Arif bowls Worcestershire towards victory

John Ward reports on the third day of the Championship match between Worcestershire and Glamorgan at New Road

John Ward at Worcester19-Jul-2008Glamorgan 279 (Rees 68, Wallace 51, Imran 5-50) and 189 for 7 (Ali 4-32) lead Worcestershire 457 for 8 by 11 runs
ScorecardImran Arif continued his dream debut with another four wickets for Worcestershire, as Glamorgan followed on and now face almost inevitable defeat, given a favourable weather forecast, on the fourth day. Glamorgan just managed to survive to the close, but they should have done better, as all their first six batsmen reached double figures, yet none made 40.Glamorgan began the day at 136 for 4 in their first innings, having lost early wickets, mainly to Imran, but on the back of an unbroken stand of 80 between Gavin Rees and Mark Wallace. Both continued confidently where they had left off, but ill fortune soon stepped in. A ball from Simon Jones struck Rees on the upper thigh, dropped to the ground and then rolled on to the wicket, dislodging a bail, before he could react. Sickened, he walked off with a worthy 68 to his name.Alex Wharf (5) did not last long, pulling a catch to long leg, but Wallace, whose cover-driving was a treat to watch, continued untroubled to his 50, which came off 72 balls. Jones was bowling with fire and determination, but so well was Wallace batting that it came as a shock when he suddenly played down the wrong line and found his leg stump cartwheeling backwards. He had made 51, and at 165 for 7 Glamorgan were now in real trouble.Despite the effectiveness of Kabir Ali and Jones, it was a surprise that Imran, after his earlier successes, was not brought on for almost an hour. After a few rather innoucuous deliveries, he suddenly breached Jason Gillespie’s defence and knocked out his leg stump for 17.He then had his first experience of outraged frustration at county level, as the new batsman David Harrison hit his next three balls each for four – two thick edges to third man and one bottom edge to fine leg off an attempted pull. He restrained his feelings well.Harrison was bowled by Matt Mason for 23 off 12 balls, and it was an interesting curiosity that, after two days without a batsmen being bowled out, four should fall that way before lunch on the third day – and more were to come. The last two wickets actually did a superb job for Glamorgan, though not quite managing to save the follow-on: the dogged James Harris (28 not out) added 33 with Harrison and finally 59 with the last man, Dean Cosker (42). Finally Vikram Solanki turned almost as a last resort to Imran, who had Cosker caught at the wicket sparring at his second ball, to end the innings at 279.Imran finished with 5 for 50, a more remarkable debut achievement in that he was mysteriously given only 10.2 overs to do it in. Jones bowled with hostility at times to take 3 for 96 in 21 overs; both these attacking bowlers leaked runs rapidly but received their just reward in terms of wickets. Glamorgan’s innings was at least entertaining, with runs coming throughout at almost four an over.Glamorgan, 178 behind, had to follow on for the fourth time in their last five matches. Openers Rees and Richard Grant struggled for survival at first, beaten at times, but refusing to surrender. This time Imran came on to bowl the sixth over, but this time the magic failed him. The scoring rate was scarcely two an over, but the openers had their job to do.Inevitably, though, it was Imran who finally broke through, in his second spell, removing both openers. Grant was trapped lbw for 22, and then Rees was comprehensively bowled for 38, the ball ripping through his hapless defences to hit the bails.Imran’s spells remained short but were now much more frequent, but he could not split David Hemp and Michael Powell, who put on 58 together before the former shouldered arms and was bowled by Kabir for 30. This was the apex, if it can be so described, of Glamorgan’s second innings to date, as minor partnerships never became major ones. Jamie Dalrymple will want to forget the shot that had him caught at the wicket off Mason for 14, while Kabir took two in an over by removing Michael Powell, caught at slip for 35, and Wharf, clean bowled. Then, in what would have been the penultimate over, their last realistic hope of losing with dignity, Wallace, was caught at the wicket off Kabir, and Glamorgan were down to 165 for 7. Worcestershire claimed the extra half-hour, with Glamorgan still 13 runs in arrears, but unfortunately for them Gillespie and Harris were not tempted by the prospect of a Sunday off. They wiped off the deficit, saving the innings defeat, but have surely only postponed the inevitable.

Ahadme flopped against Millwall

After a delightful opening day win over Fleetwood in League One last weekend, Portsmouth failed to carry on their momentum as they were sent crashing out of the League Cup by Millwall on Tuesday night.

Despite taking the lead through Reeco Hackett-Fairchild in the fourth minute, Portsmouth were unable to progress through to the next round as the Championship side ultimately showed their class. Goals from Scott Malone and George Saville, within the space of six minutes in the first half, turned the game on its head and that’s the way it stayed.

One player, in particular, who struggled was summer signing Gassan Ahadme. The Norwich loanee scored a stunning eight goals in four pre-season outings for Pompey, which helped build an air of excitement over what he could do for the club when the real stuff kicked off.

Unfortunately, he has been unable to translate his form into the competitive matches as of yet. He lined up behind John Marquis against Millwall and failed to grasp his opportunity to impress, with a nightmare performance on his second appearance for the club. SofaScore handed him a rating of 6.3, which was the second-lowest in the Pompey team – only behind Callum Johnson who was sent off.

