Sri Lanka see opportunity in India's injuries

Preview for the fourth ODI between India and Sri Lanka in Kolkata

The Preview by Jamie Alter23-Dec-2009Match factsThursday, December 24
Start time 14:30 (09:00 GMT)The absence of Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni gives the injury-hit visitors a chance to draw level in Kolkata•AFP

Big PictureThe 2-1 scoreline is not unexpected given the way India have pushed Sri Lanka to the brink in all but one game – a Twenty20 – played in the limited-overs leg of the tour. But now, with the home team missing two match-winners, a hurting Sri Lanka have a realistic chance of leveling the series. This will be the first time since MS Dhoni’s debut in 2004 that India play an ODI without him and Yuvraj Singh. Dhoni has often said that missing Yuvraj is a big blow, so how India cope with the loss of their captain and best batsman in ODIs in addition to Yuvraj will be crucial. The tour has seen so many players succumbing to injuries it’s a surprise the rest have managed to get so far. Sri Lanka have lost the services of Thilan Thushara, Muttiah Muralitharan, Dilhara Fernando and Angelo Mathews. Nuwan Kulasekara missed the Tests but returned for the shorter versions. Yuvraj had a recurrence of his finger injury and has been indefinitely ruled out. Sreesanth is yet to feature after getting the flu, while Lasith Malinga overcame it in time for the last game. Thankfully, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Virender Sehwag overcame minor scares. But there is always fear – especially among bowlers – of another injury around the corner. Three of them have shouldered the burden of carrying their respective attacks: for the hosts, the experienced duo of Harbhajan Singh (187.2 overs bowled so far) and comeback man Zaheer Khan (131) are in need of breaks. On the other hand, Sri Lanka thrust the rookie Chanaka Welegedara (126 overs) into the forefront on his first major series and he will be longing for a breather at the business end of a testing tour. This is the start of another busy season for India and there isn’t much time to think ahead. Wrapping up the series in Kolkata will allow India to rest weary players ahead of the Bangladesh tour starting January 4. Sri Lanka also feature in the tri-series that kicks off that tour but, needing to win both their remaining matches in India, cannot afford the luxury of rotation. The pitch, one that’s expected to play slow and low in the latter half, will favour India’s spinners who found rhythm and confidence in Cuttack. Chilly temperatures, the dew factor and a slow-paced track mean that the bowlers will need to produce another special performance. With bitter cold and early morning fog expected to have a telling impact in Delhi, the venue for the fifth match, India will be keen to wrap up the series here.Form guide (last five completed matches, most recent first)
India – WLWLL
Sri Lanka – LWLLL
Watch out for… Tillakaratne Dilshan v Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja: Sri Lanka’s strength lies, keeping with tradition, at the top of the order. In Tillakaratne Dilshan they have a batsman at the height of his powers, equally adept at firing in the first over and taking charge of the slog overs. A converted opener, Dilshan has acquitted himself superbly this year and his centuries in Rajkot and Cuttack kept India sweating all the way. His ability to play unconventional shots on either side of the stumps makes it critical for the spinners to plot their modus operandi against him with care. In the first match of the series, Dilshan collected 36 runs from 23 deliveries faced against Ravindra Jadeja but was more sedate against Harbhajan Singh, who allowed just 17 from 26 balls before he bowled Dilshan for 160. In the second ODI, Dilshan took 33 runs from 27 balls faced from Harbhajan, but just 18 from the 33 Jadeja bowled at him. Dilshan didn’t last long enough to face spin in Cuttack, and if the pair comes up against him tomorrow, the margin for error will be miniscule.Lasith Malinga v Virender Sehwag: Lasith Malinga’s ability to sling out top-order batsmen hasn’t been evident recently on the international stage, owing largely to the injuries that have restricted him to just 10 ODIs in 2009. In the absence of Muttiah Muralitharan and Dilhara Fernando, Sri Lanka’s most experienced bowler has to deliver early if Sri Lanka want to keep Virender Sehwag quiet. Fast bowlers have accounted for Sehwag in his last nine innings, and getting him out early in every game was crucial to Australia’s recent series win in India. On his comeback in Cuttack, Malinga’s first over cost 16 with Sehwag blasting three fours. Sehwag was dismissed by Chanaka Welegedara and didn’t get a chance to face Malinga further, but sparks could fly if they face off in Kolkata.Team newsVirat Kohli will step in for Yuvraj and hope to build on his impressive 54 last week.India: 1 Virender Sehwag (capt), 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Ashish Nehra.Sri Lanka don’t have any new fitness worries but they need to address their middle-order problems. Chamara Kapugedera struggled for fluency in Cuttack before a loose shot sent him back, and Sri Lanka should really reconsider Sanath Jayasuriya over Thilan Samaraweera not least because of the left-arm spinning option he creates.Sri Lanka: 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt/wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Sanath Jayasuriya/Chamara Kapugedera, 6 Thilina Kandamby, 7 Nuwan Kulasekara, 8 Suraj Randiv, 9 Lasith Malinga, 10 Ajantha Mendis, 11 Chanaka Welegedara.Pitch and conditionsKolkata’s Eden Gardens is set to host an ODI after nearly three years. It last hosted an ODI in February 2007, when Sri Lanka toured India for a short series before the World Cup. The dew factor is expected to play a large role and with a 2.30pm start, and the sun setting fairly early, the teams could have some slippery conditions while fielding under lights.Stats and triviaThe highest ODI total at the Eden Gardens is Sri Lanka’s 309 in 49.4 overs against Pakistan in 1997.Head-to-head in Kolkata, India and Sri Lanka have each won and lost a game, with the third being ruined by February rain. The largest margin of victory in an ODI at this venue is India’s 102-run win over West Indies in in 1993.Quotes”We have to get back to scoring runs so that we can put pressure on the opposition. It does not matter what team you are. If you are under pressure, you will lose wickets. Good sides make their own luck.”

