South Africa look to seal series

ESPNcricinfo previews the 2nd ODI between South Africa and Zimbabwe at Potchefstroom

The Preview by Liam Brickhill 16-Oct-2010Match FactsSunday October 17, Potchefstroom
Start time 10:00am (0800 GMT)Zimbabwe will continue to rely on Brendan Taylor’s good form as they strive to keep the one-day series alive•AFP

The Big PictureThis series is still alive, but unless Zimbabwe can pull together to fight in unison South Africa’s superior batting firepower will continue to prove the difference between two sides whose bowlers have collectively been made to toil hard on a succession of featherbeds. Where Zimbabwe have provided promise, South Africa have more often than not delivered on their potential and played more effectively as a team; their shots travelling that much further, their seamers’ lines that much tighter. That is to take nothing away from the quality of some of the individual efforts from the visitors. The past history of Zimbabwe cricket’s voyages south of the Limpopo is littered with a succession of one-sided whompings, and while the most recent excursion is still winless there has been far less embarrassment this time round.South Africa’s batting, in the absence of Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis and Mark Boucher, is in a state of flux as a generational changing of the guard takes hold. But the results so far suggest good health – notwithstanding the disappointingly weak nature of the opposition’s attack – and that department’s future seems to be in good hands. The back-up bowlers have been less convincing, however, and the fielding is still carrying a tinge of early-season rustiness. Some hard work is no doubt being put in to rectify these issues, but conditions in Potchefstroom are likely to favour the batsmen once more and the hosts’ relatively inexperienced seam attack will continue to feel the pressure. South Africa’s bowlers remains a cut above Zimbabwe’s, however, and if their batsmen continue to dine on the visitors’ tame offerings then the series may well be decided on Sunday.Form guideSouth Africa WWWWW
Zimbabwe LLWWLWatch out for…In the midst of his defiant century at Bloemfontein, Brendan Taylor took his tally of international runs in the last 12 months past 1,000, across formats. That knock was his third ODI hundred in 24 games during that time – suggesting that Taylor is in a rich vein of form – and if he and one or two of Zimbabwe’s batsmen can perform in the same game then South Africa could face their sternest test of the series.Earmarked early in his career for his destructive potential, Albie Morkel has had a quiet time in international cricket of late. His last 10 ODIs have yielded just 147 runs – including 50 in one innings against Zimbabwe last November – and he shone only briefly in the midst of a disappointing South African campaign at the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean earlier this year. However, his bowling in Bloemfontein was steady, if unspectacular, and if Morkel can settle at the crease his undoubted ability could lead to a demolition of Zimbabwe’s unproven seamers.Pitch and conditionsEven this early in the season, a day game in Potchefstroom means just one thing: runs. The ground will also hold bad memories for Zimbabwe as the last time these two sides met here South Africa racked up an enormous 418 for 5, Mark Boucher spanking 10 sixes in an unbeaten 68-ball 147. It could also be a hot day in the field for both sides, with sunny, clear skies expected.Team newsSouth Africa are likely to retain the same XI that won on Friday. The one change they may think about is bringing in fast bowler Lonwabo Tsotsobe in place of Charl Langeveldt.South Africa (possible) 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Colin Ingram, 4 JP Duminy, 5 AB de Villiers (wk), 6 David Miller, 7 Johan Botha, 8 Ryan McLaren, 9 Wayne Parnell, 10 Rusty Theron 11 Lonwabo TsotsobeSean Williams’ place could be under the scanner after his indifferent performance in the first ODI, with Craig Ervine a possible replacement. Ed Rainsford could also make the final XI, in place of Chris MpofuZimbabwe (possible) 1 Brendan Taylor, 2 Hamilton Masakadza, 3 Chamu Chibhabha, 4 Sean Williams/Craig Ervine, 5 Grant Flower, 6 Tatenda Taibu (wk), 7 Elton Chigumbura (capt), 8 Graeme Cremer, 9 Prosper Utseya, 10 Shingirai Masakadza, 11 Chris Mpofu/Ed RainsfordStats and trivia South Africa have never lost a ODIs at Potchefstroom. In six matches, the closest they came to a defeat was a tie against Australia in 2002. Grant Flower is Zimbabwe’s second highest ODI run-getter and is 237 runs short of his brother Andy’s tally. Hashim Amla’s one-day average of 56.96 is the second highest among all batsmen who have played a minimum of 20 innings In the last 12 months, Brendan Taylor has averaged 48.15 in one-day cricket, scoring 963 runs including three hundreds and six fifties.Quotes
“At the moment we don’t have [Steyn and Morkel], but it’s an opportunity for guys to still get their skills right. When those guys are back and fit these guys will be looking to stake claims, so it’s important that they show their worth.”
“When we arrived here we wanted to be positive and take our cricket to the next level, and we’re moving in the right direction.”

