Tewatia, Mohit keep Kings XI alive

Rahul Tewatia, who picked 2 for 18 in his first game this season, and Mohit Sharma applied the choke in the last five overs as Kolkata Knight Riders went down by 14 runs

Bangar: Tewatia’s introduction turned the match

A sensational display of end-overs bowling from Mohit Sharma and strangulation by legspin from Rahul Tewatia, playing his first game this season, helped apply the choke on Kolkata Knight Riders. By securing one of three wins they needed, Kings XI lived to fight another day.In what was an engaging last five overs off which Knight Riders needed just 50, Mohit brought out all his slower variations – the knuckleball, back-of-the-hand slower deliveries and offcutters – and delivered them with precision to deny Chris Lynn, who wiped out half of Knight Riders’ 168-run target off just 52 balls, and Manish Pandey. The pair’s dismissal off successive deliveries off the 18th over helped close out a tight game, with the Sharmas – Mohit and Sandeep – defending 29 off the 12 deliveries to ensure three playoff spots were still up for grabs.Knight Riders’ productive first sixKings XI made four changes, two of those being forced. One of them – Hashim Amla – had just smashed a 60-ball 104, his second century of the season, in the previous game. Even so, the rest of the batsmen stuttered as they finished with just 189 when they should’ve posted 210. Now, without Amla, who along with David Miller was unavailable because of national duty, Kings XI needed a robust beginning from the openers. Manan Vohra, who had earlier in the tournament shunted up and down the order to accommodate both Shaun Marsh and Martin Guptill, sparkled briefly, but his dismissal brought about a restrained approach. The first six overs fetched just 41 for the loss of the openers. Knight Riders had begun well.Maxwell, Saha keep the innings aliveOn a surface where the ball was deviating just about enough to keep the medium-pacers interested, Chris Woakes and Colin de Grandhomme bowled six overs in tandem, conceding just 22 off the first four immediately after the Powerplay. Kings XI limped to 63 for 3 in the first half. They went 17 deliveries without a boundary after Shaun Marsh’s dismissal in the ninth over, before Maxwell cut loose – hitting de Grandhomme for two successive sixes off legitimate deliveries to trigger a surge. Maxwell’s picking of lengths was impressive as he played the pull effectively against the pacers. Wriddhiman Saha, on 10 off 17 at one stage, pinched crucial boundaries to move to a run-a-ball 26. At 115 for 3 with five to play, Kings XI needed big back five overs. But they were denied.Kuldeep Yadav, returning in place of Piyush Chawla, was rewarded for his willingness to flight the ball as he had Maxwell caught at wide long-off in an attempt to hit him for a third successive six. In his next over, he had Saha stumped after being biffed across the line one ball earlier. A cameo from Tewatia lifted them to 167, not underwhelming but not match-winning either.Getty Images

Narine tees off, Lynn consolidatesTwo quiet men, who don’t believe in intimidating opponents with words, let their blades talk. Sunil Narine’s no-frills approach fetched him four fours in a 10-ball 18. Lynn, playing in only his second game after returning from a shoulder injury that kept him out for three weeks, didn’t show signs of “not being a 100 percent” as he revealed during a flash interview. Time and again, he was tested against the short ball, only for the deep midwicket and wide long-on boundaries to be peppered with regularity. The best shot of his knock – a flat-batted swat off Matt Henry which he fetched from outside off – showed how brutally effective he can be even if not at full tilt. Yet, this wasn’t as brutal a knock as the one against Royal Challengers Bangalore. By bringing up a half-century off just 29 deliveries, Lynn ensured Gautam Gambhir’s struggle against spin – he scratched around 17 deliveries for 8 before mistiming a slog to deep midwicket – didn’t deeply disturb the asking rate.Tewatia spins a webOne ball after sending back Gambhir, Rahul Tewatia, playing his first game this season, saw off Robin Uthappa, but to not give any credit to Axar Patel would be doing injustice to his efforts. Running around from straight deep midwicket, he covered quick ground before putting in a dive to catch the dipping slog sweep inches from the ground near deep square leg. Now, the choke was on. Axar followed it up by conceding just three in his next over. The spinners – Tewatia along with Axar and Swapnil Singh – at that stage had combined figures of 2 for 30 off six overs. Knight Riders needed 86 off 54 balls.Maxwell’s punt on Mohit pays offBy leaving two overs of Mohit in the last five, Maxwell gambled. Considering the form Lynn was in, it was a tough proposition. But the pressure applied by the spinners left Knight Riders with a steep task against a bowler, who justified the INR 6.5 crore investment, at a crunch moment when the game was on the line and Kings XI’s chances of staying alive was hanging by a thread. That he bowled just three overs may have been a decision Kings XI could have rued, but on the night, it was his experience that prevailed.

