'I thought we were down and out' – Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli thought India were “down and out” in the last over of the game before the Super Over, when New Zealand needed only three to win from five balls. Ross Taylor started the last over by striking a Mohammed Shami full toss for six before taking a single, and New Zealand scored only one run – a bye – off the next three balls. Taylor was then bowled off the last ball when they needed one to win.In the Super Over too, New Zealand were ahead after setting India 18 to win. India scored eight off the first four balls and needed 10 off two, and Rohit Sharma struck two sixes to hand the hosts another Super Over loss.”Yeah, unbelievable. I thought at one stage we were gone, and down and out,” Kohli said at the presentation. “Kane [Williamson] batting on 95, he played a brilliant innings and I was just telling our coach they probably deserved to finish the game off the way he batted and led from the front. [I] feel bad for him, these kind of knocks when they don’t go through, I know what that feeling is.”I thought we were gone at one stage and then when Shami bowled those two dot balls, then we got a ball and run to go. I thought, ‘ok, we could go to the Super Over’. But in the Super Over the discussion was around [how] New Zealand must be feeling some pressure because they let the game slip away and it was our turn to hit our areas. But again Kane played couple of brilliant shots against Jasprit [Bumrah] who’s probably one of the best death bowlers in the world. Again we were put under pressure, such a see-saw game. You didn’t really know what to make of it so you could just do one thing which was to stay calm, observe what’s happening and do your best.”Kohli was all praise for Shami who was given the last over on a day Bumrah leaked 45 runs in his four overs. Shami had conceded 24 in his first three overs and even though he delivered a full toss on the first ball of the 20th over which went for six, he targeted the blockhole again to concede a single before banging in three short balls which didn’t fetch New Zealand a single run off the bat. With the scores level and one ball left, Shami aimed for the stumps again, because, as Kohli explained, New Zealand would have won otherwise.Rohit Sharma is mobbed after clinching the win•AFP

“We got a wicket at a crucial stage, Shami again showed his experience and bowled a couple of balls outside off stump and then last ball we had a discussion. We came up with the fact that we have to try and hit the stumps otherwise it’s a single anyway and then we lose the game. So he went for it, got the wicket and the game turned on its head.”In the Super Over as well, New Zealand again put pressure on us. Rohit was outstanding today, in the first half and the last two balls as well. We knew if he gets one hit, the bowler’s under pressure because he’s such a good striker of the ball and that’s exactly what happened, his experience came in. Overall, top day for us and beautiful game to be a part of.”Sharma did in the end what New Zealand could not. With 10 to win off two in the Super Over, he cracked two length deliveries from Tim Southee for sixes – one over wide long-on and the other over long-off – and sealed the series for India with two matches to spare. All this after believing India had lost the game.”Everything was packed,” Rohit said at the post-match press conference. “The whole stuff was inside my bag. I had to get it out. Literally took me five minutes to find my abdomen guard because I don’t know where it was. We never thought it’d go to the Super Over, the way they were batting. At one point it looked like they can easily win the game. But I think that Shami’s last over was crucial. That actually got us the victory, not my two sixes. We defended nine runs, it’s not easy, with the dew and the wicket settling in nicely, with two set batsmen there as well, one on 95 [Williamson] and the other their most experienced player [Taylor]. So hats off to Shami.”On batting in the Super over itself, which he hadn’t ever done before, Sharma had a simple plan. “I’ve never done that before, so I don’t know what to expect – whether to go from the first ball or just take a single and put pressure on the last three or four balls of the over,” he said at the presentation. “I just wanted to stay still and was waiting for the bowlers to make a mistake. I know the pitch was good. Was just trying to stay still and see what I can do.”Sharma was asked about the importance of keeping the mind blank instead of going with mindset of playing pre-determined shots. He responded saying he has always believed that the batsman held the advantage in a Super Over regardless of the how big the target is. The bowler, he pointed out, is always under pressure. But he agreed that he had to sort out some points mentally before he took guard. “I was thinking whether I should move in the crease or not, should I stay still? These were the two or three thoughts that crossed my mind,” Rohit said. “In the end I decided I would stay still (at the crease). Let him [Southee] make the mistake. And the ball pitched in my zone and I took advantage.”Sharma had earlier top-scored too for India, with a 65 off 40 by bringing up a fifty within the powerplay itself when he hammered Hamish Bennett for 26 runs off five balls in the sixth over.”Yeah it was a good performance, although a little disappointed with the way I got out,” Sharma assessed his day. “I should have carried on a little while. But again wanted to just come out and bat the way I bat normally. The first two games it didn’t happen but I was quite determined to do it today. We knew that if we won this game, we will win the series. So it’s important for the important members of the squad to step up and count when it matters the most.”

