Another game and another early goal for Albania! Qasim Laci was brought into the starting line-up for this fixture and wasted no time in making an impact, as he latched onto a tantalising cross from Jasir Asani in the 11th minute to glance his header home.

One of the shock stories in this tournament weren't done there, either. Nedim Bajrami found himself free in the box and forced Dominik Livakovic into a smart save down to his right. Albania were pushing for a second.

Croatia did, however, attempt to address the issues within their line-up at half-time as they made a flurry of changes. Mario Pasalic and Luka Sucic were introduced and they did look more threatening following the changes. Indeed, the goals were coming and they eventually arrived as Andrej Kramaric slotted an equaliser past Thomas Strakosha, before Sucic's effort cannoned off an Albanian defender and gave Croatia the lead.

Now 2-1 ahead, it looked as if the game was over and the points were in the bag for Croatia. How wrong were we! Albania continued to push and eventually found a stoppage-time equaliser through Klaus Gjasula, keeping their Euro 2024 dreams alive.

Croatia and Albania had never met in a competitive match prior to their clash in Hamburg on Wednesday – despite the two sides only being separated by just over 500 kilometres.

With all the odds stacked against them yet again, Albania simply a found a way to get something from this fixture. They dominated the first half and were forced to adapt after the break – and eventually they got their reward. Hard work, perseverance and belief have kept their Euro 2024 hopes alive as they sit third in Group B.

You can't look past Croatia as a collective being the big losers here. For all their promise in the second half of this fixture, and how threatening they looked in attack, they failed to hold out and secure all three points in the dying embers of the game.

It looks like this tournament is going to be a step too far for the old guard, and Monday's final group-stage fixture against Italy may well be the last time we see Luka Modric in a Croatia shirt. Sad times.

O’Neil buzzing: Wolves confirm double boost in team news vs Brentford

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been handed a pair of massive boosts on the team news front ahead of their clash with Brentford this Saturday, with the feel-good factor continuing to echo around Molineux this season.

O'Neil defying expectations

Heading into the campaign, expectations were low for the Midlands outfit if truth be told. Former boss Julen Lopetegui departed the club just three days before the new Premier League season after a protracted dispute over transfers, and the club appointed former Bournemouth boss Gary O'Neil on short notice.

With the club sailing close to the wind with financial fair play and desperate to avoid the fate that has since befallen Everton, money was tight at Molineux even with the departure of club captain Ruben Neves, especially given that they had already committed to the permanent signing of Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid.

Matheus Cunha

As a result, plenty expected them to be stuck in a relegation dog-fight, and four defeats in their opening five games did little to change that. However, they have since turned their fortunes around and a comprehensive win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in their most recent Premier League outing saw them leapfrog the Blues and head into the top half of the table, 13 points clear of the drop zone and almost certain to be playing Premier League football once more next season.

Indeed, a win in their next game could see them move yet further up the Premier League and onto the cusp of European football should results go their way, with seventh placed West Ham just four points ahead of O'Neil's side.

Now, they host a Brentford side far less certain of its place in next season's top flight, with the Bees struggling for form even with the return of talisman Ivan Toney from a gambling ban. Thomas Frank's side have picked up just 22 points from 22 games and sit three points above the drop zone, albeit with Nottingham Forest and Luton Town between them and 18th placed Everton.

Wolves team news brings double boost

To that end, Wolves have confirmed a major boost as a pair of stars are set to return from international duty in time for the clash, with O'Neil said to be very pleased. Both Boubacar Traore and Hwang Hee-Chan have missed the last three games for their club side after representing Mali and South Korea in the Africa Cup of Nations and Asian Cup respectively.

However, their runs in those competitions have since come to an end, with Hwang's side knocked out at the semi-final stage by Jordan in a shock result. Traore, meanwhile, suffered quarter-final heartbreak against the Ivory Coast, as the Elephants scored in the 90th minute to force extra time, before netting in stoppage time at the end of the added time to send Mali home.

It is good news for Wolves though, with Hwang the club's joint top goalscorer as things stand and now ready to be unleashed on Brentford, while the return of Traore means that O'Neil has more depth in the centre of the park.

It remains to be seen whether O'Neil restores either to the starting lineup after impressive performances from both Pedro Neto and Matheus Cunha in the last game, but the pair could well be game-changers from the substitutes bench against the tired legs of the Bees.

