Arsenal: Bandeira could be the next Xhaka

Arsenal’s famous Hale End academy has churned out a number of top talents throughout the years.

Arsene Wenger had the opportunity to develop Ashley Cole, Gael Clichy and Jack Wilshere to name a few, whereas now under Mikel Arteta, the likes of Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith-Rowe are starting to blossom.

The conveyor belt of talent is seemingly never-ending, with youngsters such as Charlie Patino, Folarin Balogun, and Amario Cozier-Duberry all looking like they could become key figures in Arsenal’s first team over the next few years.

There is one teen who is currently starring for the U21 side having made the jump from the U18 last summer, and he certainly has the potential to become the next Granit Xhaka for Arteta – Mauro Bandeira.

Who is Mauro Bandeira?

Xhaka has been in inspired form under Arteta this term, adding a more attacking output to his game compared to previous seasons, and Bandeira is also adept at going forward whenever necessary.

Xhaka has scored four goals and registered five assists so far in 2022/2023 while the young Portuguese sensation has grabbed two goals and two assists in just 16 games so it looks like their styles are very much aligned.

The 30-year-old is a combative midfielder and Bandeira echoes these traits. Across three matches in the Football League Trophy, the 19-year-old who is an ‘all-action’ central player – in the words of academy expert Jeorge Bird – made 1.3 tackles and 0.7 clearances per game, while winning an impressive 56% of his total duels.

Considering Xhaka has made 0.8 tackles and won 54% of his duels in the Premier League, it suggests Bandeira is doing fairly well and could potentially be an ideal heir for him in the next couple of years.

Gooner Fanzine editor and journalist Layth Yousif claimed the youngster “looked lively” during a match last summer and the fact he has four goals and ten assists overall for the U21 and U18 age groups demonstrate that he can add that extra dynamic from the middle of the pitch and Arteta will surely be keeping a close watch on him.

A loan spell could do him the world of good, gaining experience at a League One or Championship side on a regular basis and the summer. Whatever happens, he has a big future in the game and instead of spending millions on an eventual replacement for Xhaka, Arteta may already have someone ready to slot straight in once the time is right.

Like the Swiss, he has ‘worked hard’ – per the aforementioned Bird – to improve his attacking qualities and is already training with the first team. Exciting times.

‘Joke of a club’ - Liverpool fans rage at major summer exit rumour

Liverpool supporters have raged at the news that the club have set a €70m (£62m) price tag for Diogo Jota amid interest from Premier League rivals Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Newcastle eyeing Jota

Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita, Arthur Melo, James Milner, Adrian and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will all be out of contract at the end of the season, with the majority of them likely to be departing.

The Portuguese, however, is one new name to have recently been linked with an exit after journalist Jacque Talbot reported that the Magpies are considering a move for him in the summer.

The Latest: Liverpool fans react…

Taking to Twitter, Liverpool lovers expressed their opinions on Jota potentially being sold to Newcastle and it’s fair to say they weren’t happy.

They said:

I’d be absolutely shocked if Klopp sold him!!!!!” – @Ac1984Ross

After what John Henry said, we’re definitely selling him if we’re going to buy anyone in the summer. What a joke of a club.” – @AlexisManolis1

Selling him would be a very bad idea.” – @Babini_R

They can just stay away.” – @LfcMatthi

NOT A CHANCE!!!!”- @anfield_buzz

Triple it. Saudi Arabia can pay state owned tax if they want to do business. Although in all seriousness I don’t think we should engage in any business with them. Why would we help a team that already has a massive financial advantage over every other team.” – @fatpanda72

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/liverpool-transfer-news-and-rumours/” title=”Liverpool Transfer News and Rumours” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/cropped-2021-03-07T155652Z_1459311687_UP1EH3718ASBK_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LIV-FUL-REPORT.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Don’t let him go

Jota has had a hugely positive impact at Liverpool since joining, posting 49 goal contributions in 99 appearances, so it’s important that they do everything they can to keep hold of him.

FSG and Jurgen Klopp are in a very strong negotiating position though with his contract not set to expire until 2027, so won’t be forced into sanctioning a sale.

