Sunderland could forget Still by appointing EFL boss who plays "similar system"

As Sunderland near closer to this weekend's matchup with West Brom, the Black Cats supporters are still none the wiser as to who their next manager will be.

Tony Mowbray's surprise dismissal from the Stadium of Light hot-seat has divided fans of the Championship club, Sunderland had come back from the footballing brink they had found themselves in recent years to now only be three points shy of the playoff spots under the 60-year-old's management.

It's a sign of how ambitious the powers that be at Sunderland truly are, wanting to bring in a fresh manager instead with new ideas to push the Black Cats even further up the league standings.

Their desired man could even be a boss who is currently in work in the Championship, Plymouth Argyle manager Steven Schumacher one of many targets on the Black Cats short-list.

Sunderland manager latest

Sunderland's hunt for a new manager continues on, with Will Still, Kieran McKenna and Julien Sable amongst many other names linked with the second-tier job.

A new frontrunner for the vacancy could well be Schumacher, the 39-year-old continues to work wonders down in Devon with Plymouth even with the Pilgrims having to navigate the tricky step-up to Championship football this campaign.

Before his plucky side face off against league leaders Leicester this Saturday, the 39-year-old boss did comment on the rumours in the pre-match press conference stating that it must be a sign that "you're doing something good in your job" to be in the running for "top jobs."

Not hiding his admiration for the Black Cats by acknowledging the stature of the club, Sunderland chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus will hope he can tempt Schumacher to take the job with his style at Plymouth currently fitting the promotion hopefuls perfectly.

Steven Schumacher's managerial style at Plymouth

The Liverpool-born boss could be the managerial appointment the Sunderland attackers need to wake up and start firing the goals in, Schumacher's Plymouth sides renowned for their gung-ho style of play going forward.

Last season, on their way to being crowned League One champions, the Pilgrims scored 82 goals with the likes of Ryan Hardie and Morgan Whittaker electric up top for the eventual title winners.

This campaign, Schumacher's men have made the step-up to the second tier look easy – scoring 31 times already from just 19 games played, which included hitting Norwich City for six unexpectedly in mid-September in a stand-out 6-2 victory.

The Argyle manager has even compared the way he sets his teams up at Home Park to Sunderland's similarly easy-on-the-eye approach, stating before the two teams met earlier in the season that:

"They (Sunderland) play a similar system to us, they commit loads of bodies forward and like to attack. That's what we do."

Five managers Sunderland could turn to after sacking Tony Mowbray

Sunderland unexpectedly relieved Mowbray of his duties last night, with a number of managers now rumoured for the Stadium of Light vacancy.

ByKelan Sarson Dec 5, 2023

It could be a managerial change that is seamless therefore if the Black Cats manage to tempt Schumacher to leave Devon behind for pastures new, putting rumours that they could appoint Stade De Reims boss Still to bed.

With the latter man not boasting experience in the EFL to date, perhaps turning to Schumacher could represent a wise alternative.

Aston Villa have a teenage sensation who has outscored Watkins this term

Aston Villa’s recent Premier League win over Fulham was their eighth of the current season, and they are just three points from table toppers Manchester City.

It's fair to say Unai Emery has got Villa firing and there is no reason why they can’t challenge for a trophy this term, especially with the form of some of his players.

Douglas Luiz has been outstanding at the heart of the midfield, even chipping in with six goals and his form could be crucial to Villa achieving success this season.

New signing Moussa Diaby has also settled in at the club well, yet it is arguably Ollie Watkins who has been Emery’s key man.

Ollie Watkin’s season in numbers

The Englishman struggled under Steven Gerrard at the start of last season, yet when the Spaniard arrived, he ended up scoring 15 league goals, and he has carried that form into the current campaign.

Across 19 matches in all competitions, Watkins has managed to find the back of the net 11 times, while he has also shown his selfless side, grabbing five assists too.

Aston Villa'sOllieWatkinsreacts

The in-form striker not only ranks first in the squad for goals and assists (11), but he also tops the pile with regard to shots on target per game (1.3) and third for key passes per game (1.7), demonstrating how effective he has been this term.

Emery will be hoping he remains fit and healthy for the entirety of the season as much of Villa’s success will come down to him.

If something happens to the former Brentford frontman, however, the Midlands side do have a youngster who is thriving at youth level, and he’s even outscored Watkins – Rory Wilson.

Rory Wilson’s youth statistics

The highly-rated teen joined from Scottish side Rangers in July 2022 following a season where he scored a staggering 49 goals and Gerrard worked with him during his spell north of the border.

