Arsenal Could Sign Unprecedented £26m Star

Arsenal battled well with Manchester City for the Premier League title, but in the end, their quality in depth ultimately told.

Mikel Arteta was left wounded at the failure to secure silverware, but well aware of the progress made in just one year. Despite that, they remain so far away from their rivals.

Manchester United were shown this too at Wembley yesterday, with Pep Guardiola's side winning 2-1 without really getting out of third gear. It marked the second of three trophies they are set to claim this term, with next week's Champions League final the only thing that stands in the way of their infamous treble.

When the pressure has ramped up, whilst some of the Gunners' squad arguably went into hiding, there have been a few key players at the Etihad that have instead stepped up.

Arguably few have done so as dramatically as yesterday's FA Cup final hero; Ilkay Gundogan added another two goals to his phenomenal goalscoring campaign to win them the trophy.

The German has announced himself as one of the best all-around midfielders in the Premier League of late, leading every team to question how they could emulate his success.

Fortunately for Edu, an opportunity to purchase their own version of the 32-year-old has arisen, with reports linking them with a potential €30m (£26m) move for PSV Eindhoven's Xavi Simons.

Could Xavi Simons emulate Ilkay Gundogan?

As a classy yet combative goalscoring maestro, the Netherlands international has all the qualities to emulate City's ageing superstar but at just 20 years old.

Having notched 11 goals and assisted a further seven in all competitions, Gundogan has shown up in key moments with vital strikes of late.

His brace at Goodison Park saw them cruise through a tricky fixture against Everton, just a week after he had done the same to relegation-threatened Leeds United. He even assisted Kevin De Bruyne's strike in their first-leg draw against Real Madrid, to emphasise his creativity before reaching the apex yesterday.

Guardiola noted after that triumph: "The player is exceptional. This season what he has done is just exceptional. Not just being part of the important moments and I don't forget the two goals he scored against Aston Villa [in 2022] and this season many times he’s scored important goals. It’s for the fact how important he is in many, many reasons."

Whilst Simons has enjoyed a far greater year in front of goal, with 22 goals and 12 assists to his name, the youngster has been deployed in a far more advanced midfield role to allow him to shine creatively. However, having recorded 1.4 tackles per game too, he showcases a defensive grit that could allow him to occupy a similar role to Gundogan, just beside a figure like Thomas Partey.

After all, the former Borussia Dortmund gem only manages one tackle per game himself in the league, but his intelligence allows him to add to their unstoppable system at both ends of the pitch.

The youth of Simons would likely attract Arteta too, given how malleable he remains. His former boss Ruud van Nistelrooy could not speak highly enough on his potential, claiming: "He’s doing everything he can to get to the top, his top. And where that will be, that’s the beautiful challenge. His mentality, his mindset, it’s unprecedented."

In acquiring him now, it would allow them to immediately begin his transformation into a player as decisive as this Guardiola favourite, who has played such a key role in the success they have already achieved.

Khawaja replaces Shaun Marsh

Allrounder James Faulkner and batsman Shaun Marsh have both been ruled out of Australia’s one-day tour of South Africa due to injuries. Usman Khawaja has been called into the squad in place of Marsh, while Faulkner will not be replaced in the squad, which as a result will be reduced from 15 men to 14.Marsh suffered a fractured finger during the recent tour of Sri Lanka and while he was initially named in the ODI squad to visit South Africa, further x-rays have encouraged Australia to take a more conservative approach with him. Faulkner suffered a calf strain at Australia’s training session on Thursday, and is expected to be sidelined for up to a month.Australia’s 14-man squad

“Shaun undertook a follow up x-ray and was reviewed by specialists this week,” David Beakley, the team physio, said. “Unfortunately due to the fracture being in the joint of the finger we have decided to take a more conservative approach, therefore he will not be available for the ODI series in South Africa.”James suffered a low grade calf strain during a fitness session in Sydney today which we expect to take three to four weeks to recover. Unfortunately this means he will also be unavailable for the South Africa series.”Australia’s first ODI in South Africa is against Ireland on September 27, before they begin a five-match series against South Africa on September 30.

Arsenal: Gunners Have "Upper Hand" For Major Signing

Arsenal have the "upper hand" over all of their rivals in the race to sign West Ham United star Declan Rice, even despite Pep Guardiola personally speaking to the player.

Who could Arsenal sign this summer?

The north Londoners are being lead by sporting director Edu and co in their hunt for midfield upgrades, with Arsenal eyeing many different names to shore up the position.

Reports suggest they could even make multiple signings there, leading to serious interest in Rice, Brighton's Moises Caicedo and Man City captain Ilkay Gundogan.

Southampton's Romeo Lavia and Wolves star Ruben Neves have also been mentioned in parts, though Rice appears to be one of manager Mikel Arteta's top transfer targets.

As well as the midfield era, Arsenal want to sign new full-backs, with City's Joao Cancelo, Real Valladolid starlet Ivan Fresneda and Galatasary's Sacha Boey all being linked.

Going back to midfield and Rice in particular, The Guardian and journalist Jacob Steinberg have an update on Arsenal's pursuit of the 24-year-old.

