Dos jogadores citados, apenas Lucas Barros chegou a jogar no time principal.

Became captain by default – Kumble

Anil Kumble, the former India legspinner, has said he was picked to lead the Test team owing to a lack of other options

Anil Kumble, the former India legspinner, has said he was picked to lead the Test team owing to a lack of other options. He had replaced Rahul Dravid at the helm in November 2007, when MS Dhoni was the ODI and T20 captain.”I became captain after playing 17 years for India, so probably I became captain by default,” Kumble told . “Rahul Dravid had just relinquished the captaincy and, at that time, it was perhaps too early for MS Dhoni to step in as Test captain. Sachin [Tendulkar] also did not want it so they looked around and said, ‘Okay Anil is the only guy and let’s give it to him.'”Kumble had played 118 Tests before he was given the captaincy. He led India for 14 Tests, winning three, losing five and drawing the remaining six. He began his tenure with a 1-0 series win over Pakistan and also led India to a memorable victory over Australia in Perth in 2008.”I was in the 17th year of my career and I knew that I would not play for long. It was a transition and I’d have to handle a team of former captains and the one-day captain,” he said.Kumble’s contribution was far more significant as as bowler. His 619 Test wickets is a record for India, but he said bowling was a difficult task.”As a bowler you are not a hero, you are always backing a hero, but you need 20 wickets to win a Test match. In India you pick teams based on pitches, so it’s the bowlers who get changed. If it is a turning pitch a fast bowler can’t play, and if it is a green pitch, a spinner can’t play.So you expect the batsmen to get accustomed or adapt to any kind of pitch whereas you don’t expect bowlers to adapt to conditions.”Among the highlights of his career was during the Antigua Test in 2002 when he played on through a broken jaw. He was hit by Mervyn Dillon, spat out blood but batted on for another 20 minutes. Then he got through 14 overs and claimed the wicket of Brian Lara.”Quite a few emotions were running through my head,” said Kumble regarding the incident, “Because I was just coming back from a shoulder injury and I was just coming into the team. I played the first Test match and then I was dropped for the second. I was given opportunity in the fourth test match. I had not played two Test matches so this was like a make or break for me.”

Can Pakistan end 20 years of hurt?

Pakistan can glimpse a first series win over Australia for more than 20 years, while Australia will seek to strike back in conditions they do not enjoy