Newcastle: Eddie Howe must unleash his "huge talent" tonight

Newcastle United return to Premier League action away to relegation strugglers Nottingham Forest this evening, with Eddie Howe's men going into that mouthwatering meeting having got back to winning ways against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend.

After a run of five league games without tasting victory, the Magpies got their top-four bid back on track with a hard-fought, 2-1 win over the Old Gold on Sunday afternoon, with goals from Alexander Isak and Miguel Almiron proving the difference on the day.

The Tynesiders will no doubt be favourites to make it successive league wins when they take on Steve Cooper's side later today, albeit with Howe having a handful of selection headaches to contend with for the trip to the City Ground.

The club's lack of midfield depth is set to be tested with Brazilian gem Joelinton serving the second match of his two-game suspension, with there having been claims that Sean Longstaff could be among the doubts – having not been pictured in training on Wednesday.

Therefore, it could well be time for Howe to put his faith in academy graduate, Elliot Anderson, with the 20-year-old starlet likely hoping to nail down a regular role in the side after making a string of cameo appearances this season.

Will Anderson start against Forest?

The Whitley Bay-born gem has been restricted to just four starts in all competitions this season, with his solitary start in the league at home to Liverpool ultimately ending in disappointment as he was withdrawn after just 24 minutes, following Nick Pope's clumsy red card.

Undoubtedly a "huge talent" – as praised by Bristol Rovers boss Joey Barton – the exciting playmaker is no doubt deserving of another opportunity to truly prove his worth in the top flight, with Newcastle likely to benefit from having his creative flair in midfield.

The Scotland U21 international – who is the subject of interest from the England camp amid talk of a change in allegiance – showcased his quality during his loan spell under Barton last season, scoring eight goals and providing five assists in just 21 League Two games for the club in their successful promotion charge.

Anderson-Newcastle-Howe-Premier-League-opinion

While Anderson is yet to get off the mark with regard to goal involvements this season, tonight's encounter could be an opportune time to put that right, with the youngster hoping to get the better of former midfield colleague, Jonjo Shelvey.

The latter man – who ended his seven-year stay at St James' Park in January – will likely not relish coming up against such a sparkling prospect, with young Anderson even earning comparisons to the late, great Diego Maradona from the aforementioned Barton for his ball-playing prowess.

The "effortless" gem – as hailed by former Magpies manager Steve Bruce – proved during his time at the Memorial Stadium last term that he can provide the cutting edge in the final third, with Shelvey and co set to be wary of allowing the 5 foot 10 ace the freedom to perform.

It may be a bold call to unleash Anderson this evening, although the highly-rated wonderkid will likely be chomping at the bit to make his mark at senior level.

Spurs: Daniel Levy makes contact with 48 y/o boss

Tottenham Hotspur could well have identified a possible successor to Antonio Conte at N17, with the Italian looking increasingly likely to be axed in the near future.

What's the latest on Oliver Glasner to Spurs?

According to German outlet, BILD, the Lilywhites are believed to have made 'contact' with Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner regarding the possibility of replacing the former Chelsea boss in the dugout, with recent reports claiming that Conte could be sacked this week, following his recent, post-Southampton outburst.

The suggestion is that the north Londoners are 'now interested' in potentially turning to Glasner to fill the position, with the 48-year-old – who has been in charge of the Bundesliga side since 2021 – having just over a year left on his existing deal in Frankfurt.

Would Glasner be a good fit for Spurs?

The former LASK head coach has certainly caught the attention as a result of his fine work in Germany of late, having notably guided his side to Europa League glory last season, before securing progression into the last-16 of the Champions League this time around, finishing second in Group D – just a point behind Conte's men.

Despite the solid body of work that the Austrian has amassed in his managerial career thus far, there may be concerns that Tottenham would be simply appointing a carbon copy of their current manager, were chairman Daniel Levy to make a concrete approach for Glasner.

That likeness to Conte is showcased by the fact that the pair both typically utilise a back three, while the former Wolfsburg boss also appears something of a pragmatic coach, with his side's playing style having been outlined by Barcelona's Xavi last season:

"They play on the counter-attack and counter-press in a way I’ve only seen from a few teams in my career."

With Spurs supporters likely sick to death of Conte's "negative", counter-attacking methods – as described by Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville – the fear will be that Glasner's arrival could merely continue that brand of football, rather than spark a transformation to a more progressive and free-flowing model.