West Brom could sign a "fantastic" replacement for Alex Mowatt

West Bromwich Albion look to be wobbling their way to a playoff spot being secured, the Championship promotion hopefuls picking up just one win in their last six league matches after crashing to a 2-1 defeat at Leicester City at the weekend.

Carlos Corberan's men won't be too alarmed, however, believing they will have enough to get over the line to then compete in the lottery of the playoffs.

Looking more long-term, the Baggies know they will also need to tie a number of their main stars to extended deals this summer with the likes of Cedric Kipre and Alex Mowatt nearing towards the end of their current deals worryingly.

Jayson Molumby

West Brom might well view this rumoured transfer target as a long-term replacement for Mowatt if the former Leeds United man does leave this summer or sometime in the future, with the 20-year-old in question tipped to become even more of a star as he grows.

West Brom transfer news

The West Midlands outfit are reportedly keen on adding Huddersfield Town midfielder Brahima Diarra to their roster in the summer, but West Brom are not a lone suitor going after the Terriers starlet's services.

The likes of Leicester and Hull City in the Championship are also rumoured to be going after Diarra with a view to getting a bargain deal owing to his contract running out soon, alongside RB Salzburg being interested from Austria.

It's been a breakout campaign for the 20-year-old, seen in this clip against the Foxes earlier in the season where Diarra shone, who could be due a move to a higher-up club subsequently.

Corberan will hope his prior connections to Diarra, having overseen his development in West Yorkshire during his spell as Terriers manager, can seal a deal in West Brom's favour who will need more bodies in midfield if Mowatt does walk away from the club soon.

Brahima Diarra as Mowatt's replacement

Diarra hasn't quite been a regular first-teamer at the John Smith's Stadium this season but has shown in flashes when starting why clubs such as West Brom are eyeing up a move.

From 23 appearances this campaign, the Mali U23 international has tallied up two assists with his last coming against Hull City in February in league action.

He's got some way to go to be as impactful as Mowatt has been for the Baggies this season, with the 29-year-old picking up five assists in the Championship and helping himself to a solitary strike.

Known for scoring pearlers throughout his lengthy stay in West Midlands to date – firing in five strikes from 80 games including this screamer away at Cardiff City in 2022 – losing a player of Mowatt's quality in the summer for nothing would be a bit of a disaster for Corberan's men.

The deal for Diarra could be long-term thinking to try and solve that situation therefore, but the 20-year-old won't be able to fill the gap left behind by the experienced midfielder immediately.

In an ideal world, Corberan and Co will end up sealing a deal for Diarra – who was described as a "fantastic" talent by former Baggies player Carlton Palmer recently – to then utilise him as Mowatt's understudy, before allowing the youngster to thrive at first-team level further down the line.

West Brom could well have to thrust Diarra into the senior fold sooner than anticipated if a deal goes through and Mowatt does exit the Hawthorns, hoping the midfielder can go on to be another raw gem that excels in the first-team alongside a previously untested Tom Fellows.

Rangers left to regret signing Beale flop who rinsed the club of £3.5m

Glasgow Rangers head into the summer transfer window facing yet another rebuild, as Philippe Clement will be looking to bring in his own signings, all while shipping out several underperformers.

Six players are out of contract once the season finishes, which will see the Light Blues free up some of the wage bill for some potential signings, but the Belgian has a massive job in front of him.

The 50-year-old may have to move on a player or two in order to raise significant funds, as Michael Beale’s lavish spending spree last summer has set the club back financially.