Hampshire target Warne for Twenty20

Hampshire are in discussions to sign Shane Warne, their former captain, for next season’s Twenty20 Cup

Cricinfo staff20-Nov-2009Hampshire are in discussions to sign Shane Warne, their former captain, for next season’s Twenty20 Cup. Warne led Hampshire from 2004 to 2007 and Rod Bransgrove, the chairman, confirmed that the club had made an approach.”Warne is the biggest name we’ve ever had at the club and, yes, we have spoken to him,” he told the . “You can never rule out getting Warne back to Hampshire, although he’s very busy and I wonder whether he’d get out of bed for the money we can offer.”Since retiring from international cricket in 2007, Warne has captained Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, winning the inaugural event with a young and relatively unknown side. He is also involved in a host of other activities, starring in the TV commentary box in this year’s Ashes, as well as playing international poker tournaments. In an effort to raise the profile of England’s Twenty20 Cup competition, counties will be able to include four overseas players in their squads next season but only two will be allowed in each game. Middlesex signed Adam Gilchrist earlier in the week and are hoping to sign Sachin Tendulkar.Hampshire, have already secured Ajantha Mendis, the Sri Lanka spinner, creating the prospect of an exciting pairing with Warne, but Bransgrove said Hampshire have other options.”Hampshire have also had talks with other big-name players that are reasonably well advanced. I’ve been talking about the potential of Twenty20 for some time and getting these superstars in is what it’s all about.”

West Ham: Fans amazed by Okoflex’s U23’s hat-trick

West Ham fans are ecstatic at the news that Armstrong Okoflex scored a hat-trick for the U23s in the young Hammers’ 4-2 win over Crystal Palace, putting them top of the Premier League 2 table.

Irish teenager Okoflex won and converted the penalty that saw West Ham bring back the lead after initially going 2-1 down to Palace, rounding off his hat-trick early on in the second half.

Kamarai Swyer then put the game to bed after left-back Jayden Fevrier fed the ball through to the attacking midfielder, who was able to lash in a near-post finish.

West Ham fans have been extremely impressed with Okoflex this season, who has totalled 10 goals and one assist in 13 Premier League 2 appearances.

This wasn’t even his first hat-trick of the 2021/22 campaign, as the left winger netted three times in the U23’s 6-1 victory against Arsenal.

Okoflex has proved that he can perform at the senior level too, as he scored in West Ham U23’s EFL Trophy tie against Ipswich, which they won 2-1.

Fans erupt at Okoflex’s hat-trick

Fans have flocked to West Ham’s tweet, which announces the teenager’s third goal, with amazement. They even call for him to be promoted to the first-team, following his fine form.

Zimbabwe aim to continue rebuilding

There is a rare lull on the international stage at the moment – which is being neatly filled by the Champions League – but on Monday a series between two African nations begins in Harare

Cricinfo staff11-Oct-2009Match factsMonday, October 12, 2009
Start time 9.30am, (7.30GMT)Charles Coventry hit a record-equalling 194 against Bangladesh earlier this year•AFP