Equally, on a weekend in which Conte simply exploded following his side's late collapse away to the Saints – hitting out at his "selfish" players – the Frankfurt man also publicly outlined his anger with his squad following the defeat to Union Berlin, having questioned the "quality" of his charges.

Antonio Conte shouting on the sidelines in Tottenham Hotspur's Premier League win over Nottingham Forest.

Although that may simply be a sign of Glasner's desire to win, such an approach has seemingly not proved fruitful for managers at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium of late, with the typically ruthless Jose Mourinho having also alienated members of the squad prior to his sacking in 2021, with The Athletic referencing the 'divide' that had emerged in the latter days of the Portuguese's time at the club.

Not that there is anything wrong with having a demanding manager who strives for perfection, yet Levy will likely be wary of repeating recent managerial errors by securing a dominant figure who could ultimately end up alienating the squad.

As such, while there is undoubtedly merit in the links to Glasner, the Austrian's apparent likeness to the under-fire Conte should well be something of a red flag.

£70k-p/w Bukayo Saka Always Destined For Arsenal Glory

Journalist Charles Watts has claimed that he knew Arsenal star Bukayo Saka was "different" after he first spoke to the press as a 17-year-old.

What's the latest on Bukayo Saka and Arsenal?

It's safe to say the Englishman was truly established himself as one of the world's most exciting talents this season – if there were even any remaining doubts about that.

Indeed, he has led the Gunners on their Premier League title charge, scoring 12 goals and ten providing ten assists – helping him come to the attention of A-lister Kim Kardashian.

And over the weekend, he dished up another reminder of his quality, this time for England as he scores a superb goal and claimed a fine assist as the Three Lions beat Ukraine 2-0

Noting his progress, Watts recalled one of the first times he spoke to Saka in the press mixed zone after the youngster scored his first goal for the club.

He explained on his YouTube channel (3:00): “I remember being in Frankfurt, for the Europa League game, we scored his first goal for Arsenal in that 3-0 win.

"And then all the journalists who were there, we all went down in the stadium by the change room waiting to speak to Saka and Arsenal brought him out. And they were saying: look, this is his first interview, he's 17, just take it easy with him.

“But from the moment he came out there, and he stood in front of us – this big sort of group of press that for a 17-year-old it can be a pretty nerve-racking experience – and he just handled it so well.

"And you immediately thought, yeah, you've got your head properly screwed on. You could see he was different to a lot of other kids that you've seen come through.

“But having said that, even I'm surprised by exactly where he is, where he's gone, and how quickly the trajectory of his career has gone upwards. He's just an absolutely wonderful player."

Just how good is Bukayo Saka?

After that win in 2019, Saka told the press: "I'm so happy to score for Arsenal. It's a dream come true, I've been dreaming of this day since I was a kid and I'm so happy that's happened. I've just got to keep working hard to make sure I can enjoy the same feeling again."

The Englishman was handed the man of the match award for his efforts too, having also set up two further goals and Charlie Nicholas told Sky Sports after the game: "The boy Saka looks a special player to me. He could be a superstar."

The pundit certainly wasn't wrong and it seems as though Watts' instincts were pretty good too as the 21-year-old now has 36 goals and 39 assists in 169 outings for Arsenal.

He's taken his game up a level this season though and Pundit Lucy Ward noted that back in October when she told BY Sport (via The Boot Room: “What a gem Saka is on that right-hand side for Arsenal. He’s really showed his maturity this season."

Indeed, he was even the first player to reach double figures for goals and assists in the Premier League this season. What's more he did aged 21, meaning he is the youngest Arsenal player to do it, beating Cesc Fabregas' record of 22 years old from 2009/10.

With all that in mind, it's little wonder his reported £70,000-per-week wage could soon rise to £200,000 or more.

Questions Over £43k-p/w USMNT Star At Leeds United

YouTuber Conor McGilligan has slammed Leeds United midfielder Brenden Aaronson and questioned whether he can even kick the ball hard enough to deliver key goalscoring contributions.

What's the latest on Brenden Aaronson and Leeds?

With the international break now upon us, it's a great time for Premier League clubs to reflect on the current season as we head into the final run-in.