Glenn Maxwell tames England surface at last as Lancashire thrash Durham

Maxwell, Steven Croft notch half-centuries as visitors fail to give chase

David Hopps21-Jul-2019

Glenn Maxwell was in the runs•Getty Images

It turns out that Glenn Maxwell, as far away from a synthetic cricketer as it is possible to get, just needed an artificial pitch to put his English summer to rights.Well, not an artificial pitch exactly, a hybrid pitch, used for the first time in English county cricket by Lancashire at Old Trafford (unless somebody in High Office somewhere is keeping a secret) as they made light work of Durham by 73 runs.At least 10 counties have installed hybrid strips, with The Kia Oval housing as many as six on their square. Although the majority are used chiefly as practice nets, confidence in them is growing and several others could potentially stage a match during the Blast.Although the ECB plan to appraise hybrid pitches officially on a variety of measures – how much they seam or swing; how fast or bouncy – the initial verdict is a positive one. The pitch appeared to have good pace and carry and Lancashire, in making 189 for 3, struck nine sixes, only two short of their T20 record.Maxwell, who had an undistinguished World Cup for Australia, averaging only 22 with the bat without a half-century to his name and not taking a wicket in 49 overs, must have been sick of the sight of English grass by the time the hosts picked up the trophy at Lord’s a week ago.But give him up to five percent polyethylene yarn sewn into the Old Trafford pitch and he strutted his stuff again, blazing 58 from 33 balls with four sixes before he top-edged a sweep against the left-arm spin of his fellow Australian, D’Arcy Short, to deep square.Hybrid pitches are not destined to play a part in Championship cricket – at least not Championship cricket as we know it – because they don’t wear naturally in the time-accustomed manner so robbing the longer format of much of its charm. But that hardiness – up to five times more wear – could be a saviour for tired English squares, especially on Test grounds with demands growing ever greater and The Hundred scheduled to begin next summer.Maxwell’s second-wicket stand of 93 in 52 balls with Steven Croft was the centrepiece of Lancashire’s victory in front of a crowd of 13,710 – a Lancashire record for a non-Roses T20 tie at Old Trafford.Croft had a successful afternoon, too, batting through for 63 from 45 balls – the sixth Lancashire batsman to achieve it in T20 – opening for Lancashire for the first time since Leicester at Liverpool early in 2009 because of injury to Liam Livingstone and making light of the fact he received only 36 percent of the strike. His contract is up at the end of the season, but, at 34, he is having a good one.His verdict on the hybrid pitch was a positive one. “It was good,” he said. “We have netted on them last year and this year. It played well and the pace felt really nice. We have a brilliant slow-bowling department and they got a bit out of it as well. So it’s thumbs up from us.”Three of Maxwell’s four sixes actually came off full tosses, leaving a possibility that an ECB analyst might have to stride onto the square and request that for the benefits of research could they please make more of an effort to locate the cut bit.Two successive full bungers from Ben Raine took Maxwell past 50, the first six mishit and barely making it, the second leaving nothing in doubt. The one that bounced, from Short, finished on the pavilion TV gantry. The best shot of all, though, came from Alex Davies, who hauled Brydon Carse over midwicket into Brian Statham Way. Carse is a physically more imposing figure than he was a couple of years ago, and bowls a quick ball, but his figures filled out, too, and his four overs went for 51.Durham did not even manage nodding acquaintance with the target as they suffered one of their worst-ever defeats – and they have had some terrible years mixed in with some very good ones. They were dismissed for 117 inside 17 overs and that included opener Scott Steel’s spirited 58.James Faulkner’s third ball removed Short’s off stump and Maxwell ran out Ben Raine out with a direct from mid-on at the non-striker’s end as Durham ended the Powerplay feebly at 30 for 2.One wicket was particularly poignant. Matt Parkinson’s mother, Maria, had died suddenly last week and when Lancashire’s legspinner had Durham’s captain Stuart Poynter caught at short fine-leg he pointed to the sky in celebration before receiving hugs from all his team-mates. He is a fine prospect and given any sort of fair wind he will do her proud.

Latest Newcastle transfer news: Plans underway, Sean Rigg, Jonathan David

Football FanCast brings you the latest Newcastle United transfer round-up.

