Celtic: Alex McLeish reacts to Jota update

Former Scotland manager Alex McLeish has been reacting to rumours of a permanent swoop from Celtic for loanee Jota, as per Football Insider.

The Lowdown: January move

Jota has proven to be an inspired signing for the Hoops, contributing to 14 goals in his 18 appearances in green and white.

The 22-year-old is currently out due to a hamstring injury, but as reported by Sky Sports, Celtic are expected to trigger their £6.5m option to make his loan permanent.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-18/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Hoops are set to do just that before the summer, so a January move is a real possibility.

The Latest: McLeish reacts

McLeish, who regularly contributes for BBC Radio 5 Live, was talking to Football Insider regarding the update on Jota.

Here is what he had to say in reply, admitting that he is ‘very surprised’ about a January move for the winger, who he called a ‘game-changer’:

“When he came in at first, I thought work in progress. Probably a work in progress for the Portuguese team to take him back after the loan spell.

“Very surprised that they’re willing to let him go in January, given the form that he’s been in. He really has expressed himself as a very good technical player. He’s taken people on, scored goals, worked hard.

“These are all the traits a manager loves in individual players, especially when he can change the game with his skills. As we say, a game-changer.

“If Celtic can buy him, he’s a very good, young, potentially great player.”

The Verdict: Celtic making their mark

Should Celtic complete a permanent transfer in the region of £6.5m, it would be the most expensive signing of the Ange Postecoglou era, surpassing Kyogo Furuhashi’s £4.86m move over the summer. However, even though it would take a relatively big fee, it could prove to be a steal in the long run.

You’d expect that Jota is still far from his prime at the age of 22, so a long-term deal could see his valuation increase past the £6.5m mark should he continue to impress in Glasgow.

Celtic could reap the rewards with impressive displays on the pitch and eventually go on to make a big profit on the Portuguese attacker when the time is right, in the likely event that wealthier clubs submit a tempting offer.

Hampshire target Warne for Twenty20

Hampshire are in discussions to sign Shane Warne, their former captain, for next season’s Twenty20 Cup

Cricinfo staff20-Nov-2009Hampshire are in discussions to sign Shane Warne, their former captain, for next season’s Twenty20 Cup. Warne led Hampshire from 2004 to 2007 and Rod Bransgrove, the chairman, confirmed that the club had made an approach.”Warne is the biggest name we’ve ever had at the club and, yes, we have spoken to him,” he told the . “You can never rule out getting Warne back to Hampshire, although he’s very busy and I wonder whether he’d get out of bed for the money we can offer.”Since retiring from international cricket in 2007, Warne has captained Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, winning the inaugural event with a young and relatively unknown side. He is also involved in a host of other activities, starring in the TV commentary box in this year’s Ashes, as well as playing international poker tournaments. In an effort to raise the profile of England’s Twenty20 Cup competition, counties will be able to include four overseas players in their squads next season but only two will be allowed in each game. Middlesex signed Adam Gilchrist earlier in the week and are hoping to sign Sachin Tendulkar.Hampshire, have already secured Ajantha Mendis, the Sri Lanka spinner, creating the prospect of an exciting pairing with Warne, but Bransgrove said Hampshire have other options.”Hampshire have also had talks with other big-name players that are reasonably well advanced. I’ve been talking about the potential of Twenty20 for some time and getting these superstars in is what it’s all about.”

Newcastle: Fabian Schar lets Howe down

Doom and gloom seem to enshroud Newcastle United at the moment and when you face some of the Premier League’s big boys, proceedings are only going to get worse for Eddie Howe.

When PIF’s takeover from Mike Ashley was confirmed, there was radiant hope for a better future for the Toon but things are only getting worse, even with a new manager at the helm.

Ashley and Bruce are both gone and there is huge significant backing within the club but the fact of the matter is, they still sit 19th in the Premier League with a solitary win to their name.

The January transfer window can’t come quick enough for the Magpies but convincing players to join will be an arduous task.

It’s becoming increasingly evident, however, that Howe will need to improve his squad, particularly in defence.

The likes of Niklas Sule, Sven Botman and Lloyd Kelly have all been linked and any one of them would surely be better than the current centre-half pairing of Jamal Lascelles and Fabian Schar.

