Newcastle: Targett was "on point again"

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United side fell to a disappointing defeat on Saturday afternoon, with Liverpool running out 1-0 winners at St James’ Park.

The Magpies had some of their own chances, but if it were not for Martin Dubravka’s highly impressive display between the sticks, the scoreline may well have made much worse reading, with the 33-year-old making a whopping nine saves throughout the match.

However, despite the result, it was not only the Slovakia international who turned in an impressive display for Newcastle against the Reds, with Matt Targett being “on point again” – in the words of Jamie Carragher – against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Targett impressed for Newcastle

Indeed, over his 90 minutes on the pitch, the 26-year-old was imperious in a defensive capacity, making three clearances, one interception and six tackles, blocking one shot and winning eight of his 12 duels – a success rate of 67%.

While the £35k-per-week talent did not offer much going forwards – a story which was consistent throughout the majority of the Magpies side – he still had 62 touches of the ball (the second-most for Newcastle) while also completing 21 passes and two long balls.

These returns saw the £15.3m-rated left-back earn an impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.2, ranking him as Howe’s joint second-best performer on the day behind Dubravka. The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder also awarded the defender an eight in his own player ratings, in addition to stating: “A solid display with half a dozen successful tackles. Did well.”

Indeed, from this performance, it is easy to see why the 44-year-old Magpies boss is reportedly eager to make Targett’s temporary stay at St James’ Park a permanent one this summer, as the former England under-21 international has already proven himself to be a key part of Howe’s first-team squad since his January arrival.

India look to avert embarrassing stalemate

It will be interesting to see if India will become more aggressive in the third Test, for attacking consistently will go against what has worked for them in recent times

The Preview by Sidharth Monga19-Nov-2010Match factsSaturday, November 20
Start time 9.30 (0400 GMT)India will be wary of Brendon McCullum with the bat and in the field•AFP

Big PictureIn the late 90s and early 2000s, Australia was the country where teams went to get clean-swept. Pakistan, India and West Indies had managed the distinction in sequence, and the same was expected of New Zealand in 2001-02. Not least because of the form they carried across the ditch, having fought to draw a home Test series against Pakistan and having lost home ODI series to Zimbabwe and Pakistan, along with unsuccessful forays into tri-series in the subcontinent. Yet the top team in the world had to bowl wide outside off to draw the first Test, and then save the final through batting contributions from Shane Warne and Adam Gilchrist. Series result: 0-0.Not too different, in a way, from New Zealand getting Bangla-washed on their way to India, a team looking to extend its reign at the top, its broadcasters selling the series as “Mission Domination”. Score line going into the final match: 0-0, with India being made to save one of those Tests.Still there are differences, outside the obvious reiteration that New Zealand should never be taken lightly. New Zealand then had a much stronger side through the presence of Chris Cairns, Stephen Fleming, Craig McMillan, Nathan Astle and Dion Nash, along with two promising youngsters in Daniel Vettori and Shane Bond. Also, the conditions in Australia aren’t as alien as the ones in India are. Which is what makes the performance in India so far every bit as sweet for New Zealand, if not sweeter. The way the top team played then and the way the top team is playing now cannot be more different. Australia made bold declarations, setting targets such as 284 runs in 56 overs. India are so used to playing on flat tracks that they send a deep point out the moment the leading wicket-taker still playing the game is hit for one boundary. With the exception of Virender Sehwag, India have shown no inclination to set the pace.It will be interesting to see if India will become more aggressive in the decider, for attacking consistently will go against what has worked for them in recent times: damage-control to stay in the game until the wickets arrive. Failing to win a home series against the No. 8 team in the world, though, might require much more damage-control than deep point and deep midwicket can provide.Form guide(Most recent first)
India DDWWW
New Zealand DDLLWWatch out for…Gautam Gambhir scratched through in Hyderabad for his first half-century in 10 months. Those 10 months have featured an evil concoction of injury and poor form, the latter possibly a result of the former. There were signs, though, that he might be getting back to his free-flowing self. Still, being a man who is often too hard on himself, Gambhir can do with a century before he goes to South Africa.

