NO FIM, TUDO IGUAL

Hojbjerg replaces Bissouma in two changes for Spurs’ predicted lineup vs Everton

Tottenham Hotspur return to London in the Premier League this weekend to welcome Everton, having defeated struggling Nottingham Forest at the City Ground last time out.

The three points claimed on the road made it successive victories in the English top flight after an emphatic performance against Newcastle United convincingly ended a dismal run of form.

Everton might have been hit with a ten-point deduction earlier in the campaign but have been immense under Sean Dyche's stewardship and technically sit tenth in the division, based on performance.

Tottenham bid to sign "complete" player now "ready", finances no issue

He’s been in great form this season.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 22, 2023

The Toffees have won four successive matches but will face a tough task in defeating Ange Postecoglou's side down the N17, though Spurs do have a mountain of injuries and absences to contend with.

Football FanCast predicts that Postecoglou will be forced into making two alterations, with Yves Bissouma and Destiny Udogie both suspended for the forthcoming fixture.

1 GK – Guglielmo Vicario

Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Guglielmo Vicario has started all 17 of Tottenham's league matches this season after signing from Italian side Empoli for an initial £17m in the summer and shall do so once again tomorrow afternoon, having proved to be a successful acquisition thus far.

2 RB – Pedro Porro

leo-black-pedro-porro-tottenham-opinion

Pedro Porro could probably stake a good claim for Tottenham's player of the season so far, with his all-encompassing performances down the right channel immensely important for the fluency and fear factor of the London squad.

The Spaniard has posted five assists from 16 displays in the top flight this term, with no defender in the division surpassing his 48 successful tackles made in 2023/24.

3 CB – Cristian Romero

sebastian-caceres-cristian-romero-tottenham-opinion

Cristian Romero is one of the best, most menacing defenders on English shores, yet he's also one of the most reckless, having been a large part of Spurs' disciplinary problems this season.

The aggressive titan will be crucial in nullifying the Everton attacking threat, however, with Dyche's side robust and combative and ready for a physical battle.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 14% of centre-halves across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 16% for pass completion, the top 18% for progressive passes, the top 6% for tackles and the top 18% for blocks per 90.

4 CB – Ben Davies

Spurs defender Ben Davies.

With Micky van de Ven still sidelined and Eric Dier untrusted under Postecoglou's management, left-back Ben Davies has been starring in central defence and doing a decent job, having started the past six matches.

5 LB – Emerson Royal

Emerson Royal

Udogie's fifth booking of the season has precluded his availability this weekend, meaning Emerson Royal will return to left-back for the third time this season, with Davies occupied in the centre of defence.

Branded a "liability" by talkSPORT's Jamie O'Hara for his dismal displays before the summer, the dynamic Brazilian has improved this term and produced some solid performances to aid Postecoglou's injury crisis over the past few months.

6 CM – Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

eric-dier-pierre-hojbjerg-tottenham-opinion

With Bissouma picking up his second red card of the campaign last time out, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will deputise in the Malian's absence.

While the Dane is possibly not progressive enough for Postecoglou's system, he is a seasoned and industrious Premier League player and will work well in the centre of the park, keeping things tidy.

7 CM – Pape Matar Sarr

Tottenham Hotspur midfielderPape Matar Sarr.

Pape Matar Sarr is a bit like the cement holding a towering edifice together: without him, it falls apart. Three of Spurs' five matches in the winless run were contested without him in the starting line-up; since his return, his side have clinched two wins from two.

Awestruck by the 21-year-old's performance against Newcastle earlier in December, reporter Ben Haines said: "Ridiculous how much of a difference Sarr makes. Reads dangerous situations so well, covers so much ground and makes everyone around him even better as well

8 RW – Brennan Johnson

Tottenham's Brennan Johnson.

Brennan Johnson was signed from Nottingham Forest for £47.5m in the summer but was withdrawn after just 30 minutes upon his return to the City Ground last time out.

The Wales international suffered a head injury but is thankfully okay and has trained as normal this week; his pace and trickery could be an invaluable tool against Everton.

