Junaid Khan, the Pakistan left-arm fast bowler, has credited Wasim Akram for helping him develop the incoming delivery for right-handed batsmen, which led to him picking up eight wickets in the three-match ODI series that concluded in Delhi on Sunday.Junaid was most potent in the first ODI in Chennai, taking out four of the top five to reduce India to 29 for 5. He also took two top-order wickets in the second ODI in Kolkata, finishing with 3 for 39. The Indian batsmen had struggled to counter Junaid’s swing and his contributions helped Pakistan take the series 2-1.”I have been a bowler who has relied on bowling outswingers consistently at a good pace. It was Wasim (Akram) who told me to develop the incoming delivery which would be my weapon against the Indian right-handers,” Junaid told .Junaid had dismissed Virender Sehwag with an incoming delivery in Chennai and Virat Kohli in all three matches.”It’s very natural for left-arm fast bowlers to slant it across the right-handers,” Junaid said. “Once a guy like Virender Sehwag gauges the length of the away-going deliveries, you can be murdered. When I did my homework, I found out that Sehwag has a problem with the ball that comes in. I then started working hard on that incoming delivery with our chief bowling coach Mohammed Akram.”This is not the first time Junaid has credited Wasim for his development as a fast bowler. Last June, after taking 5 for 73 on a flat SSC pitch in a Test against Sri Lanka, Junaid spoke of how he was inspired by Wasim’s spell in the 1992 World Cup final, where his two wickets in successive deliveries turned the game Pakistan’s way. Junaid said he had watched the Youtube video of it and Wasim himself had passed on tips on reverse swing. Junaid found appreciable reverse swing in that Test to put Sri Lanka under pressure.In his short career with Pakistan, Junaid has established a reputation for being one of the quickest bowlers in the country. However, he says swing is more important to him than pace.”I don’t want to compromise on pace but swing is the most important aspect of my bowling,” he said. “One might get adjusted to pace but if one has the ability to move the ball consistently at a decent pace, he can create trouble in batsmen’s mind.”He said it was a team effort that helped Pakistan win. “I was never under any kind of pressure to perform. I also got a lot of back-up from the other end as Mohammed Irfan and Umar Gul also bowled superbly. It was certainly a collective effort.”

The England national selector, Geoff Miller, has admitted there are concerns over the fitness of Stuart Broad, England’s Twenty20 captain, and that a time may come when he cannot be part of the side in all three formats of the game.Broad, who flew home early from the Test series in India with a heel problem, is due to link up with the England squad ahead of the final two one-day internationals, but is considered unlikely to play either of those matches. A more realistic target for his return is the Twenty20 series in New Zealand, which starts on February 9.That, however, is admittance that Broad’s recovery from the heel problem that plagued him during the Test series in India has not gone as smoothly as hoped. Broad is visiting a kit specialist in Germany this week to be fitted with customised boots aimed to alleviate the problem on his left heel, which takes the brunt of the force during his delivery stride.”The concern is that there have been two or three niggles that have affected his form and availability,” Miller told reporters in India. “Anybody with an injury is a concern to us and we’ve got to manage workloads as best as we can, that’s why we’re continually looking at other players. We will look at it and make sure he’s used in the best possible way for English cricket. He knows that.”The rotation of players during a packed international schedule is now a major talking point, particularly in Australia, and England are currently using such a system during the one-day series in India, with James Anderson and Jonathan Trott also rested. It is likely, too, that certain key players will be given periods off during the upcoming home-and-away Test series against New Zealand.However, ruling a player out of a format completely, unless that is a decision taken by the player concerned, is a drastic option and one that Miller hoped Broad will not have to contemplate.”At this moment of time we’re not thinking about taking him out of a format because he’s got that sort of quality, but if we reached the stage where his body wasn’t responding to all kinds of cricket then we’re open to that.”Although Broad finished 2012 as the fourth-highest Test wicket-taker among quick bowlers, with 40 wickets at 31.70, his form tailed off in the second half of the year against South Africa and India. He had earlier been rested from the one-day series against South Africa, led England at the World Twenty20 before picking up his heel injury during the warm-up matches in India. The problem then reoccurred towards the end of the tour.Broad’s injury problems began in Australia during the 2010-11 Ashes, when a strained stomach muscle sustained in Adelaide forced him home early. He then suffered a rib injury during the World Cup, which again ended his participation early, and then picked up a shoulder injury late in the 2011 home season.”What we have to do is react to the injury that he has at any one time,” Miller said. “He felt, and we felt, that he had to look after his body so he went away and worked really hard at that. Since then there have been a few niggling injuries, but anybody can get them.”

No domingo, depois do triunfo por 3 a 2 sobre o Vitória, pela última rodada do Campeonato Brasileiro, jogadores, membros da comissão técnica, convidados e seus familiares tiveram uma festa na parte coberta do gramado do Allianz Parque para celebrar o título. Na semana passada, o clube já tinha promovido um jantar com os mesmos convidados.

Former Australia fast bowler Dennis Lillee has decided to end to his association with the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai, citing his desire to “not travel anymore”. He will oversee two more training camps, before ending his 25-year association with the fast-bowling academy.”It wasn’t an easy call. But then, one of the main reasons behind this decision is that I don’t want to travel anymore,” Lillee was quoted as saying in the . “I have decided not to stay away from my family for lengthy periods.”During his time with the academy, Lillee had worked with several India players. “Zaheer [Khan], Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad would top the list,” Lillee said, talking about the bowlers who trained with him. “Munaf Patel, to me, has been a disappointment. He had the natural gift of speed but someone has obviously misguided him to drop pace. S Sreesanth, too, is a big let down, for the talent he showcased …”Lillee said he would have liked to work with the BCCI in some capacity. “Yes, I was a bit disappointed,” he said. “I like to do things my way and sometimes that frightens people.”

Ernest Hilaire, the West Indies Cricket Board CEO, has said selectors should focus on selecting the ‘best XI’ for the West Indies team, one that was a strong collective unit rather than just comprising 11 star players.”For a decade or so the selectors were guided by a process which had them arriving at the eleven best players to take the field,” Hilaire said, during the Barbados Cricket Association Awards ceremony. “With the eleven best players on the park our results went from bad to worse and yet worse still.West Indies have been without the services of Chris Gayle since the 2011 World Cup, owing to his differences with the board, and Dwayne Bravo intermittently, due to his Twenty20 commitments elsewhere.”There has been a paradigm shift. The emphasis is on selecting, not necessarily the eleven best players but the ‘best eleven’. It is not dissimilar to asking whether we prefer a team of stars or a star team. They are decidedly different.”The best eleven may not include the most attractive players but is rather a combination of players who, as a group, are more likely to bring positive results and show a commitment to sustained development.”Hilaire said the West Indies team has been steadily improving and is on the right path. “Though the victories have not been tumbling in, there can be little doubt that West Indies cricket is showing the signs of learning the first characteristic of any successful enterprise – the determination to succeed.””We have seen a greater commitment to fight to the very end, we have seen what was once thumping three and four day defeats in Test cricket now turned into epic final-day battles.”This new approach is not far off from producing the results we all yearn for. Change does not happen overnight, it is a process, sometimes painful, always with mistakes and mis-steps but once on the right path the results are certain.”I implore you to recognise that from the days when our team seemed conditioned to losing we now have a team which is battling to win and believing that it can in fact achieve victories.”Australia toured West Indies recently and the hosts drew the ODI series but lost the Tests 0-2. West Indies are now in England for a full tour.
