'Our seamers bowled well up front in arctic conditions' – Law

The West Indies coach said he was pleased with the day’s proceedings in Bulawayo, despite a dearth of wickets after an early burst

West Indies coach Stuart Law praised his seamers for a strong early effort in “arctic conditions” at the start of the second Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. While the mercury was as high as 38 degrees Celsius earlier this week, temperatures plummeted in the days before the game and dropped as low as 13 degrees today.”In these conditions, it doesn’t matter where you’re from, it’s hard work,” Law said. “You’ve got to concentrate. All in all I thought our seamers bowled well up front in arctic conditions.”West Indies’ quicks nipped three of Zimbabwe’s top order out inside the first hour of play, and they might also have removed Hamilton Masakadza early on had it not been for a no-ball from Shannon Gabriel. Law rued the missed opportunity, saying: “We had a wicket off a no-ball which has hurt us. We need to rectify that. We have spoken about it because it has happened quite often. We’ve just got to make sure we don’t do it again.”The error from Gabriel aside, there wasn’t a lot wrong with West Indies’ effort and Law singled out Kemar Roach for particular praise. Roach, who has taken 14 wickets in his last four Tests before this one, removed both Solomon Mire and Brendan Taylor in his opening spell.”He’s leading our attack,” Law said. “He’s our most experienced bowler and has the most wickets as well. He’s had some time out of the game as well, so it’s good to see him back in. He’s bowled superbly for us in England, thought he bowled well in the first Test and exceptionally well again this morning.”In conditions suited to spin bowling, it was thought that Devendra Bishoo would also prove a handful for Zimbabwe, especially after his nine-wicket haul in the first Test. He struggled in the cold, however, and went wicketless on the first day despite the turn on offer. “Bishoo struggled to get his hands warm so it didn’t quite come out for him,” Law explained. “The wicket is spinning square before lunch on day one again. It’s probably not an ideal five-day wicket, but it is what it is.”With Gabriel nursing what appeared to be some tightness in his hamstring, and Jason Holder also leaving the field during the day, West Indies turned to some of their part-time bowlers. Jermaine Blackwood came on as first change, while Roston Chase’s offspinners were used far more extensively than they had been in the first innings of the first Test.”The wickets aren’t going to be anywhere near conducive to seam bowling, so we’ve got to keep our seamers fresh,” Law explained. “It’s not about winning the game on day one, there are four more to go. If we blow them out in the first hour and a half of the first day we’re not going to set ourselves up well. Using Jermaine Blackwood for a period of time, although not the way I would have gone, he came on and did a good job. Went for eight runs off four overs, couple of plays and misses.”There was little further joy for West Indies after their early breakthroughs, with Hamilton Masakadza and PJ Moor putting on 142 for the fourth wicket, but Law remained hopeful that West Indies could reassert themselves on day two.”Take nothing away from Hamilton and Pete Moor, they dug in and put up a good partnership. They had a bit of luck – Hamilton with the no-ball – but he’s certainly played well. He hits the ball well and on wickets like these he’s tough to contain as well. We know that at times there are going to be partnerships, we’ve just got to hang in and get a wicket. We saw in the first Test that if you get one or two you can start a rot. Fingers crossed we can start one tomorrow.”

Fabrizio Romano: Tottenham Could Sign "Very Strong" Star

Renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared what he's heard on Tottenham Hotspur's potential move to re-sign defender Clement Lenglet.

Who will Spurs sign?

New Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou has started the 2023/2024 season off in very bright fashion, with the Australian successfully implementing his brand of exciting, attacking football so far.

The north Londoners opened their account for the new season with a 2-2 draw away to Brentford, but it was their latest 2-0 victory at home to Man United which earned serious praise.

Tottenham looked mostly comfortable and played on the front foot for the majority of their battle against Erik ten Hag's side, as the likes of Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr put on a masterclass in midfield.

Postecoglou's appointment has proved very fruitful for Spurs over their opening two league games, but if they're to maintain those standard, new reinforcements could still be needed.

Just nine days remain until the transfer window closes on September 1, and Tottenham's manager has previously expressed his desire to sign a new centre-half.

ange-postecoglou-2

Reliable football.london reporter Alasdair Gold, a Spurs correspondent, has also suggested that Spurs may have a number of deals "lined up" if they can ship players out the door first.

“Postecoglou said that himself in his press conference on Friday, he pretty much said how there’s areas in defence, midfield and attack that they can upgrade on as well," said Gold on his YouTube channel (via TBR).

“I would keep an eye on what happens. I kind of get the feeling that Spurs have got a number of deals lined up ready to go if they can get the players out of the squad first.”

