Raina leads India to series sweep

Suresh Raina and M Vijay made light work of Zimbabwe’s second-highest total in Twenty20 internationals to give India a clean sweep of the series

Suresh Raina and M Vijay made light work of Zimbabwe’s second-highest total in Twenty20 internationals, smacking five sixes and eight fours between them to set up a seven-wicket win, and with that the 2-0 sweep of the Twenty20 series. Sweeps and reverse-sweeps from Tatenda Taibu and a late cameo from Charles Coventry took Zimbabwe to their mildly competitive total, but it could be argued they lost the match in their Powerplay that went for only 21 runs. After paying for too many strokes too early in the first match, Zimbabwe erred on the side of caution in the second. There were 48 dot balls in the innings, five of them because Hamilton Masakadza shouldered arms to the first six deliveries he faced, one of them a wide. He was out to the first aggressive shot he played, hitting straight down mid-off’s throat. Brendan Taylor and Chamu Chibhabha didn’t try any big shots off the seamers, and Chibhabha fell to an expansive slog-sweep in the sixth over, bowled by Pragyan Ojha.By the time Taylor, who struggled to get singles in his 31-ball 26, got out to a superb catch on the long-off boundary by Yusuf Pathan, Zimbabwe had reached only 64 in the 13th over. Taibu, though, was playing a different game: sweeping, reverse-sweeping, running fast, hitting the spinners off their lengths. He may have hit only two boundaries – a sweep of each variety – but had raced to 25 off 18 when Taylor got out. Coventry came out and made one wonder just why the top order batted so slowly. He reverse-swept R Ashwin for two boundaries in the 16th over, and between those two hits fit an exquisite six over extra cover. Vinay offered him length in the next over, and Coventry got another six.Dinda removed Coventry with a perfect yorker in the 18th over, for a 13-ball 28. Elton Chigumbura played a mini cameo, looting Ashwin in the penultimate over for six, six and four, but Suresh Raina took a blinder running from midwicket towards deep midwicket to control the damage.Raina was in damage-inflicting mood when he came in to bat, with 32 runs up in five overs. Vijay had by then – not entire convincingly – converted a slow start into an acceptable one. He kept clearing his leg and swinging, he missed a couple, but the ones he connected travelled. Raina’s method involved fewer risks. He kept targeting midwicket and extra cover, and connected well on most occasions.Raina wasted little time, and punched the third ball he faced past extra cover for four. It was all India after that. Vijay hit two massive sixes, Raina responded with a four and a six over midwicket, and India had reached 89 in 12 overs. Two boundaries either side of square leg in Ray Price’s 14th over, and Raina had caught up with Vijay in quick time.Vijay fell four short of fifty, but Raina kept timing them beautifully. The six that brought up his half century, a low full toss hit over long-off, was effortless, and brought the equation down to 23 off 29, putting the matter beyond any reasonable doubt.

West Ham can axe Yarmolenko with Nevers

At present, David Moyes’ West Ham side boasts a wealth of options both out wide and in attacking midfield, with the likes of Jarrod Bowen, Said Benrahma, Manuel Lanzini, Pablo Fornals and Nikola Vlasic all capable of operating in the three spots behind Michail Antonio in the Irons’ attack.

However, with the games coming thick and fast for the Hammers in the coming weeks, the 58-year-old manager could still use the addition of a further option in the position.

This is a role that would usually be assigned to Andriy Yarmolenko, the £115k-per-week winger who West Ham paid Borussia Dortmund £17.5m to sign back in 2018, though, with the 32-year-old forward – who Dion Dublin dubbed “embarrassing” against Kidderminster Harriers last weekend – having offered his side next to nothing over the past season and a half, it would very much appear as if the Ukraine international’s days are numbered at the London Stadium.

However, rather than splashing the cash on a big-money signing this summer, perhaps it would be wise for Moyes to take a closer look at one of the Hammers’ most exciting youth prospects over the remainder of the season before making his move in the transfer market – in the shape of 19-year-old Thierry Nevers.

“Awe-inspiring”

Indeed, it is clear that the winger is a player who those at West Ham have extremely high hopes for, with the club’s academy manager, Ricky Martin, stating of the teenager upon his signing from Reading last summer: “I’m excited to wish Thierry a warm welcome to West Ham United. Thierry is someone that we’ve been following for the last couple of seasons. He’s put in some awe-inspiring performances, and we’re excited to introduce him to the U23s squad.”

And, considering his returns in the West Ham youth setup so far this season, it is easy to see why Martin appears to be so excited about the winger’s potential, as, over his ten Premier League 2 appearances, the teenager has already scored four goals and provided his teammates with one assist.

Furthermore, the forward has also proven that he can comfortably operate in the number nine role, scoring one goal and earning a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.4 from centre-forward in the U21’s 2-0 win over Gillingham in the Papa John’s Trophy earlier this season.

As such, considering his positional versatility, clear eye for goal and abundance of potential, the 19-year-old would very much appear to be Yarmolenko’s ideal successor in the West Ham first team – all he needs is the chance to stake his claim.

Journalist makes ‘bonkers’ Bamford claim

It is ‘absolutely bonkers’ that Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford hasn’t started a game for five months, according to journalist David Anderson.

The Lowdown: Bamford missing for months

The 28-year-old enjoyed perhaps the best season of his career in 2020/21, scoring 17 goals and registering seven assists in the Premier League, proving to be a pivotal figure for the Whites on their return to the top flight.

Bamford has had an unfortunate time of things in this campaign, though, starting just five times in the league as constant injury problems have held him back.

The hope is that the striker’s return to the fold isn’t far away now, given his all-round influence.