West Ham's Declan Rice

The England international, who could win his first ever major trophy tonight as West Ham take on Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final, has suitors up and down the country.

However, the "smart money" is on Arsenal, who have the "upper hand" over the rivals when it comes to signing Rice. City boss Pep Guardiola has apparently even spoken to the midfielder personally, but the Premier League champions aren't seeking to replace Rodri.

Who is Declan Rice?

The Hammers captain and has been indispensable for David Moyes – standing out as their best-performing player in the top flight last season.

Rice made more interceptions per 90 than any other West Ham player in that time (WhoScored), with former England captain Stuart Pearce (talkSPORT via football.london) raving over his ability to drive past players.

"You see him pick the ball up and someone shuts him down and he drives past them as though they are not there," Pearce said.

"And these are Premier League players he is up against and he drives past them, you see people going to shut him down and that five yards of explosion it is as though those players don't get set and they are not ready for it, he moves that quickly over the ground."

Called "underrated" by sections of the media also, he would be a stellar addition for Arsenal, and it looks like they're certainly the clear favourites.

BCCI misinterpreted committee's email – Lodha

RM Lodha has said the BCCI has “misinterpreted” the committee’s email to two banks on Monday, asking them to not disburse funds from the board’s account to its state associations

BCCI’s accounts have not been frozen – Lodha

RM Lodha, the chairman of the Lodha Committee, has said the BCCI has “misinterpreted” the committee’s email to two banks on Monday, asking them to not disburse funds from the board’s account to its state associations regarding two specific transactions.”This is a misinterpretation or misconstruing of the email that was sent to the BCCI yesterday,” Lodha told ANI on Tuesday. “We have not frozen any of the accounts… routine expenses for matches, cricket activities and administrative matters are not restrained.”NZC chief David White on the cancellation claim

“We’re just waiting to hear back from the BCCI, seeking clarification from them. We haven’t heard from them as yet. As far as we are concerned we are planning to get on a plane tomorrow to travel to Indore to prepare for the third Test,” White told . “The article in the newspaper, that’s how I found out earlier this morning from our people in New Zealand. But it’s speculation, we’re just waiting to get clarification from the BCCI.
“I’m not quite sure of the process here with the Supreme Court and what the BCCI are going through at the moment. There’s been a lot going on obviously and it’s a tense situation I’d imagine, we’re just here to play cricket and get ready for the third Test.”

An unnamed BCCI official had been quoted by Indian media as saying that the board was considering cancelling the remainder of the ongoing home series against New Zealand. His reasoning was that with the accounts frozen it was impossible for the board to function.”Really unfortunate that all BCCI accounts have been frozen, there can’t be any tournament without money,” Thakur was later quoted as saying by the . “Cricket cannot run without money. We don’t take money from the government. We are not allowed to make payments. I can’t say anything about the India – New Zealand series. Team India is No. 1 today, when we are financing state boards, questions are being raised.”Lodha said that interpretation of the committee’s directive was inaccurate. “It is so clear,” he said of the email. “It doesn’t require any clarification.”There is no question of cancellation of any game or series. The directive which we issued to BCCI yesterday in our email is confined to disbursement of large funds to state association and banks have been directed to ensure compliance of that. Nothing beyond that,” Lodha said. “Routine expenses for matches, games, cricketing activities and other administrative matters, they are not at all restrained. There is absolutely no prohibition. There is no constraint.  The accounts of BCCI have not been frozen. This is not correct reading of our email rather I would say this is misinterpreting or misconstruing the email.”Lodha said no one from the BCCI contacted him or the committee for a clarification. “Had they contacted we would have clarified then and there. We find there is no ambiguity in our email. It is unequivocal. It is absolutely clear.”Some media outlets referenced a letter from a Bank of Maharashtra official to the BCCI on Monday, saying the bank was likely to stop transactions from the board’s account because of a court directive. Lodha said the banks might have failed to understand the committee’s email and that a clarification had been sent to them.”The banks, it appears, out of their sheer anxiety or I don’t know for what reason, they have not read the email fairly and passed an order for freezing the accounts,” Lodha said. “But that was absolutely wrong and in the morning, as soon as we came to know, I have already clarified. Even an email has been sent to both the banks to de-freeze the account and BCCI is free to operate. I am told that it has already been done.”Responding to the directive from the Lodha Committee to halt the two payments, various BCCI officials said the decision to disburse additional funds to states under the infrastructure subsidy, and the distribution of the claims received from discontinuing the Champions League T20, had been discussed in the past by the board’s finance committee, and only a formal approval from working committee was pending. The approval was given at the emergent working committee last Friday.Lodha said, however, that the BCCI had failed to follow the timelines set by the Committee. “Had they seen our timelines properly, we had asked them to formulate (a) disbursement policy by September 30. That was not done and some additional, huge funds was going to be disbursed to the members.”

West Ham Considering Managerial Swoop For 56-Year-Old Figure

West Ham United still have a list of candidates that could replace David Moyes, with RMC Sport, via Get Football News France, reporting that Christophe Galtier is on their radar as someone who they could swoop for.

Is David Moyes staying at West Ham United?

