Man City miss out on Andre Silva

Manchester City’s hopes of signing Andre Silva this summer are over after the Portuguese international agreed on a move to Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, the striker will join RB Leipzig from fellow German side Eintracht Frankfurt this summer, following a superb campaign that saw him hit 29 goals in all competitions.

Only Robert Lewandowski scored more goals than the 25-year-old in the German top-flight last season, so it was no surprise when Manchester City were linked with his signing, as a potential alternative to the more expensive options of Harry Kane and Erling Haaland.

City are very much in the market for a striker this summer as they look to replace the legendary Sergio Aguero after he joined Barcelona, and Silva could well have added the instinctual finishing tht Guardiola’s side lacked on a number of occasions last season.

Whilst they ran away with the Premier League title and sealed their customary Carabao Cup trophy, they fell short in the FA Cup and Champions League and arguably need a more clinical finisher than Gabriel Jesus next season if they are to achieve their aspirations in Europe.

After signing permanently from AC Milan last summer following an impressive loan spell, the “phenomenal” Silva was in sensational form last season, contributing 28 goals and five assists in just 32 Bundesliga appearances, averaging a superb 7.51 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

This was enough to rank him as the fifth-best player in the German top-flight last season, so certainly could have been a strong addition to Guardiola’s side this summer, especially when you consider that Ilkay Gundogan finished as City’s top scorer in the Premier League with just 13 goals.

Unfortunately for Guardiola, Silva will be plying his trade at the Red Bull Arena next season, and the Spanish manager will surely be gutted that another of City’s potential striker targets is no longer available.

Everton linked with Mikkel Damsgaard

Everton are the latest Premier League side to be linked with a move for Sampdoria star Mikkel Damsgaard after his superb performances at Euro 2020 for Denmark, and the 21-year-old could be a superb addition to Rafa Benitez’s side this summer.

What’s the word?

According to Italian news outlet Calcio Mercato, Everton are showing interest in the winger this summer, along with fellow Premier League sides Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United, West Ham United, Liverpool and Leicester City.

Damsgaard was a relatively unknown quantity before the European Championships but stepped up superbly after Christian Eriksen’s incident which ruled him out of the rest of the tournament, playing a huge role as Kasper Hjulmand’s side reached the semi-finals before the 2-1 defeat against England.

The youngster would contribute two goals and one assist in five appearances for Denmark, including a superb free-kick against England at Wembley earlier this week, which helped him average an impressive 7.28 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Would he be a good signing for Everton?

With the likes of Bernard and Alex Iwobi struggling to perform on the wing for the Toffees last season, you could definitely argue that Benitez needs to add some attacking quality out wide if Everton are to challenge for a European spot next season, and Damsgaard looks to be a great option for the future.

Although he managed just two goals and four assists in 35 Serie A appearances last season, his performances for Denmark emphasise just how dangerous he can be when given starting opportunities, and there seems little to suggest that he wouldn’t be a success in the Premier League.

Danish teammate Kasper Schmeichel was full of praise for the 21-year-old after he played a starring role in their 4-1 win against Russia, which secured their place in the knockout stages, saying:

“There is no one to replace Christian Eriksen, but Mikkel .. Shut up, what a player. We have seen it in training, and the fact that he produces what he produces in the matches, it is fantastic.

“I told Mikkel Damsgaard that I had the feeling that he would score. He was so close to Belgium and played such a fantastic match, so I thought it was the perfect time for him to get his goal. Yes, he was phenomenal today.”

Therefore, Everton sporting director Marcel Brands should definitely consider a move for the £11.7m-rated Damsgaard this summer, as he looks to have a huge amount of potential and could be a quality addition to Benitez’s side for next season.

The new Toffees boss could strike gold for his new side with the Denmark international.

We lost it in the first innings, says Jayasuriya

Sanath Jayasuriya, the Sri Lankan captain, blamed the fact that his side did not get enough runs in the first innings in the second npower Test at Edgbaston for the eventual defeat by an innings and 111 runs.