The Magpies followed the trend of most of the Premier League in January as they opted not to bring a single new face in. Though, you can understand why after seeing Everton get slapped with a 10 point deduction for falling foul of FFP.

So, it's now all eyes on the summer transfer window, with reinforcements needed at St James' Park as things haven't exactly gone to plan thus far.

Latest Newcastle United transfer rumours

Newcastle United 2023/24 transfers

PIF properly emptied their wallet in the summer, as the likes of Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento all joined for over £100m.

But, things soon turned sour as Tonali was found guilty of breaching betting rules and handed a 10 months suspension.

Arsenal signing celebrated by Ian Wright ended up being worse than Mustafi

Arsenal's resurgence as a force in the Premier League over the last few years has been built upon a succession of generally successful transfer windows.

Mikel Arteta and Edu have, more often than not, got it right in the market over the last few years.

That said, you don't have to go too far back to find a period in history in which the Gunners kept making costly mistakes, with perhaps Shkodran Mustafi being a name that sticks out in fans' minds.

shkodran-mustafi-arsenal-wenger-arteta-emery-transfer-valencia-waste-wage

However, there was a player that the club signed in the summer of 2018 who was arguably a bigger flop than the German – and he was free.

Stephan Lichtsteiner at Arsenal

The player in question is Swiss veteran and Juventus legend Stephan Lichtsteiner, who made the surprise switch to Arsenal in June 2018 after his contract with the Old Lady expired.

Lichtsteiner had just come off of a Serie A-winning campaign with Juventus – as he had every season he was at the club – and so there was quite a bit of expectation that he would be able to carry over some of his know-how and no-nonsense style to an Arsenal side who had just seen Arsène Wenger leave the club after 22 years at the helm.

Gunners legend Ian Wright welcomed the arrival of the experienced right-back, tweeting, "Great business by the club. Loving what's happening at Arsenal." In all, it certainly looked like an intelligent bit of business to sign a player with a remarkable history of winning league titles, especially with the upheaval the Gunners were enduring at the time.

However, as most Arsenal fans will tell you, the former Lazio ace's time in north London did not go quite as swimmingly as most were expecting – to put it mildly.

In all, he made 23 appearances for Unai Emery's side in the 2018/19 season – 19 of which were starts – registered just two goal involvements and, in his 14 Premier League appearances, he won just six games and averaged a match rating of 6.27, as per WhoScored.

Whether it was his age or just a lack of preparedness, the man who had been one of the best defenders in Italy for years just looked utterly out of his depth in English football, with former Arsenal player Alex Scott claiming he was "all over the place" in one particular outing against Manchester City.

Stephan Lichtsteiner's post-Arsenal career

With the writing firmly on the wall, the then-35-year-old left the club in the summer of 2019 and joined Bundesliga outfit FC Augsburg.

Unfortunately, however, he didn't fare much better in Germany and made just 17 starts across the 2019/20 season, although he did manage to help the club just about stave off relegation, as they finished in 15th place on 36 points.

Ultimately, while fans might label the £35m signing of Mustafi as the worst transfer in Arsenal's history – and not without reason – Lichtsteiner's time in N5 will always feel more disappointing.

After all, the German, for all of his nightmare-inducing antics at the back, did help the club win two FA Cups, playing every game up to the semi-finals in 2017 and then playing 87 minutes of the semi-final against City in 2020, a game the club won 2-0.

So, while he was never good enough to play for the club, his 151 appearances, two FA Cups and a Community Shield constitute a legacy the Swiss full-back simply doesn't have in N5.

Thankfully, such additions now look resigned to the past in the Arteta era…

Spurs eyeing late Gallagher alternative who’s "similar to Bellingham"

Tottenham Hotspur have already acted swiftly and efficiently to get their business done early this month, with Ange Postecoglou overseeing the signings of Ragu Dragusin and Timo Werner from Genoa and RB Leipzig, respectively, in recent times.

Those two deals have helped to bolster the Greek-Aussie's options at opposite ends of the pitch, although it is in the centre of the park where further bodies could still be needed, amid reports that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg could be on his way in the near future.

pape-sarr-pierre-hojbjerg-tottenham-opinion

With just over 24 hours left to run in the winter window, rumours are rife that the north Londoners could seek to prise Conor Gallagher from rivals Chelsea, although the Englishman seemingly isn't the only exciting midfield talent who may be on his way to N17.