The Hammers struggled to get going in the Premier League in the 2022/23 campaign, with the side finishing in just 14th place on 40 points. It meant that they were just six points clear of the relegation places and were a whopping 31 points away from the top four. However, despite their shortcomings in the top flight, they ended up being crowned Europa Conference League winners. With a victory over Fiorentina in the final, the club secured a European title and ended the season on a high note.

However, despite claiming that victory, the future of manager David Moyes has been uncertain. Heading into the final, it looked like a defeat could see him exit the club, while reports since have suggested that his future now remains with the Hammers. The former Man United boss has been with the club since 2019 and has now overseen 179 games with the side, averaging 1.55 points-per-match. It seems then as though his tenure may continue and he could even reach 200 games with the club.

A report from RMC Sport though suggests otherwise. They state that West Ham do have candidates that could replace Moyes at the club and that Christophe Galtier is one of the names they are considering. The manager has recently been in charge of PSG but is set to leave the club according to this report and has plenty of other clubs sniffing around him.

What is Christophe Galtier's managerial record?

Galtier is coming off his best ever season as a manager when it comes to points-per-match average. With PSG, the boss managed a total of 2.16 ppm. Prior to that, he was in charge at Nice in France and managed a respectable 1.84 with that side too. He also has plenty of experience in terms of winning silverware, having won the Ligue 1 title on two occasions, as well as the French League Cup and French Super Cup.

If West Ham did decide that now was the time to part ways with Moyes then, Galtier could be a more than adequate replacement for the manager – although he has yet to be tested in the Premier League and has only ever been a boss in France.

Pattern of collapses 'hard to take' – Warner

The Australia batsman admitted that the trend of the side’s middle-order collapses after a good start goes back to the 2015 Ashes tour

Daniel Brettig in Perth04-Nov-2016

David Warner: “It’s tough to see as an opening batter sometimes when you get off to those starts as a top four and then you sort of fall away that easily.”•Getty Images

David Warner admits that Australia’s batsmen have fallen into a debilitating pattern of middle-order batting collapses that are wasting decent starts, and also says he does not know how the problem will be rectified.Having made 97 in an opening stand of 158 with Shaun Marsh, Warner said he was demoralised by watching the loss of all Australia’s 10 wickets for 86, surrendering prime position in the WACA Test to South Africa despite the visiting team’s loss of Dale Steyn to a serious shoulder injury. The passage of play mirrored numerous innings on the recent tour of Sri Lanka despite vastly different conditions, and Warner said he could see the pattern stretching even further back, to the 2015 Ashes tour.”I feel there has been a trend as well in the last 12 and maybe 18 months that also follows on to when we were in England and we were playing there,” Warner said. “It’s tough to see as an opening batter sometimes when you get off to those starts as a top four and then you sort of fall away that easily.”It’s quite hard to take that when you’re in the change rooms. I can’t really remember, unless we go back to Hobart last year, where we really capitalised in that middle period. That’s something we’ve really got to work hard on, and at the moment I don’t really have the answers.”But we have to really knuckle down as a batting unit and try to build partnerships. We always talk about someone going on to get a big hundred in the top four, but it’s on everyone else in the middle as well to put their hand up and accept some responsibility to move forward as well and create that partnership.”The Australian middle order seems an area for particular concern, most notably the failings of the allrounder Mitchell Marsh and the wicketkeeper Peter Nevill. Both were put more or less on notice before this match by the selection chairman Rod Marsh, but neither could assert themselves on day two – Nevill admittedly on the wrong end of an apparently incorrect decision after making a start. Warner said Marsh needed to work out how he batted best.”You have to back yourself as a player, whether or not there’s mixed messages there, him as a player knows and understands the game,” Warner said. “He’s here at this level for a reason, he’s been chosen and selected in the team for a reason, that’s to score runs and take wickets. He has to work out what he has to do to score runs and take wickets for the team. Then for his sake he’ll gain a bit of momentum.”I’ve been at the other end, I go back to a game at Wellington where he came out and won us the game against New Zealand, he played his strokes and played beautifully. That’s the Mitch Marsh we know as well. I’m pretty sure for him as an individual I don’t think he’s clouded in any way.”Pondering the state of the game with Steyn ruled out and the pitch currently playing well but likely to deteriorate, Warner said the first session on day three would be vital, with early wickets a must.”We’ve seen here before once it’s a great batting surface as it is. If you get yourself in, make the most of it and capitalise I think anything’s chase-able,” Warner said. “They need to bat for two days if they can with two frontline bowlers, so we have to come out and bowl well. We’re going to have to work really hard in that first session.”They’ve still got two very, very good fast bowlers, and we’ve seen the wickets they’re capable of with the ball going both ways. We have to respect that. We can’t look too far forward. We’ve got to bowl well first tomorrow, then we’ve got to know that you get through that first period with the new ball they can only revert back to spin. We’ve got to really knuckle down and apply that pressure on their two frontline bowlers.”I’m disappointed for Dale, all the amp and the talk in this series, I know how pumped he would’ve been. I know he’s had this injury for a while, I just hope he can get back on the park.”
