Presidente do Atlético-MG pede paciência à torcida e freia euforia

– O time se dedicou e mereceu a vitória.

Estamos reconstruindo o time. Ele me ajudou a contratar sem dinheiro.

Celtic hit with Josip Juranovic blow

Celtic have been hit with a fresh injury setback over defender Josip Juranovic after the Old Firm clash on Sunday…

What’s the latest?

The Hoops full-back was forced off in the 67th minute of the game as he hobbled off with what appeared to be a hamstring strain and was replaced by Anthony Ralston.

Bhoys boss Ange Postecoglou did not comment on his situation after the match and Celtic now face a nervous wait to find out the severity of the injury in the coming days.

Supporters will be gutted

This news will surely leave Celtic supporters gutted as it will be a big blow to lose him for any period of time between now and the end of the season. Depending on how bad of a strain it is, he could be out for days, weeks, or months and that is why the supporters will be anxious to hear more about him.

After he came off, Ralston struggled against Ryan Kent for the rest off the game. Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell noted that the Gers were “getting joy” against the Scot and this highlights Juranovic’s importance to the team and the impact his loss will have in the coming weeks if he is missing.

The difference between Celtic when he was off and on the pitch in the Scottish Cup semi-final clash was obvious, as illustrated by Campbell’s comment. They struggled defensively after he went off as Ralston was unable to cope with the Gers and this suggests that it would be a disaster if the Croatian is now absent for a number of games.

In the Premiership this season, he has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.21 across 27 appearances. He has helped the Hoops to keep 11 clean sheets in the league, making 2.2 tackles and interceptions per game whilst winning 56% of his duels.

This shows that he has been strong defensively and a key part of Postecoglou’s resilient back line in the division throughout the campaign. However, he has also caught the eye going the other way with 1.4 key passes per game and three goals, showing that he can find the back of the net himself and create openings for his teammates to score from.

Therefore, he has been crucial for the Hoops this season with his flying play down the flank. He has been able to impress in attack whilst remaining consistent and reliable at the back and the fans will be gutted by this injury blow.

Nunca tinha feito locução assim no estádio – disse.

AVFC must unleash Tim Iroegbunam

After getting beat 1-0 against Newcastle United, Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard said that changes need to take place in the team moving forward.

Having then been beaten by Watford by another 1-0 scoreline in their latest league outing, it seems as though Gerrard may have a bigger problem on his hands than originally feared, with his side now having only won one of their seven previous league games.

Moving forward, one big change that the Villa boss could look to make in his team is by giving young midfielder Tim Iroegbunam his first taste of senior football at the Midlands club.

The 19-year-old has been involved on the substitutes bench for Villa’s last seven games, showing that he is on the fringes of breaking into the first team after joining the club back in the previous summer transfer window from fellow Midlands outfit West Bromwich Albion.

Since becoming a Villa player, the midfielder, who has been described as “athletic” in the past by the club’s academy manager Mark Harrison, Iroegbunam has made 18 appearances for their U23 side, chipping in with one goal and one assist in the process.

Earlier this month, Gerrard had this to say about the teenager and his situation regarding when he’ll make his first senior appearance for the Villans.

He said: “I know he’s ready but, the midfield area at the moment for us, I’m really pleased with it. It’s looking good, looking strong. Tim has to keep pushing and fighting.”

Taking this into account, perhaps Villa’s two previous results will have swayed Gerrard into making a change with his team selection and giving the young midfielder a chance to show what he can do in the Premier League.

While unleashing the Englishman could be a positive solution for Villa’s current issues on the pitch in the short term and an exciting prospect for the fans to see, it’s worth thinking on a long-term basis too.

If Iroegbunam can make the most out of any opportunities that come his way between now and the end of the season, he could well end up saving the club millions in potential transfer fees rather than seeing them splash out on the likes of Yves Bissouma or Wilfred Ndidi when the summer transfer window opens.

We should score over 550 to exert pressure – Dilshan

Sri Lankan opener Tillakaratne Dilshan feels that Sri Lanka will be able to exert pressure on India if they score over 550 in the first innings on the placid SSC wicket

Sri Lankan opener Tillakaratne Dilshan feels that Sri Lanka will be able to exert pressure on India if they score over 550 in the first innings on the placid SSC wicket. The hosts ended the opening day on a strong 312 for 2, with Tharanga Paranavitana and Kumar Sangakkara tormenting India with centuries yet again.”The second day is the best day to bat on the SSC pitch and we have our two most experienced batsmen at the crease – Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene,” Dilshan said. “If we score over 550 on this wicket we can put pressure on India and get a decision in our favour.”It is a superb wicket to bat on and I am disappointed I got out for 54. Tharanga and Sanga (Sangakkara) batted without taking any risks. We didn’t experience any problem batting on this wicket. After the first 3-4 overs the wicket favoured the batsmen. It is not an easy wicket for the fast bowlers.”Dilshan and Paranavitana shared an attacking opening stand of 99 in 18.1 overs after winning the toss to set Sri Lanka to a big score. Dilshan, who was out trying to force the pace off left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha by giving a catch to short extra cover, said he had no plan to change his approach to batting.”I don’t plan to change the way I am playing now. I have scored 11 Test centuries batting in this manner. This is my seventh Test as an opener and I am averaging 63 (sic. 67). This is the way I bat but sometimes I think if I can slow myself down a little bit it would be better,” he said.Commenting on the match, Dilshan was confident that by the third and fourth days the two spinners, Ajantha Menis and Suraj Randiv, will come in to play.”We have confidence in the two quicks Dammika Prasad and Dilhara Fernando. They can bowl more than 140-plus (kph) and they can get some bounce and pace off this wicket. By the third and fourth days I am sure the spinners should do the job for us. We have confidence in these four bowlers,” Dilshan said.”It’s a big loss without Lasith [Malinga] who took seven wickets in the last Test, but Dilhara and Prasad have got an opportunity to cement their places in the team. I hope they make use of that advantage.”

