Daniel Vettori berated New Zealand for a familiar batting collapse on the third evening in Seddon Park, as the hosts crumbled to 110, handing Pakistan a 10-wicket victory. New Zealand lost their top six batsmen for 25 runs within the space of an hour, falling prey to excellent spells from Wahab Riaz and Abdur Rehman.”I think we fought pretty hard in the morning to give ourselves a chance to come back into the game,” Vettori said, after New Zealand bowled Pakistan out for 367 in their first innings. “The three seam bowlers had to work pretty hard throughout, but then to let it all slip with a familiar batting performance in the third innings leaves a really sour taste.”The match had been well poised at the tea break, with New Zealand 59 runs in arrears and all their wickets in hand before they capitulated catastrophically in what turned out to be the final session of the Test. The hosts lost ten wickets for 74 runs and Vettori blamed poor decision making for the collapse. “You need to make good decisions in Test cricket. There were four or five today, run outs, rash shots, bad decision-making and it all adds up to being bowled out for 110.” Ross Taylor was run out attempting an ill-advised single, while Tim McIntosh, Martin Guptill and Reece Young all fell to injudicious strokes.Vettori claimed that despite the woeful performance, there was enough talent in the top order to justify their places in the team. “Brendon’s obviously been outstanding since he became an opener and Timmy McIntosh got a 100 two Test matches ago. There’s been some good performances from everyone in that top six, but we are just going to have to become more consistent.”Vettori also said that he and coach John Wright had already reproached the side for the collapse and expressed a desire to bid farewell to batting efforts like today’s. “You have to look pretty closely at your own performance. [John Wright] and myself have spoken to the team and there were a lot of harsh words. Wrighty stated quite emphatically that things have to change, you can’t keep putting those performances together. He wants to be part of the change and obviously I do too, so it’s got to start at the base.”Pakistan’s bowling in the second innings should also be given credit, Vettori said, after Wahab stunned New Zealand with an exhibition of brilliant fast bowling with a tailing ball, while Rehman bowled a tight line as he had done throughout the match. “Riaz in particular came in, bowled a ten over spell and really gave them the impetus to come hard at us.”The match wasn’t completely devoid of positives for Vettori however as he reserved praise for Tim Southee, who bowled 32 nagging overs in the first innings at an economy rate of 2.56, for two wickets. “I thought this was [Southee’s] most impressive Test match performance. It was a flat wicket and for him to come in and bowl so much and so consistently was what we’ve really been looking for from Tim. He could have easily taken five or six wickets the way he bowled. He batted well in the first innings too, so it was a pretty good Test match and those are the performances that we expect of him, particularly with his talent.”Reece Young too, received plaudits from his captain on debut, after a tidy performance behind the stumps. “He looked composed with the gloves and with the bat. He’ll obviously want to go on with the bat and get some runs, but I thought he looked pretty good.”Vettori allayed fears about his own health, stating that he expects to make a full recovery after he had been ill on day two, seeming sapped of energy in the outfield. There were also reports that he had undergone blood tests for various diseases. “I feel a lot better today, all my results have come back clear. I need a couple of days’ rest but I’ll be alright for the Basin Reserve.”

Spurs insider drops update on Rodon future

Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly loan out centre-back Joe Rodon rather than allowing him to leave the club on a permanent deal during the upcoming transfer window, according to Lilywhite Rose insider John Wenham.

The Lowdown: Rodon given green light to leave

The 24-year-old, whose contract with the north London club isn’t set to expire until 2025, reportedly made up his mind earlier this year that he wanted to quit Spurs, and a source from N17 later told Football Insider that they have given the green light for the Welshman to find a new club this summer.

Rodon was linked with a move away from the capital in the January transfer window amid interest from the likes of Brighton, Newcastle and Leeds, but the Spurs insider now believes that the 24-cap international could be loaned out in a bid to raise his price tag before considering a permanent sale.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Loan move on the horizon?

When speaking to Football Insider about the Tottenham defender’s situation, Wenham said:

“If you look at Cameron Carter-Vickers, he has gone to Celtic and risen his stock. Tottenham are now going to get a bigger fee for him wherever he goes this summer.

“So my position on Joe Rodon has changed slightly. I now think it would be more sensible to loan him to another Premier League club.

“Maybe someone who comes up, Fulham would be a good one. He can then play every game that season and raise his own stock.

“That allows us to sell him at a much greater price. At the moment, he is getting no exposure. The Carter-Vickers deal has shown this is the way to do things.”

The Verdict: Rodon could be looking to move

The £7.2m-rated Welshman has barely been given a chance to prove himself in the first team since the arrival of Antonio Conte, having made just three appearances under the 52-year-old this season, with none of those coming in the top flight despite being a regular feature in the Italian’s matchday squads.

Rodon, who was dubbed an “outstanding” player by Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson, will no doubt be looking for a move elsewhere as a result of this in a bid to find some much-needed game time.

With Conte reported to want six fresh faces ahead of the start of the 2022/23 campaign, including one centre-back, it looks like the writing might be on the wall for the Wales defender in N17, and it seems highly unlikely that we will be seeing him in a Spurs shirt next season.

The question is whether we’ll see him in a Spurs shirt again, or whether he could put a potential loan move to good use.