In fact, Ahadme was so poor that he was hooked off soon after Johnson’s red card as Pompey had a re-shuffle.

Danny Cowley will be fuming with the loanee’s display, as he noticeably looked off the pace throughout his time on the pitch. To this point, Hampshire Live reporter Jonty Colman gave Ahadme a score of 5/10 after the game in his player ratings piece. He wrote:

“A tough night for the Moroccan, whose only sniff of goal came on the end of an early cross where he failed to get a shot off. Tried to do too much and was often smothered on the ball in possession. Sacrificed early in the second half when Johnson departed.”

Ahadme gave the ball away nine times despite only having 24 touches, which shows that he was not reliable with the ball at his feet. He also only won four of his 13 ground and aerial duels during the match, highlighting how he off the pace with the opposition beating him to the punch in challenges both on the ground and in the air.

You could possibly forgive all of these lapses in concentration and losses of possession if he produced a moment of magic to score or create a goal, but he did not create a single chance for his teammates.

He also had two efforts on goal and both of them were off target, which further goes to show why Cowley will be frustrated with the forward’s nightmare showing.

Romano backs Romero to Spurs

Writing on Twitter, journalist Fabrizio Romano has backed Tottenham Hotspur’s deal to sign Cristian Romero and reassured supporters that the move is in fact ‘done’ with ‘no problem’.

The Lowdown: Spurs close in on third summer signing…

Over these last two weeks, new Spurs managing director Fabio Paratici has been quite the busy figure at N17 after being tasked with developing the club’s on-field sporting operations.

His first senior summer signing, Pierluigi Gollini, impressed on his Wednesday evening debut for the club in a 2-2 pre-season friendly draw against Chelsea.

Meanwhile, young winger Bryan Gil has been tipped for big things as he arrives at Spurs from Sevilla.

Now, Romano has reassured Spurs supporters that they can look forward to the announcement of a colossal third summer signing.

The Latest: Romano backs Romero deal…

Writing on Twitter, the Italian reporter has backed Romero’s move to Tottenham whilst telling supporters that there are no issues involved.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-gossip/” title=”Tottenham latest gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He even says that the Argentine ‘will fly to London’ soon in what is a mighty boost for Spurs given their long, drawn out search for a star centre-half – which you could trace all the way back to last summer.

“To be clear. There’s no problem for Cristian Romero deal,” explained Romano on social media.

“Tottenham have reached an agreement with Atalanta since yesterday. It’s done.

“Once Demiral signs as new Atalanta centre-back (likely tomorrow), Romero will fly to London to complete his Spurs move for €55m.”

The Verdict: Good news…

New manager Nuno Espirito Santo is arguably set for his biggest boost of the summer so far with the signing of Romero from Atalanta.

He won the Serie A 2020/2021 MVP award for best defender and has been called ‘phenomenal’ by Italian football critics for his performances over this last year (Conor Clancy to This is Futbol).

Signing the 23-year-old for €55 million (£46.8m) comes as a very big coup, and the mere fact that Daniel Levy is willing to part with a huge sum to give Nuno a genuine chance at a successful rebuild should also delight fans.

Josh Griffiths agrees West Brom departure

West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Josh Griffiths has agreed a temporary move away from The Hawthorns.

What’s the latest?

In a statement posted on the Lincoln City website, the Imps confirmed that they have completed the signing of the 19-year-old shot-stopper on a season-long loan deal.

A report by The Athletic recently suggested that the England U21 international’s place in the West Brom pecking order appeared to be causing something of a problem for the club, with the uncertain future of Sam Johnstone making it difficult for Valerien Ismael to know whether or not to sanction Griffiths’ departure.

However, it appears as if this issue has now been resolved, something that the ‘keeper seemed delighted with, telling the Lincoln City website: “I spoke to some of the lads who were here last season, specifically Alex Palmer, and they all said good things about the club so it was an easy decision.

“Alex didn’t have a bad word to say, he said the lads were all great and had a real driving force and philosophy.”

Fantastic news for West Brom

With Griffiths very much appearing to have the potential to become a top drawer goalkeeper in the not too distant future, the fact that the 19-year-old will be linking up with Michael Appleton next season is fantastic news for Albion.

Indeed, with the Imps manager being well-known for placing his trust in younger players, and thus accelerating their development in the professional game – with evidence of this coming in the shape of starlets such as Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson and Manchester City’s Morgan Rogers, both of whom thrived on loan at the LNER Stadium last season and are now being tipped for Premier League moves – there would appear to be few better teams Griffiths could have joined this summer.

Furthermore, if West Brom do manage to keep hold of Johnstone upon the closure of the transfer window, prior to potentially losing the services of the England international at the end of his current contract next summer, after a season with Appleton, the £450k-rated man could well be ready to take over from the Baggies’ current number one in 12 month’s time.

As such, everything would appear to indicate that the man Michael Duff dubbed a “vital” player joining Lincoln City will be fantastic for West Brom, the Imps and the player himself.