The Preview by Daniel Brettig29-Oct-2014Match factsOct 30-Nov 3, 2014
Start time 10.00 local, 06.00 GMTBig PictureIn November 1994, Pakistan batted out day five of the third Test in Lahore to complete a 1-0 series victory over Australia. They did so despite surrendering first-innings leads in all three Tests, and despite the dual withdrawals of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis from the team for the deciding match. Their deliverer was the captain Saleem Malik, who mastered the previously rampant Shane Warne over the course of 557 series runs at 92.83. It appeared to have been a meeting between two teams set to dominate the next decade or more. But this only turned out to be true for Australia – Mark Taylor’s team would beat the West Indies the following year and establish a thirteen-year global supremacy. Their opponents would do something like the opposite.Twenty years and nine series later, Pakistan have weathered more storms than it is possible to mention here. Australia have commonly trampled all over them in the first Test of a series and then carried on to win. Not once in the intervening years have the sub-continental team had something to hang onto as the encounter developed – until now.The victory in Dubai was not simply a rousing result, for it was among the most complete Test match performances seen anywhere in recent times. After winning a key toss, Misbah-ul-Haq’s team soaked up the pressure applied by Mitchell Johnson and Peter Siddle before attacking Nathan Lyon and milking the more limited offerings of Steve O’Keefe. Rahat Ali, Imran Khan, Zulfiqur Babar and Yasir Shah then proceeded to tie Australia’s batsmen in familiar knots. Those knots had been glimpsed during the tour match, and it will take a major change of mindset to prevent them from returning in Abu Dhabi.Nonetheless, the biggest question this week will be how much Pakistan truly believe they can beat Australia, and how much Michael Clarke’s team are prepared to accept the prospect of being defeated by an opponent they have become so accustomed to swatting aside, even after the baggy green XI was no longer a gathering of giants. Twenty years is a long time, but so too are five days.Form guidePakistan WLLWL
Australia LWLWWIn the spotlightAs happens to many captains, consistent runs are growing increasingly difficult for Michael Clarke to attain. When he rebuked critics of his tour match form for noting that he made a brave century in Cape Town during Australia’s previous Test match, they might have responded that he went five matches without reaching 50 before that. Clarke’s usually nimble feet against spin were nowhere to be seen in Dubai, and he has taken up the Rahul Dravid gambit of batting without pads against Lyon and O’Keefe to try to get them moving in Abu Dhabi. There is not much Shane Warne and Steve Waugh agree on, but they have been rare unison when discussing the quality of Pakistan’s wrist spin debutant Yasir Shah. Spin, accuracy, subtle variation were all evident in his seven-wicket display, and on an Abu Dhabi surface that may not turn as much as Dubai, the extra revolutions imparted by Yasir’s wrist may give him a useful edge over the finger twirlers. Australia, though, will be wiser this time, leaving Pakistan to discover how their new find can cope with greater scrutiny and expectation this time around.Teams newsMohammad Hafeez will be under pressure from Taufeeq Umar for his spot in Pakistan’s XI after being one of few underwhelming performers in Dubai.Pakistan (possible): 1. Ahmed Shehzad, 2. Mohammad Hafeez, 3. Azhar Ali, 4. Younis Khan, 5. Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6. Asad Shafiq, 7. Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 8. Zulfiqar Babar, 9. Imran Khan, 10. Yasir Shah, 11. Rahat AliAustralia’s only likely adjustment would be to include Ben Hilfenhaus or Mitchell Starc at the expense of Steve O’Keefe, but an unchanged XI appears the favoured scenario.Australia (probable): 1 Chris Rogers, 2 David Warner, 3 Alex Doolan, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Steve Smith, 6 Mitchell Marsh, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Peter Siddle, 10 Steve O’Keefe, 11 Nathan LyonPitch and conditionsAbu Dhabi’s pitch appears dry as expected, and though it may not spin quite so much as Dubai’s, variable bounce may come into play as the match wears on.Stats and trivia Pakistan’s last series win over Australia took place in 1994, when a one-wicket victory in Karachi was followed by draws in Rawalpindi and Lahore Sarfraz Ahmed – who already has the most runs as wicketkeeper in 2014 – needs 84 runs to go past Kamran Akmal as the Pakistan wicketkeeper with most Test runs in a calendar year. He has hit 523 runs this year at an average of 65.37 For a Pakistan victory by a margin of more than one match, one must go back as far as a 3-0 sweep of Kim Hughes’ tourists in 1982Quotes”If you’re trying to sell a newspaper, it’s an absolute disaster and you’ll mention India. If you’re part of the Australian cricket team then you’ll look at the last 12 months and how well we’ve played and accept that we’ve lost a game.”

'Our dressing room will never be the same' – Clarke

Australia’s distraught captain Michael Clarke has spoken about Phillip Hughes on behalf of the national team at the SCG

Michael Clarke expresses Australia’s deep pain

Australia’s distraught captain Michael Clarke has spoken about Phillip Hughes on behalf of the national team, revealing that his No. 64 ODI shirt will be retired out of respect for their departed friend and teammate.Clarke spoke for around two and a half minutes, promising “I’ll do my best” and fighting back tears with almost every sentence. During these moments it was difficult to imagine the Australian team turning out for a Test match in Brisbane as soon as Thursday next week – Clarke’s predecessor Ricky Ponting has stated he does not think they can.”Words cannot express how we feel as a team right now. To Greg, Virginia, Jason and Megan, we share in the deep pain that you’re feeling,” Clarke said. “Apart from when he was at home on the farm with his beloved cattle, Hughesy was at his happiest playing cricket for his country with his mates. Things were all put into perspective when Hughesy said ‘where else would you rather be boys, but playing cricket for your country’.”We’re going to miss that cheeky grin and that twinkle in his eye. He epitomised what the baggy green is about and what it means to us all. the world lost one of its great blokes this week, and we are all poorer for it. Our promise to Hughesy’s family is that we will do everything we can to honour his memory. Last night I asked Cricket Australia if Hughesy’s Australian one day international shirt No. 64, could be retired, to which they agreed. That means so much.”His legacy of trying to improve each and every day will drive us for the rest of our lives. We’d like to thank everyone both here and overseas for the touching tributes to Hughesy in recent days. Our dressing room will never be the same. We loved him and always will. Rest in peace, Bruzzy.”Clarke paused longest before uttering the words “our dressing room will never be the same”. Knowing this, Ponting has expressed his belief that the first Test against India should not go ahead as scheduled. The match is due to begin at the Gabba on Thursday. However, on Friday CA’s chief executive James Sutherland said that cricket would go on “when we’re ready”, and added that the players had not yet been consulted about their feelings on whether the Test should go ahead. It is believed the Hughes family wants the Test to go ahead, but the raw emotions displayed by Clarke while reading a statement from the Australia team and staff on Saturday morning made it hard to imagine the players being ready to take the field again so soon. Ponting said it would be a miracle if they were in the right frame of mind for a Test.”It’s been such a tragic week for the Hughes family and the cricket community and I can’t imagine how anybody can be expected to play Test cricket on Thursday,” Ponting wrote in the . “In fact I don’t think it would be right. Even if the boys think they can play, it would be a miracle if they find the right frame of mind needed for five days of cricket.”Ian Chappell has said he believes the Test would provide the players a good opportunity to concentrate on something else, after several days of grieving. That sentiment was echoed by Allan Border, who said it would all come down to whether the players wanted the match to go ahead.”My personal view is that rather than sitting around I think they might be better off playing,” Border said on . “It would be very difficult, I’m not shying away from that. Sitting around in your room you’re going to be thinking about it 24/7.”India’s tour match against a Cricket Australia XI, which was due to take place in Adelaide on Friday and Saturday, was cancelled after Hughes died on Thursday. Sunil Gavaskar said it was difficult to imagine the players being in the right frame of mind to play the first Test.”I guess it’s something the boards will have to look at,” Gavaskar said on NDTV in India. “The first Test is almost a week away but I am sure nobody would be in a mood to play. Nobody would be in the right frame of mind.”

