton transfer news

The Saints are edging closer to their return to Premier League action, having basked in the glory of their Championship playoff final win over Leeds United all summer long. New signings were paramount as soon as the final whistle blew at Wembley back in May, however, and it has already been a positive transfer window.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Flynn Downes were two influential loanees for Southampton last season, playing a big role in their promotion, and they have now sealed permanent switches to St Mary's, coming in from Manchester City and West Ham respectively. Ben Brereton Diaz has also come in from Villarreal, which could be a strong signing, while highly-rated centre-back Ronnie Edwards has joined from Peterborough United, among others.

It would be a surprise if Southampton were done there, though, and young Norwich City forward Abu Kamara is reportedly the subject of an incoming formal bid from the south coast club.

Borussia Dortmund striker Youssoufa Moukoko is also a transfer target for the Saints, with Jude Bellingham once saying of him: "I think he's a really good talent, really promising talent. I think if you meet the boy as well, an excellent boy – very humble, he's got his feet firmly on the ground, which is the most important thing for a young player."

Southampton make £15m bid for "unbelievable" ace

According to the reliable Ornstein on X, Southampton have seen a £15m bid for Liverpool's Fabio Carvalho rejected, with a higher offer required to prise him away from Anfield on a permanent deal.

Carvalho has struggled to set the world alight at Liverpool since arriving from Fulham in the summer of 2022, not kicking on in the same way Harvey Elliot has after also coming in from Craven Cottage.

That's not to say that he couldn't be a fantastic signing for Southampton, however, proving to be capable of shining in attacking midfield and out wide. Jurgen Klopp has also waxed lyrical over him in the past, saying of him: "Fabio, for the situation in which he is now, in training on an absolute super level and not being involved, how he deals with it, I have to say, that’s kind of a role model. Not that he is happy with the situation, but he never gives up. It’s unbelievable."

Southampton ready formal bid to sign "excellent" England U-20 international

The Saints are still on the lookout for new signings.

ByTom Coates Aug 1, 2024

It is easy to forget that Carvalho is still only 21 years of age, so he has so much more improving to do, and he could thrive as more of a regular for Southampton, giving Russell Martin options in various positions, strengthening his squad depth in the process.

Chris Gayle, Fidel Edwards recalled to West Indies' T20I squad

Veterans return to the fray for three-match home series against Sri Lanka

Nagraj Gollapudi26-Feb-2021Chris Gayle has been recalled to play for West Indies for first time in two years, while senior fast bowler Fidel Edwards is back in the national squad after a nine-year hiatus. Both Gayle, who is 41 years old and Edwards, who turned 39 this month, have been named in West Indies’ squad for the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, which will be played between March 3-7 at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua, which will be making its international debut.Gayle arrived in Antigua this week, having played two matches for Quetta Gladiators in this year’s PSL. He last played for West Indies in their home series against India in the wake of the 2019 World Cup, which the former West Indies captain had at one stage said would be his final international appearances. However, during his appearances at the 2020 BPL, Gayle playfully hinted he could even play until 45. The fact that he was serious can be gauged from his performances at the 2020 IPL, in which he made a belated entry in the second half of the tournament but helped Kings XI Punjab string together five successive wins with his measured aggression in the top order.ESPNcricinfo LtdGayle was duly included in West Indies’ T20I provisional squad, and on return from the PSL, passed his fitness test to make the final 14. “Chris Gayle has performed very well in recent tournaments and the selection panel thinks that he can still add great value to our team,” Roger Harper, CWI’s lead selector, said in a media release. As for Edwards, Harper stated that his recall was to “give the bowling the potent firepower needed”. Edwards, who played 55 Tests for West Indies, moved to Hampshire in 2015 on a Kolpak deal. However, following the UK’s recent departure from the European Union, Edwards expressed his desire to make an international comeback. Accordingly Edwards spoke to captain Kieron Pollard and head coach Phil Simmons expressing his desire for a recall.Another notable inclusion in the squad is 21-year-old Guyana offspinner Kevin Sinclair, who has received a maiden call-up to both the T20I and ODI squads. The 50-over matches are scheduled to be played between March 10-14 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.Sinclair and Hosein received their call-ups following impressive performances in domestic cricket in the last two years. “Akeal Hosein performed very well in Bangladesh [ODI Series] and had excellent stats in the CPL so this is an opportunity to see how he equips himself in this format,” read the release.”Kevin Sinclair grabbed our attention in the Super50 Cup back in 2019 and has been consistently economical in the last CPL and the current CG Insurance Super50. He will provide an off-spinning option for the team.”Also featuring for the first time in the 14-man T20I squad is left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein, who played in the ODI series recently in Bangladesh.Related