Cyriel Dessers cost around £4.5m and while he has netted 17 goals since arriving, his performances have often been dismal, going long stretches without looking like finding the back of the net.

Danilo was another extravagant purchase. The Brazilian cost £6m, although the jury is still out on him as he has missed 31 matches due to injury.

Danilo

It was the signing of Sam Lammers which has proven to be the biggest waste of money, however, as the Dutchman failed to justify his transfer fee during the first half of the season.

How much Rangers paid for Sam Lammers

Having lost players such as Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos, and Scott Arfield – who contributed 42 goal involvements between them – it was clear Beale had to bolster his attacking options.

This saw him splash money on Dessers and Danilo, but before the pair joined, it was Lammers who was first to make the move to Ibrox.

Rangers agreed a fee of £3m to lure him from Serie A side Atalanta in June. Having scored only six goals across the previous three seasons, the warning signs were there that Beale wasn’t going to be signing a prolific goalscorer.

During his first six months at Ibrox, Lammers was often played as a number ten, being shoehorned into a position that clearly didn’t attune to his talents.

Sam Lammers’ statistics at Rangers

The former Feyenoord forward scored against Newcastle in pre-season in what was his first game for the Light Blues, looking sharp in the process.

His display meant Beale was going to utilise him in a slightly deeper role rather than as a centre-forward, but it failed to pay off.

Sam Lammers

Across 31 games for the Gers, Lammers found the back of the net only twice, while registering a further two assists, hardly the numbers which justified a £3m transfer fee.

Among his teammates, the 26-year-old ranked just ninth for goals and assists (three) in the top flight, while also ranking fourth for big chances missed (six), 18th for big chances created (one), 25th for key passes per game (0.3) and fourth for successful dribbles per game (1.1), hardly stats worthy of a starting spot in the team.

Despite Beale being sacked following a 3-1 defeat to Aberdeen, Clement persisted with Lammers, largely due to the fact he was still assessing his entire squad, meaning every player was given a clean slate.

The Dutchman enjoyed his finest performance during a clash against Dundee at the start of November, registering 50% of his total goal contributions for the club in the game.

Sam Lammers

Operating behind Danilo, Lammers also created one big chance and made one key pass during the game, while succeeding with two of his three dribble attempts, and it certainly looked like it could be a major turning point for him.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be, going goalless in his final nine matches for the Ibrox side prior to the winter break.

Sam Lammers record at FC Utrecht

With his chances limited, the forward opted to move back to his homeland in order to join Utrecht on a loan deal until the end of the campaign.

It has proven to be a wonderful choice, with Lammers being used as a centre-forward rather than a number ten.

He has played just 14 games for the club yet has scored eight goals and grabbed three assists. Not only that, but Lammers netted in six consecutive Eredivisie matches, equalling a 40 year old club record in the process.

This is certainly not the player Clement saw at Ibrox, perhaps suggesting that the pressure was too much, while he was played out of position in an attacking midfield role far too often.

If the club receive an offer from the Dutch side to take him on a permanent deal, Clement should take it, as he could use the funds to bring in one or two of his own signings this summer.

His six months at Ibrox have cost the Gers a pretty penny, however.

How much Sam Lammers earned at Rangers

Upon moving to Scotland, the player was given a four-year contract, earning £18k-per-week, which saw him earn more than Abdallah Sima, Ridvan Yilmaz and John Souttar to name but a few.

After a few months, it was evident that this was far too high a wage to be paying for someone who was regularly delivering woeful performances and once he was shipped out on loan, Utrecht began to pay his weekly salary.

Over the course of his first six months though, Lammers cost the Light Blues £3.5m. Combining his £3m transfer fee plus the £500k he earned in wages, which culminated in him scoring just twice for the club.

It was yet another case of acting too quickly in the transfer market and splurging money on a player who was unlikely to generate a profit upon leaving the Light Blues.

Thankfully, his displays for Utrecht could convince them, or perhaps another Eredivisie side to take a punt on him this summer, allowing Rangers to potentially recoup their outlay from last summer.

