Robbie Ure could save Rangers millions

Glasgow Rangers manager Gio van Bronckhorst is facing an interesting dilemma with his options at the top end of the pitch at Ibrox.

The head coach sanctioned the sale of Cedric Itten, who was the third-choice striker last season, and brought in Croatian centre-forward Antonio Colak to bolster the squad.

However, instead of coming in as a back-up, to replace the outgoing Swiss flop, the former PAOK man has established himself as the starting number nine.

He has found the back of the net seven times in nine matches in all competitions and has been a phenomenal signing for the Light Blues.

Meanwhile, both Kemar Roofe and Alfredo Morelos have been linked with moves away from Glasgow, with the latter recently being dropped from the squad for issues with his application off the pitch.

The Colombian is also out of contract in 2023 and this means that there are huge question marks over his future, as well as Roofe’s.

This suggests that the Gers will need to be on the lookout for potential replacements for one or both of them, whether that comes on deadline day, in January, or in next summer’s transfer window.

However, Gio van Bronckhorst could prevent Ross Wilson from lavishing millions of pounds on a transfer fee and wages by unearthing 18-year-old Rangers talent Robbie Ure.

The teenager made an instant impact on his debut for the first team as he scored the opening goal in a 3-1 win over Queen of The South in the Scottish League Cup on Tuesday night.

Ahead of the match, The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell claimed that the gem has a “promising” skillset and, in an interview with Premier Sports after the game, Scott Arfield heaped praise on the ‘big man’ and described his play up front as “magic”.

The gem was handed an opportunity to play after a strong start to the campaign in the Lowlands League. He has racked up two goals and three assists in seven outings for the B team, after scoring two goals in four UEFA Youth League appearances and finding the back of the net eight times in the Lowlands League last term.

Ure has been thriving at youth level and clearly impressed van Bronckhorst enough to earn his first-team debut, which he then justified with his goal.

The Dutch head coach must now continue to help the youngster develop and offer him more opportunities in the senior side to see if he can sustain his goalscoring form over an extended run of matches.

If he can do that then the club may not need to buy a replacement for Roofe or Morelos as Ure could provide back-up to Colak and save Wilson millions in the transfer market by doing so.

Phil Hay: "Talented" Leeds ace may not play under Jesse Marsch

Leeds United correspondent Phil Hay thinks that Dan James’ Elland Road career could be over following his loan move to Fulham.

The Lowdown: Deadline Day move

The Whites were on the hunt for a new forward on deadline day, with the Welshman being sacrificed in a one-in, one-out scenario. The 24-year-old eventually made a loan move to Fulham, who hold an option to sign him permanently next summer.

James, who has been hailed by Wales head coach Robert Page as ‘unbelievable’ and ‘talented’, made his Fulham debut off the bench on Saturday, with Leeds ultimately bringing in teenager Wilfried Gnonto from FC Zurich.

The Latest: Hay’s claim

Talking in a Q&A for The Athletic about James, Hay thinks that the Wales international won’t return under Jesse Marsch next season.

The reporter claimed: “I don’t think I see Dan James coming back, or it feels like a long shot.

“James is 24. He’s not especially young and Leeds have essentially said to him that they can do without him this season.”

The Verdict: The new Costa?

Leeds have spent big on a winger in the past only for things to not work out, with £15m acquisition Helder Costa the prime example.

He has hardly featured for the Whites over the past 18 months and spent last season on loan with Valencia. The 28-year-old is now with Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia but is still under contract at Elland Road until 2024, having managed only eight goals in 71 games for his parent club.

James cost £25m from Manchester United last year but did not make the desired impact, netting just four times in 36 Premier League outings for Leeds until his loan exit for west London last week.

The 24-year-old is under contract until 2026, so if he struggles at Craven Cottage, there’s every chance that he’ll be back at Thorp Arch next summer, with Fulham having the right to refuse a permanent move.

Arsenal handed potential Partey boost

Arsenal have been handed a potential injury boost ahead of their upcoming Premier League meeting with Tottenham Hotspur.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to Otto Addo, with the Ghana manager revealing on Monday (via the Evening Standard) that, despite withdrawing from the Black Stars starting XI just minutes ahead of their 3-0 defeat to Brazil last Friday due to a knee injury – before subsequently returning to north London – the 29-year-old will return to fitness “very soon”.

Regarding the condition of the midfielder, Addo said: “Hopefully Thomas will be healthy very, very soon. We didn’t want to take that risk in a friendly game to play him against Brazil, but surely playing a player like him against a squad like Brazil would have been helpful.”

Great news for Arteta

With Addo suggesting that Partey’s withdrawal from the Ghana squad was more precautionary rather than a result of a serious setback, the international manager’s comments will undoubtedly be great news for Mikel Arteta and his side ahead of such an important fixture this weekend.

Indeed, despite having already missed four league fixtures this season as a result of a thigh injury, the £32.4m-rated talent has nevertheless proven his importance to Arteta over the four top-flight games in which he has featured, making an average of 2.5 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, 50.8 passes and winning 6.3 duels – at a success rate of 51% – per outing.

These metrics have seen the £200k-per-week midfielder average an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 6.90, ranking him as Arsenal’s joint tenth-best player in the English top flight in 2022/23 – playing an influential role in the Gunners’ current top-of-the-table position.

The 29-year-old was also one of Arteta’s key players last time out, averaging a SofaScore match rating of 7.00 over his 24 Premier League appearances in 2021/22, seeing the former Atletico Madrid star rank as Arsenal’s fourth-best performer in the division last season.

