– Temos o time praticamente todo definido, Trauco e Guerrero voltam.

– Preocupação é geral, sabemos do poder do Fluminense.

The West Indies captain, Chris Gayle, has admitted that Pakistan are probably favourites going into their one-day series which kicks off tomorrow, but is confident that his recent experience in the Stanford Super Series stands his side in good stead for the future. The series sees the return of Pakistan’s explosive fast bowler, Shoaib Akhtar, who will play his first one-dayer for more than a year. “He is always the key factor,” Gayle said. “He is a wicket-taking bowler in a strong Pakistan pace attack.”Akhtar, 33, has been battling injuries for some time but returned to the squad in August for a Twenty20 tournament in Canada. He heads a five-man pace attack for the West Indies series.”Besides Akhtar, they have Umer Gul, and backed by a strong batting line-up they are a very tough team, but if we compete well we can sneak a win in the first game for a good start,” said Gayle. “We know it will be a tough challenge because Pakistan always play well in one-day cricket and since we have not played here and Pakistan have, they have the home advantage.”Pakistan beat Sri Lanka 2-1 in Abu Dhabi last year, and they shared a two-match series against arch rivals India the year before.Nevertheless, spirits in the West Indies camp are high after Gayle led an all-star team to a ten-wicket thrashing of England in the Stanford 20/20 for 20 final in Antigua earlier this month, earning millions of dollars in the process.”Beating England was nice and we worked really hard for that. Now it’s a new series and every series is important for us, no matter who the opponent is, and winning this one will give us more confidence.”We have some exciting newcomers like Lionel Baker, who played in Canada, then we have Shawn Findlay and Brendan Nash, so these guys have an opportunity to prove themselves against [good opponents].”Gayle’s opposite number, Shoaib Malik, was hopeful Akhtar could rediscover that devastating pace which made him so dangerous a few years ago, but insisted Pakistan won’t be relying solely on him.”Akhtar is bowling in good rhythm. It is important that he performs, but we have a balanced attack, and it will be important that we play to our potential,” said Malik, whose captaincy tenure is under review by the Pakistan Cricket Board. “I am as relaxed as ever and there is no captaincy pressure on me. I have my own way and always look for improvement in all areas.”

LFC fans plead with Bellingham to join

Many Liverpool fans have flocked to a tweet from Jude Bellingham following England’s 4-0 win over Andorra on Sunday.

The 18-year-old started the game alongside two Reds players in midfield, with Jordan Henderson in the middle of a three and Trent Alexander-Arnold trialled on the right.

How did Bellingham perform on Sunday?

As per Squawka, the teenager recorded a pass accuracy of 96%, won seven duels and created three chances over the course of his 62 minutes on the pitch. Andorra ought to be considered minnows given their world ranking of 156, but Bellingham’s performance attracted rave reviews nonetheless.

“Only Andorra but Bellingham’s class is clear,” The Times’ Chief Football Writer Henry Winter tweeted, while fellow sports journalist Harry Roy gushed: “The more I watch Jude Bellingham play, the more I understand why Birmingham retired his shirt number when he left. The kid is generational.”

Could Liverpool lure him to Anfield?

The 18-year-old still has the best part of four years to run on his Borussia Dortmund contract and has seen his Transfermarkt value rise to £49.5m.

Bellingham has previously revealed that Anfield icon Steven Gerrard is one of his footballing ‘heroes’, and that ‘all I wanted’ was one of his number 8 shirts (via Bundesliga.com), while the Reds were tentatively linked with the teenager during the summer.

Liverpool fans flock to Bellingham’s tweet

In response to Bellingham’s post-match tweet, a number of Liverpool fans implored the 18-year-old to follow Jurgen Klopp in swapping Dortmund for Merseyside.

Former coach happy with Amla's progress

Hylton Ackerman, the former Western Province captain who first spotted Hashim Amla’s talent, has said he is happy with the progress his former charge has been making. Amla had a slow start to his Test career but has had a great 2008, making 1012 including three centuries.”People used to make a big fuss about his backlift and say he’d never crack it as a top player,” Ackerman, who also coached him at the Under-19 and A levels, told . “He’s proved them wrong – it has barely changed since he was a kid.”Amla’s average was a poor 22 at the end of 2006, it jumped to 32 by the end of the next year and is now a respectable 40, and the constant improvement came in for praise from Ackerman. “He’s not static, and it’s to his credit that he’s lifted his standards both as a batsman playing all around the wicket and as a fielder too – he used to be pretty poor in that department but he’s excellent now.”Amla started the Australian tour with an unbeaten century in a one-day warm-up game against Western Australia and Ackerman felt the series would be a big challenge. “He is still finding his way against the short ball from genuinely fast bowlers, and I will be glued to my TV to see how he handles the Brett Lee barrage in the Tests.”England certainly tested Amla against the bouncer as well this year, and he bobbed and weaved and dropped his wrists rather well – but those pitches are also slower than Australian ones.”I think if Hashim gets through the Lee trial he will be up and away in Oz. I have no problem with his decision not to attempt the hook shot, and rather to concentrate on his (evasive tactics).”The first Test starts on Wednesday in Perth, on what is expected to be the fastest surface of the series.