Leeds currently sit 14th in the division, just two points above the bottom three with just 11 games left to ensure they don't end up getting relegated.

Alongside fellow USMNT star Weston McKennie, Aaronson has left England to go and represent his country as they look to progress to the CONCACAF Nations League Final Four.

While he's done enough to maintain his status in the US side, it seems as though things haven't been going too well for the 22-year-old at Leeds as he has failed to deliver a goalscoring contribution since the return of Premier League football after the break for the winter World Cup.

And while speaking on the One Leeds Fan Channel, McGilligan dropped some pretty damning claims on Aaronson, expressing doubt over his ability to deliver the goods when needed.

He said: "Listen, I'm willing to be proven wrong here, by the way, always. But those fine moments where you're playing as a central attacking midfielder and under pressure, you need to play that pass, you need to have a strike on goal. You know, all those technicalities, I just don't know if he's got the ball-striking ability.

"I've never seen him hit a ball hard. You know, a free kick, you normally get a lot of central attacking midfielders as being able to take set pieces. I don't really see that with him.

"And I just think some of the central attacking midfielders in world football you'd expect Leeds to maybe look at in the next couple of years would come in and naturally be picked over Aaronson straight away."

brenden-aaronson-performance-leeds-united-javi-gracia-premier-league

Where has it all gone from for Aaronson with Leeds?

The midfielder left Red Bull Salzburg in the summer to join the Whites on a five-year contract after a £25m transfer, while he earns a reported £43,000 a week.

Things got off to a pretty bright start for Aaronson in England too as he scored on his third Premier League outing for the Whites in a 3-0 win over Chelsea, before getting his first assist two games later.

Since then, however, he has just one more assist in the top flight which came back in November, playing in 12 more league games and four FA Cup matches without scoring or setting anyone up.

With that in mind, it's not hard to see why McGilligan has expressed such major doubts over the player's ability to deliver in the final third of the pitch.

Still only 22, however, perhaps Aaronson can turn things around in the future to fulfil his potential.

Arsenal Strongly Interested In Signing £118k-p/w Star

Arsenal are strongly interested in signing Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio this summer, and he is set to leave the La Liga club, according to a recent report.

Who will Marco Asensio sign for this summer?

With Asensio's contract set to expire at the end of the season, he will be free to leave Real Madrid, and there have been a number of top clubs linked with moves for the winger, including bitter rivals Barcelona, who are said to have made contact.

There has also been an approach made by the Gunners, having already made contact with people in the Spaniard's camp, however, they are not the only Premier League club interested in his signature, with Liverpool also eyeing a deal.

Newcastle United have been named as potential suitors by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, although he also states Real Madrid have discussed new terms with the £118k-per-week earner, which suggests could end up remaining in the Spanish capital.

A report from TuttoMercatoWeb offers up different information, stating that the playmaker is set to leave Los Blancos in the summer, and Arsenal are said to be one of the clubs strongly interested.

AC Milan are also thinking about a move for the 27-year-old, amid the uncertainty surrounding the future of Brahim Diaz, another player the Gunners are believed to be readying an offer for.

Would Marco Asensio be a good signing for Arsenal?

The right-winger has been hailed by members of the media this season, being described as "sensational" for the impact he has made off the bench, and he has recently started to impress right from the off.

In Real Madrid's most recent match, they ran out 6-0 winners against Real Valladolid, with the 35-time Spain international bagging a goal and an assist, and he has now scored on five occasions in his last eight games.

The Mallorca-born maestro scored 10 La Liga goals last season, and his ability to pick out his teammates is also very impressive, ranking in the 94th percentile for passes completed per 90 in the past year, when compared to other wingers.

Arsenal are blessed with options in attack, and they are looking to tie Bukayo Saka down to a new deal before the summer, meaning it is unclear how much game time the former Espanyol man could actually receive in London. However, considering he will be available on a free transfer, Asensio may still be a worthwhile addition to Arteta's squad.

Arsenal Planning Contract Talks With £83k-p/w Star

Arsenal are planning to "step up" contract talks with Aaron Ramsdale as we approach the back end of the Premier League season, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Which Arsenal players will be offered new contracts?

