Germany v Scotland: Clarke must drop 4/10 man after Finland display

Scotland will step into a baptism of fire this evening in Munich. The 2024 European Championships finally kick-off after what feels like months of buildup, as Germany hosts the event for the first time (West Germany were the hosts in 1988, three years before reunification).

Steve Clarke’s men will need to be at their best to have any chance of securing a positive result against the Germans. 2024 marks 26 years since Scotland opened the 1998 World Cup with a tie against holders Brazil.

Steve Clarke for Scotland.

Over a quarter of a century later, the Scots face a host nation who will be desperate to prove their worth.

Scotland’s preparation hasn’t exactly been smooth, with a mixture of injuries and poor results tempering expectations among the Tartan army.

How Scotland have prepared for the 2024 European Championship

The country faced two friendlies leading into the tournament, taking on Gibraltar in Portugal before heading back to Glasgow to welcome a Finnish side who failed to qualify in their final match before travelling to Germany.

A 2-0 win over the former may have been a victory, but it was hardly convincing. This was followed by a 2-2 draw over Finland, a game which saw Scotland stroll into a two-goal lead before being pegged back by two late goals.

These warm-up games were meant to give Clarke plenty of opportunity to give some fringe players a run out while also working out his strongest XI to play Germany.

Injuries to the likes of Nathan Patterson, Aaron Hickey and Lewis Ferguson in the final few weeks of the season were big blows, while Lyndon Dykes suffered an injury in training last week which ruled him out of the competition.

These setbacks leave a few gaps to be plugged in the squad, and it looked as though Lawrence Shankland took his chance well against the Finns, scoring a delightful header in the second half.

It was the defence that wasn’t at the races, however, something which will need to change if Clarke and his men aim to prevent Germany from running riot this evening.

Grant Hanley didn’t enjoy his finest game in a Scotland jersey. Might he be dropped for the opening fixture in Munich?

Grant Hanley’s game in numbers vs Finland

The experienced defender operated in the middle of a back three. Kieran Tierney was to his left, while Jack Hendry was to the right.

Hanley was on the pitch for 79 minutes, yet failed to really deliver a display which proved to Clarke that he should start against Germany.

Indeed, the 32-year-old lost possession four times, won just two of his five contested duels and was dribbled past on one occasion. He also failed to make a tackle or interception during his time on the pitch, along with delivering just one long pass.

Hanley did manage to take more touches than influential midfielder John McGinn during the match – 73 vs 63 – showing how comfortable he was on the ball, while his 94% pass success rate was impressive, yet Clarke may go for another option at the heart of his defence, especially to counteract the threat posed by the likes of Kai Havertz, Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala.

Hanley received a match rating of just 4/10 from Lewis Anderson of the Edinburgh News, stating that the defender delivered a ‘shaky performance’ before he was subbed with just ten minutes remaining.

The question is, who will Clarke bring in to replace the Norwich City centre-back tonight?

The players who can replace Grant Hanley vs Germany

The long-serving manager certainly has a few options that he could turn to who can replace Hanley and start alongside Tierney and Hendry against the Germans.

Scott McKenna was the player who replaced Hanley against Finland, playing around ten minutes at Hampden. He didn’t really get much time to showcase his credentials, however, taking only seven touches while completing just six passes before the full-time whistle.

Scotland defender Scott McKenna in action.

The former Aberdeen gem spent the second half of the 2023/24 season on loan at FC Copenhagen, making a total of 13 appearances for the Danish outfit.

McKenna’s last four starts for Scotland have seen the nation concede 11 goals, drawing two and losing two of those four games, which may come into Clarke’s thinking.

Ryan Porteous is perhaps the main contender for a slot at the heart of the defence for their opening match this evening, especially with how well he has settled in at international level since making his debut against Ukraine in 2022, keeping a clean sheet in the process.

Since then, Porteous has played another ten games for the national team, keeping a clean sheet in half of those games, impressing under Clarke.