Brendon McCullum invited pressure when he gave up the wicketkeeping gloves to concentrate on his batting. Two Tests into the exercise McCullum already seems to have made a change, albeit in a country that doesn’t test openers as much as some of the others do. Twice in three innings, his impetus at the top has put India on the defensive. India will be wary of his batting, and also keep an eye out for that flying object in the covers.Pitch and conditions The tracks in this series so far have received a lot of negative attention from the home team, who will be hoping for a better pitch in Nagpur. Both the captains have found this pitch to be drier than the ones in Ahmedabad and Hyderabad, but neither of them expects a raging turner designed to give the home team the best possible chance of a win.
More than the pitch now, weather has become the centre of attention, with unseasonal rains washing out both of India’s practice sessions ahead of the match. The main pitch and the bowlers’ run-ups have stayed covered, but puddles have formed in the outfield. A delayed start won’t come as a surprise.Team newsZaheer Khan, India’s best bowler at the moment, has been ruled out with a groin strain, and Ishant Sharma is likely to take his place in the XI. Despite two draws, India are not going to make any other dramatic changes to their combination.

Even if they win the match, they will lose one point; a loss and a draw will cost them six and four points respectively. Six out of India’s top seven batsmen, Virender Sehwag being the exception, have scored at less than 50 runs per 100 balls. New Zealand last won an away Test, not counting Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, in 2002 in the West Indies, which was also the last time they won an away series.Quotes”If you look at the schedule players like myself and Suresh Raina have been playing non-stop cricket since the Sri Lanka tour … So there has not been enough time to switch on and switch off.”

Spurs insider drops update on Rodon future

Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly loan out centre-back Joe Rodon rather than allowing him to leave the club on a permanent deal during the upcoming transfer window, according to Lilywhite Rose insider John Wenham.

The Lowdown: Rodon given green light to leave

The 24-year-old, whose contract with the north London club isn’t set to expire until 2025, reportedly made up his mind earlier this year that he wanted to quit Spurs, and a source from N17 later told Football Insider that they have given the green light for the Welshman to find a new club this summer.

Rodon was linked with a move away from the capital in the January transfer window amid interest from the likes of Brighton, Newcastle and Leeds, but the Spurs insider now believes that the 24-cap international could be loaned out in a bid to raise his price tag before considering a permanent sale.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Loan move on the horizon?

When speaking to Football Insider about the Tottenham defender’s situation, Wenham said:

“If you look at Cameron Carter-Vickers, he has gone to Celtic and risen his stock. Tottenham are now going to get a bigger fee for him wherever he goes this summer.

“So my position on Joe Rodon has changed slightly. I now think it would be more sensible to loan him to another Premier League club.

“Maybe someone who comes up, Fulham would be a good one. He can then play every game that season and raise his own stock.

“That allows us to sell him at a much greater price. At the moment, he is getting no exposure. The Carter-Vickers deal has shown this is the way to do things.”

The Verdict: Rodon could be looking to move

The £7.2m-rated Welshman has barely been given a chance to prove himself in the first team since the arrival of Antonio Conte, having made just three appearances under the 52-year-old this season, with none of those coming in the top flight despite being a regular feature in the Italian’s matchday squads.

Rodon, who was dubbed an “outstanding” player by Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson, will no doubt be looking for a move elsewhere as a result of this in a bid to find some much-needed game time.

With Conte reported to want six fresh faces ahead of the start of the 2022/23 campaign, including one centre-back, it looks like the writing might be on the wall for the Wales defender in N17, and it seems highly unlikely that we will be seeing him in a Spurs shirt next season.

The question is whether we’ll see him in a Spurs shirt again, or whether he could put a potential loan move to good use.

India rules out using review system

The BCCI has categorically ruled out the possibility of India using the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) for the foreseeable future

The Indian board has categorically ruled out the possibility of India using the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) for the foreseeable future, saying they just don’t trust the technology. The board also turned down an offer to travel to Australia to watch how the system is being used during the Ashes series.”We don’t accept this technology. We are not going to use it in any bilateral series,” the BCCI’s secretary and president-elect, N Srinivasan, told . “They were supposed to take us to see its use in the Ashes series but I did not go. We have made our presentation to the ICC, saying we are just not convinced about the technology.”When asked if the cost of the technology was an impediment, Srinivasan said, “That’s another issue but we have got serious doubts about its accuracy.”India’s insistence on avoiding the UDRS is at odds with the trend elsewhere in the cricket world; the technology will also be used in the upcoming World Cup on the subcontinent. “Well, the World Cup is an ICC event and if the ICC decide to use it, they obviously can,” Srinivasan said.India has refused to use the UDRS in any of their bilateral series since becoming the first team to use the technology in 2008. They struggled with their referrals on that tour, getting only one review right, while Sri Lanka successfully challenged 11 decisions. The country’s stand has frustrated some of the other teams, who have called on the ICC to step in and ensure that the system is used uniformly throughout the game.”The ICC needs to take responsibility and lead the way when it comes to the review system,” Graeme Smith, the South Africa captain said after losing the Durban test against India during which a couple of decisions went against his team. Cricket South Africa had pushed hard for the system prior to the three-Test series between the two sides, but the BCCI did not budge.Michael Clarke, who is captaining Australia in the fifth and final Ashes Test in Ricky Ponting’s absence, echoed Smith’s comments, saying, ” I think it should be 100% used or not used at all.”