Rangers forward Sam Lammers.

Wasting £3.5m is terrible from a financial perspective and this could severely limit Clement’s spending in the forthcoming transfer window, especially considering he badly needs to sign a few players.

Under the shrewd leadership of the Belgian coach, signings like Lammers will hopefully be a thing of the past, with the transfer ethos going forward focusing on younger talents who could generate a significant profit in the future.

Wrexham are up and running in League One and are now preparing for a trip to Bramall Lane in the first round of the Carabao Cup. Ex-Sheffield Wednesday star Fletcher is unlikely to be the most popular player on show, but expects to share any terrace taunts with a club colleague. Fletcher has said: “It will be a good game. I don't think I will be the most liked person having played for Sheffield Wednesday but that doesn't bother me at all. James McClean will get more pelters than me so I am alright!”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Fletcher opened his goal account for 2024-25 in a season-opening 3-2 win over Wycombe and has now found the target in all four divisions of the English Football League. The former Burnley, Wolves, Sunderland and Stoke frontman added on that achievement: “I have scored in every league now which is good. It was my first appearance in League One so I have played in every league and scored in every league in England which is a nice little milestone for myself.”

Tottenham have sat down to discuss signing £26m ace likened to Gibbs-White

Tottenham have "sat down at the table" to discuss signing a £26 million player who's been called "similar" to Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White.

Spurs targeting new midfielder and attacker this summer

As reported by reliable media sources, like football.london correspondent Alasdair Gold, Spurs are targeting a new number six and attacker for Ange Postecoglou this summer.

The Australian think he’d fit in “seamlessly”.

Specific names are already being shortlisted ahead of the next transfer window, and there have been many mentioned this week alone. RB Leipzig ace Dani Olmo has played his way onto Tottenham's transfer agenda, among others, as the north Londoners seek more threatening options.

Tottenham have an option to make Timo Werner's signing permanent for around £15 million, but while the German has got off to a good start overall, some have expressed doubt over his ability to chip in significantly long-term.

"I’m sorry, he misses so many good chances. And those chances that he missed, they can change games. Technically, he’s one of the worst players in the Premier League. I’m going to say that, because I honestly believe that," said pundit Jay Bothroyd to Optus Sport in a harsh assessment of Werner.

“He doesn’t cross the ball well, he hits it as hard as he can across the face of the goal all the time. He never picks anybody out. His finishing’s poor. His passing’s poor.

“And yes, you can say that he’s effective. But then I’m saying, okay, he’s an athlete. In this day and age, I look at him and I say he’s effective because of his athleticism. As he gets older and he loses that athleticism, how effective is he going to be then?”

Fabrizio Romano also says Tottenham want a player who can add more goals and assists to Postecoglou's side, and one astute option could be Genoa's Albert Gudmundsson.

The Iceland international has bagged 13 goals and three assists in 30 Serie A starts under Albert Gilardino this term, leading to reported interest from N17.

Tottenham sit down to discuss signing Albert Gudmundsson

According to a report from Italy this week, specifically newspaper Tuttosport, Tottenham have "sat down at the table" to discuss signing Gudmundsson this summer, and so have Inter Milan.

However, they could be better placed to seal a move for the attacking midfielder than Inter, as agent Oscar Damiani told FCInterNews that Italian clubs most likely won't reach the potential £26 million asking price for Gudmundsson.

Called "similar" to Forest star Gibbs-White by Football Transfers, the 26-year-old has also been likened to Liverpool star Mohamed Salah by teammate Kevin Strootman.

“He reminds me of Salah when he was at Roma, in that every now and then he disappears. Much like Salah then, he would have four or five chances per match and only score at most one," said Strootman.

“They used to say that if Salah was more clinical, he would be playing for Liverpool, and that is exactly what happened. All joking aside, Gudmundsson is a devastating player and also an exemplary professional.”