Spurs eyeing Conor Gallagher alternative

The Guardian reportedly earlier this week that Spurs are considering a move for Gallagher – who was the subject of interest from Postecoglou over the summer – and that the Blues are willing to listen to offers for the 23-year-old, albeit with a £50m price tag having been touted.

With that in mind, Spurs could look elsewhere in order to strengthen their midfield ranks, with Swedish journalist Anel Avdić revealing that reported Barcelona target Lucas Bergvall has made a visit to Tottenham's training ground in recent times.

Spurs eyeing last-gasp bid to sign their own Kudus

Ange Postecoglou have been linked with another attacker in the window’s closing stage.

ByAngus Sinclair Jan 31, 2024

This comes following reports that an unnamed Premier League club had lodged an €8m (£7m) offer for the Djugardens starlet, with it perhaps the case that is the Lilywhites who have made their move for the 17-year-old.

Lucas Bergvall's style of play

Unsurprisingly, the teenager is only in the infancy of his senior career in his native Sweden, having made just 29 first-team appearances for his current side to date, after previously featuring 12 times for former club, Brommapojkarna – prior to departing last year.

That offers limited data for those at N17 to assess, although the indication is that Bergvall would be a worthy alternative to Gallagher, having notably chipped in with three goals and one assist in 28 games last term – the Chelsea man also providing three goals and one assist in 2022/23.

A potentially more long-term and affordable option for Postecoglou and co than Gallagher, the one-cap Swede also boasts the benefit of his sky-high potential, with data analyst Ben Mattinson even going as far as to suggest that he is "similar to [Jude] Bellingham" in a way, due to his ability to feature in a variety of midfield roles.

Bellingham is, of course, currently shining at Real Madrid with 18 goals and eight assists to his name already this season, having previously mirrored Bergvall in bursting onto the scene at the age of just 16 during his time at Birmingham City.

victor-osimhen-jude-bellingham-liverpool-opinion

The towering Englishman appears to have that gift for being able to glide up the pitch from a deeper role while also feeding others with an incisive forward pass, showcased by the fact that he ranks in the top 17% among his European peers for successful take-ons per 90, as well as in the top 1% for progressive passes per 90.

Such traits appear to be shared by the even younger Bergvall, with Mattinson stating previously: "Bergvall is a strong ball carrier and good at dribbling in tight spaces. He loves to progress play either through carrying the ball or his top passing ability."

While the 6 foot 1 gem has a long way to go if he is to be able to emulate the 2023 Golden Boy winner, such comparisons bode well for the impact he could make under Postecoglou's watch, thus making him a worthy target to consider in place of the costly Gallagher.