The Lilywhites have so far sealed moves for goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, young centre-back Ashley Phillips, defender Micky van de Ven, playmaker James Maddison, winger Manor Solomon and striker Alejo Veliz, but another centre-back may well be on the agenda.

Spurs, for example, have been repeatedly linked with a move to re-sign Barcelona defender Lenglet, who spent the 2022/2023 campaign on loan in north London.

Speaking to the Here We Go podcast, reliable transfer reporter Romano has commented on Tottenham's potential move for the 28-year-old.

The reporter claims his signing is "one to watch" in the final days of this window, and he "could return" to N17.

“Clement Lenglet could return to Tottenham," said Romano (as transcribed by TBR)

"At the moment it’s not concrete or advanced, but in the final days of the window, in case Barcelona can’t find another solution for Lenglet, it could be one to watch."

How good is Clement Lenglet?

Tottenham Hotspur's loan defender Clement Lenglet.

Over his 26 league appearances for Spurs last term, Lenglet proved himself an adept ball-playing central defender, averaging a cool 87.5% passing accuracy out from the back (WhoScored).

Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, commenting after they signed the former Sevilla star on loan last summer, called Lenglet "very strong" in one-v-one situations and a "high level" player.

"He's a modern defender," said Lloris.

"Comfortable to be able to play from the back. He has a great left foot and can be very strong in one v one and he's strong in the air.

"Even if it's never easy when you arrive in the Premier League and he will have to adapt to the intensity of the games but he is a high level player, with experience."

Além disso, o ídolo do Timão ressaltou a importância do resultado.

Rangpur bowlers clinch thriller after Gayle's fifty boost

A combined effort from Rangpur Riders’ bowling attack ensured a successful defence of 142, in a match that was decided off the last ball

Rangpur Riders’ bowlers combined magnificently in the end overs to defend 142 against Dhaka Dynamites at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. Mashrafe Mortaza, Sohag Gazi, Thisara Perera and Rubel Hossain took two wickets each to bowl Dhaka for 139 off the last ball of the game. Dhaka needed 32 to win off 33 balls – with five wickets in hand – at one stage, but a late rally from Thisara and Lasith Malinga ensured a result in Rangpur’s favour. With ten needed off the last over and Kieron Pollard at the crease, Thisara managed to bowl five dot balls, including the wickets of Pollard – who had briefly threatened with a six off the third ball – and Abu Hider. Earlier, Rangpur scored 142 courtesy an early blitz from Chris Gayle, whose 28-ball 51 was the only half century of the game.Dhaka’s late crumbleDespite the frequent wickets, Dhaka’s prospects of a win were bright when Jahurul Islam and Shahid Afridi were at the crease. Jahurul had helped Dhaka recover from two early wickets, after which Afridi kept the scoreboard moving and threatened to break free with the end overs approaching. Afridi, however, was bowled in the 15th over, attempting a wild heave, and that wicket brought the run-scoring to a screeching halt. The next four overs yielded only 21 runs and two wickets – Mehedi Maruf out for a sluggish 15 off 24 balls, and Nadif Chowdhury falling to Malinga in the penultimate over. Entrusted with the final over, Thisara bounced back from Pollard’s six in the over to deliver three consecutive yorkers.Five-star Shakib keeps the target downHis 5 for 16 made Shakib Al Hasan only the fourth bowler with three or more five-fors in T20 cricket. Brought on to bowl in the ninth over, he dismissed Shahriar Nafees and Mohammad Mithun in his opening spell, before taking three wickets in Rangpur’s final over. At the start of that over, Rangpur were 140 for 6 and with Ravi Bopara at the crease, would have been eyeing a few quick runs. Instead, Bopara was run out off the first ball and Shakib went on to take three wickets off the next four deliveries. First, Ziaur Rahman holed out to Pollard at midwicket, two balls later Sohag Gazi was clean bowled and the next ball saw Rubel Hossain was caught behind. Rangpur added only two runs to their tally and Shakib’s 5 for 16 in 3.5 overs had shifted the momentum towards Dhaka at the break.Gayle comes good againRangpur raced to 71 for 1 in seven overs after being put in to bat and much of that was due to Gayle’s big-hitting. He cautiously saw off the first over and was given a reprieve in the second over, bowled by Sunil Narine, when a simple chance was put down by the short third man fielder. He capitalised on that immediately, smacking Mohammad Amir in the third over, followed by 15 runs in Narine’s second over. By the time he was out for 51 in the eighth over, after his second consecutive fifty, Gayle had smacked five fours and four sixes; in hindsight, that was just about enough for Rangpur in the end.