Struijk’s Leeds ban tipped to be overturned

Leeds United’s Pascal Struijk’s red card against Liverpool has not been overturned, to the surprise of former Premier League striker, now Sky Sports pundit, Kevin Campbell.

The Lowdown: Struijk ban appealed

The Leeds United centre-back was dismissed in Sunday’s 3-0 defeat at home to the Reds, following a tackle which dislocated Harvey Elliott’s ankle.

It was a horrible incident, but there was a feeling that the sending off was harsh given the unfortunate nature of the injury – Elliott himself has sent a message of support to Struijk – and the Whites subsequently appealed the decision.

However, Phil Hay has confirmed the FA have rejected the appeal, so the defender will miss the next three matches.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359346″]

The Latest: ‘If I’m honest…’

Speaking to Football Insider just before news of the rejection broke, Campbell admitted the ‘damage’ may be why Struijk’s red card will stand, but ultimately decided the right call would have been to overturn it:

“The issue is not the tackling leg, it is the trailing leg. It is the trailing leg that usually does the damage.

“Yes, he didn’t mean to do it. We know that. But, the injury to Harvey Elliott is a serious one so I can understand why he got sent off.

“After the event, when you actually look at it, I can see it being rescinded. If I’m honest, I can see it being rescinded.

“Struijk did not go in to do any damage like that. He went in to win the ball and his trailing leg caught him.

“The damage was horrific. It’s for that reason I would understand a decision either way. I don’t like sitting on the fence normally.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-15/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Should be ovcrturned

The fact that Elliott himself has come out and said it shouldn’t have been a red card suggests that justice should have prevailed with Struijk.

There is an argument to say that his lunge was endangering a fellow player, but he still won the ball and far more reckless challenges go unpunished – just look at James Tarkowski’s challenge on Richarlison on Monday night.

There was no intent to hurt Elliott on Struijk’s part and it is a surprise that his ban isn’t overturned, meaning he will now miss matches against Newcastle, Fulham in the cup and West Ham.

'Flintoff and I supported Pietersen' – Harmison

Steve Harmison has termed as “nonsense” reports that he and other senior England players, including Andrew Flintoff and Andrew Strauss, supported sacked coach Peter Moores ahead of Kevin Pietersen

Steve Harmison has termed as “nonsense” reports that he and other senior England players, including Andrew Flintoff and Andrew Strauss, supported sacked coach Peter Moores ahead of Kevin Pietersen. Harmison wrote in his column for the that the reported leak from team sources resulted in Pietersen’s resignation as England captain and left Moores without a job.”I can say without a moment’s hesitation that both Fred [Flintoff] and I supported Kevin as our captain and our leader, Strauss has already made his backing for Kevin quite clear and any suggestion that we turned against him when Hugh Morris, the managing director of England cricket, rang us for our views over the crisis is rubbish,” said Harmison.”The idea that we told Morris that we supported Peter Moores ahead of Kevin is nonsense. To my mind, the only people who have stabbed Kevin in the back are those who chose to leak the information that he had promised to quit the captaincy for the tour to the West Indies if Peter remained as coach.”According to Harmison, Pietersen decided to relinquish the England captaincy after “all attempts to resolve a growing problem had failed”. It was a decision that could have been avoided, felt Harmison.”We may never discover how that information then reached the public domain, but once that train was running, there was no way of stopping it,” said Harmison. “Yet my belief is that had the row stayed in-house, there might still have been a chance for Morris to get Peter and Kevin together to thrash out the issue, and a hugely upsetting and damaging breakdown might have been avoided.”Maybe if Kevin and Peter had tried one last time to find common ground in private – without the pressure of the story having been made public and everyone and his dog airing their often misinformed opinions – a different outcome might have taken place.”Harmison, who confronted Pietersen after he was dropped for the Mohali Test against India, refused to accept the notion of a dressing-room rift, with players in one camp or another. “That is exactly what I told Hugh Morris when he was canvassing opinion this week,” he said.Harmison played down the rift between Pietersen and Flintoff. “Anyone who truly believes Fred was not behind KP should have been in Mohali,” he said. “Fred tried his nuts off in the first Test in Chennai, then, only a few days later in a match that was almost certain to be a draw, he was still putting the ball down the other end at in the 24th and 25th overs of the second innings. Every time Kevin asked him for another effort he gave everything, and with a supposedly weak ankle.”