With the Gunners currently sitting top of the Premier League table, six points clear of Manchester City, it is no real wonder Mikel Arteta wants to tie down a number of first team players to new contracts, having already agreed terms with Gabriel Martinelli.

Bukayo Saka is in line for a new deal, with it being reported at one point that a verbal agreement had been reached, while captain Martin Odegaard is set to be offered a new long-term contract, in a deal that would run until 2030.

Arteta is also keen on extending defender William Saliba's stay at the Emirates Stadium, although he has already turned down an extension, as the offer was significantly less than what he had been hoping for.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, Jones confirmed that Arsenal are set to enter discussions with Ramsdale soon, although it is not yet considered a pressing matter.

The journalist said: "I think Ramsdale is going to be an important one as we start to get out of this season, as that will be a situation they start to look at. There's no urgency around Ramsdale right now.

"He's still got two years left after this season. That’s because of how well things have gone with him, as he's been a great fit for not just the playing style, but as a personality as well.

"Ramsdale's extension is going to be something we hear more and more about at the back end of this season in terms of Arsenal trying to step up talks to get him tied down to a new deal.”

Does Aaron Ramsdale deserve a new contract?

There is no doubt that the 24-year-old has earned a new deal, as the goalkeeper, who currently earns £83k-per-week, has been fantastic for Arsenal so far this season, keeping 12 league clean sheets, the third-highest amount in the top flight.

Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale reacts

Members of the media praised the shot-stopper for another fantastic performance in the 2-2 draw against Liverpool on Sunday, hailing him as "absolutely sensational", while also giving him credit for some important saves in the latter stages of the match.

Ramsdale is already contracted until 2025, with an option for an extra year, meaning Arsenal are at no risk of losing him any time soon, but fresh terms should still be offered at the earliest opportunity, to ensure his long-term future is at the Emirates Stadium.

Liverpool Approach Agents Of 20 y/o Summer Target

Liverpool have already made contact with the agents of the Bayern Munich midfielder Ryan Gravenberch over a potential summer swoop.

Will Liverpool sign midfielders in the summer?

In what has been a season which has failed to deliver for the Reds, their midfield has been an area which has come under specific scrutiny over the course of the campaign.

There are a number of ageing players in the middle of the park for the Reds with Thiago Alcantara, Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Fabinho holding a combined average age of just over 32.

Adding to this, there are reports suggesting one of their young prospects, Fabio Carvalho, could be set for a loan move away from Anfield in the summer.

One player who has been linked to the Reds is the Dutchman, Gravenberch, who is currently spending his time watching Bayern play from the bench.

The 20-year-old has only been able to amass a mere 333 minutes of action in the Bundesliga with only 27 of them coming under Thomas Tuchel (via Transfermarkt).

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has claimed the Merseyside club have now made contact with the Dutch midfielder's representatives over a potential switch to Anfield:

(3:10) "I wanted to clarify that yes Liverpool approached the agents of Ryan Gravenberch, they had a direct contract, they want to push.

"So Liverpool are still there for Gravenberch They are not giving up they want Gravenberch, they consider Ryan Gravenberch as a perfect signing, young, talented, prepared to play a lot of games."

Could Gravenberch succeed in the Premier League?

There have been reports suggesting the Reds could also look to the likes of Matheus Nunes from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Conor Gallagher from Chelsea over the summer.

And this all comes on the back of the suggestion that Liverpool have been forced to withdraw from the race to potentially sign Jude Bellingham over the summer.

Bayern Munich's Ryan Gravenberch

Gravenberch is a player who has been labelled "special" by talkSPORT's Mark Goldbridge in the past and he has shown his ability to drive with the ball during his time in the Eredivisie with a 67.4% take-on success rate last season (via FBref).

However, he would potentially arrive at Anfield in the summer on the back of a season where he has not played regular football for Bayern.

And this does raise its own questions surrounding the player given the only examples of his success coming in the Dutch league which many will take with a pinch of salt.

This season, the Dutchman has averaged 2.96 per 90 minutes which is an impressive return and higher than that of Fabinho for the Reds (via Fbref).

But ultimately, there will be an element of risk in potentially signing the 20-year-old given his lack of exposure to one of Europe's top leagues.

However, it is also apparent there is a lot of promise surrounding this player with reports suggesting Bayern are not keen to part ways with him just yet.