Sheff Wed receive injury boost

Sheffield Wednesday have been boosted by the news that key pair George Byers and Liam Palmer should be fit for the crucial clash with Fleetwood Town.

The Lowdown: Huge game for Owls

The Owls were beaten 1-0 away to Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday afternoon, in what was a damaging defeat in the League One promotion battle.

The loss leaves Darren Moore’s side in seventh place and outside the playoff places ahead of Tuesday evening’s massive trip to struggling Fleetwood.

Wednesday had to make do without both Byers and Palmer for the Wycombe game – they didn’t come off the substitutes’ bench – with the pair key players this season, having started a combined 54 league matches.

The Latest: Key duo return

Speaking to the media on Saturday [via Football League World], however, Moore confirmed that he expects the duo to return to the fold at Fleetwood, having rested them at Adams Park:

“It has been a big week. The likes of George and Liam Palmer have played twice this week and we decided to rotate. Now we get them back and ready for Tuesday.

“We have suffered a lot of injuries this season from over misuse and fatigue and tiredness from games. I was able to rejuggle the pack and get ready for Tuesday.”

The Verdict: Massive boost for Wednesday

This is a huge boost for anyone of an Owls persuasion, given the enormity of Tuesday’s potentially make-or-break trip to Highbury.

Victory there would leave playoff destiny in Wednesday’s hands, taking them above Plymouth Argyle and Wycombe, and possibly Sunderland, too, if they don’t win at home to Rotherham on Tuesday.

Both Byers and Palmer would surely both be in Moore’s strongest possible XI and them being back in the team enhances the Owls’ hopes of securing a top-six place, ahead of the final game against Portsmouth at Hillsborough next weekend.

Byers has brought quality and poise to Wednesday’s midfield, scoring five league goals, while Palmer is a model of consistency, having now made 342 appearances for the club.

Celtic backed to sign Christopher Scott

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has talked up the idea of Celtic completing the signing of exciting Bayern Munich youngster Christopher Scott this summer.

The Lowdown: Hoops keen on Scott move

Ange Postecoglou already has a strong squad at his disposal at Parkhead, with yet another Scottish Premiership title on the cusp of coming the club’s way.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-3/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

That’s not to say that new signings don’t need to come in this summer, however, and Scott is one player who has been linked with a move to Celtic.

The 19-year-old looks set to leave Bayern at the end of this season, with his current deal expiring in June. He has made two appearances for the Bundesliga giants to date.

The Latest: Journalist talks up signing

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke was positive about Celtic signing Scott, claiming he would be an ‘exciting’ addition:

“It’s an interesting link, this one. Obviously, he’s a young player, only 19. He would maybe fit the bill for Celtic as he’s out of contract in the summer, so he could arrive as a free agent.

“He’s been playing for Bayern Munich’s reserves, so we don’t know too much about him, but at 19, he seems like an exciting attacker.”

The Verdict: One for the future

Scott joining Celtic for free this summer feels like it could be an ideal match for all concerned, with the attacking midfielder clearly not seen as a key player at Bayern moving forward.

He could come in as a squad player under Postecoglou, maturing over time and potentially becoming a key figure, considering he has already played for a club of Bayern’s stature.

Planning for the future is always vital, ensuring the Hoops’ squad doesn’t age together, and Scott is someone who could act as a long-term capture rather than a quick fix, who also has the potential to make an impact from the off.

In other news, an expert has made a key claim regarding the ownership of Celtic. Read more here.

Tamim Iqbal, Bangladesh’s talismanic opener, has been named Test Player of the Year by the , “but I consider my innings at Old Trafford as a better effort.”Tamim said the aggressive batting of Sehwag was an inspiration. “When I first came into scene, I wasn’t doing badly in the one-dayers but in Test cricket, I used to be caught in two minds. Whether to attack or defend and more importantly when to attack,” he said. “Sehwag is one batsman who changed the grammar of batting as far as Test openers are concerned. After a certain point of time, I decided that I will play my natural game just like Sehwag does. That is to dominate the bowlers and fortunately I have been successful in my endeavour.”The award is calculated by the marks out of 10 that the Wisden Cricketer’s reporters give each player at every Test and is the second successive time a Bangladesh player has won the award after Shakib Al Hasan won last year.Tamim is currently recovering from surgery on his wrist that had ruled him out of the New Zealand series.