Tweeting during the club’s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Thursday, journalist Luke Edwards said: “Hayden isn’t good enough at this level. Ritchie isn’t. Schar & Lascelles aren’t PL pairing. These are 4 most obvious replacements needed in Jan.”

Lascelles has struggled for a while now and as the current captain, that is a worrying trend. However, his defensive partner in Schar is also proving to be a liability on a regular basis.

He was fortunate not to give away a penalty at one stage when he sent Sadio Mane tumbling inside the area, only for the loose ball to fall the way of Mo Salah who found the back of the net.

But it was his strength and discipline that was of most concern. A player so used to bringing the ball forward from the back and playing the ball out, he was horrendous in this regard on Thursday.

The Switzerland international had fewer touches of the ball than Martin Dubravka and surrendered possession every 2.7 touches he took.

Furthermore, Schar completed just 52% of his passes – 11 in total – and was extremely lightweight in physical situations.

He won only one of his six defensive duels – a loss rate of 83%. Once described as a “danger” in the past by Alan Shearer for his offensive ability, he certainly lived up to that tag this week but from a negative point of view.

Poor performances have been a constant trend for the centre-back, who put in a similarly lacklustre display vs Burnley. Per SofaScore, he lost 11 of his 13 duels and only completed 42% of his attempted passes, losing possession 20 times in the process.

With that in mind, Howe would be very wise to replace him over the winter because at the moment, he is betraying his manager.

'The ability was always there' – John Wright

Former New Zealand batsman John Wright, who coached India for five years, has praised their elevation to the No. 1 spot in the ICC Test rankings

John Wright, who coached India for five years, has praised their elevation to the No. 1 spot in the ICC Test rankings. Wright, who along with former captain Sourav Ganguly brought a more professional outlook towards fitness and training and touring overseas, pinpointed the team’s unity and all-round depth as key features to the pinnacle as well as the future.”India deserves this … not only the players and the board but also the fans,” he told . “I always knew that India has the ability to become the best Test team in the world. I’m so pleased for the players, Gary [Kirsten], Paddy [Upton] and the BCCI. I know the board is a tough task master but it is fantastic. I’m very pleased for your country. They are the best in the world and they truly understand and celebrate their cricketers’ success.”Wright, a former New Zealand batsman, had a successful five-year stint as India’s coach from November 2000 during which India won a historic series against Australia in 2001 at home, won in Pakistan in 2003, and also guided the team to the finals of the 2003 World Cup.There have been many key steps to the summit for India, not least the epic 2001 home series against Australia. Wright played down the Kolkata Test of that series, which many believe instilled the belief in India that they could be the best. “The ability to bring about a turnaround was always there. The theme was to achieve team achievement as against individual achievements,” he said. “There are great individual achievements but in a funny way today’s achievement is greater than any of those.”The key for India is to have potent fast bowlers. That way Zaheer Khan and Sreesanth are very important for the side. But the best thing about India is that they are not reliant on any one player. A few individuals will soon go away but every young Indian cricketer now knows that the team can be the No.1. That is the turnaround.”The lack of Tests in India’s upcoming schedule could limit the duration of their No. 1 ranking, and Wright said the challenge for India would be to maintain their position. “They first have to enjoy it and then take up the challenge. In India everything is there in the system – they have the structure and the academy. Now they have to keep producing the players. I think they can stay at the No.1 spot.”Former captain Anil Kumble, writing in the , said India had planned reaching the top spot two years ago. “You can imagine the feeling among all concerned now that the task has been achieved,” he wrote. “Back then, we knew that in the next 18 months or so we would play almost every team in the world, either home or away. We made a conscious effort to sit down and discuss the way to the top. The team goal was simple. We were fifth in the rankings and said to ourselves: ‘Let’s go out there and win every series from here on, as that is the only route to the top.'”Kumble singled out “exceptional” individual performances along the way, which he termed as “not an easy ride”, that contributed to victories and hard-earned draws. “Gautam Gambhir’s batting for almost two days to save the Napier Test against New Zealand, Virender Sehwag’s start during the run chase at Chennai against England, Sachin and Yuvi’s efforts in the same Test, Rahul, Sourav and Laxman’s holding the innings together time and again – these are prime examples.”