Siriwardene sets up Sri Lanka's victory in her final match

The allrounder took 4 for 16, the best figures of the tournament so far, to leave Bangladesh winless

Report by Alex Malcolm at Junction Oval02-Mar-2020Shashikala Siriwardene held her own retirement party on her final day in international cricket taking a tournament-best 4 for 16 to help Sri Lanka to a consolation nine-wicket win over Bangladesh at the Junction Oval.Bangladesh suffocated against Sri Lanka’s disciplined and skilful attack, which was led by the crafty off-spin of Siriwardene and the wily left-arm seam of Udeshika Prabodhani. The pair delivered 26 dot balls between them in eight overs, with Sirwardene picking up the spoils and Player of the Match honours. Kavisha Dilhari was equally as frugal while Achini Kulasuriya’s extra pace picked up two wickets in the powerplay. Nigar Sultana played a lone hand for Bangladesh making a classy 39 as they struggled to 91 for 8 from their 20 overs having won the toss and chosen to bat.Bangladesh failed to apply any pressure in the chase fluffing two straight-forward chances in the opening two overs. Both Chamari Atapattu and Hasini Perera made their most of their luck blasting a 51-run opening stand before Anushka Sanjeewani joined Perara to finish the job with 27 balls to spare.Siriwardene sent off in styleSirwardene received a retirement gift the day before the game from the India team in the form of a signed shirt. Bangladesh joined the Sri Lanka team in giving her a guard of honour as she walked onto an international ground for the final time. They then gifted her the second-best T20I figures of her career through a lack of intent and some odd shot choices with Murshida Khatun falling sweeping to an offspinner in the powerplay for the second successive match. Prabodhani continued her impressive tournament bowling with unwavering accuracy which allowed Siriwardene and Kulasuriya to attack from the other end. Kulasuriya’s extra pace and bounce picked up two wickets in the last over of the powerplay to leave Bangladesh reeling at 26 for 3. Prabodhani bowled her four overs straight with 0 for 13 including 12 dots. Her tournament economy rate was just 3.68 from four games.Sultana solo effortSultana held the innings together with an excellent 39. But it was a strange innings from her. At one stage she had faced 10 dot balls, including leaves and defensive shots to be just 6 off 16, before she unleashed two of the best inside-out lofted cover drives of the tournament. One came off Sugandika Kumari who was bowling left-arm orthodox from over the wicket, the other was from the offspin of Dilhari at the other end. But thereafter Bangladesh went a full 36 deliveries without finding the boundary. It was left to Sultana again in the 18th to club back-to-back boundaries down the ground using the pace of Kulasuriya. Siriwardene returned to pick up two more wickets in the 19th over and finish her career with 4 for 16. Sultana was unjustly run out off the last ball of the innings trying to selflessly run for a second while her captain Salma Khatun was oddly content with one.Disastrous dropsBangladesh’s only chance of winning the game was to remove Atapattu cheaply. They had their chance to get both openers in the first two overs, and like so many catches in this tournament, spilled them. Hasini Perera was dropped by Sultana off Salma Khatun in the opening over attempting a flashing cut shot. Such catches are never easy up to the stumps but it wasn’t a major deflection. Worse was yet to come. Two balls into the second over Atapattu gifted a simple head high chance to mid-off where Fargana Hoque watched it go into her hands and then out. Some of her team-mates slumped to their knees as the ball hit the turf. Perera and Atapattu struck four fours and a six in the next 14 balls to rub salt into the wounds. Atapattu struck a second massive six over long-off in the ninth over to bring up the fifty partnership as Sri Lanka looked on track for a 10-wicket win.Support acts finish the setSri Lanka’s only challenge came when Atapattu departed. Sultana made up for her earlier drop with a sharp piece of work to have the star opener stumped off Nahida Akter. Atapattu was beaten by a nicely flighted off-break and had no part of her heel grounded behind the popping crease as the keeper whipped the bails off. Akter became the youngest to take 50 T20I wickets in the women’s game surpassing Sophie Ecclestone’s day-old record. It left Sri Lanka still needing 40 from 60 balls with every remaining player in the line-up having scored less than 50 runs for the tournament, but Perera and Sanjeewani made light work of the challenge. Both found the boundary regularly with skilful sweeps and classical footwork. The cruised to victory in a risk-free fashion with more than four overs to spare.