Big pictureThere is a rare lull on the international stage at the moment – which is being neatly filled by the Champions League – but on Monday a series between two African nations striving to move up to (or, in Zimbabwe’s case, return to) the top table begins in Harare. Kenya, who have just completed their Intercontinental Cup tie against a Zimbabwe XI, are the opposition for five ODIs as both teams try prove there can be more than one major cricket-playing nation in the continent. In truth, this is a battle between two sides firmly entrenched in the lower levels of one-day international cricket. However, for Zimbabwe it continues their rehabilitation towards resuming their Test status. There are positive noises coming out of the country from the new faces on board as former players return to help administer and coach. Alistair Campbell, the former captain, told the that he believes Zimbabwe can return to Tests in “two or three years”, while David Houghton last month told Cricinfo he also had positive views on the future.First, though, Zimbabwe need to mould a side that competes consistently and their recent record against Kenya suggests they should be confident of doing so in this series. In January and February they completed a 5-0 whitewash in Kenya and will be targeting a similarly emphatic result this time.Kenya have failed to develop as they once promised to and there have been many problems within the game. Their Intercontinental Cup loss to the Zimbabwe XI won’t have boosted spirits, while they have won only two ODIs since 2007, plenty of them against fellow Associates who they should be able to compete with.Form guide (last five completed matches, most recent first)Zimbabwe – LLWLL
Kenya – LLLLL
Team newsZimbabwe have plenty of spin options in the squad and during their last series, against Bangladesh, they often played three frontline options. That could be on the cards again, although an extra seamer may be required depending on conditions which could hand a debut to Trevor Garwe. The batting line-up looks reasonably solid with Sean Williams and Brendan Taylor available.Zimbabwe (possible) 1 Charles Coventry, 2 Hamilton Masakadza, 3 Sean Williams, 4 Brendan Taylor, 5 Stuart Matsikenyeri, 6 Elton Chigumbura, 7 Forster Mutizwa (wk), 8 Prosper Utseya (capt), 9 Ray Price, 10 Chris Mpofu, 11 Trevor GarweThere are not many options for Kenya following their four-day defeat, but Peter Ongondo could return to strengthen the seam attack. As usual, much will rest on the shoulders of the in-form Steve Tikolo.Kenya (possible) 1 David Obuya, 2 Rakep Patel, 3 Collins Obuya, 4 Steve Tikolo, 5 Maurice Ouma (capt & wk), 6 Alex Obanda, 7 Jimmy Kamande, 8 Thomas Odoyo, 9 Ragheb Aga, 10 Nehemiah Odhiambo, 11 Hiren VaraiyaWatch out for…In the fourth ODI against Bangladesh, Charles Coventry came within one powerful blow of making the first double century in ODI cricket. In the end he had to settle for a record-equalling 194 as he lost the strike during the final over, and even that wasn’t enough to prevent a Bangladesh victory. However, he showed that an average in the low 20s (as it was before that innings) perhaps wasn’t a true reflection of his ability and Zimbabwe will be hoping he can find similar form again.Thomas Odoyo has been a stalwart of the Kenya team for over a decade having made his debut during the 1996 World Cup. His all-round skills bring valuable balance to the side and 121 wickets at 30 is an impressive ODI record. His experience is vital in a side blooding youngsters and it was a surprise to see him as low as No. 8 in the Intercontinental Cup match.Stats and triviaThese two teams have completed 24 results out of 26 ODIs with Zimbabwe well ahead by 20 wins to four.Kenya’s last victory against Zimbabwe came in Nairobi in October 2008 when then won by 95 runs.Quotes”We played very well to beat them 5-0 the last time. But they will definitely want to redeem themselves. They have shown in recent matches that they are a much-improved side. It would be folly to underrate them.”
Prosper Utseya is determined not to take the Kenya team lightly despite Zimbabwe’s success earlier this year.

Abul Hasan breaks Zimbabwe hearts

Abul Hasan, in a superb all-round display, guided Bangladesh Under-19 to a thrilling one-wicket win against Zimbabwe Under-19 in Khulna

Cricinfo staff14-Nov-2009
Scorecard
Abul Hasan, in a superb all-round display, guided Bangladesh to a thrilling one-wicket win against Zimbabwe in Khulna, giving the hosts a 2-0 lead in the five-match ODI series. The game was settled in the 47th over, but Bangladesh, it appeared, were out of contention when they lost their ninth wicket for 170, still 24 short of victory. However Abul approached the task at hand with aggression, striking five fours in his unbeaten 22, to ease the pressure off his partner Kamrul Islam, who faced just two deliveries in the 25-run stand. The target of 194 was achieved also due to a lower-order recovery led by Noor Hossain’s 65 and Alauddin Babu’s 34-ball 30.The win undid a fine effort from Zimbabwe’s opening bowler Tendai Chitara, who grabbed 4 for 35, to blow away the Bangladesh top order. Offspinner Simon Mugava supported him with 3 for 31, and left the home team reeling at 47 for 6. But Noor added 76 with Tasamul Haque (26) and a further 31 with Babu. In a see-saw game, Zimbabwe were favourites when the ninth wicket fell but Abul crushed their hopes.Abul was also the chief wrecker in the Zimbabwe innings, grabbing 5 for 26 to bowl out the opposition for a below-par score. Not that Zimbabwe were spineless; each of their top five got to double-digits but were unable their scores into anything substantial. Dean Mazhawidza (42) and Mazvita Zambuko (39) added 67 for the third wicket and helped take their team to a comfortable position at 171 for 4. But the rest of the line-up crumbled; Zimbabwe lost their last six wickets for 22, proving crucial in the outcome.