9 AM – Dejan Kulusevski

Tottenham ace Dejan Kulusevski.

As per Sofascore, Dejan Kulusevski has scored five goals and supplied two assists across 17 Premier League outings this season, but that doesn't tell the whole story.

Thriving in a central role of late, the Swede has averaged 2.3 key passes and 4.3 ball recoveries per game, completing 83% of his passes and leading pundit Chris Sutton to dub him a "special player".

10 LW – Heung-min Son

richarlison-heung-min-son-tottenham-opinion

Heung-min Son has been as good as ever this season, providing the prolific brilliance to ensure that Harry Kane's summer sale has not ravaged the offensive verve.

Having scored ten goals across 17 Premier League appearances this season, the Lilywhites skipper is also one of the division's most devastating creative outlets.

Eoin Morgan cops one-ODI suspension for slow over-rate

England, 2-0 up in the five-match ODI series against Pakistan after three games, will be without Eoin Morgan when they take the field at Trent Bridge to try and wrap up the series, after their captain was suspended for one match for the team’s slow over-rate in the third ODI in Bristol. After batting first in Bristol, Pakistan finished on 358 for 9 and England crossed the mark with 31 balls remaining for a six-wicket win. After the game, England were deemed to be two overs short after time allowances were taken into consideration, and match referee Richie Richardson, in accordance with Article 2.22.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players, imposed the sanction.Morgan had been found guilty of a similar offence during the Barbados ODI against West Indies on February 22, and since this was the second such infraction within a 12-month period, he had to accept the ban as well as a fine of 40% of his match fee. The other members of the playing XI had to cough up 20% of their fees too.Jonny Bairstow, the Man of the Match for his 93-ball 128 in the chase, was also pulled up after the match. Paul Reiffel and Michael Gough, the on-field umpires for the game, and Chris Gaffaney, the third umpire, charged him with misconduct.Bairstow, after he was dismissed in the 29th over of the England innings, struck the stumps with his bat, and therefore breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code, which relates to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international match”.One demerit point has been added to Bairstow’s disciplinary record – it was his first offence since the introduction of the revised Code in September 2016.The fourth ODI will be played on Friday, and the final game is scheduled for Headingley on May 19.

Wolves could replace Kalajdzic by signing the "next Mbappe"

Wolverhampton Wanderers face a replay against Brentford in their FA Cup third-round clash after drawing the first tie 1-1, but it is clear the Old Gold need some new firepower following Hwang Hee-Chan’s departure to represent South Korea in the Asian Cup.

Gary O’Neil could be ready to delve into the transfer market with the January transfer window in full swing and the need for a striker has heightened following Sasa Kalajdzic’s loan move to German side Eintracht Frankfurt, leaving him short of options in attack.

Players to watch at AFC Asian Cup 2023

From South Korean all-stars to some under-the-radar talents, Football FanCast features a list of players who could light up Qatar in January.

ByMax Bradfield Jan 7, 2024 Wolves transfer news – Hugo Ekitiké

According to French outlet Le 10 Sport (via Sport Witness), Wolves have reportedly ‘accelerated behind the scenes’ to sign striker Hugo Ekitiké from Paris Saint-Germain.

The French side are ready to part with the player during the January transfer window, either on loan or permanently, and this could suggest O’Neil is prepared to make a swoop for the youngster.

The only stumbling block would be matching the wages that he is currently earning at PSG. Ekitike secured a massive increase when he joined the capital club and Wolves may not have the financial capabilities to match this.

The player is currently valued at €15.7m (£13.5m) according to Football Transfers and this means O’Neil has to move a few players on to raise funds for the move, as he could be an ideal replacement for Kalajdzic.

Hugo Ekitiké’s career statistics

The 21-year-old enjoyed his breakthrough campaign at Stade Reims during 2021/22 where he ended up scoring ten Ligue 1 goals and chipping in with four assists. His talent clearly impressed Newcastle United, who were keen on bringing him to the Premier League in January 2022.