The former Hibs starlet was excellent for Watford last season in the Championship. Not only did he finish the season with a pass success rate of 84%, but the centre-back also averaged 65.4 touches per game, recovered 4.4 balls per game and won 4.9 total duels each match – a success rate of 59% – as he demonstrated his abilities in the second tier.

Scotland start as heavy underdogs against Germany but they will surely take solace that an upset to open a major international tournament happens every now and again.

Think back to Cameroon defeating world champions Argentina at Italia 90, or Senegal making France look like an ageing team who were on the way down at the 2002 World Cup.

The odds are certainly against the Scots, but if Clarke can unleash a solid starting XI in the Allianz Arena, then nothing can be ruled out, especially in the first match of a major competition.

Hanley shouldn’t be starting against the host nation, as the pace and creativity of several of their players could cause him plenty of problems.

At 32, he should be used as an option off the bench rather than being on the pitch for the first whistle. This suggests Clarke could well go for the likes of McKenna or Porteous to feature tonight, and there is no doubt either of them would be a better option than Hanley.

Quarter-finals (2016)

Having never qualified for any European Championship finals until 2008, Poland have now made it five successive tournament appearances thanks to their shootout victory over Wales in the play-offs.

They join a heavyweight Group D in doing so, and therefore won’t be expected to reach the last 16 – something they have failed to do in three of their four previous attempts.

Their run to the quarter-finals in 2016 remains their best performance to date, so it will be a tournament to remember if they get anywhere near that this time around.

It is now 20 years since the Netherlands last reached the semi-finals of the European Championship, with several disappointments for the Oranje since then. They were knocked out in the quarter-finals at Euro 2008 and failed to make it past the group stages in 2012. Failure to qualify for Euro 2016 was a real shock, and they only managed to reach the round of 16 last time out.

However, with Ronald Koeman now back for a second stint in charge and preparing for his first European Championship campaign as manager, hopes could be higher for the Netherlands. Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is the standout name in the squad, but they also have some exciting youngsters in their ranks, including Jeremie Frimpong and Xavi Simons.

Unfortunately, they will have to make do without star midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who has been forced to pull out due to injury.

After previously failing to qualify for the tournament prior to 2008 (when they took part as co-hosts), Austria are now gearing up for their fourth European Championship campaign out of a possible five. Former Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick is the man tasked with looking to take Das Team out of Group D.

In qualifying, Austria conceded less than a goal a game and held Belgium to an away draw, while they also recorded a statement friendly win over Germany at the end of 2023. Their results this calendar year have also been impressive, namely a 6-1 thumping of Turkey in March. In fact, since November 2022, they have only lost once – to Belgium eight months ago.

Marcel Sabitzer, Konrad Laimer and forward Marko Arnautovic are some of the more well-known names in the squad, so they could hold the key to Austria getting out of the group – but they'll have to do so without injured talisman David Alaba.