Scotland U16 coach James Grady dubbed Wilson as the player who always wants to be “the top goal scorer” and this ambition could stand him in good stead regarding a potential career in the Premier League.

His maiden season in England saw the Scot score 15 goals in just 20 matches, and he is looking on course to smash through that figure this term.

He has featured in just nine U18 Premier League matches so far, yet has plundered 15 goals in the process and this scintillating form will surely be attracting the attention of Emery.

Of course, making the step up from U18 level to the bright lights of the top flight is a mammoth jump in ability, yet the 17-year-old already looks at ease and if he continues to score on a regular basis, could the former Arsenal boss perhaps offer him a few cameo appearances in the coming months?

Much will depend on Villa’s fortunes in the weeks ahead, yet the feel-good factor at the club could allow Emery to blood several young talents with the prospect of giving them a run in the first team.

If he wants goals, Wilson is the man to call upon, there’s no doubt about that.

£300k-p/w Man Utd star proving to be just as bad as Antony

Time must now surely be wearing thin for Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

Of course, the Dutchman has had external forces hindering the club’s development this term but the fact of the matter is that results haven’t been good enough.

United are on the verge of exiting the Champions League after a comical 3-3 draw in midweek against Turkish opposition Galatasaray.

It was a result that typified their shoddiness in recent times, with a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday evening only exacerbating their problems.

This side couldn’t be further from the days of Sir Alex Ferguson if they tried. Being devoid of a ruthless streak in front of goal is one thing but the work rate is remarkably bad. This doesn’t look like a team willing to fight for the badge, let’s put it that way.

Man United’s worst player vs Newcastle

Take your pick. There certainly wasn't a lack of poor performers in red at St James’ Park this weekend.

For instance, it was down Diogo Dalot’s left flank that Kieran Trippier was able to exploit to lay the ball on a plate for Anthony Gordon’s winner with the Portuguese partially at blame for the loss.

However, the distinct lack of threat and indeed desire from some of those in attack must be questioned above all else.

Man Utd teen who's worth more than Mainoo deserves one last chance

The Red Devils have one teenage talent on their books who could still be deserving of a first-team opportunity.

ByRobbie Walls Dec 1, 2023

Last weekend against Everton it looked as though things had begun to click again. Anthony Martial picked up a confidence-boosting goal but you wouldn’t have thought it on this occasion.

Picked ahead of Rasmus Hojlund, the Frenchman barely had a kick in the northeast, leaving the pitch after 61 minutes having taken just 17 touches – 36 fewer than Andre Onana – and made only eight accurate passes. A torrid night indeed.

However, arguably even worse was Marcus Rashford. Last term the wide man was in exceptional form for the Red Devils, scoring 30 times in 56 outings. However, he has endured a distinctly poor 2023/24 campaign to date, finding the net on only two occasions from 18 matches. To make matters worse, one of those strikes was from the penalty spot.

The loss to Newcastle typified Rashford’s struggles in recent times, notably criticised for a lack of tracking back and a lack of effort.

Content creator Liam Canning was quick to notice this, suggesting the England international was “genuinely shocking” against the Magpies.

Indeed, when comparing him to the match-winner it becomes abundantly clear why. Having been withdrawn just after the hour mark by Ten Hag, the 26-year-old did so after completing just 65% of his 17 attempted passes.

Like Martial, there was a distinct lack of touches for Rashford, who took only 22 throughout the evening. What makes matters worse is that the England man didn’t register a single shot.

Manchester Evening News correspondent Samuel Luckhurst perhaps summed up his display best, writing: “Fortunate to start and he was poor in attack and slack in defence, offering Wan-Bissaka no protection. Should not have started”. That came as the reporter gave him a dismal 2/10 match rating.

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford.

Luckhurst is correct, however. Even with Antony on the bench, this felt like an incorrect call. The Brazilian is yet to register a single goal involvement this term but they have been just as bad as each other.

Both contribute very little in the final third and struggle to track back. Any degree of work rate or effort to help the team defensively is non-existent. If the £300k-per-week Rashford was scoring goals then this could probably be ignored. Sadly that is not the case. It’s time for the club’s number 10 to be given a spot on the bench.

Wolves academy star could beat Fabio Silva to Jimenez’s throne

Wolverhampton Wanderers have benefitted from the talent from their academy in recent years, with another star looking to be the next big thing at Molineux.