Chelsea Set To Submit "New Bid" For £100m "Machine Man"

Chelsea are expected to submit a "new bid" for Brighton and Hove Albion's defensive midfielder Moises Caicedo "in the next days", according to reliable journalist Rudy Galetti.

Is Moises Caicedo leaving Brighton?

The Premier League talisman has established himself as an integral member of Roberto De Zerbi’s squad at The Amex having started 34 out of the 38 top-flight games last season, and after emerging as his outfit’s best-performing defensive player, he’s been attracting significant interest since the start of the year.

Back in January, Arsenal were heavily linked with a swoop for the 21-year-old who even penned an open letter on social media to share his desire to leave, but soon after, it came as a surprise that he put pen to paper on a new long-term Seagulls contract until 2027, likely so that they could sell their prized asset for more money this summer.

The Blues more recently entered the race for the Ecuador international but saw their initial £60m offer turned down, though with members of the media having since claimed that he’s “keen to join” and is “pushing for the move”, Todd Boehly and Mauricio Pochettino are ready to take a second bite of the cherry.

Are Chelsea signing Moises Caicedo?

Taking to Twitter, Galetti revealed that Chelsea will imminently table a fresh offer for Caicedo in the hope of finally reaching a summer agreement to bring him to Stamford Bridge, with the new Blues boss feeling he is "the ideal player" to sign.

"Chelsea are ready to speed things up for Caicedo [by] making a new bid in the next days. The position of Brighton is quite adamant, asking for at least £100m, but CFC will do their best to sign the [Ecuadorian]. Poch considers him the ideal player to strengthen the midfield."

Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo.

How good is Moises Caicedo?

Chelsea will know that Caicedo is stronger in the natural defensive midfield aspect of his game having registered just one goal and assist last season in the Premier League, but having been dubbed a “Machine Man” sitting in front of the backline by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Pochettino admiring him so much comes as no surprise.

The Futbol Division client won a total of 50 out of his 100 tackles over the course of the previous campaign which was the highest success rate throughout the whole of his squad, via FBRef, not to mention that he also averaged 1.5 interceptions per top-flight game, highlighting his desire to win back possession for his team.

The World Cup participant additionally has the flexibility to operate slightly higher up in central midfield and even at right-back alongside his usual role which is yet another attractive attribute, so he would provide the Blues with plenty of versatility should he put pen to paper in the weeks ahead.

With Brighton appearing to stand firm on their valuation, Boehly will know that he'll seriously need to splash the cash if he wants to acquire the services of his long-term target in Caicedo, and there's no doubt that he's a player who could prove to be a shrewd signing in London.

Eskinazi grit keeps Middlesex above water

Stevie Eskinazi’s career-best, unbeaten 178 was the mainstay for Middlesex as they ground to within striking distance of Warwickshire

