Sunderland can keep up their impressive record against arch rivals Newcastle United when Sunday rolls around.

Indeed, looking back at the more recent iterations of the fierce Tyne-Wear Derby, the Black Cats have some memorable victories to their name, with a 3-0 win in Sunderland’s favour being the last scoreline when the two rivals faced off at the Stadium of Light in Premier League action back in 2015.

Since then, there has been only one meeting on Wearside soil in early 2024, when the then Championship strugglers were trounced by the Magpies 3-0 in the FA Cup.

Now, however, Regis Le Bris’ men will hope to collect another memorable league victory against their sworn enemy, with one figure in his talented camp now standing out as a modern-day version of Kevin Ball, who featured in various Tyne-Wear derbies himself as a legend of the club.

Noted as being a Sunderland legend in “the truest sense of the word” by current chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus in 2022, Ball really did embody the fighting spirit the Black Cats will need to show against Newcastle on the weekend throughout his long-standing stay on Wearside.

Lauded for always being “a warrior on the pitch”, by former Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson, Ball would go on to make a staggering 388 appearances for his beloved team, with many a memorable showdown with Newcastle popping up.

Ball’s consistent brilliance from the middle of the park would further see him chip in with 27 goals, which included this diving header being expertly put away.

On top of often being in the right place at the right time to put his neck on the line, the Black Cats hall-of-famer would also go on to collect two Player of the Year accolades at the end of the 1990/91 season and the close of the 1996/97 campaign, while also even temporarily being handed the reins as Sunderland’s caretaker boss in 2013.

To put it simply, Ball is synonymous with the famous red and white stripes of Sunderland, with Le Bris hoping he can see the same verve and determination Ball had in spades coursing through his team’s veins on Sunday, as one key individual – in particular – continues to stick out as a Ball-style figure.

Unfortunately, the Frenchman will be without Luke O’Nien for the showdown with the Magpies after his red card against Manchester City.

The no-nonsense 31-year-old would have loved to feature against Sunderland’s Tyneside enemies if he hadn’t been dismissed, with O’Nien recently being branded as a “remarkable” icon of the club by EFL pundit George Elek.

He’s worthy of such adoration, as well, as the full-blooded defender has notched up a crazy 316 appearances for his team now. His mammoth journey started way back in League One, with his dedication to the cause undoubtedly similar to that of Ball’s.

Yet, even with these substantial numbers next to O’Nien’s name, Granit Xhaka is managing to stand out even more as a figure made in the same mould as the ex-Sunderland captain

The Swiss international is not afraid to launch himself into a tackle or a battle if necessary, as seen in him being branded a “monster” centrally by Arsenal-based writer Connor Humm, when he was still at the Emirates.

But, much like Ball, too, as seen when looking at his mightily impressive statistics at Sunderland so far this season, Xhaka is more than capable of popping up with a crucial goal and assist, with his one goal and four assists this campaign sitting pretty next to his 5.4 duels won on average.

Managing to collect six wins in the North London Derby when on the books of the Gunners, Xhaka’s know-how under pressure has already seen him be handed the Sunderland captain’s armband, amid shouts that he is the club’s “signing of the season” by Wayne Rooney.

Of course, he still has some time to go before he will be considered a Hall-of-Fame-worthy recipient like Ball, but it’s clear from his past exploits at Arsenal and his battling nature with the Black Cats so far that the £110k-per-week star will leave everything out on the pitch against Newcastle, just like Ball would have done.

The nerves will be there from Sunderland’s perspective, with the Premier League not hosting this tense contest since 2016.

But, with Xhaka present, Le Bris will be optimistic that his side can reign supreme, to continue their fine start to the season.

ونشرت الصحف البريطانية تصريحات لمحمد صلاح، أبدى خلالها اعتراضه على تواجده كبديل، وأشار إلى انقطاع علاقته بالمدرب آرني سلوت.

وعلّق بيرس مورجان عبر حسابه الرسمي على منصة “إكس”: “واو.. ربما حان الوقت لإجراء مقابلة يا صلاح”.

— Aqui o elenco é muito forte. Lógico que estamos preparados, vamos enfrentar qualquer time brasileiro, mas às vezes onde a gente passa mais dificuldade é quando treinamos 11 contra 11 aqui no Flamengo. É muita qualidade. Temos que enfrentar um Cebolinha, um Lino… Muitos jogadores que jogam muito no um contra um, e aí você vê a verdadeira qualidade. As dificuldades que a gente passa, às vezes não passamos no jogo.

While the injury to Martin Odegaard certainly took the shine off things, it was a brilliant weekend for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners completely outplayed West Ham United, beating them 2-0 in what was the manager’s 300th game in charge, and with Liverpool losing on Sunday, they now sit atop the Premier League table.

However, it wasn’t just a milestone match for the boss, as Bukayo Saka also made his 200th league appearance against the Hammers, in which he produced his 100th league goal involvement.

The Hale Ender has been the face of Arsenal for some years now, and while he rightly got plenty of plaudits at full-time, it was another strong showing from one of his teammates, someone who has a claim to being one of the best signings of the Emirates era.

Saka made his Arsenal debut under former manager Unai Emery in November 2018, coming on as a substitute in a game away to Ukrainian side Vorskla Poltava. He then made his full debut for the club a few months later at home against Qarabağ.

However, his first Premier League appearance came on New Year’s Day 2019, when he came off the bench against Fulham.

The Englishman wouldn’t feature again in the competition until the following season, when he started for the first time and got 45 minutes of action against Aston Villa before being taken off at half-time due to Ainsley Maitland-Niles being sent off.