England quietly confident in Steven Smith's absence

Big picture

After eight consecutive Ashes Tests without a win, England come to Headingley full of confidence, while Australia, who can retain the urn with one win in the next three, are on the ropes. Welcome to Test cricket in 2019, where conventional wisdom is inverted. The mood around the respective teams owes much to two men. The first is Jofra Archer, the man Justin Langer had said Australia were planning to “keep wearing down, and get him back into his second or third and fourth spells,” before the second Test; in the event, Archer’s fifth spell in the first innings was the fastest of the Test, according to CricViz, and he ended not only with figures of 5 for 91 from his 44 overs, but having struck a psychological blow by striking both Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne with vicious bouncers. The second is Smith himself, who will miss the Leeds Test after suffering a delayed concussion from that Archer blow. The debate will roll on as to whether he should have been allowed to come back out to bat, but the cold hard facts are that Australia will be without the man who has scored 35 percent of their runs off the bat this series, despite missing one of their innings. In his absence, Tim Paine will be desperate for David Warner (18 runs at 4.50) and Usman Khawaja (91 at 22.75) to step up, while Cameron Bancroft is expected to be replaced by Marcus Harris.*But for all the doom, Australia have plenty with which they can reassure themselves. Labuschagne impressed with a determined effort in the fourth innings at Lord’s after being floored by the first legitimate ball he faced and looking horribly scratchy in the immediate aftermath, while Travis Head has quietly enjoyed an excellent start to the series. And they have plenty of recent experience of playing without Smith – if they were unconvincing without him in the home series against India, they still only lost it 2-1.Further, at a ground renowned for giving assistance to the seamers, their attack holds the edge over England’s. Pat Cummins is the leading wicket-taker in the series, and has given Jos Buttler in particular a torrid time: Cummins’ 59 balls to him have brought about the same number of scoring shots as dismissals (three each). James Pattinson is expected to replace Peter Siddle after being left out at Lord’s to ensure he was “cherry ripe”. That, despite Siddle having fond memories of Headingley after ripping through England there with 5 for 21 back in 2009.Incidentally, that Test was the last in the Ashes in Leeds, and while England have won two of their last three games there by an innings, they have also lost six of their last ten at the ground dating back to 2008.England, remember, have plenty of problems of their own. Trevor Bayliss admitted this week that Jason Roy – who has just 40 runs in four innings so far this series – “probably is suited to the middle order”, but it is expected that the attempt to turn him into a Virender Sehwag-style opener will continue this week. Joe Root failed in both innings at Lord’s, registering the first golden duck of his Test career in the second innings, and another difficult Test for him will surely result in a move back down the order.Joe Denly, meanwhile, has reached double figures in every innings, but has failed to pass 30, let alone 50; he knows that with Ollie Pope fit again, and on standby as a concussion replacement after making a Championship double hundred this week, he can hardly afford another underwhelming showing. The bowling attack is likely to be unchanged, though with Root’s captaincy under scrutiny after his perceived over-use of Archer last week Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad can expect to play bigger roles. Jack Leach has good memories of the ground after bowling Somerset to a Championship victory there in 2016 with 6 for 64, though spinners have averaged 34.87 at Tests in Leeds since 2014, compared to 30.94 for pace bowlers.

Form guide

England DLWWL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Australia DWWWD

In the spotlight

Jos Buttler said in the build-up to the Lord’s Test that he was “not far” from his best form, but with 49 runs in the series so far, he is yet to show it. There were hints during his second-innings 31 – in which he shifted down to number six, below Ben Stokes – of the player that excelled with the bat against India last summer, but he has not looked his usual free-scoring self, and it is even possible that he will be moved back to number seven at Headingley, below Jonny Bairstow, as England attempt to take the pressure off him. If, alongside those two, he can return to his best, then England’s engine room will start to look formidable rather than fragile.Smith has not only been Australia’s best batsman since returning from his ban, but also a constant presence in Tim Paine‘s ear when Australia have had decisions to make. While Paine will undoubtedly miss Smith’s runs, he might appreciate the lack of an assertive voice on the field, and relish the opportunity to be the side’s real leader again. Paine has been poor with the bat, repeatedly falling into England’s short-ball trap, and inopportune in his use of DRS thus far; with Alex Carey scoring twin fifties for Sussex this week, there is a growing sense that Paine must provide a reminder of what he brings to the side if he is to continue as captain for Australia’s home summer.

Team news

Despite Bayliss’ admission that Roy is probably better suited to the middle order, England are unlikely to make any changes to the order of their top four, and are expected to name an unchanged XI. Roy was hit on the helmet in the nets on Tuesday, and will be assessed once more before he is cleared to play. It seems likely he will still play, but his Surrey team-mate Ollie Pope is on standby if not, which would likely see Denly move up to open and Pope take his spot in the middle order. Stokes will continue at No. 5, while, Sam Curran’s run carrying the drinks is expected to continue, though England will consider bringing him in for Chris Woakes.England (probable): 1 Jason Roy, 2 Rory Burns, 3 Joe Root (capt), 4 Joe Denly, 5 Ben Stokes, 6 Jos Buttler, 7 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Jofra Archer, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 Jack Leach.Marcus Harris’ expected inclusion for Cameron Bancroft would mean five of Australia’s top six are left-handers, alongside Warner, Usman Khawaja, Travis Head and Matthew Wade. James Pattinson for Peter Siddle appears the other likely change for Australia, with Marnus Labuschagne already set to take Steven Smith’s place at No. 4.Australia (probable): 1 David Warner, 2 Marcus Harris, 3 Usman Khawaja, 4 Marnus Labuschagne, 5 Travis Head, 6 Matthew Wade, 7 Tim Paine (capt & wk), 8 Pat Cummins, 9 James Pattinson, 10 Josh Hazlewood, 11 Nathan Lyon.

