England Lions have been hit with further withdrawals after Essex’s Dan Lawrence suffered a hand fracture while batting in the nets ahead of the third unofficial Test against West Indies A, starting on Monday. The injury, which will rule Lawrence out of the one-day series to follow, means a Lions debut for Sam Northeast, who only arrived in Antigua on Sunday but goes straight into the starting XI.Northeast, 28, recently completed a move from Kent to Hampshire and is highly regarded on the county circuit – although curiously he has never represented the Lions, despite long being touted as an England prospect. He was due in the Caribbean for the one-day series but has now been drafted into four-day squad.Lawrence’s place for the one-dayers has been filled by Warwickshire batsman Sam Hain. Lawrence was not involved in the first two first-class games against West Indies A, both of which the Lions lost, but had been due to come into the side after Liam Livingstone suffered an ankle injury and was forced to go home early ahead of his maiden Test tour with England. However, he was struck on the right hand during net practice on Saturday, with X-rays subsequently revealing a fracture. He joins Livingstone in leaving the tour early, along with Ben Foakes and Mason Crane, who were scheduled to depart after the second Test.Northeast left Kent after refusing to extend his contract over the winter, citing Division One cricket and the chance to press his case with England as a reason for moving to Hampshire. He will be one of three debutants in the Lions team at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, with Northamptonshire quick Richard Gleeson – an injury replacement for George Garton – and Somerset spinner Dom Bess also coming in.Hain, who will also be involved in the North-South series, comes into contention for the three one-day matches, starting on March 6. The Lions have already had to make changes to the squad, with Toby Roland-Jones and Matt Critchley coming in for the injured Tom Helm and Liam Dawson, who has signed up for the Pakistan Super League.England Lions XI to play West Indies A in third unofficial Test: Keaton Jennings (capt), Haseeb Hameed, Nick Gubbins, Joe Clarke, Sam Northeast, Alex Davies (wk), Paul Coughlin, Dom Bess, Jack Leach, Saqib Mahmood, Richard Gleeson

ECB to propose '100-ball' competition

The ECB’s new city-based T20 competition could be set to be a 100-balls-a-side affair, according to a radical proposal released today

Faulkner: There’s a danger in getting too funky

The ECB’s new city-based competition is set to be a 100-balls-a-side affair, according to a radical proposal released today. The concept proposes two eight-team competitions – for men’s and women’s teams – consisting of 15 traditional six-ball overs, and a final 10-ball over, a 20-delivery shortfall on traditional T20 matches. The proposed approach was presented by the ECB to the chairmen and chief executives of the first-class counties and MCC on Thursday, and has been unanimously supported by the board of the new competition. The ECB have also confirmed that Southampton, Birmingham, Leeds, London, Manchester, Cardiff and Nottingham will be the host cities for the five-week competition, with Lord’s and The Oval each playing host to a London-based team.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“This is a fresh and exciting idea which will appeal to a younger audience and attract new fans to the game,” said Tom Harrison, the ECB’s chief executive. “Throughout its development, we have shown leadership, provided challenge and followed a process. We will continue to do that as the concept evolves.”Our game has a history of innovation and we have a duty to look for future growth for the health and sustainability of the whole game.”There are 18 first-class counties, playing red and white ball cricket, at our core and these counties and competitions will be supported, promoted and benefit from the game’s growth.”The radical proposals are an attempt to differentiate the ECB’s tournament from the T20 franchise competitions that have already taken root globally – including the IPL in India, Australia’s Big Bash, and the Caribbean Premier League – as well as the existing Vitality Blast competition, featuring all 18 counties, which will continue concurrently. The loss of 20 balls per innings will help to ensure that the competition fits comfortably into a three-hour window, with all matches expected to finish by 9pm.However, the proposed 10-ball final over may require buy-in from MCC’s law-makers, seeing as Law 17.1 currently states: “The ball shall be bowled from each end alternately in overs of 6 balls.”Sanjay Patel, the ECB’s chief commercial officer, and MD for the new competition, said: “The development team has had strong support and encouragement in its conversations to date and it’s time to take the concept wider as we build the detail.”This is 100-ball cricket, a simple approach to reach a new generation. Based on 15 traditional six-ball overs, the other ten balls will add a fresh tactical dimension.”Crucially, this will also help differentiate this competition from Vitality Blast and other T20 competitions worldwide, maintaining our game’s history of successful innovation.”The players and our valuable broadcast partners under the new TV partnerships from 2020-24 are vital to the success of this competition and they will see the energy, excitement and simplicity of this approach.”The five-week competition will feature both men’s and women’s team in concurrent competitions, as the ECB seek to build on the explosion of interest in women’s cricket since the World Cup win in 2017.”Our World Cup win at Lord’s last July showed what’s possible in terms of our sport reaching a new, younger and more diverse audience,” said Clare Connor, the ECB’s Director of Women’s Cricket.”Kia Super League has had a huge impact on participation, player development and the profile of our game. It was a big investment and a bold decision by the Board and paved the way for this next stage of growth.”To build the women’s and men’s competitions and identities together, side by side, is a prospect that few sports ever have and will give us greater reach, scale and prominence.”It will attract more women and girls to the game, ensure that cricket reaches and entertains more families and give our players an exciting stage upon which to display their talent.”The proposals represent the biggest shake-up to English cricket since the launch of the original Twenty20 Cup in 2003.

"Dominant" £1m Celtic man courted by European side chasing permanent deal

Celtic have plenty of money in the coffers and could be set to make even more financial capital amid interest in one of their fringe men from a European outfit, according to a report.

