Chennai’s disheartening defeat at the hands of Punjab, the fitness problems of MS Dhoni and Justin Kemp, and repeated failures in their experiment with a fifth bowler are a serious cause for concern come tomorrow

Bangalore and Chennai are capital cities sharing a traditional rivalry but when extended to the third edition of the IPL, there is little debate over which team is better placed going into Tuesday’s match-up. Bangalore are top of the IPL table while Chennai are bruising physically and mentally. Both teams suffered blips in their respective starts to the tournament before winning the next two games. However, Chennai’s Super Over defeat at home to Kings XI Punjab on Sunday, when they failed to chase 137, the fitness problems of two crucial players, MS Dhoni and Justin Kemp, and repeated failures in their experiments with the fifth-bowler slot are serious causes for concern. Manpreet Gony, who struggled against Punjab with both bat and ball, Joginder Sharma and Sudeep Tyagi have all been tried with poor results.Contrast that to Bangalore’s resurgence. There has been stability in their attack with the five frontline bowlers retained in their three successive wins; targets high, low and tricky have been chased ruthlessly with Jacques Kallis unbeaten in this IPL, and with three fifties in four games; and backing up a formidable opening pair of Kallis and Manish Pandey is a line-up with considerable international exposure, which Chennai’s bowlers, barring Muttiah Muralitharan, may struggle to contain. The absence of Dhoni hurt Chennai in their failed chase against Punjab; his recovery from an injury to his arm has been gradual, and coach Stephen Fleming had said he could take the field in the game against Mumbai Indians on March 25. Chennai, who could slip down further from their current fourth position in the event of a loss on Tuesday, need an urgent recovery with their star player missing.Team talkBangalore will be tempted to retain the combination that has won them the last three games. Eoin Morgan, though, thanks to the success of the openers, hasn’t had much time in the middle and Bangalore will be keen to witness him perform.Chennai could leave out Gony after his disappointing turn-out against Punjab. Chennai will have prepared a contingency measure for Kemp, who hurt his back, bowling just one ball and not coming out to bat. In the event of his absence, Sri Lankan allrounder Thissara Perera remains an option, so does Makhaya Ntini, should Chennai aim to strengthen their bowling. C Ganapathy, a fast-bowling allrounder, who is a crucial member of the Tamil Nadu set-up, could fill in if Gony’s left out.Previously…Bangalore 3 Chennai 2
The teams shared honours in the first edition, with Chennai beating Bangalore at the Chinnaswamy Stadium by 13 runs, and Bangalore prevailing at Chepauk by 14 runs. The league stages in South Africa followed a similar pattern as Chennai triumphed in Port Elizabeth by 92 runs, followed by Bangalore surviving by two wickets in Durban. However, Bangalore had the last laugh, sealing an easy win in the semi-final by six wickets, with Pandey and Rahul Dravid seeing them through. In the spotlightMurali v Bangalore top order: Kallis and Pandey have been dominant while opening. While Kallis, with all his experience, has the wherewithal to combat Murali, Pandey has only faced the offspinner once. He proved adept against Shane Warne in Bangalore’s ten-wicket win, showing solidity in defence and picking the variations to find the boundary. While Murali generally doesn’t prefer bowling within the first six overs, Chennai may adopt a different strategy to halt Bangalore’s success at the top.Matthew Hayden v Dale Steyn: Steyn has clocked close to 150 kmph this tournament and has been economical, working well with his opening partner Praveen Kumar. He is foremost in Anil Kumble’s plan of bouncing out Indian batsmen. While the ploy may be designed more to target someone like Suresh Raina, who was found out in the World Twenty20, Hayden’s naturally audacious approach presents a different challenge.Prime numbersAnil Kumble has bowled 45 dot balls in this IPL, Steyn too has 45 and Praveen Kumar has 43. They are part of a list of six players with the most dot balls in the competition; Murali has 46 to his name.Bangalore have conceded 180 runs in the Powerplay in this IPL, at 7.19 an over. They are third in the list of most economical teams in the first six overs, with Deccan Chargers leading with 5.95, followed by Kolkata Knight Riders at 6.92. Chennai, with 7.68, are in fifth place. The chatter”We wanted Kallis to bat for the 20 overs and he has been doing that. He has been anchoring one end and when required he has been taking on the bowlers. He is a great player and with his ability to bowl he is a great asset. We hope that this continues.”
Anil Kumble, the Bangalore captain, sums up Kallis’ role, which he has lived up to with much success thus far.