ND make semi-finals despite defeat

A round-up of the final round of league matches in the NZC one-day competition

Lou Vincent’s century set up Auckland’s win•Getty Images

Auckland sealed second spot, two points less than table-toppers Canterbury, after a comprehensive 67-run victory over Wellington at Basin Reserve. The defeat not only ended Wellington’s chances of making the semi-final, it consigned them to the bottom of the table.Auckland’s mammoth total of 320 was set up by a century from opener Lou Vincent and quickfire contributions from captain Gareth Hopkins and Greg Todd. Vincent and Hopkins put on 109 for the third wicket at 7.34 runs to carry Auckland to 188 for 2 in just the 33rd over. Both batsmen scored freely as the Wellington bowlers struggled to keep the run-rate in check. Hopkins was dismissed for 54 off just 48 balls but Vincent continued to torment the bowlers, reaching his 100 off 107 balls. He added a further 53 with Todd before he was finally dismissed for 112. Todd made a rapid 48 to propel Auckland closer to 300 and Colin Munro and Roneel Hira hit some big shots lower down the order to carry Auckland to 320 for 9.It was never going to be an easy chase for Wellington who are currently at the bottom of the points table, having won just two of their previous seven games. Opener Stephen Murdoch, in the news for Jesse Ryder’s tweet about him, made a half-century and Grant Elliott made 46, but they failed to receive much support from the other Wellington batsmen. Hopkins used seven bowlers and all of them were among the wickets as Wellington were bowled out 253 in just under 47 overs.Canterbury confirmed their place at the top of the points table after they comfortably beat Otago by five wickets at Aorangi Oval in Timaru. Otago elected to bat and started solidly with openers Aaron Redmond and Michael Bracewell putting on 54 in just under 11 overs before Redmond was run out. Rob Nicol struck three times but Craig Cumming and Darren Broom added 91 runs and at 205 for 4, with little over five overs to go, Otago looked like they had the platform for a big total. However Broom was run out soon after he reached his half-century, and his dismissal in the 45th over triggered a collapse. Derek de Boorder was run out in the next over and Mitchell Claydon dismissed Craig Cumming, who top scored with 66, and Warren McSkimming, in the 47th over followed by Nick Beard and Neil Wagner in the 49th over. Otago slumped to 220 all out, failing to bat out their 50 overs.Canterbury started poorly losing openers Nicol and Michael Papps cheaply. A 54-run partnership between Dean Brownlie and Peter Fulton steadied the innings. Fulton then combined with Shanan Stewart to put on 66 runs to set Canterbury on track for victory. Fulton was dismissed for 77, but Stewart remained unbeaten on 65 as his unbroken 86-run stand with Andrew Ellis (55) carried Canterbury to an easy victory.Central Districts had already been knocked out of the tournament, but they at least had the satisfaction of signing off on a winning note, beating Northern Districts by five runs in a thriller in Whangarei.Peter Ingram clubbed 12 fours on his way to a quick 64 before Tim Weston made a less explosive but effective 99 – unbeaten one short of his maiden century when the innings ended – pushed CD to 246. They seemed to have the game in the bag when ND slid to 87 for 5, but it turned out to be a close game thanks to BJ Watling’s century and Peter McGlashan’s 69.The pair were at the crease when ND needed 16 from the final two overs, but a superb penultimate over from Michael Mason, who conceded only three, left them chasing 13 off the last six deliveries. Highly-rated youngster Adam Milne proved CD’s hero as he had McGlashan caught behind, and it boiled down to eight off two. Milne gave away only singles off them to clinch the victory. ND had the consolation of making the semi-finals after Wellington’s defeat to Auckland.