Ralph Dellor02-Jun-2002Sanath Jayasuriya, the Sri Lankan captain, blamed the fact that his side did not get enough runs in the first innings in the second npower Test at Edgbaston for the eventual defeat by an innings and 111 runs.”Getting out for 162 makes it very difficult to come back. In the second innings, our batsmen got out to some good balls and they bowled very well. At the same time, some wickets were disappointing but they tried their best.”He refused to blame the toss or the conditions that favoured the Englishattack. “If I had won the toss I would have bowled but that is a matter of luck on the day. We can’t change the conditions or the wicket and just have to play.”Despite this heavy loss, the Sri Lankan captain still believes that his teamcan come back at Old Trafford. “The series is open. I think it depends on how we play in the next match. We have to take our minds off this one and play a fresh match at Old Trafford.”Coach Dav Whatmore was in no doubt that Muttiah Muralitharan would play at Old Trafford and thought his performance in this game justified his selection, even though he was not fully fit.”I think the fact that he bowled some 60 overs and took five wickets completely vindicates the decision to play him here. He has shown that he can make an impact against this opposition and I do not see any reason why he should not play in the next one.”England captain Nasser Hussain – not noted for his success with the coin -acknowledged the importance of winning the toss. “I thought we played bettercricket than them and I thought we deserved to win the game and that wasprobably helped by the fact that I finally won an important toss.”I would say that bowling them out for a second time for 272 on a flat wicket gave me most satisfaction. I have said before, when it gets flat we have struggled to bowl sides out,” he added.Much has been made of the fact that England have lost before when going into a final match in a series at Old Trafford with a one-nil lead. Hussain knows that it will not be easy this time.”Out of the three Test match venues it will be the one they were looking forward to most – Muralitharan in particular. We will have to up our game and be at our best again to beat them.”It transpires that Matthew Hoggard, the man-of-the-match, was by no meanscertain to play in the game. He arrived at Edgbaston suffering from a lack of confidence and form, and had a long chat with his captain on the eve of the Test. Hussain is an admitted admirer of the man “who would bowl through the proverbial brick wall”, but rated his chances of playing at no more than 50:50. His confidence might not have been too high after the way Hussain himself had hammered him playing for Essex against Yorkshire in a Benson and Hedges Cup quarter-final.”We knew we needed a good swing bowler here in the conditions if it got like it did here with the humidity. There were two to chose from, Cork or Hoggard, and in the end it wasn’t too difficult a decision because the younger lad will always win through and when someone has been there for you all winter like he has been and is a big trier and got a big heart, you will always stick with him.”He still has to iron out a few technical points in his bowling. He is stillnot bowling how he can do. He has to go away and iron out those problems. Like everyone, he is not always playing at one hundred per cent. There is always something creeping into you game but you just have to do your best at those times and he did that in this game.”Hoggard himself was delighted with his return of seven wickets in the match, especially after his self-doubts before it.”I was honest when I said that I was not full of confidence, so to come out of it as man-of-the-match after putting in some good performances is something to say about my character,” Hoggard said. “I now feel almost back to my best. There were times when I bowled with rhythm and it’s nice to come out with five wickets.”

5 Leeds United Players at Euro 2020

Leeds United had a wild season in the Premier League, ending up in the 9th spot. It also means they secured their place in the best football league for yet another year. The entire team worked hard the whole year, so it is no wonder that some of the players were invited to represent their native countries in Euro 2020.

The Old Continent (and the rest of the world) is all about football this summer. We are wearing football jerseys, watching games, and even playing football on a gaming console in our free time. But, being online also includes various cyber threats. Staying safe is a must, especially if you are streaming live games to your TV.

One of the best ways to protect your personal information is by using a VPN for PS4 or TV while online. The app is easy to install, and it will encrypt the data you send or receive while enjoying your favourite sport. So let’s meet 5 Leeds United players who are making an appearance in Euro 2020!

1.   Liam Cooper

Liam Cooper, the Leeds United captain, is in great form and could be an important defensive player for Scotland in the future. He made only five appearances for his national team before Euro 2020. Regardless of this, Cooper was a starter in the first game against the Chech Republic. He had a solid season in the Premier League, and Cooper likely will continue to be on Scotland’s list for upcoming tournaments.

2.   Kalvin Phillips

Even though Kalvin Phillips is an extraordinary defensive midfielder, Gareth Southgate usually prefers Rice or Henderson in this position. However, Southgate gave Phillips a chance in Euro 2020, and he didn’t regret it for a single moment. The youngster was a starter in six games so far, showing incredible talent. This player is a hard worker willing to do everything for his team. Phillips will undoubtedly be valuable for the next generation of English players and is very exciting to watch.