Sussex secure home quarter-final as George Garton stars again

Sussex secured a home Vitality Blast quarter-final against Lancashire when they beat last season’s winners Essex by six wickets with 10 balls to spare.Replying to a modest Essex total of 136 for 9 they recovered from 59 for five to claim a victory inspired by a partnership of 73 in 10 overs between George Garton and Calum MacLeod.Garton hit an unbeaten 34, and earlier claimed figures of 4 for 21 as Essex, apart from Paul Walter, struggled to make progress in the way they wanted. Walter struck 76 with the help of nine fours and three sixes after arriving with his side 18 for 3.Essex got off to a disastrous start; losing two wickets in the opening over from Garton without a run on the board. Cameron Delport was caught behind by Phil Salt while Feroze Kushi was bowled trying to turn the ball to leg.Varun Chopra lightened the Essex gloom by driving Ollie Robinson for six but in the same over was bowled to leave Essex 18 for 3 in the fourth over. Worse was to follow when Mitchell Claydon joined the attack to breach the defences of Michael Pepper four runs later. That left Simon Harmer and Walter attempting to repair the damage but they found it difficult to make progress against bowlers who gave nothing away, so much so that the halfway point of their innings arrived with only 47 on the board.A reverse sweep to the boundary off left-arm spinner Danny Briggs brought up the 50 and in the same over Walter unleashed a superb drive for six.A couple of boundaries by Walter off former Essex paceman Tymal Mills improved fortunes for the home side before the introduction of David Wiese ended the partnership after it had yielded 43. Harmer was the man to depart as he skied a top edge which Salt accepted with ease.Much then depended on Walter if Essex were to post any sort of challenge and he responded by punishing Briggs for six and a four as he moved towards his half-century.He reached it with a leg glance to the fence but immediately afterwards he lost debutant Robin Das who was caught at square leg to provide Garton with success in the 16th over. While Walter continued to impress with two more boundaries he was to lose Jack Plom with the total on 109 as he was bowled by Garton to provide the seamer with his fourth success.Following the departure of Aron Nijjar, a victim of Claydon, Walter’s fine innings came to an end in the final over when he was bowled by Robinson for 76. This effort spanned 44 balls and included nine fours and three sixes.Sussex did not embark upon their target in a blaze of glory. Luke Wright’s stumps were left in disarray by Plom with the total on nine and Delray Rawlins provided Ben Allison with his first wicket at senior level when he was caught by Shane Snater.Snater then joined the attack to have former Essex man Ravi Bopara caught on the square leg boundary by Allison to spark a collapse and leave Sussex nerves jangling.Salt, having struck seven fours and a six in his 22-ball 42 was caught in the deep by Harmer, who then made an impact with his offspin by trapping David Wiese leg before to leave the visitors 59 for 5.The total moved into the 70s in the tenth over to leave MacLeod and Garton to put the innings back on even keel. Both were to collect boundaries at the expense of Harmer before the pair carried the total into three figures in the 15th over. The next landmark was the 50 stand, it arriving in the same number of deliveries and the sixth wicket pair continued to keep pace with the required run rate until MacLeod departed for 40, made from 40 balls, with the score on 132 in the 18th over. He was caught in the deep off Plom.Garton then square cut Delport to the boundary in the next over to carry his score to 34 from 30 deliveries and take Sussex to victory.

Arsenal increasingly interested in signing £38m forward alongside Sesko

Arsenal are increasingly interested in signing a £38 million forward alongside RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, as links continue to surround the Slovenia international.

Arsenal in race to sign Sesko for Arteta this summer

Reports have suggested that the 6 foot 5 star is now manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu's top target for the Gunners, with Sesko also being chased by a few other elite sides from both the Premier League and further abroad.

Homegrown £198,000-per-week ace could now be tempted to re-join Arsenal

He could replace a member of Mikel Arteta’s current squad.

ByEmilio Galantini Jun 8, 2024

Arsenal have made a proposal for Sesko behind the scenes, but the 21-year-old is believed to have offers on the table from both Man United and Chelsea as well. In Europe, PSG contacted the striker according to HITC, with Sesko's £55 million release clause proving to be a huge draw for interested sides.

However, Leipzig are also fighting to keep their star striker, as Fabrizio Romano explained on the Here We Go podcast earlier this week.

"He wants to take some time to decide if he will stay at RB Leipzig and sign a new contract, or leave to try a new experience," said Romano (via football.london).

"The first step has to be to inform RB Leipzig of his future at the club. Leipzig presented an important contract to Sesko to be the star of the squad with an improved salary and big money."

"He has to decide whether he wants to be the superstar of Leipzig for one more season or to leave in 2025. He has already said no to two big proposals for €30 million (£26 million) per season salary in Saudi Arabia, so he was not attracted by the possibility.

"He has three proposals from the Premier League – Manchester United, Chelsea & Arsenal – these three clubs have already approached Sesko and presented their project. They want him so now it's basically on the player."