The £42.5m sale of graduate Morgan Gibbs-White handed the Old Gold a financial boost last summer, earning a significant profit from the Englishman that stormed through the academy to eventually catch alight on loan.

Now, Gary O’Neil could be close to harvesting Wolves’ next young star, with 18-year-old striker Nathan Fraser on the cusp of breaking through into the first team.

Nathan Fraser’s career so far

Starting his journey with the Midlands club at the age of seven, Fraser signed his first professional contract at Molineux in 2022 after excelling on his journey through the ranks in the academy.

The Ireland U19 international made a statement in the 2021/22 campaign, where he netted ten goals and claimed two assists in 24 appearances, with one goal coming in the Premier League 2, showcasing his ability to perform at a higher level than his age suggests.

Once lauded for his “dedicated” rise to prominence in the squad at Wolves by sporting director Matt Hobbs, the teenager has become a reliable source of goals in the club’s academy.

Last season, Fraser netted seven goals in 26 appearances, prompting a promotion to even higher levels, thanks to the promise O’Neil has seen in his progression.

How Nathan Fraser’s future at Wolves could look

In September, the 18-year-old was officially promoted to the first-team squad after scoring his first senior goal on his debut in the Carabao Cup in August.

Against Blackpool, the Wolverhampton-born sensation scored and assisted to show the manager first-hand what he can offer the squad, with his scoring record in the 2023/24 campaign continuing to impress in the academy.

With five goals in eight appearances this season, the teenager has outscored O’Neil’s star man Pedro Neto this term, reinforcing how deadly he can be when given a chance in the final third.

Nathan-fraser-wolves

Described as an “aggressive and strong” figure in attack by academy coach, Jonathan Hunter-Barrett, the future of Fraser at Molineux could be very bright, particularly when assessing the squad’s options to take the throne from departed goalscorer, Raul Jimenez – who joined Fulham over the summer after scoring 57 goals in 166 games for Wolves.

While Matheus Cunha’s goal-scoring ability is outweighed by his explosive nature to inspire positive passages of play, the teenager could surely battle fellow striker Fabio Silva for a place in the first team.

The Portuguese forward is still adapting to the pace and physicality of the English top flight, with his naivety in front of goal perhaps calling for another loan spell to lure him out of his shell.

With O’Neil’s support, Fraser could be in a position to become Molineux’s heir to Jimenez, with his goal-scoring prowess and suitability to the Premier League perhaps greater than that of the misfiring Silva.

Ange could sign a bigger talent than VDV with Spurs bid for £60m "tank"

Tottenham Hotspur supporters may be forgiven for feeling somewhat aggrieved after the events of recent weeks halted Ange Postecoglou's revolution in London.

While injuries and suspensions are simply part and parcel on the pitch, Spurs had built something special in the early weeks of the 2023/24 campaign and topped the Premier League table after ten matches, but a three-match skid has laid the squad's frailties bare.

Spurs could unleash 18 y/o "big talent" to fill Bentancur void

The stricken Lilywhites have been hit with an alarming number of injuries over recent weeks.

ByAngus Sinclair Nov 30, 2023

At this stage, it's not detrimental, with signs that Spurs could yet rekindle their verve over the winter period. That being said, the forthcoming football will need to be contested with absences to key stars: James Maddison and Micky van de Ven are ruled out until the new year, Cristian Romero is still suspended for Sunday's fixture against Manchester City, Rodrigo Bentancur is injured again and not expected back for several months.

As is clear, there's much to contend with for Postecoglou, and while his primary focus will be on navigating through the winter games to come, he will have one eye firmly fixed on the January transfer window, with defensive reinforcements paramount.

Tottenham transfer news – Marc Guehi

According to a report from 90min, Spurs are among the Premier League heavyweights to be tracking Crystal Palace's star centre-back Marc Guehi, with Chelsea Manchester United and Newcastle United all interested.

While it's understood that Chelsea are leading the race right now and keen on a reunion after selling him to the Eagles for £18m in 2020, Spurs' desperation in pursuit of new options could make for a compelling transfer battle.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

On their part, Palace are determined to reject any winter proposals for the England international – who would be happy to remain in south London as he fights for a place in Gareth Southgate's 2024 European Championship squad – and have slapped a £60m price tag on his signature.

Marc Guehi's style of play

It's probably fair to say that Spurs supporters won't be overly fussed with who's brought in to bolster the ranks so long as their style aligns and buttresses Postecoglou's lofty ambitions.