Still dream of playing World Cup – Sehwag

Virender Sehwag has said he is hopeful of figuring in the list of India’s World Cup probables and possibly, playing the tournament

Amol Karhadkar02-Dec-20141:17

Sehwag picks his World Cup semi-finalists

Sehwag’s top four: Australia, SA, India, NZ

When asked to predict the semi-finalists at the World Cup, Virender Sehwag joked that he would have to “study astrology”, before going on to pick India, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand as the top four teams.
“All teams are good. Recently, New Zealand played well against Pakistan in Tests and they will be playing in home conditions at the World Cup. The other teams like Australia and South Africa, they recently played in Australia. In every match, the score was around the 300-run mark and they were close games,” he said. “So it is difficult to say which teams would make the last four but I would still say that it would be Australia, South Africa, India and New Zealand.”

Virender Sehwag last played for India in March 2013. Barring an odd big knock in the IPL, he has failed to impress with the bat during this period. Still, retirement is not on his mind and he is hopeful of featuring in India’s list of World Cup probables and possibly, playing the tournament.”I am still hopeful that my name will figure in the 30 probables for the World Cup,” Sehwag said at an ICC promotional event in Mumbai. “Every player who represents the country dreams of playing in the World Cup and I also still dream of playing in it.”Last month, Sehwag made himself unavailable for the Deodhar Trophy, reportedly to offer more opportunities to youngsters from the North Zone. Still, he stressed he was hoping to break into the national side. “I am playing first-class cricket and looking to score as many runs as I can. Last year, I scored around 250 runs and hopefully this year I can score more. I hope that I can score runs and get back into the [national] side.”Sehwag was also optimistic about India’s chances in the 2015 World Cup. “I think without hopes, nothing happens,” he said. “We won the World Cup in 2011 and I believe we are capable of defending the title in 2015. Our team is very good and is playing well in ODIs. I am sure we can retain the World Cup.”The biggest challenge India could face are the pace-friendly conditions in Australia and New Zealand. Indian teams in the past have struggled to adapt to conditions different from those in the subcontinent. This time, though, the Indian team will spend more than two months in Australia before the World Cup and Sehwag is confident the acclimatisation will help India immensely.”Australia is the best place to play cricket. You get good wickets with bounce, fast wickets, and the ball comes nicely on to the bat,” he said. “You will enjoy batting in Australia and you will also enjoy bowling in Australia. I think all the players who will go to the World Cup, they have already played in Australia and they will be playing in the triangular series before the World Cup so they will get used to the conditions.”The wickets are similar, they are not different. In the World Cup, you will get good wickets to bat and bowl on. You will get true wickets for the game. I don’t think there will be any problem for any team or any problem to adjust. If you have the talent and if you have a strong mindset, you can perform anywhere in the world. A lot of our players have performed in Australia, South Africa, England and everywhere. So we have the team and hopefully we will do well in the World Cup.”