Katich backs Smith as Test prospect

Steven Smith’s state captain Simon Katich is confident the legspinning allrounder will be ready for Test cricket if he gets his opportunity at Lord’s against Pakistan next month

Steven Smith’s state captain Simon Katich is confident the legspinning allrounder will be ready for Test cricket if he gets his opportunity at Lord’s against Pakistan next month. Nathan Hauritz has been forced home from Australia’s tour with a foot injury and is unlikely to be fit for the Tests, which leaves Smith as the sole spinner in the squad. The Australian selectors are understandably excited by Smith, who at 21 already has four first-class centuries to his name, is a miraculous fielder and an improving bowler. The major question-mark over Smith as a potential Test player is the quality of his legspin, which has brought him 26 wickets in first-class cricket at an average of 48.84.They are hardly the sort of figures that will strike fear into Test batsmen. But Katich, who will be one of Smith’s Test team-mates if he is handed a baggy green at Lord’s, said Smith had taken major steps in his bowling last summer and his season-ending effort for New South Wales of 7 for 64 against South Australia at the SCG was a terrific sign.”He blew us all away with the way he knocked South Australia over on one afternoon of cricket,” Katich, who is in England playing for Lancashire, told Cricinfo. “At one stage they were cruising at 2 for 180 and then in an hour’s time they were all out and we’d finished the season.”It was phenomenal bowling and the way he was getting his wickets was great – big spinning legspinners caught and slip and bat pad and bowled – genuine wickets, not through bad shots or anything. He just went through them with great bowling. That was exciting to see him make a statement.”That display alone meant Smith had already bettered the first-class bowling best of Cameron White, to whom he is often compared as a useful legspinner and powerful batsman. White was chosen as a bowler in all four Tests on Australia’s tour of India in 2008, yet in 108 first-class appearances he has only ever taken two five-wicket hauls.Smith has spoken about the value of his one-on-one training with Shane Warne during the Australian summer, when he was first called in to the Test squad as cover. Since then he has firmly established himself in Australia’s Twenty20 squad and over the next few weeks has the chance to make his name as a one-day and Test player.”There’s been a lot of talk about who’s going to be the next big thing spinning-wise in Australia,” Katich said. “That’s a lot of pressure for the young guys coming through. The way he progressed through the summer, when he was in and around the Test squad at various stages and spent time with Warney … his bowling went to another level after those sessions.”He’s a confident player and he’s prepared to listen and learn. He’s got a very bright future in front of him. Whether he gets an opportunity or not [in the Tests] we’ll wait and see, but if the wickets are dry and they spin, then he could come into calculations. There’s no doubt that he’s gaining confidence being in and around the Australian setup. You can see his improvement all the time.”If Smith does make his debut next month, he will be the eighth spinner Australia have tried in Tests since the retirement of Warne just over three years ago. Of those, Brad Hogg and Stuart MacGill have retired, Beau Casson is struggling for a place with New South Wales, Jason Krejza has fallen away for Tasmania, Bryce McGain is performing solidly but is 38, and White rarely bowls for Victoria.

Journalist makes ‘bonkers’ Bamford claim

It is ‘absolutely bonkers’ that Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford hasn’t started a game for five months, according to journalist David Anderson.

The Lowdown: Bamford missing for months

The 28-year-old enjoyed perhaps the best season of his career in 2020/21, scoring 17 goals and registering seven assists in the Premier League, proving to be a pivotal figure for the Whites on their return to the top flight.

Bamford has had an unfortunate time of things in this campaign, though, starting just five times in the league as constant injury problems have held him back.

The hope is that the striker’s return to the fold isn’t far away now, given his all-round influence.

The Latest: Journalist bemoans Bamford’s absence

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Anderson admitted that he is staggered about how much football Bamford has missed this season, saying:

“Bielsa was optimistic and said Bamford should have been back for West Ham, but he suffered another injury and it’s his third one of the season.

“He hasn’t started a game for Leeds since 17 September, it’s absolutely bonkers.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-33/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Huge miss for Leeds

There have been numerous reasons for Leeds’ struggles at times in 2021/22 and the absence of Bamford has certainly been one of them, with Marcelo Bielsa’s men far more toothless without the 28-year-old. Having scored 62 league goals last season, they have just 24 this term just beyond the midway point of the campaign.

Not only is the Englishman a regular source of goals, his selflessness on and off the ball is also crucial, as highlighted by two assists this season prior to his injury troubles and an average of 1.1 clearances per game.

When Bamford returns, it should give Leeds the focal point they sorely need – Jurgen Klopp has hailed him as ‘exceptional’ – and it would be a surprise if their level of performances and results don’t go up a gear once he is eventually back.

In other news, Leeds are reportedly interested in signing one exciting player. Find out who it is here.
