Paterson must start for Sheff Weds v Cheltenham

Sheffield Wednesday’s latest League One outing saw them secure a third consecutive draw with a 1-1 result against Lincoln City at the weekend.

Owls midfielder Dennis Adeniran put the home side ahead ten minutes into the second half before the Imps grabbed an equaliser through Lewis Montsma in the 80th minute.

On the chalkboard

Looking ahead to Wednesday’s weekend clash against Cheltenham Town where Darren Moore will undoubtedly be hoping to secure a win this time out, one player that was not in the starting XI to face Lincoln that we think should be for their next encounter is 27-year-old striker Callum Paterson.

The 27-year-old replaced Lee Gregory in the second half of the match at the weekend and managed to have one shot at goal, completed seven of his nine passes and won one aerial duel, ultimately earning him an overall match rating of 6.6/10 according to SofaScore.

Wednesday signed Paterson back in September 2020 from Cardiff City for an undisclosed fee. Since then, the striker, who is currently valued at £1.62m according to Transfermarkt has made 57 appearances for the Yorkshire club, scoring 11 goals and providing five assists along the way, proving himself to be a fairly decent signing for the Owls based on his attacking output.

So far this season, Paterson, who has been described as “phenomenal” by Robbie Neilson, has managed to score two goals and provide one assist in 11 League One appearances showing he has what it takes to pop up at the right time and place for the Owls, leading us to believe he could bully Cheltenham’s defenders if given the chance to.

Looking ahead to the match at the weekend, in terms of who Paterson could replace in the team if Moore thinks his side would have a better chance of picking up all three points with him in, we feel that it could be a good time for Gregory to come out of the side for a while considering he had a poor game against Lincoln where he failed to even register one shot at goal in 62 minutes.

Whether Moore decides to stick Paterson back in the team at the weekend or not, we feel that Wednesday will need to get a win under their belts soon so they can stay in the running for a promotion place by the end of the campaign or else they could be facing another season in League One.

IPL teams hope to field Pakistan players again

IPL franchises hope that players from the victorious Pakistan team will be available to play in the league next year