West Indies Test captain Jason Holder has also been recalled for the white-ball segment of the Sri Lanka tour after his impactful performances for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2020 IPL, where he played as a replacement player before being retained by the franchise for this season. In a media released issued on Friday by Cricket West Indies, Harper said Holder, who had missed the home series against Ireland last year, as well as the white-ball tours of Sri Lanka and New Zealand, had been brought back to “add depth” to the squad.ESPNcricinfo LtdAndre Russell “recovering” from Covid-19Holder’s presence will offset the absence of Andre Russell, whom CWI revealed was “still recovering” from Covid-19.In a media release issued alongside the white-ball squads, CWI said Russell was not considered for selection on the advice of its medical panel.CWI said Russell had “contracted” the coronavirus “earlier” in February. “Despite testing negative over a week ago [Russell] was ruled out of the T20Is by the CWI Medical Panel whilst he completes his “return to play” protocols,” the statement read.Fitness has been a key consideration for Simmons and Pollard, as West Indies prepare to defend the T20 World Cup that they won in India when the tournament was last held in 2016. According to the media release, the fast bowling pair of Sheldon Cottrell and Oshane Thomas, as well as key batsman Shimron Hetmyer, and all-rounder Roston Chase have all failed to reach the minimum fitness standard in time for selection consideration.

Ange personally targeting £60m forward as Tottenham open talks with him

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is personally targeting a £60 million forward, and it is believed the Lilywhites have opened talks with him.

Spurs expected to sign second attacker after Timo Werner

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy re-negotiated Timo Werner's loan deal to extend his stay until next summer, with the new arrangement also including a cheaper option to buy set at around £8.5 million.

Tottenham favourites to sign £150k-p/w forward over Arsenal and Liverpool

The north Londoners are out in front as things stand.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 30, 2024

The German's two goals and three assists in the Premier League helped Postecoglou's side to Europa League qualification, with his searing pace and positional awareness proving a real asset at times.

However, there are concerns over his overall finishing ability, while uncertainty surrounds the long-term futures of both Son Heung-min and Richarlison – who were Tottenham's two top scorers in all competitions last season.

Son's contract expires next summer as things stand, while Richarlison could still be sold by Tottenham. The Brazilian is thought to be attracting interest from Saudi Arabia, with technical director Johan Lange and the wider recruitment team open to selling for the right offer (HITC).

Tottenham will also need a replacement for winger Bryan Gil, who has sealed a season-long loan move to Girona, and the La Liga side could sign him permanently for around £12.6 million due to the release clause in his new contract.

Both Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze and Wolves winger Pedro Neto are on Spurs' list of attacking targets, and that has been confirmed by reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.

"There is appreciation from Spurs for Eberechi Eze of Crystal Palace – and also with all of the other options we always mention here like Pedro Neto, this is absolutely confirmed," said Romano on Playback (via GiveMeSport).

"So Tottenham like Eze and like Pedro Neto, and they have decided how much they want to spend in that position. So there is internal conversation, but they will bring in one more player in that position for sure – one more offensive player."

Postecoglou targeting Neto as Tottenham hold talks with him

Football Transfers have shared an update on their pursuit of Neto in particular, coming as discussions over a move for Eze stall.

They claim Postecoglou is personally targeting Neto as Tottenham hold talks with him over personal terms. The Portugal international is said to feature prominently in the Spurs head coach's plans, coming after he bagged 11 assists and three goals in all competitions last season.

Pedro Neto for Wolves

He won't come cheap, though, as reports suggest Wolves want around £60 million to let him go. There is also the matter of his concerning injury record, with Neto missing a combined 112 games through fitness issues since joining from Lazio (Transfermarkt).

The 24-year-old was absent for extended periods on multiple occasions due to hamstring problems last season, so Spurs will have to consider this very carefully.