But in Guehi, the Lilywhites would land a truly remarkable talent and one who could improve the squad as it looks to return to European competition under Postecoglou's wing, fighting to end the lengthy trophy drought.

A composed and intelligent player, Guehi has started 12 times in the Premier League this season, completing 89% of his passes, averaging 1.2 tackles, one interception, 4.8 clearances and 5.3 ball recoveries per game, also completing 100% of his dribbles and 67% of his ground duels, as per Sofascore.

He also ranks among the top 14% of central defenders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref,

The nine-cap England star occupies the left slot in the central defence, which only strengthens the notion that Tottenham would be wise to secure his services, with the left-footed Van de Ven indeed sidelined indefinitely.

How Guehi would fit in at Tottenham

The £50k-per-week titan will have no regrets regarding his transfer to Selhurst Park several years ago, having now chalked up 96 appearances for Palace, scoring five goals.

He's been hailed as an "absolute tank" by former England under-21 teammate Josef Bursik and has earned the vested attention of some of England's top outfits after his sustained showings – with 90min's piece also noting Bayern Munich's interest.

While Palace have endured a mediocre campaign in the Premier League so far, Guehi has kept four clean sheets from 12 matches and there is a sense that he would take an exciting step in his development with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The table portrays Guehi's style with a notable semblance to the likes of Aston Villa and Newcastle United's defenders, which is interesting and underscores Guehi's formidable presence in the Premier League, boasting the tough, technical qualities to allow him to thrive in his homeland for many years to come.

When fully fit, Tottenham boast one of the division's meanest partnerships in Van de Ven and Romero, but with the untrusted Eric Dier out of contract at the end of the season, Guehi would be an excellent acquisition.

The 5 foot 11 ace could even surpass Van de Ven, with the Dutchman signing for Spurs from German side Wolfsburg for £43m in the summer and revolutionising the backline, having been described as "out of this world" by pundit Jamie Carragher.

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven

One of Europe's most athletic and energetic centre-halfs, Van de Ven ranks among the top 11% of positional peers for pass completion, the top 8% for progressive carries and the top 3% for successful take-ons per 90, showcasing such faculties.

But with Guehi performing at such an impressive level with Palace, he could even be eclipsed by the Englishman, who is wanted by all of the league's big guns.

In fairness, Van de Ven has been extraordinary since his summer introduction and has completed 95% of his passes, won 61% of his duels and averaged 1.6 tackles, 2.9 clearances and 5.4 ball recoveries per match.

Described as a “beast" at the back by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Palace's goal-stopping specialist really does fit the bill, offering a foil to serve on the left side of the defence in Van de Ven's absence while providing the more traditional style of defending, which would complement Spurs well given Romero's aggressive, tough-tackling proclivities.

Likened to phenom's such as Sven Botman, the sky is the limit for the 23-year-old, and Postecoglou must ensure that Chelsea and Manchester United do not get their mitts on his signature; adding him to the fold, Tottenham's resurgence would only gain steam.

The five managers Norwich City could hire if they sack David Wagner

David Wagner's days in the Norwich City hot seat could well still be numbered, even in spite of a comeback 3-2 win at Cardiff City this weekend.

The Canaries are performing way below pre-season expectations, promotion hopes in the summer now replaced by relegation fears with the underperforming Yellows sat in a lowly 16th spot in the Championship.

Norwich midfielder Kenny McLean.

There's plenty of potential managers waiting in the wings if Wagner is sacked to take over at Carrow Road, with one name even guiding his side into the Championship playoffs in a previous tenure.

Here are five names that could replace Wagner at Norwich…

1

Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard celebrates as Chelsea play in the Premier League.

Linked with the Norwich vacancy in the past – lined up for a managerial switch to Norfolk right up until Dean Smith was appointed in 2021 – Frank Lampard is back in the running at Carrow Road to be the next boss if Wagner is shown the door.

Lampard will want to return to management soon after a scathing experience in the Chelsea dug-out as caretaker boss, the ex-Stamford Bridge icon turned boss having his managerial credentials questioned in recent times.

His most successful patch as a manager was at second tier level with Derby County however, the ex-Rams man spearheading his exciting team boasting the likes of Mason Mount, Harry Wilson and Fikayo Tomori to within touching distance of an unlikely promotion – losing out at Wembley in the eventual playoff final to Aston Villa in 2019.

Could the 45-year-old be tempted by the Canaries vacancy if the opportunity presented itself?

2

Mark Robins

The hierarchy at Norwich could well look to a former Yellows great as a player to win back fans as the next potential manager, poaching Mark Robins from fellow Championship side Coventry City to return to Carrow Road.