Sohail Tanvir could represent Rajasthan Royals at Lord’s next month•AFP

Pakistan’s title win in the ICC World Twenty20 has sparked a buzz among the IPL franchises who are now hoping that players from the victorious team will be available to play in the league next year. It may happen sooner rather than later: Sohail Tanvir could play for his IPL franchise next month, when Rajasthan Royals, the 2008 champions, play Middlesex at Lord’s in a one-off game.Manoj Badale, the Royals co-owner, told Cricinfo that Tanvir, who was part of Rajasthan’s IPL-winning team last year, will play the game on July 6, “subject to availability”. The match between Rajasthan and Middlesex Panthers, last year’s English Twenty20 champions, will take place two days before the first Ashes Test and is being organised by the British Asian Trust. Pakistan are scheduled to start their Test series against Sri Lanka in Galle on July 4 but Tanvir does not figure in the 15-member national squad.Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, is clear that the league has “no problems” letting Pakistani players play the next edition in India in March 2010 but said it’s for the governments of the two countries to decide. And franchise officials are now hoping for some clarity to emerge on the issue after political tensions between India and Pakistan prevented those players from participating in this year’s competition.Joy Bhattacharya, team director of Kolkata Knight Riders, said all the IPL teams would “definitely welcome them back” if Pakistan players were made available next year. Amrit Mathur, chief operating officer of Delhi Daredevils, said they would “look at recruiting more players” from the World Twenty20-winning team, if such an opportunity arose. Ray Jennings, coach of Royal Bangalore Challengers, said that the return of Pakistan players would be a “very good thing” that will strengthen the system.Eleven Pakistani players, including Shahid Afridi and Umar Gul, the stars of Pakistan’s World Twenty20 campaign, were recruited by the Kolkata, Rajasthan, Delhi, Hyderabad and Bangalore franchises before the inaugural IPL. However, the franchises opted to retain the contracts of only four of them – Akmal and Tanvir (Rajasthan), Misbah-ul-Haq (Bangalore) and Gul (Kolkata) – after it became clear that they would not be able to play in the second season of the league.Even these four contracts are on a suspended status after the terror attacks in Mumbai last year led to a chill in political ties between India and Pakistan. In fact, no Pakistani team has been invited for this October’s Champions League, the multi-nation, inter-club competition jointly organised by the boards of India, South Africa and Australia. “We have no problems in letting the Pakistan players play,” Modi, who is also chairman of Champions League, told Cricinfo. “It’s for the two governments to decide. The Pakistan government has to clear their players to play in India and the Indian government has to allow them to play here.””We have always wanted the Pakistani players,” Bhattacharya said. “Gul, especially, is a valuable player for Kolkata. Why only Kolkata? I am sure every IPL team would welcome them back. But we are aware that there are extraneous factors that will influence any decision on this issue.”Kolkata also had Shoaib Akhtar and Salman Butt in their squad in 2008 but chose to terminate the two contracts. “Pakistan has some of the best Twenty20 players and the title win in England only proved that,” Bhattacharya said. “To a large extent, the format suits players from Pakistan. Fast swing bowling and natural, uncomplicated batting is what Twenty20 demand and Pakistan have those.”Mathur said that Delhi hoped for clarity to emerge on the issue soon. “We had two Pakistan players in the first year and if they are made available next year, we will look at signing more players from the Pakistan team,” he said.Delhi had signed Shoaib Malik, the former Pakistan captain, and fast bowler Mohammad Asif in 2008 but terminated both contracts. Asif’s contract was terminated after the player was banned for a year following an adverse dope result during the inaugural IPL edition.Deccan Chargers, the IPL champions this year, had signed Shahid Afridi for US$675,000 in 2008 but chose to terminate his contract this year when they were informed that he would not be allowed to play. “There is no point looking back,” PK Iyer, the managing director of Chargers’ parent company, Deccan Holdings, said. “The South Africans were the flavour of the season this year, and it could be the Pakistanis next time. But it is not in our hands.”Jennings, who coached Bangalore to the IPL final this year, said that Misbah is a “key player” for his team. “It would be a very good thing if they are made available,” Jennings said. “The more players that are available, the better it is for the system. But having said that, it is not for me to decide.”Rajasthan, meanwhile, were keen to field Akmal, too, at Lord’s next month but the wicket-keeper has been named in the Pakistan squad for the Test series against Sri Lanka and will not be available for the charity game. The Royals had also signed up Younis Khan last year but opted to terminate his contract later. On Sunday though, the Pakistan captain turned his back on the Indian league and announced that he won’t play the Twenty20 format any longer.

Wolves handed major injury boost

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been handed a major injury boost ahead of their upcoming Premier League clash.

What’s the latest?

According to a report by BBC Sport, Willy Boly – who is yet to feature under Bruno Lage in the Premier League this season – is once again available for selection for the visit of Everton on Monday evening, as the centre-back has recovered from an illness which ruled him out of the 1-1 draw with Leeds United last weekend.

However, the report also goes on to confirm that Fernando Marcal will miss out once more due to a calf injury, while Everton will conduct late fitness tests on Yerry Mina, Fabian Delph and Andre Gomes, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucoure are unavailable for the Toffees.

Fans will be buzzing

While Boly has not exactly been an ever-present figure in the Wolves backline this season, the news that the defender looks set to make a return to action against the Toffees on Monday night will nevertheless have the Molineux faithful buzzing.

Indeed, last season, the £9m-rated man highly impressed over his 21 Premier League appearances, helping his side keep six clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.5 interceptions, 1.6 tackles, four clearances and winning 4.8 duels per game.

The Ivory Coast international also chipped in going forwards, scoring one goal, registering one assist and creating one big chance for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 0.7 shots per game.

These returns saw the £46k-per-week centre-back earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.91, ranking him as Wolves’ seventh-best performer in the top flight of English football.