Journalist Graeme Bailey was the one to claim that the Magpies were in advanced talks with Reims over the transfer of the young striker, while also heaping praise on him, saying: “Outstanding talent – huge signing for Newcastle if they get it done, many in France believe he could be the next Mbappe.”

High praise indeed, yet the proposed move to England never materialised, and he joined PSG that summer. Yet, it was always going to be tough fighting it out with the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Neymar for game time.

He didn’t do badly considering the circumstances, ranking fifth among the squad for goals and assists (seven) in Ligue 1, along with ranking fourth for shots on target per game (0.5) and fifth for scoring frequency (a goal every 385 minutes), finishing behind the acclaimed triumvirate in those metrics.

Hugo Ekitike

This season, however, Ekitike has fallen out of favour, featuring for a paltry eight minutes in the French top flight, and it is clear that a fresh start is required if he hopes to kickstart his career.

Kalajdzic managed to find the back of the net only three times before sealing a temporary switch away from the Midlands and there is no doubt the young French hitman could prove to be a wonderful replacement.

The Old Gold will be eyeing a spot in the top half of the table and a move for Ekitike could give them some freshness in that area of the squad.

Spurs given Roony Bardghji transfer hope as player jets to England

Tottenham Hotspur have been named as "big" contenders to sign one club's "exceptional" player – and he's even in England right now.

Spurs make transfer plans for January

The north Londoners have made no secret of their desire to bring in fresh faces next month, with manager Ange Postecoglou already admitting that Spurs are working hard on January signings behind the scenes.

"It is challenging, [but] the reason [we want to do business early] is obviously where we're at injury-wise and the players we're going to miss," said Postecoglou to Standard Sport last week.

Levy could meet asking price to sign star new centre-back target for Spurs

"We've got some significant games in January and signing somebody late in the month could mean they haven't been able to make an impact in those games.

"We're pushing hard, but you need all parties to agree. Other clubs, particularly if it's players they want [to keep], will be wanting to hold on to them for as long as possible for their own reasons through January.

"It is a challenge, I get that, but everyone at the club is working hard to get the best outcomes for us and we’ll see how it goes."

A centre-back is rumoured to be the club's top priority next month, leading to Spurs talks over signing Jean-Clair Todibo from Nice. Meanwhile, it's also believed Postecoglou is keen to add another midfielder and forward to his ranks (The Athletic).

There have been many wingers linked in the last month alone, including Juventus wingers Samuel Iling-Junior and Matias Soule. Tottenham are targeting both Iling-Junior and Soule ahead of January, according to reports, but Swedish wonderkid Roony Bardghji is another player on their radar.

The 18-year-old, who scored against Man United in FC Copenhagen's historic 4-3 win over the Red Devils earlier this term, has already set his name alight in the Champions League.

Nicknamed the 'Swedish Messi', he's seen as one of his country's hottest prospects right now, and recent reports suggest that Spurs have held talks with Bardghji's agents (90min).

Copenhagen are apparently prepared to green-light his sale next month, though he won't actually leave Denmark till the end of 2023/24.

Spurs now "big" suitors for Bardghji

According to Danish news outlet BT, sharing an update on Bardghji's situation, Spurs are "big" contenders to sign Bardghji and the young winger is even in London right now.

It is unclear whether his trip to England is related to any proposed transfer, with Chelsea also firmly in the race to seal a deal for him.

Kobenhavn forward Roony Bardghji.

The teenager's possible move away is certainly one to watch, though, as he could break the record for any previous Danish Super League transfer according to BT.

"He has an understanding of the game, as well as good balance and coordination," said his coach at under-17 level for Sweden, Roger Franzen (via The Mail).

"He has exceptional technique with the ball at his feet. It's incredibly difficult to take the ball off him. He is good one-on-one and has a good shot. He can shoot with both feet, even if he is basically left-footed, he can finish with the right as well."

Chance for Chelsea to sign striker who’s determined to explore London move

Chelsea are said to be approached over potentially signing Juventus striker Moise Kean, as Mauricio Pochettino's side now come towards the latter stages of January.