Robins has performed wonders at the Sky Blues, taking the club from League Two all the way up to the second tier with last season seeing his plucky side lose out narrowly in the Championship playoff final on penalties to Luton Town.

It would be a monumental effort to prise the 53-year-old away from Coventry, but an effort worth undertaking to get Norwich back on track.

3

John Eustace

Birmingham City manager John Eustace.

Norwich could go for this recently sacked manager, John Eustace let go of by Birmingham City in bemusing circumstances however – the 44-year-old binned for Wayne Rooney to take over controversially.

Eustace was doing a commendable job at St Andrews before being dismissed to the dismay of Blues supporters, winning his final game 4-1 versus West Brom with Rooney then coming in and failing to win ever since.

The former Blues man deserves another crack at a second-tier job, with Norwich a possible next destination.

4

Scott Parker

scott-parker-championship-leeds-united-manager-news

Formerly of AFC Bournemouth and Fulham as a manager, Parker could well welcome a return to the English game as boss after a turbulent reign out in Belgium with Club Brugge – leaving the Jan Breydel Stadium with a dire 16.7% win percentage.

Still, the former West Ham player turned manager has achieved notable successes in the EFL with the Cherries and the Cottagers from the dug-out.

With two promotions on his resume from the second tier up to the top flight, before his time at both teams went pear-shaped in the Premier League, Norwich could look to the 43-year-old as an immediate option to guide the Canaries back into the promotion reckoning.

5

Chris Wilder

Chris Wilder

Bruised from successive poor stints in charge at both Watford and Middlesbrough, Wilder will want to show to everyone he still has the capabilities to be a fantastic manager at EFL level again.

His time at Sheffield United saw the 56-year-old revolutionise a downtrodden Blades outfit, taking the club from League One obscurity to an unprecedented ninth spot in the Premier League under his celebrated tenure.

For this alone, the ex-Blades boss' name will be floating about to replace Wagner if the German manager is put out of his misery.

Soft signal, hard luck, as Pakistan suffer more third-umpire woe

For the second time in as many Tests, Pakistan found their celebrations cut short by the third umpire after thinking they had made a crucial breakthrough. In almost identical fashion to Dean Elgar’s overturned dismissal in Centurion, which prompted such a fierce reaction from Mickey Arthur, Azhar Ali was once again the slip fielder in the spotlight as he stooped to gather Temba Bavuma’s outside edge.At Centurion, Bruce Oxenford had consulted with his on-field colleague S Ravi and deemed Azhar to have taken a clean catch as he gave a soft signal of ‘out’, and he did so once more here in Cape Town. This time, however, Ravi was the man in the third umpire’s chair, and after much deliberation, he decided that Azhar had failed to get his fingers fully underneath the ball. The decision was overturned, much to the crowd’s delight and Mickey Arthur’s chagrin.Arthur, Grant Flower and Sarfraz Ahmed had all said after Centurion they thought the incorrect decision had been made, with Arthur storming into the third umpire’s office to protest, earning himself a sanction and a demerit point. Here, however, he managed to restrain himself to his chair, though the frustration was evident on his face once more.Compare and contrast for yourself with ESPNcricinfo’s ball-by-ball commentary on the two incidents:8.5 Shaheen Shah Afridi to Elgar, no run, length, outside off, and draws the outside edge! It’s been taken by Azhar Ali, but they want to check this. The soft signal from the umpires is OUT! Superb ball, pitched in that length that drew him forward, took the outside of the bat as he poked at it, and flew low to Azhar’s right at first slip. He went low and gathered it, and seems to have done enough! He was confident immediately after completing the catch, and Elgar was also looking to walk to the change rooms immediately afterwards. I think the TV umpire will rule this in favour of the fielding side…OH NO? NOT OUT! That was close!43.3 Mohammad Abbas to Bavuma, no run, drags him out, locates the edge… and first slip snags a low catch! Or does he? Bavuma is going to hang around and wait for any hint of doubt. The soft signal from Bruce Oxenford is out, though this is a helluva tough one to call either way… Does the ball touch the grass as Azhar attempts to scoop it up? The third umpire, S Ravi, decides it does! So the decision is overturned and Bavuma gets a lifeAt Centurion, Elgar’s dismissal would have reduced South Africa to 16 for 2, chasing an awkward 149. At Cape Town, Bavuma’s wicket would have been Pakistan’s second in as many overs, and left them five-down and still 21 runs in arrears.