Sammy vows to bring passion and energy

After playing just eight Tests, Darren Sammy finds himself catapulted to the forefront of West Indies cricket in a time of upheaval and change, but none of this appears to faze him

Tariq Engineer21-Oct-2010

The joy of cricket, that is what Darren Sammy wants to bring back to West Indies•AFP

Darren Sammy never dreamed of being the West Indies captain. He once said his goal was to be the workhorse of the side. Yet after playing only eight Tests, he finds himself catapulted to the forefront of West Indies cricket in a time of upheaval and change, with a tough tour of Sri Lanka on the horizon, but none of this appears to faze him.”I am going to be bold and frank,” Sammy told ESPNcricinfo. “I will let the players know what I expect and I, myself, will set an example. I will bring out the passion, the energy, and the commitment to West Indies cricket.”Sammy was given the captaincy after his predecessor Chris Gayle, and vice-captain Dwayne Bravo chose not to sign central contracts last month. The pair, along with Kieron Pollard, have forged lucrative Twenty20 careers in domestic tournaments, including the IPL, and refused WICB’s contracts which stipulated that they must make themselves available for the West Indies team at all times. The selectors decided it was important to have a captain who wanted to make that commitment, and placed Sammy and the Australian-born batsman Brendan Nash in charge of the Test squad until the end of the 2011 home series, ending Gayle’s three-year period at the helm of the team. Gayle and Bravo are in the squad that is headed to Sri Lanka, and Sammy is confident of having his former captain’s support.”Ever since I started my career in 2004, Chris has been the one who has made me feel comfortable. I have a good relationship with him, and with most of the players. He has said he will give me and the team his full support, which I know he means.”Sammy said he doesn’t feel any pressure to justify his place despite not being a regular member of the Test squad since he marked his Test debut in 2007 with 7 for 66 at Old Trafford. Since then he has been in and out of the side, averaging 19.40 with the bat and 27.74 with the ball. “I have full confidence in my ability,” Sammy said. “When I have been given the opportunity to play Test cricket, my stats show that I have done well.”West Indies have slipped to seventh place in the ICC Test rankings and eighth in the ODI chart and Sammy, obviously, is keen to lead the side back up the table. To do this he talks about thinking clearly on the field and executing properly, about doing the right things. But most of all, he talks about playing with pride and passion – something West Indies teams of recent vintage have often lacked.”I vow to represent the West Indies with pride and dignity,” he said. “Whatever we do, whether we are fielding, batting or bowling, you do with pride.”He realises this is no overnight task, that West Indies are in a rebuilding phase, and the Sri Lanka tour is merely the first step in what will be a long journey back to prominence. He remains optimistic though, that everyone is on the same page. “It will take a strong work ethic and discipline to get us there. We have to work as a team. We have to enjoy what we do. When we do that, and when we play well, it brings lots of smiles to the Caribbean people.”Sammy is acutely aware of the heritage of West Indies cricket and the responsibility of the current generation to live up to it. “I am taking on a mountain that carries so much legacy,” he said, “and I will also remind the guys of the great legacy that we carry.” He talks about the honour of following in the footsteps of Frank Worrell, Garfield Sobers, Clive Lloyd and Vivian Richards as the captain of the side. Sammy’s comments are in contrast to Gayle’s, who has said more than once that he does not want to be captain, and that he wouldn’t be sad if Test cricket were to disappear.Sammy plans to pick the brains of Lloyd and Richards, as well as senior players in the current team, to help him become a better captain. However, he makes it clear he will ultimately be his own man.His expectations for the tour of Sri Lanka are simple – to compete. The squad contains a lot of new faces and he cites Shivnarine Chanderpaul as someone who sets “an excellent example” as a batsman and a cricketer that newcomers can look up to. Gayle is another player he feels can inspire the youngsters in the squad. Although Sulieman Benn will miss the first Test due to suspension, Sammy is confident the team has the bowling resources to trouble the Sri Lankan batsman. But beyond the mathematics of wins and losses, Sammy wants to put the smiles back on the faces of West Indies fans. He wants to make them feel the same way he felt when he first started watching cricket with his father. “That’s what Darren Sammy wants to do. Bring back the joy.”

Celtic backed to sign Christopher Scott

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has talked up the idea of Celtic completing the signing of exciting Bayern Munich youngster Christopher Scott this summer.

The Lowdown: Hoops keen on Scott move

Ange Postecoglou already has a strong squad at his disposal at Parkhead, with yet another Scottish Premiership title on the cusp of coming the club’s way.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-3/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

That’s not to say that new signings don’t need to come in this summer, however, and Scott is one player who has been linked with a move to Celtic.

The 19-year-old looks set to leave Bayern at the end of this season, with his current deal expiring in June. He has made two appearances for the Bundesliga giants to date.

The Latest: Journalist talks up signing

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke was positive about Celtic signing Scott, claiming he would be an ‘exciting’ addition:

“It’s an interesting link, this one. Obviously, he’s a young player, only 19. He would maybe fit the bill for Celtic as he’s out of contract in the summer, so he could arrive as a free agent.

“He’s been playing for Bayern Munich’s reserves, so we don’t know too much about him, but at 19, he seems like an exciting attacker.”

The Verdict: One for the future

Scott joining Celtic for free this summer feels like it could be an ideal match for all concerned, with the attacking midfielder clearly not seen as a key player at Bayern moving forward.

He could come in as a squad player under Postecoglou, maturing over time and potentially becoming a key figure, considering he has already played for a club of Bayern’s stature.

Planning for the future is always vital, ensuring the Hoops’ squad doesn’t age together, and Scott is someone who could act as a long-term capture rather than a quick fix, who also has the potential to make an impact from the off.

In other news, an expert has made a key claim regarding the ownership of Celtic. Read more here.