The considerable fillip Warwickshire drew from dismissing Sam Robson for a third-ball duck was counterbalanced by a century from Stevie Eskinazi in which the South Africa-born batsman produced some good, aggressive strokeplay but also had to show some gritty qualities and ride his luck.Eskinazi, whose 157 against Yorkshire at Scarborough this time last year was one of the key innings of Middlesex’s title-winning season, doubled his tally of career first-class centuries to four with his second of this season, consolidating his position as leading run-scorer.Although born in Johannesburg, Eskinazi has an English mother and a Zimbabwe-born father and after playing some junior cricket in Hampshire moved with his family to Perth, in Western Australia, where he played representative state cricket at under-17 and under-19.Goodness knows where that leaves him in terms of nationality, although that is a matter for another day. For the moment, he is unbeaten on 178, having overtaken his Scarborough scored to guarantee himself a new career-best with his 23rd four after more than five hours at the crease.By the close, against the team propping up the table and desperate to find a first win, he had hit 24 fours and pulled Boyd Rankin for three sixes, which were impressive statistics, although he had been well into three figures before he began to look properly comfortable. At times earlier he had looked anything but, as was illustrated, even on 116 and 124 against a ball that was 55 overs old, when he twice edged Rankin to the boundary through gaps in the cordon.Another difficult over earlier in the day had seen Rikki Clarke beat him twice but somehow miss the stumps. There was a close call on a run-out too and, not long afterwards, a sharp chance offered to wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose when Jeetan Patel entered the attack after 31 overs and Eskinazi was on 56.All of that followed a massive appeal for a catch in the gully off the first ball he faced, which was turned down on the basis that the deflection was off pads only. How different the day might have been had the finger gone up at that moment, given that Keith Barker, spearing the ball in from around the wicket, had dismissed Robson leg-before with the immediately previous delivery. Robson has twice hit a double-hundred against Warwickshire. But if he was lucky at times, Eskinazi might reasonably claim he earned it on a pitch of unreliable bounce that had a nasty surprise in store for a number of batsman.Earlier in the day, Barker had been denied a half-century with the bat when he was deceived into playing too soon at a ball from Tim Murtagh, connecting with a leading edge. Murtagh, going down low in his follow-through, took a good return catch.Nick Compton suffered in a more painful way, hit first in the box and then on the inside of the left knee by balls that did not get up. The second blow forced him to retire on 12, although he was able to return after the fall of the next wicket, when Patel’s second ball accounted for Dawid Malan, who went back to cut but could only nudge the ball into the gloves of Ambrose, who this time held the chance, albeit none too tidily.Like Nick Gubbins, who was left out of this match through lack of runs, Compton has not had a productive season. It would have been a toss up between the two of them as to who stood aside to make way for Robson’s return from the Lions. Compton’s hundred against Essex last week came at just the right moment. He did not look vastly more on top of things in his second spell at the crease and had reached 33 when Clarke returned for a new spell and had him caught behind off a thin edge with his second delivery. That left Middlesex 195 for 3, following which a terrific catch from Matt Lamb at point in the next over ensured Paul Stirling’s stay was brief, the 20-year-old hanging on to a full-blooded cut off Rankin. After a mostly sunny day, Patel increasingly came into his own deep into the final session, when he had John Simpson caught off bat and pad at short leg and Ryan Higgins caught behind, feathering a catch after shaping to cut.Spin could become a bigger factor still on the last two days, so Middlesex will look to Eskinazi to squeeze out a few more runs yet to give them a lead.

Everton Reach Agreement In Principle To Sign "Interesting" 19 y/o Ace

Everton have now reached an agreement in principle with Sporting CP to sign Youssef Chermiti, with a deal now in place for the striker to move to Goodison Park, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Are Everton signing a striker?

Sean Dyche is still on the lookout for new attacking options, with Leicester City's Kelechi Iheanacho being considered, having registered his interest in signing the Nigerian forward back in July.

Football Insider report that Michail Antonio could now re-emerge as a target for Everton, following the collapse of his move to the Saudi Pro League, with West Ham United open to offers for the 33-year-old, who has less than one year left on his contract.

Almeria striker El Bilal Toure has also been "tracked for a while", with journalist Ryan Taylor detailing that "talks were advanced", however they may face competition for his signature from Serie A side Atalanta.

The Toffees are running the rule over some strikers from further afield, with it recently being reported they are in talks over a move to sign Corinthians' Yuri Alberto, although journalist Dominik Schneider adds there is "nothing concrete".

However, Dyche has managed to make a breakthrough in his pursuit of Chermiti, as Romano has now taken to Twitter to report that an agreement in principle has been reached with Sporting CP over a move for the striker.

A deal is now "in place" between the two clubs for the 19-year-old to complete a move to Goodison Park, with a fee being agreed verbally, which indicates the deal is now edging towards completion.