Chelsea scouring market for striker

Since the beginning of the month and beforehand, Chelsea have been repeatedly linked with signing a new centre-forward.

Star options like Napoli star Victor Osimhen, Brentford striker Ivan Toney, Brighton’s Evan Ferguson, Stuttgart’s Serhou Guirassy, Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko have all been linked at various points, but thus far, a move has failed to materialise.

Chelsea are among the English top flight's lowest scoring sides this season, and the west Londoners will certainly have to change that if they're to salvage a potential European qualification place.

Pochettino himself refused to rule out the possibility of January signings, but time is now running out for him to bring a striker through the door.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

"The Sporting Director and us, we are always talking and assessing – if we need to do something, we'll be ready," said Pochetttino on possible Chelsea transfers.

"The pressure is always to bring young talent, and we have different types of targets – with experience, without experience, some younger than others and that's what it takes to provide the team with what it needs.

"We need to be open to describing the situation. Always communication is really good with the owners, we're sharing everything. It's about sharing ideas; we need each other to express our vision in a way that's a positive statement for the club. If we need to add, we do it together, in a way that takes the best decision for the club."

Chelsea's top goalscorer right now is summer signing Cole Palmer with nine in the league, and while he's been an undoubted success, they're arguably in need of a classic number nine who can consistently poach inside the penalty area and link up play.

Cole Palmer

New names are coming into the fold as potential options, and it is now suggested that the west Londoners are set to be offered former Everton star Kean.

Kean determined to explore London move

As per journalist Dean Jones, writing for Sportslens, Chelsea will be made aware of Kean's availability as Juventus give the green-light for him to look for another club. The Italy international is particularly interested in a move back to England, and specifically the capital, with Kean "very determined" to explore a move to London above all.

There, Chelsea, Arsenal and West Ham are all actively pursuing new forward options. Pochettino's side are one of the teams who are set to be approached over Kean, though it's believed to be a less likely destination for him.

The 23-year-old's best goalscoring return came during the 2020/2021 season with PSG, where he netted 13 in 26 appearances for the Parisiens before making the move to Goodison.

Celtic could sign 23 y/o midfielder for Rodgers in January after talks held

Celtic are on the hunt for new additions and now have a good chance of being able to complete a deal for a reported target this month, according to a reliable journalist.

Celtic look for extra bodies in January…

It is well known that Brendan Rodgers is keen to ensure additional bodies arrive at Parkhead this month to help boost his side's hopes of securing a third Scottish Premiership title in quick succession.

Despite having to wait for all of 16 days, Hoops supporters finally got their first taste of action in the transfer window earlier this week as Nicolas Kuhn arrived from Rapid Vienna on a five-and-a-half-year contract and the former Germany Under-20 international will be expected to provide trickery in the wide areas.

Planning ahead for the rest of the month, the Hoops could now look to target a striker and a left-back in the closing stages of the market, alongside shifting several fringe players out of the club.

Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph delivered a brief summary of potential incomings and outgoings at Parkhead, stating on social media platform X: "Celtic are now focusing efforts to bring in a LB & ST before the end of the transfer window. Permanent deals would be preferable, but loan targets may be more achievable. GK situation is also being assessed, but more likely to be addressed in the summer."

He then added: "The Hoops are open to offers for Gustaf Lagerbielke, Alexandro Bernabei, James McCarthy & Rocco Vata. Vata is out of contract in the summer and is already in talks with Bologna & Como. Yuki Kobayashi and Marco Tilio are also likely to leave on loan this month."

Rodgers could supercharge Palma as Celtic eye swoop for £2.8k-p/w whiz

ByDan Emery Jan 17, 2024

Midfield could also become an area of concern as doubt is cast over David Turnbull's future at the Scottish giants, and one media outlet now claim an arrival in the engine room could be on the cards to bolster Celtic's engine room this month.

Celtic hold Jung Ho-Yeon talks

As per reliable Daily Record reporter Scott Burns, Celtic have held talks with Gwangju FC midfielder Jung Ho-Yeon over a move to Parkhead and it is believed that there is a 'good chance' that any potential deal could move further down the line this window.