Celtic: Liverpool want Ben Doak

Liverpool are looking to snap up versatile Celtic youngster Ben Doak, according to The Daily Record’s Scott Burns.

The Lowdown: Doak profiled

Doak is just 16 years of age and was recently on the bench for Ange Postecoglou’s first team against St Johnstone prior to the winter break.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Transfermarkt have him classified as a midfielder, FlashScore as a forward and The Glasgow Evening Times as a full-back or a winger, making Doak an extremely versatile player.

He is yet to pen professional terms at Parkhead, though, and it seems as if he could be the latest Hoops starlet to move on before making a senior Celtic debut.

The Latest: Burns’ claim

Burns shared an update regarding Doak for the Daily Record on Saturday afternoon, claiming that the Reds are looking at a compensation deal for the 16-year-old.

However, Celtic are trying to stop a move to Merseyside and are aiming to convince the teenager to agree a long-term contract in Glasgow.

The Verdict: Not ideal

The Hoops have lost a number of talented youngsters over the years, with Leo Hjelde a recent example of a player to depart without making a senior appearance for Celtic before going on to make a first team breakthrough for Leeds United.

Mitchel Frame is another Parkhead academy starlet who has been linked with a Premier League switch, and it seems as if Doak could also now leave.

The pull of the Premier League appears to be too much for these young talents to resist, but hopefully CEO Michael Nicholson and Postecoglou can persuade Doak to commit his future to Celtic.

In other news: £12m Celtic trio now set to leave Parkhead over the next 7 days, journalist claims.

Aston Villa hopeful of signing Bentancur

Aston Villa are hopeful of signing Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur before Monday’s transfer deadline.

That’s according to The Telegraph’s John Percy, and as to be expected, the update has had a number of Villa fans talking.

The Midlands club have been busy this month, finalising moves for Philippe Coutinho, Lucas Digne and Robin Olsen while also adding Kerr Smith to their academy ranks.

Steven Gerrard still wants a centre-back and a holding midfielder, though, with an approach made for Bentancur over the weekend.

Percy claimed on Tuesday that Villa were hopeful of striking an agreement with Juventus and may look to bring in a centre-back on loan over the coming days. The reliable reporter touted an £18m figure for Bentancur, with Luis Suarez providing Gerrard with a glowing review of his international teammate.

Villa fans react

@villareport relayed Percy’s claim regarding the Uruguayan on Twitter. Here is what these Villa supporters had to say in reply, with many excited and one labelling a potential deal as ‘amazing’.