Forest Could Sign "Quality" Johnson Replacement For Only £7m

Nottingham Forest look set for a busy end of the summer, as Steve Cooper’s side brace themselves for transfer deadline day on Friday.

The Reds have already welcomed six players this window, however, recent reports have linked another attacking talent to the City Ground with changes expected in the time remaining in the market.

Both ingoings and outgoings have been rumoured with reference to Forest, with clubs in the Premier League eyeing the talent on show in Cooper’s squad.

What is the latest on Nottingham Forest’s transfer situation?

According to a report via The Athletic, Brentford Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are interested in forward Brennan Johnson, who is said in the report to be valued by the Reds around £45m.

Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed this week that the Bees have “left” conversations regarding the Welshman, with Spurs said to have “already held positive talks” with the player.

Whether it be this window or later, it looks as though Johnson’s future at the City Ground could be in doubt, leaving question marks over who could replace him.

One name that has emerged as a forward Forest could target is Anderlecht winger Francis Amuzu, who according to Dutch outlet Het Nieuwsblad (as relayed by Get Belgian & Dutch Football News), is of interest to the Premier League side and Olympiacos.

The report claims that both parties are offering a fee of €6m (£5m) for the 24-year-old, who is said to be valued between €8/9m (£7m) by the Belgian side.

Who is Francis Amuzu?

With the ability to play in a host of areas in the front line, Amuzu could be the ideal acquisition for Cooper to target should Johnson depart.

The Belgian is deployed primarily on the left flank, however can be fielded on the right side too, with his strengths identified by scouting site Total Football Analysis as his ‘balance and agility’.

A right-footed player, the 24-year-old is said to have the ability to ‘attack on the inside or outside’ of the opposition by Total Football Analysis, suggesting the havoc he could cause on the flank in Cooper’s set-up.

francis-amuzu-transfer-gossip-anderlecht-leeds-united-farke-jack-harrison

Last season, the “quality” Ghana-born dynamo, as lauded by his former Anderlecht boss Vincent Kompany, contributed to 11 goals in the league, scoring three and assisting eight, following on from his impressive form the campaign prior.

In 2021/22, the versatile winger netted five goals and registered four league assists, as well as playing a pivotal role in the Belgian league’s Champions' play-offs, where he scored four goals in six games.

For Forest, it’s integral that should Johnson leave, the Reds can replace him with a player of similar calibre due to the impact he has in the squad and the gap that could be left in the instance of his departure.

Last term, the Welshman mirrored Amuzu’s tally of eight goal contributions scoring eight and assisting three in the Premier League, as well as averaging similarly to the Belgian in terms of his approach to play.

As per Sofascore, the 22-year-old averaged 0.9 successful dribbles per game in last season, identical to the average of Forest’s reported target who averaged 0.9 in the Belgian Pro League.

A player of a similar playing style and dynamic to Johnson, Cooper could ease the potential blow of losing the City Ground star by making a move for the Belgian, who could bring an added threat to the attack in his absence.

Chatterjee, Easwaran keep Bengal on course for semi-finals

Despite a lead of 613 at the end of the fourth day, Bengal don’t necessarily have to declare in a bid for an outright win – they are set to advance to semi-finals by virtue of their first innings-innings lead

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Dec-2017
ScorecardPTI

Writtick Chatterjee’s unbeaten double-century and Abhimanyu Easwaran’s second century of the match meant Bengal amassed 483 for 4 by stumps and have all but sealed the game against defending champions Gujarat. By virtue of a strong first-innings advantage, Bengal’s overall lead is now 613. They don’t necessarily have to declare in the bid for an outright win, as they would advance to semi-finals by virtue of their lead in the first innings anyway.Resuming on 177 for 1, Bengal’s overnight batsmen Chatterjee and Easwaran went about collecting personal milestones one after the other. Easwaran brought up his seventh first-class hundred even as Chatterjee completed his second a little while after, off 183 balls. Gujarat, though, broke through in the eleventh over of the morning when seamer Ishwar Chaudhary accepted a return chance offered by Easwaran. That, however, didn’t put an end to Gujarat’s misery as Chatterjee continued pinching runs, only this time in the company of captain Manoj Tiwary (59). Together they added 166 runs for the third wicket following which Chaudhary struck again to send back Tiwary. Chatterjee then added 88 runs for the fourth wicket with Shreevats Goswami (32) before the latter was bowled by Samit Gohel with less than five overs remaining in the day. Chatterjee, playing only his sixth first-class game, had collected his maiden double-hundred about an hour after tea and remained unbeaten on 213 off 357 deliveries, including 23 fours and a six.