The first transfer saga of this summer window is well underway, but it is believed that Arsenal are keen on signing another forward alongside Sesko. Juventus forward Federico Chiesa, who will be representing Italy at Euro 2024, scored nine goals and registered two assists in 33 Serie A appearances.

Arsenal increasingly interested in Federico Chiesa deal

As per Tutto Juve, Arsenal are increasingly interested in doing a deal for Chiesa this summer, who is said to be valued at around £38 million. The winger is someone who supporters will be familiar with, as Arteta and co were linked last year as well.

Juventus forward Federico Chiesa.

Journalist Dean Jones, speaking to GiveMeSport, branded Chiesa a potentially amazing addition to Arsenal's ranks at that time.

"I love Chiesa and I've always hoped he would one day land in the Premier League. It will be interesting to see how this summer window pans out for him. He's obviously had some injury problems in the not-too-distant past. He's such an exciting player.

"You can imagine he would be awesome in that Arsenal attack too. I'm not convinced it'll be that easy to sign him though, I'm really not."

Leeds flop sold by Orta in 2021 is now worth more than Struijk & Gruev

Leeds United parted company with Victor Orta in May of last year and are now looking to fight their way back to the Premier League without him, with the play-off final against Southampton at Wembley on Sunday.

The former Whites sporting director ultimately contributed to the club's relegation from the top-flight last season as his appointments, Jesse Marsch and Javi Gracia, failed to keep them in the division.

Now working at Sevilla, the Spanish chief did have his fair share of howlers and blinders in the transfer market, and one that looks to be in the former category is the sale of Rafa Mujica as the club had a nightmare with him.

Former Leeds sporting director Victor Orta.

The young striker was sold by Orta in the summer of 2021 and has since gone on to thrive away from Elland Road, with a reported transfer pending that makes him more valuable than Leeds star Pascal Struijk.

Rafa Mujica's form since leaving Leeds

Signed from Barcelona in 2019, Mujica did not make a single first-team appearance for the Yorkshire-based outfit in two year before his move to Las Palmas on a free transfer in 2021.

After one goal in 14 league matches for the Spanish side during the 2021/22 campaign, Portuguese side Arouca swooped in to secure his services and they never looked back.

He produced 14 goals and one assist in 32 matches in all competitions for the club in his first season in Portugal, before kicking on again this term.

As you can see in the table above, the 25-year-old marksman, who scored 23 goals in all competitions, was prolific in the Liga Portugal as he outperformed his xG by almost four goals.

Rafa Mujica's big-money transfer this summer

The former Whites youngster is now reportedly on course to make a move away from Arouca this summer to join Qatar-based side Al-Sadd.

Journalist Pedro Sepúlveda reported earlier this month that he is in advanced talks to join them for a fee of €9m with a further €2m in add-ons, taking the total package to €11m (£9.4m).

This means that Mujica is currently valued higher than a number of Whites stars, including Glen Kamara (€6m), Ilia Gruev (€5.4m), and Pascal Struijk (€9.5m) – per FootballTransfers.

Leeds United defender Pascal Struijk.

Struijk had made 23 appearances in the Championship at centre-back during the first half of the campaign before a groin injury put an end to his season.

This speaks to the Spanish striker's turnaround in fortunes since leaving Yorkshire that he is now worth more than the Dutch defender, who has the eighth-highest Sofascore rating in the Leeds squad this term (7.12) and captained the team on many occasions this season.

It has been reported that, as one of the teams that helped to develop Mujica, Leeds will receive 5% of the initial fee, which would be roughly £380k from £7.6m in this case.

That £380k may not be enough to forget about how much of a nightmare they had by letting him go in 2021 as his 20 league goals this season suggest that he could have turned into a strong player for the club, given that Crysencio Summerville (20) is the only player with more than 14 strikes to his name this term.

Leeds have "inquired" about signing £55k-p/w star who'd thrive with Gnonto

The Whites are reportedly interested in a swoop to sign the soon-to-be free agent defender.