Impressively, the 24-year-old’s first league goal involvement came the very next game against Manchester United, when he once again started off the left and provided an assist for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Three more assists would come before the Hale Ender finally scored his first goal in the competition in a game against Wolverhampton Wanderers, a game that saw Arteta play him on the right.

A return of nine goal involvements in 32 games marked a real improvement in the following campaign, but it was in the 21/22 season that the talismanic winger really began to show the rest of the league what he could do.

The Ealing-born monster racked up an impressive tally of 11 goals and seven assists in 38 appearances, and chalked up his first brace in a 5-0 thumping of Norwich City at Carrow Road.

Unsurprisingly, the England international has become an increasingly significant goal threat as the seasons have passed. Even though he missed almost four months of action last year, he still managed to produce 17 goal involvements in 25 league appearances.

Moreover, it was last season, in the game against West Ham at the London Stadium, in which he managed to produce four goal involvements in just 74 minutes of action; a goal and three assists.

In all, while there is still so much to come from Saka, he has already established himself as one of the very best in the Premier League over the years.

However, there was another Arsenal star who shone against the Hammers, and looks like he is becoming another Saka-esque star.

The good news for Arteta is that there are quite a few players in this squad who could be classed as his best signing.

However, in this instance, the player who deserves far more credit than he currently gets, and is becoming something of a Saka-esque star, is Jurrien Timber.

The Dutch international joined the club from Ajax in the summer of 2023 for a fee of around £38m, and despite missing practically all of the 23/24 season through an ACL injury, he has been immense in red and white.

He might not bomb up and down the pitch in the same explosive fashion as a Jeremie Frimpong, but the 24-year-old is a wall at the back, and to his credit, has become more of an attacking outlet over the last year or so.

For example, FBref now ranks him in the top 9% of full-backs in Europe’s top five leagues for through balls, the top 10% for progressive passes and the top 12% for goal-creating actions, all per 90.

On top of that, the Utrecht-born star has already scored two goals and provided two assists in just seven league appearances this season, with that second assist leading to Saka’s penalty.

However, while his continual improvement going forward is certainly a bonus, what really makes the Dutchman such an incredible player – and why the club view him “as one of the best in the world,” per Graeme Bailey – is his defensive brilliance.

He is an absolute rock at right-back and constantly makes life nightmarishly difficult for opposition wingers, which is just what he did against the Hammers.

In his 97 minutes of action, he made one clearance, two interceptions and six tackles as well as winning eight of 12 ground duels. He was an immovable object from the first minute to the last.

Now, you may be wondering to yourself: while this is all impressive, what makes Timber a Saka-esque star for Arteta?

Well, simply put, the manager can rely on him to put in consistently strong performances; he just does not let him down.

Ultimately, with his attacking play improving, his defensive abilities being some of the best in the league, and his consistent performances, it’s hard to disagree with analyst Ben Mattinson when he describes Timber as being “one of the best Emirates-era signings.”

Hampshire hit back from last week’s thrashing by Nottinghamshire in emphatic style with an 89-run Rothesay County Championship win over Warwickshire inside three days at Edgbaston.Set a target of 310, Warwickshire were all out for 220, unpicked by seamers James Fuller and Kyle Abbott. Alex Davies, with 66 from 106 balls, and Ethan Bamber (43) offered some resistance but the rest were blown away by a Hampshire side resurgent after their surrender at Trent Bridge.Hampshire’s second innings had closed in the morning on 203. Segundo a Conmebol, é preciso entregar a lista de 50 nomes dos inscritos 72 horas antes do início da fase (1º de agosto, terça-feira), ou seja, neste sábado (29). São permitidas até cinco substituições na lista inicial entregue para a fase de grupos.

Para que o nome do jogador pudesse ser inscrito, ele precisaria ter aparecido no BID da CBF até sexta-feira (28), algo que não aconteceu. Mesmo assim, ainda seria possível um atalho. A chance de isso acontecer é muito pequena, mas é importante destacar que ainda é possível uma inscrição. Caso a presença de um hipotético reforço na Libertadores seja mesmo descartada, o novo prazo para contratar seria quarta-feira (2), quando se encerra a janela de transferências para clubes brasileiros. Dessa forma, o jogador poderia ser inscrito nas quartas de final da competição, mas o Palmeiras tem a missão de eliminar o Atlético-MG para que isso aconteça.

According to GiveMeSport, Man City are now the clear frontrunners in the race for Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White, but much like the deal for Wirtz, it will be expensive to bring the attacking midfielder to the Etihad Stadium, given a reported asking price of £100m.

The Englishman is being eyed as a replacement for the outgoing Kevin De Bruyne, who has recently hinted that he could remain in the Premier League beyond the end of the campaign, with the Belgian seemingly open to the idea of signing for another English club.

Gibbs-White is now the top target to replace De Bruyne, but it remains to be seen whether Pep Guardiola’s side are willing to shell out the huge asking price.

Replacing De Bruyne will be a daunting task for whichever attacking midfielder City choose to sign this summer, but there are plenty of signs that Wirtz could’ve been a suitable option, given the level of his performances for Leverkusen in the 2024-25 campaign.

That’s not to say the Forest midfielder isn’t a solid alternative option, however, having already proven himself in the Premier League, picking up seven goals and ten assists for the Tricky Trees during their push for the Champions League this season.

Not only are the England international’s attacking numbers impressive, but he has also received high praise for his work-rate from ESPN pundit Janusz Michallik.

As such, there are signs Gibbs-White could be a fantastic heir to De Bruyne, despite arguably not being as flashy a signing as Wirtz, and Man City should look to wrap up a deal before interest in the 25-year-old increases.