"Everton reached an agreement in principle with Sporting to sign Youssef Chermiti as new striker," the reporter shared on Twitter. "Deal in place between clubs — verbally agreed in the recent hours for 2004 born striker to join PL side."

Who is Youssef Chermiti?

Born in Santa Maria, Portugal, the forward has managed to come through the youth ranks at Sporting CP, before establishing himself as a first-team player last season, weighing in with three goals and two assists in 16 Liga Portugal outings.

The Sporting academy graduate has been capped for the Portugal U19 team, making four appearances, during which time he has scored three goals, highlighting his attacking threat, however there are doubts over whether he will be able to make an instant impact at Goodison Park.

Over the past year, the Portuguese attacker has vastly underperformed his expected goals, averaging just 0.32 goals per 90, when he was expected to score 0.54, and he ranks in just the 34th percentile for aerials won per 90.

That is quite disappointing, given that the youngster is 6 foot 3, and he may still have a lot of work to do before he is able to establish himself as a key first-team player for the Toffees.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has described the starlet as "very interesting", and he still has a lot of time on his side to develop his game, so he could still end up being a shrewd acquisition for Dyche.

However, Everton need to make sure they bring in additional options in attack, ideally with proven Premier League experience, as it would be risky to head into the new campaign with a young player who is unproven outside of Portugal leading the line.

Rangers Could Secure An Upgrade On Balogun With 6 Foot 3 "Success"

Glasgow Rangers have undoubtedly strengthened their attacking options during the summer transfer window.

Teddy Bears boss Michael Beale has signed Cyriel Dessers, Abdallah Sima, and Sam Lammers, with a move for Danilo edging closer and this new look is exactly what the Gers needed.

Improvements are still required in defence, however, especially following the performance against Olympiacos.

How did Rangers perform against Olympiacos?

The Greek outfit were the visitors to Ibrox on Wednesday evening for a pre-season friendly, and they left Glasgow with a 3-1 victory.

Of course, results tend not to matter during the off-season, yet the Gers were one step off the pace throughout the whole evening and with Borna Barisic making a mistake for their second goal, being caught out by the high ball over the top, Beale needs a rethink.

Ben Davies and John Souttar were the central defensive partnership during the defeat and with 35-year-old Leon Balogun arriving at the club for his second spell in Glasgow, the manager clearly needs another centre-back ahead of the Premiership season.

Could Rangers sign Auston Trusty?

Young defender Leon King suffered a serious injury a few weeks ago and it prompted the decision to bring Balogun back, however, the move doesn’t exactly inspire confidence among the supporters.

Despite a productive spell between 2020 and 2022, winning the league and Scottish Cup, the Nigerian international started just 15 Championship games for Queens Park Rangers last term due to various injury issues.

The Light Blues have also been linked with Arsenal defender Auston Trusty throughout the summer, and he could certainly become an instant upgrade on Balogun should he make the move north of the border before the window shuts.

The American machine enjoyed a stunning campaign on loan at Birmingham City, winning the Supporter’s Player of the Season award and journalist Charles Watts even described his loan as being a “huge success” after he made 48 appearances across all competitions.

The 24-year-old gem ranked second in the squad for tackles made per game (2.3), while ranking first and fourth for interceptions (1.5) and clearances (four) per game respectively, showcasing just how impressive he was for the club at the heart of their defence.

Former Birmingham loanee Auston Trusty.

By comparison, Balogun ranked fifth for tackles per game (1.6), yet he did rank first for interceptions (1.8) and second for clearances (4.3) per game which indicates that he also had a fairly positive influence on his team, despite his lack of matches.

The mooted transfer target does pose a bigger danger in front of goal, however, scoring four times compared to just once for the 35-year-old, and he also created more big chances (three to zero) and made more key passes per game (0.4 to zero), demonstrating that although Balogun may have not lost his defensive ability, he could struggle to adapt to Beale’s need for a forward-thinking defender.

Trusty could adapt to this role extremely well and with Balogun approaching the end of his career, he shouldn’t be called upon every game.

The 6 foot 3 titan has shown he can perform well in a tough league such as the Championship and given time to develop at a club like Rangers, he could surpass Balogun.