Orta had a howler when he decided to let the centre-forward go as he was not given a single first-team opportunity to prove himself and should have been given a chance, which his form this term suggests Mujica may have taken, to prove himself.

Instead, he has gone on to be a roaring success in Portugal and is now looking set for a big-money move to Qatar, making him more valuable than several of Daniel Farke's stars.

Rahul Tewatia and Sanju Samson pull off record chase in stunning Rajasthan Royals win

Tewatia turned around a painfully poor start to slam five sixes in an over; Mayank Agarwal’s ton went in vain for Kings XI

Manjrekar: Rahul not the reason Punjab lost

As it unfolded, it felt like a chase that defied logic in every way possible. But by the time the Rajasthan Royals were done mowing down a target of 224 – an IPL record – the scorecard reflected one bit of cold, hard T20 logic: the team that hits more sixes usually wins. Kings XI Punjab hit 11 sixes – seven coming off the bat of Mayank Agarwal, who made a scintillating 106 off 50 balls – and the Royals hit 18.Sanju Samson hit seven of those sixes while scoring a second successive half-century for the first time in his IPL career. His 42-ball 85 was more reward for the intense training he did during cricket’s Covid-19 hiatus, which enabled him to take his natural ball-striking ability and turn it into an instrument of almost scientific precision.Samson put on 81 for the second wicket with Steven Smith in just 40 balls, putting the Royals well in touch with their asking rate. They then promoted Rahul Tewatia – their only left-hander – to No. 4, and the move was beginning to look like one of the most ill-judged tactical interventions in IPL history when he struggled to hit the ball off the square and crawled to 8 off 19 balls. But the six-hitting ability that he possesses came into view just when the Royals seemed out of it. Tewatia smacked Sheldon Cottrell for five sixes in a match-turning, match-defining 18th over, and an improbable 51 off 18 balls turned into a far more straightforward 21 off 12.Rahul Tewatia slams one down the ground•BCCIA partnership of two temposSent in to bat – Smith, the Royals captain, expected dew to play an influential role through the second innings, and it did – Kings XI got off to a flier, their openers rushing to 60 in the powerplay. From there, Agarwal and KL Rahul extended their partnership to 183 – the third highest for the first wicket and the eighth highest overall in the IPL.The two batsmen approached their innings differently. At one end, Agarwal went for his shots at every opportunity, and also looked to create opportunities to play his shots. He moved around his crease – to manufacture room to hit Ankit Rajpoot over mid-off, for instance, or to manufacture length to shovel the quickish legspin of Tewatia over midwicket – and in general went through with his shots with a degree of abandon; some of the sixes he hit weren’t off the cleanest connections, but a batsman can gamble on a small ground like Sharjah.Even so, Agarwal’s sparkling form allowed him to achieve a control percentage of 80 – which is pretty high for an innings achieving a strike rate of 212.00. At the other end, Rahul faced 54 balls – four more than Agarwal – and pulled off a control percentage of 85, but only struck at 127.77. Aside from a hat-trick of fours against Jofra Archer in the fourth over, he seemed to almost consciously play second fiddle to Agarwal, giving him the strike whenever possible. It’s a common tactic in partnerships like this, and Rahul has the game to up his tempo dramatically later on – his unbeaten 132 against Royal Challengers Bangalore followed the same template.Mayank Agarwal goes over the top•Getty ImagesMaxwell, Pooran apply the finishOn this day, however, both Rahul and Agarwal seemed to tire as their partnership progressed, and from 172 for no loss at the 15-over mark, Kings XI scored 22 off the next 18 balls – a period in which they lost both openers.Only 21 balls remained in the innings when Glenn Maxwell walked in, and only 12 when Nicholas Pooran came to the crease. It can be difficult to come in at that sort of time and find the boundary immediately, but both managed it to varying degrees of success. Rajpoot and Tom Curran managed to tie Maxwell down to an extent, but he created a couple of boundaries with his movement