Celtic set their stall out ahead of the new season

With Brendan Rodgers now privy to the working order of his side’s Scottish Premiership fixtures this campaign, the Irishman can get to work on laying the groundwork for another successful year at Parkhead.

Kieran Tierney has already signed on the dotted line at Parkhead. Meanwhile, Benjamin Nygren, Callum Osmand and Hayato Inamura appear primed to join Celtic amid significant progress being made on their respective situations.

Brendan Rodgers

Speaking ahead of the new season, Rodgers has made it clear that the Hoops will look to set their own benchmarks rather than looking across the city despite Rangers’ recent appointment of Russell Martin.

He stated: “We create our own benchmark and our own levels, and we’ve been doing that consistently now. But there’s no doubt competition makes you better in whatever sport it is, or whatever pursuit of anything that you’re trying to achieve.

“If you have competition that really narrows in the focus, we always have to keep an eye on our rivals in terms of what they do and players that they might bring in, and systems they play and tactics they use, and managers.”

Dream Jota replacement: Celtic in talks to sign "amazing" star after Nygren

With Jota sidelined for up to 9 months due to an ACL tear, Celtic are in the market for a new winger.

Without blowing his own trumpet, the former Liverpool boss is aware that Celtic hold the monopoly in terms of recent success, in part down to the club’s financial prowess.

Now, they could be set to offload a fringe star that would add another little boost to the coffers if interest in his services is to advance.

Austria Vienna interested in landing Kwon Hyeok-kyu

According to journalist Mark Hendry on his Substack, Austria Vienna could offer Kwon Hyeok-Kyu a permanent escape route from Celtic after a loan spell at Hibernian that saw the South Korean midfielder make 22 appearances across all competitions.

The Austrian Bundesliga outfit were keen on bringing the Busan-born man to the continent at the beginning of the season, but had already reached their limit of six foreign loan players and were unable to strike a deal.

Previously spending time out at St Mirren, where he was labelled “dominant” by Stephen Robinson, Kwon has never made a senior appearance for Celtic after his £1 million move to the club in 2023 from Busan IPark.

Admittedly, he has suffered from the deep level of competition in the Bhoys’ engine room, though there is a feeling among many that he never really got started in Glasgow’s east end.

Having the chance to start afresh may be the best course of action for all parties, and Celtic could bring in a small windfall if he were to be sold permanently.

Man United ready to make transfer offer to sign "energetic" £50m full-back

Manchester United are now ready to make a bid for an "energetic" defender, who is also being targeted by Arsenal and Liverpool, according to a report.

What's the latest Man United transfer news?

Man United are looking at strengthening in a number of key areas this winter, with a report revealing they are now leading the race for Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot, but there will be competition for his signature, as Newcastle United are also keen.

Erik ten Hag bolstered his attack with the addition of Rasmus Hojlund in the summer, but there are now indications he may want to add another striker to his ranks, with it emerging the manager has now green-lighted a move for Brighton's Evan Ferguson.

The United boss is short on options at full-back, with Luke Shaw currently sidelined, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka has now joined the long list of absentees, having suffered a hamstring injury which is set to rule him out for the next two months.

Although Wan-Bissaka is set to return prior to the January transfer window, it has now been revealed the Red Devils have their eye on a new right-back, with The Mirror reporting they are now ready to submit their opening bid for Brentford's Aaron Hickey.

In the wake of his impressive performances for the Bees, the 21-year-old has now attracted the interest of a number of top Premier League clubs, with Arsenal and Liverpool also being named as potential suitors, while Bayern Munich headline the interest from abroad.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank is adamant the club will not sell Hickey, but interest from rival English clubs continues to grow with every passing week, as a result of the progress he has made since being lured from Serie A side Bologna.

At international level, the Scot is viewed as an integral part of the side by manager Steve Clarke, especially considering he is a versatile option for Scotland, given that he is capable of playing on both sides of the backline.

If the youngster's club side are to let him leave this January, they are likely to hold out for a fee of around £50m, so he will certainly not come cheap.

How good is Aaron Hickey?

Frank has lauded his full-back for his versatility and ability to use both feet, saying:

“With Aaron there is a lot of talk about whether he is a right back or a left-back, but I am in that privileged position that he can play on both sides and will most likely go on the left,”

“He is both-footed and has huge ability, we don’t have that many full-backs so he is very important."

The Scotland international made 26 Premier League appearances for the Bees last season, establishing himself in the first team after joining from Bologna, and he's made five top-flight outings in the ongoing campaign.

Brentford defender Aaron Hickey.

As such, it may not take the starlet too long to adapt if he completes a move to Old Trafford, given that he already has Premier League experience.

Lauded as "energetic" by journalist Josh Bunting, Hickey clearly has a lot of potential, but there are question marks over whether a £50m outlay is justified, considering he is yet to establish himself as a top player.

Dale Steyn will look to county circuit to get game time ahead of South Africa’s next international assignment in Sri Lanka in July. Steyn, who has not played competitive cricket since the New Year’s Test against India where he injured his heel, still requires a month’s rehabilitation before returning to action.Steyn confirmed there was a “possibility,” of him joining Hampshire in June, although he is also looking at other options. Hampshire have already signed Hashim Amla for the first three months of the season, and have two South African Kolpak signees on their books – Kyle Abbott and Rilee Rossouw.Steyn was awarded a new national contract in April and has committed himself to returning for South Africa, though he has only played one Test since November 2016, when he broke a bone in his shoulder at the WACA, and his one-day future is uncertain. Steyn needs three wickets to overtake Shaun Pollock as South Africa’s highest wicket-taker in Tests.