The Latest: Journalist bemoans Bamford’s absence

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Anderson admitted that he is staggered about how much football Bamford has missed this season, saying:

“Bielsa was optimistic and said Bamford should have been back for West Ham, but he suffered another injury and it’s his third one of the season.

“He hasn’t started a game for Leeds since 17 September, it’s absolutely bonkers.”

The Verdict: Huge miss for Leeds

There have been numerous reasons for Leeds’ struggles at times in 2021/22 and the absence of Bamford has certainly been one of them, with Marcelo Bielsa’s men far more toothless without the 28-year-old. Having scored 62 league goals last season, they have just 24 this term just beyond the midway point of the campaign.

Not only is the Englishman a regular source of goals, his selflessness on and off the ball is also crucial, as highlighted by two assists this season prior to his injury troubles and an average of 1.1 clearances per game.

When Bamford returns, it should give Leeds the focal point they sorely need – Jurgen Klopp has hailed him as ‘exceptional’ – and it would be a surprise if their level of performances and results don’t go up a gear once he is eventually back.

Katich backs Smith as Test prospect

Steven Smith’s state captain Simon Katich is confident the legspinning allrounder will be ready for Test cricket if he gets his opportunity at Lord’s against Pakistan next month

Steven Smith’s state captain Simon Katich is confident the legspinning allrounder will be ready for Test cricket if he gets his opportunity at Lord’s against Pakistan next month. Nathan Hauritz has been forced home from Australia’s tour with a foot injury and is unlikely to be fit for the Tests, which leaves Smith as the sole spinner in the squad. The Australian selectors are understandably excited by Smith, who at 21 already has four first-class centuries to his name, is a miraculous fielder and an improving bowler. The major question-mark over Smith as a potential Test player is the quality of his legspin, which has brought him 26 wickets in first-class cricket at an average of 48.84.They are hardly the sort of figures that will strike fear into Test batsmen. But Katich, who will be one of Smith’s Test team-mates if he is handed a baggy green at Lord’s, said Smith had taken major steps in his bowling last summer and his season-ending effort for New South Wales of 7 for 64 against South Australia at the SCG was a terrific sign.”He blew us all away with the way he knocked South Australia over on one afternoon of cricket,” Katich, who is in England playing for Lancashire, told Cricinfo. “At one stage they were cruising at 2 for 180 and then in an hour’s time they were all out and we’d finished the season.”It was phenomenal bowling and the way he was getting his wickets was great – big spinning legspinners caught and slip and bat pad and bowled – genuine wickets, not through bad shots or anything. He just went through them with great bowling. That was exciting to see him make a statement.”That display alone meant Smith had already bettered the first-class bowling best of Cameron White, to whom he is often compared as a useful legspinner and powerful batsman. White was chosen as a bowler in all four Tests on Australia’s tour of India in 2008, yet in 108 first-class appearances he has only ever taken two five-wicket hauls.Smith has spoken about the value of his one-on-one training with Shane Warne during the Australian summer, when he was first called in to the Test squad as cover. Since then he has firmly established himself in Australia’s Twenty20 squad and over the next few weeks has the chance to make his name as a one-day and Test player.”There’s been a lot of talk about who’s going to be the next big thing spinning-wise in Australia,” Katich said. “That’s a lot of pressure for the young guys coming through. The way he progressed through the summer, when he was in and around the Test squad at various stages and spent time with Warney … his bowling went to another level after those sessions.”He’s a confident player and he’s prepared to listen and learn. He’s got a very bright future in front of him. Whether he gets an opportunity or not [in the Tests] we’ll wait and see, but if the wickets are dry and they spin, then he could come into calculations. There’s no doubt that he’s gaining confidence being in and around the Australian setup. You can see his improvement all the time.”If Smith does make his debut next month, he will be the eighth spinner Australia have tried in Tests since the retirement of Warne just over three years ago. Of those, Brad Hogg and Stuart MacGill have retired, Beau Casson is struggling for a place with New South Wales, Jason Krejza has fallen away for Tasmania, Bryce McGain is performing solidly but is 38, and White rarely bowls for Victoria.

AVFC must unleash Tim Iroegbunam

After getting beat 1-0 against Newcastle United, Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard said that changes need to take place in the team moving forward.

Having then been beaten by Watford by another 1-0 scoreline in their latest league outing, it seems as though Gerrard may have a bigger problem on his hands than originally feared, with his side now having only won one of their seven previous league games.

Moving forward, one big change that the Villa boss could look to make in his team is by giving young midfielder Tim Iroegbunam his first taste of senior football at the Midlands club.

The 19-year-old has been involved on the substitutes bench for Villa’s last seven games, showing that he is on the fringes of breaking into the first team after joining the club back in the previous summer transfer window from fellow Midlands outfit West Bromwich Albion.

Since becoming a Villa player, the midfielder, who has been described as “athletic” in the past by the club’s academy manager Mark Harrison, Iroegbunam has made 18 appearances for their U23 side, chipping in with one goal and one assist in the process.

Earlier this month, Gerrard had this to say about the teenager and his situation regarding when he’ll make his first senior appearance for the Villans.

He said: “I know he’s ready but, the midfield area at the moment for us, I’m really pleased with it. It’s looking good, looking strong. Tim has to keep pushing and fighting.”

Taking this into account, perhaps Villa’s two previous results will have swayed Gerrard into making a change with his team selection and giving the young midfielder a chance to show what he can do in the Premier League.

While unleashing the Englishman could be a positive solution for Villa’s current issues on the pitch in the short term and an exciting prospect for the fans to see, it’s worth thinking on a long-term basis too.

If Iroegbunam can make the most out of any opportunities that come his way between now and the end of the season, he could well end up saving the club millions in potential transfer fees rather than seeing them splash out on the likes of Yves Bissouma or Wilfred Ndidi when the summer transfer window opens.