Pitch and conditions

Headingley’s reputation as an archetypal English ground is unlikely to change with this Test, as the pitch has some grass on it and should provide some level of assistance for the seamers. Since 2009, seamers have taken 246 wickets in Tests at the ground, compared to just 52 for spinners, though slow bowlers have enjoyed some level of success as games have worn on and wickets have deteriorated. After rain threatened to wreck the second Test, this week should be much better. Light rain is forecast for the night before the game, and there will be plenty of cloud cover on the first two days, but the sun should manage to peek through by Saturday. There is barely a ticket going for the first four days, though there are plenty spare for day five on Monday.

Stats that matter

  • England have lost six of their last ten Tests at Headingley, and haven’t beaten Australia at the venue since 2001.
  • This will be the first Ashes Test in Leeds since 2009.
  • This is only the second time in David Warner’s Test career that he has registered four consecutive single-figure scores.
  • Jason Roy averages 17.00 in three ODI innings at Headingley – his lowest ODI average at any English ground.
  • Not since 1997 has a side gone into a third Ashes Test winless and gone on to win the series.

Quotes

“It changes a lot of batters’ approach towards our attack as well. It brings a number of the other guys more in the game, if you like, in a strange way. It is great to see him come into Test cricket and have such an impact. I’m sure he’ll make for some tasty viewing this Test match as well.”
Joe Root, England’s captain, is looking forward to letting Jofra Archer off the leash.“You don’t sit and tell people how to bat, we’ve spoken about out processes as players, making sure you’re well planned and well prepared. That’s all you can do, when you go out in the middle it’s about watching the ball and reacting to it. We know going into this Test that we’re going to be very well prepared and very well planned. So that’s all you can do.”

FSG plotting to bring "remarkable" Jorg Schmadtke replacement to Liverpool

Liverpool are interested in appointing a "remarkable" individual as the club's new sporting director after Jorg Schmadtke, according to an exciting new update.

Liverpool eyeing backroom additions

It's going to be all change at Anfield come the end of the season, with Jurgen Klopp's shock decision to leave as manager set to create a gaping void. His entire backroom team will also move on, including assistant manager Pep Lijnders.

It remains to be seen who will replace the legendary German as Reds boss this summer, but Xabi Alonso has arguably emerged as the favourite to take charge, as he continues to work wonders with Bayer Leverkusen this season.

Others are also believed to be in the mix, including Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, but nothing too concrete has emerged yet regarding the decision.

Away from the managerial situation, Liverpool also need to find a new sporting director, with Schmadtke leaving at the end of January, following a short stint in the role after replacing Julian Ward.

Liverpool identify new sporting director

According to Football Insider, Liverpool want to bring Bayer Leverkusen managing director Simon Rolfes to the club this summer, along with Alonso, after the pair have "stunned" onlookers in Germany.

"Liverpool are plotting to bring Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso and sporting director Simon Rolfes to the club in a sensational double swoop, sources have told Football Insider. It is believed that the duo are at the top of the Merseysiders’ list as they shortlist replacements for manager Jurgen Klopp and sporting director Jorg Schmadtke.

"Well-placed sources have told Football Insider that Liverpool are keen to snap up the pair key to the stunning transformation of the Bundesliga side."

This is such exciting news for Liverpool, considering how brilliantly Alonso and Rolfes are working together currently, inspiring Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga table. When Klopp leaves, the importance of nailing not only the managerial appointment but also other backroom additions cannot be downplayed, with wrong choices potentially setting the club back years.

Rolfes looks to be an ideal candidate to be the next sporting director at Anfield, not only because of his relationship with Alonso, but due to his own expertise in his own role. He has been hailed by Leverkusen chairman Fernando Carro, who has said of him recently:

"Simon Rolfes has demonstrated a remarkable ability to blend his experience and qualities as a player with the challenges of modern professional football management."

Replacing Klopp is ultimately going to be incredibly difficult, considering he is one of the most influential figures in the history of Liverpool Football Club, but it does feel as though Alonso is the standout choice, especially given his ties to the Reds as a player.

Liverpool's "special" star must step up beside Salah after Jota blow

Jurgen Klopp’s side are flying but there is mounting concern over the recent spate of injuries.

If they can snap him up and bring Rolfes with him, it should stand Liverpool in good stead to enjoy as seamless a transition as possible without Klopp around, ensuring that the club don't go backwards.