3.   Mateusz Klich

The Polish midfielder has been a regular in his team’s lineup for quite some time now. So it is not surprising to find him on Poland’s national team roster for Euro 2020 too. Lewandowski is their main striker and needs someone to help him out. Klich had a pretty good season in Leeds United, so he is the perfect choice for that job. These two are capable of creating excellent opportunities when paired together. Poland did prove they are a solid team but didn’t manage to get to the Round of 16 in Euro 2020.

4.   Tyler Roberts

Tyler Roberts is only 22 years old, but it is clear that he is a talented forward. Even though he is pretty young, Roberts made 15 appearances for Wales. He was included in Wales’ opening game in Euro 2020. Unfortunately, Wales was eliminated in the Round of 16, but Roberts did manage to showcase his skills in the tournament. Roberts is still a bit green, but Wales will have an incredible striker in a couple of years.

5.   Ezgjan Alioski

North Macedonia is one of the biggest surprises of Euro 2020. They have been named the biggest underdogs even before the tournament started. Indeed, this team doesn’t have many well-known names on its roster, but you have probably heard about Ezgjan Alioski. The midfielder had a good season in Leeds United and is in excellent shape right now. He made three appearances in group stages, scoring one goal for North Macedonia.

Eu estava me cobrando muito. Ela merece.

Stewart reaches another England milestone

Alec Stewart will become the first England player to make 150 appearances in one-day internationals tomorrow afternoon, when England meet India in the NatWest Series day-night match at Chester-le-Street.

Stephen Lamb03-Jul-2002Alec Stewart will become the first England player to make 150 appearances in one-day internationals tomorrow afternoon, when England meet India in the NatWest Series day-night match at Chester-le-Street.Stewart, 39, equalled Graham Gooch’s record of 118 Test caps for England at Old Trafford last month. Having scored a century there, he has taken his form into the current series, with 83 at Trent Bridge, 28 not out at Lord’s and a crucial unbeaten 38 in yesterday’s remarkable win over Sri Lanka at Headingley.Stewart has batted in a different position in each game – yesterday he came in at number eight – and has been taking advice from the England coach Duncan Fletcher on how to perform later in the innings.”I’m 39 but I’m still learning,” Stewart said. “I had a chat with Duncan on the day before the game and he gave me a few tips about batting down the order when the ball is reverse swinging – where to hit the ball and how to hit the ball.”He spoke to me about that on Monday and I practice hard and had two net sessions with Duncan standing behind talking me through certain things andtelling me to work on certain things and that helped my innings.”Where I bat is a bit like the lottery – it all depends on what number comes out of the hat. I’m really just glad to be involved because back in April I wasn’t even in the set-up.”Stewart’s recall this summer resulted from an injury to the contracted keeper, James Foster of Essex, but it is an opportunity he has grasped with characteristic firmness.”Unfortunately for James Foster and fortunately for me, his injury has given me the opportunity in both forms of cricket and I want to try and grab them.”No matter where I bat I want to do the best job I can. I’ve done alright in this tournament so far but I want to keep things going because we’re only sixmonths away from the World Cup.”If Stewart does make the World Cup it will be his fourth tournament, and he believes England now have a squad that could surprise the more pessimistic pundits.”After a win you’re always high and everything is always great, but I dobelieve we’re moving in the right direction. The selectors have given this side some continuity. The nucleus of the players are there and they may bring one more in over the next couple of tournament but this squad are sticking and gelling together as a team – we know how each other play and how we’re going to play as a team in certain situations.”In the past you would be wondering what side it would be when you turned up, but now there are 14 or 15 players in there who know each other’s games verywell.”For this next World Cup we had better make sure we prepare well, pick theright squad and play to our capabilities. If we do that and keep improving thenwe have a fair chance.”Although Stewart is England’s most-capped ODI player, he remains well down the pecking order in the global list of appearances. India’s Sachin Tendulkar hasfeatured in 290 matches, while Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya has played 260 times.”I’ve not missed many one-day games since I made my debut about 13 years ago, but I’m only just coming up to my 150,” added Stewart. “Someone similar from other countries like Pakistan or Australia would have played around 250 inthe same period.”That says a fair amount about our inexperience. The only way you can learn in this form of cricket is out in the middle – the more games you play, the more experienced you get and you recognise certain situations and know how to react.”