As such, it is clear that, when given the opportunity, Boly can be an extremely important part of the Wolves backline, something that means, considering just how short of options Lage currently is in the position, the 30-year-old’s return is a major boost for the club ahead of the Everton clash.

Pietersen experienced pain at IPL

Kevin Pietersen’s participation in the IPL will come under further scrutiny after it emerged his Achilles injury deteriorated while on duty with the Royal Challengers Bangalore

Kevin Pietersen’s participation in the IPL will come under further scrutiny after it emerged his Achilles injury deteriorated while on duty with the Royal Challengers Bangalore. According to Evan Speechly, Bangalore’s assistant coach and physiotherapist, Pietersen experienced pain in his right Achilles while jogging along Durban’s beachfront during the IPL. He has experienced ongoing problems in ensuing series against West Indies and Australia, and this week underwent surgery that will sideline him from the final three Tests of the Ashes series.”He woke up one morning and decided to go for a run along the beachfront in Durban,” Speechly told Cricinfo. “It was after that he felt the twinge.’The ECB, who dispatched senior medical officers Simon Timson and Nick Pierce to South Africa to monitor their IPL-contracted players, outlined a revised training plan for Pietersen, the Bangalore captain, which the franchise’s medical staff strictly enforced. An ECB spokesperson yesterday described as “blatantly untrue” suggestions Pietersen had been ordered to refrain from running during his stint with Bangalore.”Pietersen reported to Loughborough before he flew out to South Africa and was passed fit to join up with Bangalore,” the spokesman said. “ECB medical staff sent Bangalore a fitness programme and at no stage did Kevin Pietersen do anything to contradict that and at no stage was he told not to go running.”Kevin Pietersen is the most diligent and responsible of trainers and prides himself on his physical fitness and preparation for playing cricket. The ECB medical staff hold him as one of the best examples of a player who does everything within his power to achieve maximum fitness to play cricket.”Player participation in the IPL has been a sensitive topic in England since Andrew Flintoff damaged his knee playing for Chennai Super Kings; an injury that ruled out of the Test and one-day series against West Indies as well as the ICC World Twenty20. The issue also flared in Australia when Matthew Hayden, another Chennai-contracted player, damaged his Achilles during the inaugural IPL season in 2008, and missed the ensuing tour of the Caribbean.Hayden’s Achilles eventually recovered, but the same could not be said of his international career. The veteran opener averaged just 23.93 in nine Tests after returning from the injury and, despite harbouring ambitions to play through to the end of this Ashes series, announced his retirement in January. Despite the obvious setback, Hayden did not believe the IPL posed an undue health risk to players.”It was unfortunate,” Hayden told Cricinfo during the 2009 IPL. “I picked up that injury doing a running session because I wanted to be spot on for that West Indies tour. I came back [from the IPL] on a real high, not realising how bad the injury was. It didn’t feel all that serious, and I wasn’t expecting to miss any games let alone an entire Test series, so it wasn’t until later that I realised what I was actually dealing with. But I don’t look back on [the inaugural IPL] as a negative. If anything I found that really reinvigorated me and revived my enthusiasm, because you could feel you were a part of taking cricket to another level.”Meanwhile, Sean Morris, the chief executive of the Professional Cricketers’ Association, warned the ECB against persecuting nationally-contracted players who sought to pursue opportunities in lucrative domestic Twenty20 leagues. Morris said that the crammed international schedule was already pushing players, including Flintoff, towards early international retirements and into the seductive embrace of tournaments such as the IPL.”I can see the day of the freelance cricketer with players turning down England contracts,” Morris told the . “That’s the way the market will go and it’s very dangerous. Andrew Flintoff has already made the choice to concentrate on one-day cricket and others will make similar decisions earlier and earlier in their careers. That does not bode well for the ECB, the PCA or anybody. We all want the best players to appear in Test cricket.”I’ve seen the ICC’s Future Tours Programme from 2012-2020. It’s unbelievable. The players won’t be able to do it. England will need two squads picked on a rotation basis. Fast bowlers in particular are going to be broken. Players will be drained mentally as well as physically.”