around the crease. Pooran, however, got a few balls in his slot and dispatched all of them ruthlessly – he hit three sixes and a four in just eight balls, three of those boundaries coming in an 18-run final over from Jofra Archer.Smith and Samson keep Royals in the huntThis would be a record chase if the Royals could pull it off, but the pitch was still just as flat – and the outfield just as small – as it had been during Kings XI’s innings. Steven Smith gave them the early momentum they needed with three fours in the first two overs, all the result of a still head and trust in some of the best hands and wrists in the business.Samson, who arrived after the early departure of Jos Buttler, got stuck in straightaway, swatting the first legal delivery he faced – a short-of-length ball from Cottrell – over long-on for six. He continued in much the same manner, with his set-up at the crease – emphasizing a strong base and the stillest of heads – and the pick-up of his bat designed with six-hitting in mind, first and foremost. With Smith using his reach and powerful wrists to stunning effect, the Royals motored to 69 for 1 in the powerplay. Thirty-one more runs came off the next 17 balls, before Smith skewed James Neesham’s legcutter into the off-side sweeper’s hands. A similar line from Neesham had brought Smith three fours in the sixth over, but the bowler came out on top with the extra protection in the deep.Sanju Samson rolls out a reverse sweep•BCCITewatia, part 1At that point, the Royals needed 124 off 11 overs. There were sound reasons for them to promote Tewatia: he was the only left-hander in their line-up, he had shown flashes of six-hitting ability in the past – and more than flashes in the team’s recent training sessions – and there were two legspinners in the Kings XI attack to target. That was the theory. But Kings XI brought on their sixth bowler – the offspinner Glenn Maxwell – as soon as Tewatia came in, and when they did bowl a legspinner at him, it was the confounding figure of Ravi Bishnoi, who slants the ball across left-handers from wide of the crease, and then predominantly bowls wrong’uns turning away from their hitting arc.Tewatia struggled to come to terms with either of them, or the pace changes of Neesham. His first 19 balls brought him eight runs. And in all that time, Samson only faced 15 balls. When Bishnoi ran up for the fifth ball of the 15th over, the Royals needed 90 off 32 balls.Tewatia, part 2Smith later revealed Samson told Tewatia to jump out of his crease to Bishnoi, slog, and see what happened. He did that and miscued a six down the ground. Then Samson pounced on a crucial 16th over, hitting Maxwell for three effortless sixes to keep the Royals just about in touch with their required rate.A slower bouncer from Shami ended Samson’s innings in the 17th over, but a brace of fours from Robin Uthappa ensured the Royals were still in it, somewhere within the outer limits of probability. Then, finally, Tewatia got to face someone he’s ideally set up to hit: a left-arm quick angling the ball into his hitting arc. As if to show just how specialised T20 hitting can be, Tewatia turned into the Tewatia the Royals had seen in the nets. Cottrell kept giving him the angle he needed, from left-arm over, and the length – and even the line – didn’t seem to matter to Tewatia. When Cottrell went short, he stepped inside the line and pulled him for six. Back of a length, muscled over long-on. Full, over long-off. Length, wide of off, slogged over midwicket.Archer finishes it offThat still left the Royals needing 21 off 12. It became 21 off 11 when Uthappa holed out to long-off. But they had more six-hitting left in the tank. Archer had smashed an unbeaten 27 off eight balls against the Super Kings, and he picked up from where he left off, hitting the first two balls he faced, from Shami, for sixes over midwicket and down the ground. All that was left was for Tewatia to complete his redemptive arc with a flat six over point to move past 50, and for a small measure of late drama – Tewatia and Riyan Parag falling in the space of three balls to leave the Royals needing two off four balls. Tom Curran’s experience sealed the deal off the legspin of M Ashwin, an assured loft over extra-cover ending a quite remarkable contest with three balls to spare.ALSO SEE: Kings XI Punjab v Rajasthan Royals live score, September 27 2020