Nonetheless, it is believed that his current employers would be keen to keep him in his homeland until the summer. Scouting missions have been taking place since last year regarding the 23-year-old as Celtic look to gain a clear picture of what he could bring to the table in the middle of the park.

Labelled a "very good prospect" by Asian football expert Dario Focardi, the Mokpo-born shuttler made 34 appearances in 2023 across all competitions, registering two goals and three assists (Jung statistics – Transfermarkt).

Loanee Kwon Hyeok-kyu, winger Yang Hyun-jun and striker Oh Hyeon-gyu form a three-man Korean contingent in Glasgow and Rodgers could well be in the process of acquiring a fourth player from the nation to play a part in the second half of the season.

Surrey embarrassed by heavy opening defeat against Gloucestershire

Chris Liddle and Tom Smith claimed three wickets each as Gloucestershire skittled Surrey for just 88

Chris Liddle and Tom Smith claimed three wickets each as Gloucestershire skittled Surrey for just 88 to win their opening Royal London One-Day Cup match at Bristol by 147 runs. The home side were bowled out for 235 after winning the toss, having been 156 for one, with Chris Dent and Gareth Roderick the main contributors, while Rikki Clarke and Tom Curran shared seven wickets. It looked a below par total. But Surrey turned in a hapless batting display, Jason Roy top-scoring with 19 as they were bowled out in only 24 overs.Liddle finished with 3 for 17 and left-arm spinner Smith 3 for 7 from two overs. Tightly as Gloucestershire bowled, it was an abject display by the visiting batting line-up.The game was played in bright sunshine on a slow pitch. Surrey made a quick breakthrough when George Hankins chased a wide delivery from Clarke and edged through to wicketkeeper Ben Foakes. The best batting of the day followed as, having taken time to assess the pace of the pitch, Dent and Roderick played with increasing freedom.Skipper Dent was first to his half-century, off 62 balls, with four fours and a pulled six off Clarke, and Roderick soon followed, off 65 deliveries, having struck seven boundaries. The pair were making batting look easy, Roderick having lofted Liam Plunkett over midwicket for six, when they fell in quick succession. Dent skied a catch to mid-on off Clarke to end a stand of 152 in 25 overs and the next over saw Roderick miscue to mid-off to give Curran his first wicket. The collapse that followed was a major surprise. Soon Gloucestershire were 171 for 5, with Ian Cockbain bowled off stump by Gareth Batty and Jack Taylor stumped attempting to swing Will Jacks’ offspin into the leg side. Benny Howell and Ryan Higgins added 43 for the sixth wicket before falling to Clarke and Curran respectively and there was little contribution from the tail as Gloucestershire were bowled out inside 48 overs.Tom Smith appeals for a wicket•Getty Images

Surrey looked strong favourites at halfway, but never recovered from losing Mark Stoneman to the third ball of their innings, bowled by Dan Worrall with a ball that nipped back off the seam. It was the start of a sorry procession, Liddle removing three of the top five in Roy, Rory Burns and Foakes, while Jacks, on 17, dislodged his leg bail attempting to pull Worrall as Surrey slumped to 61 for 5.There was simply no resistance as Howell had Ollie Pope caught behind down the leg side for 13, Clarke was bowled by Higgins and Smith polished off the tail by sending back Curran, Batty and Plunkett in the space of 11 balls. The speed with which the match ended caught everyone by surprise and Surrey – three times finalists in this competition between 2015 and 2017 – were left to reflect an opening group performance that was little short of embarrassing.Surrey head coach Michael Di Venuto was disappointed by his side’s performance.”It would be nice to start this competition well, but we have made a habit of doing the opposite in recent years,” Di Venuto said. “It was a particularly disappointing batting performance. We had a bit of bad luck with a few of the dismissals, strangles down the leg-side and a hit-wicket, but in general we didn’t adapt to the sort of pitch we were playing on.”Hopefully, we have got this out of our systems early and we will be looking to put things right quickly against Sussex at Hove on Friday.”
