Crystal Palace: Fans react to clip of Marouane Chamakh goal

Many Crystal Palace fans have been reacting to the club’s Goal of the Day post on Twitter, which on Tuesday featured Marouane Chamakh’s effort against Stoke City in 2013/14.

Currently building for the 2021/22 campaign, the south Londoners face going into pre-season without a manager following the departure of boyhood Eagles fan Roy Hodgson [Independent].

Facing the exodus of 22 first-team players after releasing their retained list at the start of June [Tribal Football], former Borussia Dortmund manager Lucien Favre now looks to be the front-runner for the Selhurst Park hotseat [The Guardian].

Of course, times are ever-changing at Crystal Palace, as rumours of a takeover also swirl in the SE25 area [Daily Mail].

Nonetheless, there is always time to revert to bygone endeavours. Upon viewing the club’s throwback tweet, loads of Palace fans took to Twitter to reminisce about the Moroccan’s effort, which was their first goal back in the Premier League in the opening weeks of the 2013/14 season.

Crystal Palace fans react:

Replying to the club’s official Twitter account, here is how some supporters summarised their thoughts on the clip:

Croy catches seven – and the selectors' eyes?

Modern selectors love the cliche about hopeful players “holding their hands up,” and today Martyn Croy, the 28-year-old Otago wicket-keeper did precisely that by equalling the New Zealand record of seven catches in an innings

Don Cameron27-Feb-2002Modern selectors love the cliche about hopeful players “holding their hands up,” and today Martyn Croy, the 28-year-old Otago wicket-keeper did precisely that by equalling the New Zealand record of seven catches in an innings.Croy took five catches when Auckland scored 309/8 yesterday and he finished off the last two Auckland wickets quickly this morning. He now shares the national record of seven catches in an innings with Robin Schofield who took seven for Central Districts against Wellington in 1964/65, Wasim Bari, for Pakistan against New Zealand in 1978/79, Bryan Young, for Northern Districts v Canterbury in 1986/87 and Ian Smith for New Zealand against Sri Lanka in 1990/91.The next record could be the 10 in a match set by Adam Gilchrist for Australia against New Zealand in 1999/00 and Chris Nevin, for Wellington against Otago in 1995/96.In passing, Croy may soon join the top rank of New Zealand ‘keepers who have 200 dismissals – he is is on 194 from 64 matches at the moment.Amid the recent shuffling of Adam Parore and Nevin into and out of the New Zealand wicket-keeping position, the fact that three years ago Croy won a place in the New Zealand touring team to England seems to have escaped notice.Croy joined the New Zealand side in England after Parore had done World Cup duty, and played first-class and one-day matches against county sides. In fact, as far back as 1994 Croy had been ear-marked for special attention. He was one of a quartet of Northern Districts ‘keepers who showed outstanding form in the early 90’s. While on a tour of Pakistan with the New Zealand Youth side, Croy was told by Robbie Lawson, the Otago opening batsman, that he could well gain a place in the Otago side if he moved to Dunedin.Croy took the chance, and he has been Otago’s first choice, apart from times recovering from injuries, ever since. Croy has gained a Bachelor of Commerce degree, and diplomas in sports management and science, and at present is doing all-round work for the Academy of Sport in Dunedin. As a curiosity Croy set his record today on the field beside the UniSport complex, Auckland’s version of the Otago Academy.

Fry tips Hammers to pick 28-goal ace over Toney - exclusive

Peterborough United Director of Football Barry Fry believes that West Ham United may decide to pursue Blackburn Rovers striker Adam Armstrong instead of Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

The Hammers have been linked with both strikers after they each enjoyed fantastic seasons in 2020/21.

Armstrong scored 28 goals in 40 games in the Championship but Blackburn were only able to seal a 15th-placed finish.

Toney, by comparison, scored 31 goals en route to Brentford’s promotion to the Premier League and also netted in the play-off final against Swansea City.

Fry believes that Toney may subsequently be out of the Hammers’ reach and feels that a deal for Armstrong will be far more affordable.

His contract is set to expire at the end of next season and he is valued at £14.4m by Transfermarkt, a figure the Irons may well find palatable this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Fry, who sold Toney to Brentford from Peterborough United, said: “There’s a lot of talk about them going for Ivan. I can see that, but I think he’ll cost too much.

“But I think Adam Armstrong, because Moyes has been so successful with the players he’s took out of the Championship, as long as the price is right, I feel they could go for him.

“They definitely need to strengthen up top in their squad.”

Apesar do resultado ruim, vimos coisas boas. Sofremos gols de bola parada, faz parte do futebol. Mesmo com a derrota, analisando a performance, tivemos até mais posse de bola – valorizou.

Hathurusingha appointed A team coach for Namibian tour

Chandika Hathurusingha, a former Sri Lanka all-rounder still playingfirst-class cricket for Moors Sports Club, has been appointed as Sri Lanka’snew A team coach after a management debacle that has seen Roshan Mahanamaresign as head coach

CricInfo22-Mar-2002Chandika Hathurusingha, a former Sri Lanka all-rounder still playingfirst-class cricket for Moors Sports Club, has been appointed as Sri Lanka’snew A team coach after a management debacle that has seen Roshan Mahanamaresign as head coach.Hathurusingha, 33, who is a highly qualified and experienced coach, willtake over the reigns with immediate effect, training the A squad for a tourto Namibia in April where they will participate in a six nation one-daytournament with Namibia, Kenya, Holland, Zimbabwe A and Canada.Graeme Labrooy, 36, a former Sri Lanka fast bowler, has also been appointedas team manager, a position he nearly took up before the Kenya tour of SriLanka in February. Both Hathurusingha and Labrooy have been employed for the tour only, although a longer contract cannot be ruled out with India A expected to tourSri Lanka in May and June. This though will depend on whether Hathurusinghasecures a playing contract in the UK.The sudden change in the A team management comes after a contractual muddlebetween former A team coach Hemantha Devpriya and his replacement Mahanamathat left both men occupying the same job.Devpriya had been replaced by the interim committee of the BCCSL late lastyear and had been asked to take over the Under 17 squad. But Devpriya, stillcontracted with the BCCSL, proved reluctant to except such a drasticdemotion. The interim committee failed to take action, with the result being a fudgedcompromise, with Devpriya the designated coach and Mahanama themanager-cum-coach during the Kenya tour. Mahanama was uncomfortable with thearrangement, despite the Kenya tour passing smoothly. After the tour, Mahanama raised his concerns and then resigned. The BCCSL,in an exasperated media release, maintained that they had resolved theissue, with Devpriya taking over the management of the Development squad, but Mahanama still refused to withdraw his resignation, for reasons thatremain unclear, although his close relationship with Devpriya, who bothschooled at Nalanda College, was reportedly a factor. The Sri Lanka A squad for Namibia, which is currently with the sportsminister awaiting clearance, will be announced shortly. The team departs inearly April with the tournament running from 7-14 April.