Warwickshire batsmen see off spirited Leicestershire

Round-up of action from the Clydesdale Bank 40

02-May-2010Warwickshire overcame a defiant innings by Leicestershire prospect James Taylor to register their second win in the Clydesdale Bank 40 competition at Edgbaston. After piling up 321 for 7, the Bears had restricted the Foxes to 235 for 7 when the umpires took the players off in the 35th over because of bad light. The conditions failed to improve and, with Taylor stranded on 92 after facing 77 balls, Warwickshire secured a 41-run victory under the Duckworth/Lewis method.Ashwell Prince and Steven Croft shared their third century partnership of the summer to help Lancashire open their Clydesdale Bank 40 account at the expense of Glamorgan at Old Trafford. The Red Rose pair helped their side recover from 89 for 3 in pursuit of 272 with an unbroken 186 to win by seven wickets with 16 balls to spareAfter a rousing display with the bat, Yorkshire then had the better of the difficult conditions as they beat Northamptonshire by 35 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method. Chasing an initially revised target of 245 in 30 overs, Northants were four for one after two overs when rain caused a further stoppageNew signing Steven Mullaney took three quick wickets to rip the heart out of the Hampshire batting and set up a convincing 35-run win for Nottinghamshire in their clash at the Rose Bowl. Mullaney, signed from Lancashire in the close season, finished with 3 for 24 as Hampshire’s poor start to the season continued. Hampshire have now lost all five matches in both competitions and there was never any doubt they would lose this encounter after overnight rain and persistent drizzle reduced the match to 24 overs each. The Kent v Durham, Surrey v Unicorns and Middlesex v Essex fixtures were all rained off.

AS DIFICULDADES DO FLA NO MERCADO

President makes big Alli admission involving Spurs

Speaking to the press (via Futbol Arena), Adana Demirspor president Murat Sancak has made a major January claim involving Tottenham and their former midfielder Dele Alli.

The Lowdown: Alli completes Everton switch…

After some fine moments at N17 with memories aplenty, former Mauricio Pochettino favourite Alli waved goodbye to Spurs and completed a switch to Everton on deadline day.

It is believed the Englishman’s initial free transfer to Goodison Park could eventually rise to around £40 million if certain conditions and clauses are met (The Mirror), with the first £10m coming once he makes 20 appearances under Frank Lampard.

An unceremonious end to what was a very promising start to his Tottenham career, club chief Sancak of the Turkish Super Lig now claims that Alli could have made a shock switch.

The Latest: Sancak makes major claim…

The Adana Demirspor chief says that his side very nearly completed a deal to sign the 6 foot 2 attacker in the final days of January, but Everton and Lampard then scuppered his plans.

“We agreed with Tottenham for Dele Alli. They would rent us,” he stated to the press.

“Even his older brother came to Turkey. The transfer was almost complete. Just then, when Lampard went to Everton, he messed up for us.”

The Verdict: Surprise…

A move to Turkey on loan certainly would’ve come as a surprise given Alli’s big name status and we’re sure a second chance of shining in the Premier League at Everton is far more appealing to the 25-year-old.

The question remains as to whether he can rediscover his once imperious form which prompted Lilywhites chairman Daniel Levy to place a sky-high £100 million price tag on his head back in 2016.

Having scored a career total 91 goals, even before his mid-20s, the quality is certainly there with Lampard now tasked with bringing it back to the forefront and saving Alli’s career.

Kamran Akmal denies allegations

Kamran Akmal has defended his shoddy performance in the Sydney Test, during Pakistan’s disastrous tour of Australia, following speculation that there may have been more to his misses than just cricketing errors

Kamran Akmal, the Pakistan wicketkeeper, has defended his shoddy performance in the Sydney Test during Pakistan’s disastrous tour of Australia, following speculation that there may have been more to his misses than just cricketing errors.”I don’t even think about these things, I just concentrate on my performances,” Akmal said. “For me not being able to win the Twenty20 World Cup despite the team playing well is heartbreaking enough.”I have always played for my country and I have already told the PCB about my performances in Australia. Whoever is now making allegations is free to do so but must also prove them.”Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, said there was no evidence of any match-fixing and the issue was closed. “The Australian tour chapter is now closed and we have finished our inquiry. We have found no evidence of any match-fixing during the tour.”Akmal was one of seven players punished by the PCB following the tour of Australia. He dropped three catches and missed a run out as Pakistan lost the Sydney Test despite being in a position of dominance after the first innings. In a recent video leak, Intikhab Alam and Aaqib Javed, coach and assistant coach during the tour, expressed doubt over Akmal’s performance in that match. The ICC’s ACSU is currently investigating the tour to establish whether Pakistan’s performance was the result of what it called a “dysfunctional” team or “something more serious”.