Sammy vows to bring passion and energy

After playing just eight Tests, Darren Sammy finds himself catapulted to the forefront of West Indies cricket in a time of upheaval and change, but none of this appears to faze him

Tariq Engineer21-Oct-2010

The joy of cricket, that is what Darren Sammy wants to bring back to West Indies•AFP

Darren Sammy never dreamed of being the West Indies captain. He once said his goal was to be the workhorse of the side. Yet after playing only eight Tests, he finds himself catapulted to the forefront of West Indies cricket in a time of upheaval and change, with a tough tour of Sri Lanka on the horizon, but none of this appears to faze him.”I am going to be bold and frank,” Sammy told ESPNcricinfo. “I will let the players know what I expect and I, myself, will set an example. I will bring out the passion, the energy, and the commitment to West Indies cricket.”Sammy was given the captaincy after his predecessor Chris Gayle, and vice-captain Dwayne Bravo chose not to sign central contracts last month. The pair, along with Kieron Pollard, have forged lucrative Twenty20 careers in domestic tournaments, including the IPL, and refused WICB’s contracts which stipulated that they must make themselves available for the West Indies team at all times. The selectors decided it was important to have a captain who wanted to make that commitment, and placed Sammy and the Australian-born batsman Brendan Nash in charge of the Test squad until the end of the 2011 home series, ending Gayle’s three-year period at the helm of the team. Gayle and Bravo are in the squad that is headed to Sri Lanka, and Sammy is confident of having his former captain’s support.”Ever since I started my career in 2004, Chris has been the one who has made me feel comfortable. I have a good relationship with him, and with most of the players. He has said he will give me and the team his full support, which I know he means.”Sammy said he doesn’t feel any pressure to justify his place despite not being a regular member of the Test squad since he marked his Test debut in 2007 with 7 for 66 at Old Trafford. Since then he has been in and out of the side, averaging 19.40 with the bat and 27.74 with the ball. “I have full confidence in my ability,” Sammy said. “When I have been given the opportunity to play Test cricket, my stats show that I have done well.”West Indies have slipped to seventh place in the ICC Test rankings and eighth in the ODI chart and Sammy, obviously, is keen to lead the side back up the table. To do this he talks about thinking clearly on the field and executing properly, about doing the right things. But most of all, he talks about playing with pride and passion – something West Indies teams of recent vintage have often lacked.”I vow to represent the West Indies with pride and dignity,” he said. “Whatever we do, whether we are fielding, batting or bowling, you do with pride.”He realises this is no overnight task, that West Indies are in a rebuilding phase, and the Sri Lanka tour is merely the first step in what will be a long journey back to prominence. He remains optimistic though, that everyone is on the same page. “It will take a strong work ethic and discipline to get us there. We have to work as a team. We have to enjoy what we do. When we do that, and when we play well, it brings lots of smiles to the Caribbean people.”Sammy is acutely aware of the heritage of West Indies cricket and the responsibility of the current generation to live up to it. “I am taking on a mountain that carries so much legacy,” he said, “and I will also remind the guys of the great legacy that we carry.” He talks about the honour of following in the footsteps of Frank Worrell, Garfield Sobers, Clive Lloyd and Vivian Richards as the captain of the side. Sammy’s comments are in contrast to Gayle’s, who has said more than once that he does not want to be captain, and that he wouldn’t be sad if Test cricket were to disappear.Sammy plans to pick the brains of Lloyd and Richards, as well as senior players in the current team, to help him become a better captain. However, he makes it clear he will ultimately be his own man.His expectations for the tour of Sri Lanka are simple – to compete. The squad contains a lot of new faces and he cites Shivnarine Chanderpaul as someone who sets “an excellent example” as a batsman and a cricketer that newcomers can look up to. Gayle is another player he feels can inspire the youngsters in the squad. Although Sulieman Benn will miss the first Test due to suspension, Sammy is confident the team has the bowling resources to trouble the Sri Lankan batsman. But beyond the mathematics of wins and losses, Sammy wants to put the smiles back on the faces of West Indies fans. He wants to make them feel the same way he felt when he first started watching cricket with his father. “That’s what Darren Sammy wants to do. Bring back the joy.”