It is performance levels such as these that have seen the 40-cap international earn a significant amount of praise from his manager, who said of Partey following a 3-0 win over Newcastle United back in January 2021:

“I am really happy. He got better and better as the game went on. He has a big influence and gave us things which were different from any other player. We have to protect him as he’s not played that much.”

Speaking after the same fixture, Granit Xhaka added of the Ghanaian: “He is very important to our team. He brings a lot of experience on a high level and he showed today how important he is for us and we are so happy.”

As such, should Partey be deemed available for the north London derby on Saturday afternoon, it is clear to see that the midfielder’s return would come as a huge boost to Arteta and his side – as a victory over Spurs would not only give their supporters the local bragging rights but also ensure the Gunners retain their first place standing in the league.

Aston Villa nearly signed Romelu Lukaku

Aston Villa made a monumental signing in the summer of 2012, as they tempted Christian Benteke to join them for a fee of just £7m.

Although he went on to be a raging success for the Villains, scoring 49 times in just 101 appearances, there was another hulking Belgian who could have joined in his place.

According to Birmingham Live, Paul Lambert had a host of high-profile names who might have joined instead that summer.

Headlining that list was Romelu Lukaku, as the former Villa manager said:

“Prior to signing Benteke, I spoke to (Romelu) Lukaku, and we also looked at signing (Kevin) de Bruyne on loan – when they were both kids at Chelsea.”

Everton would instead sign the Chelsea man just a few years later, with his goal-scoring exploits catapulting him to being the Toffees’ all-time top scorer in the Premier League.

In total, he scored 87 times in 166 appearances for the Merseyside outfit, as well as contributing 29 assists.

Their pursuit of the 29-year-old started with this loan move, ending with a permanent switch in 2014. Had Villa struck first instead, it could have been them who were blessed with this lethal forward who possessed far more speed than Benteke did as well as all the physical attributes.

It is these attributes that led to Italian football expert David Amoyal labelling him a “beast” as well as commending his goal-scoring prowess after moving to Inter Milan. He has enjoyed a fine career, and despite certain lulls and questions asked about his technical ability, he still has 275 total career goals.

One of these supposed lulls occurred during his stint at Manchester United, but ex-striker Andy Cole insisted he had been “phenomenal” following his debut season, where he had scored 27 in all competitions.

Although Benteke was a success, his transfer to Liverpool was abrupt and showed his liability to move to a bigger club at the first opportunity. Lukaku conversely stuck around at Everton far longer than was expected.

Had Lambert opted for him, they could’ve had guaranteed goals and a huge physical presence up front for a longer time, creating a more sustainable future for the club.

Instead, the season following his departure they were relegated.

Journalist fumes at ‘nightmare’ off-field Leeds news

Journalist Adam Pope has described Leeds United’s Saturday evening kick-off time as a ‘nightmare’, in what is a strange decision by the Premier League.

The Lowdown: Leeds kick-off time confirmed

The Whites are back in action this weekend after the international break, with Jesse Marsch’s side hosting Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.

Later on in October, Leeds make the trip to Anfield take face Liverpool and it has been confirmed as a 7.45pm kick-off on Saturday, October 29th. It means potential travel issues concerning train times, in what is a rare time for a Premier League match to be played.

The Latest: Pope bemoans

Taking to Twitter on Friday, Pope bemoaned the decision, describing the situation as a potential ‘nightmare’:

“Another nightmare for fans to get back from on public transport with the Liverpool game on a Saturday night.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-50/” title=”Latest Leeds United news” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Doesn’t make sense

The logistics of playing a Premier League game on a Saturday evening makes it a strange decision by those in charge, with money and television no doubt playing a big part in the decision alongside Liverpool’s Champions League commitments days later.

It is another case of fans not being thought of first, though, with those Leeds supporters travelling to Anfield possibly struggling to get home on the train.

The match could surely have been played at some other point in the weekend, even with the Reds having European football to think of, with the decision not making a lot of sense from the outside looking in.

McAvennie urges Rangers to drop Tillman

Former Scottish Premiership striker turned pundit Frank McAvennie has urged Giovanni van Bronckhorst to drop Malik Tillman for Glasgow Rangers.

The Lowdown: Poor Anfield showing

Tillman put in a poor performance last time out in the 2-0 loss away at Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.

The attacking midfielder recorded no shots on goal or dribbles, made just three accurate passes and only managed a mere 18 touches of the ball in total throughout the entire game (SofaScore).

He was heavily criticised for his work rate in the match, and so there are question marks over his form going into their clash at home to St. Mirren in the league on Saturday afternoon.

The Latest: Van Bronckhorst ‘has to drop’ Tillman

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie has claimed that Van Bronckhorst ‘has to drop’ Tillman ahead of their next fixture, and suggested that there may be an agreement with Bayern Munich that he has to play a certain number of games, which he dubbed ‘ridiculous’:

He is not having the best of times at the moment.

But there might be something in his agreement that he has got to play, which I think is ridiculous. If that is there the manager has to try and get it out of the contract because he has to drop him.

Gio has got to be able to say, ‘you’re not playing well, you’re not playing’.“

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-5/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Take out of the firing line

Following Tuesday’s poor performance, Van Bronckhorst should be looking to take Tillman out of the firing line.

There is a lot of pressure to perform having come from a club like Bayern, and while he showed signs of early promise, with three goal contributions in August, he has only managed one assist since then (Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, Tillman has only missed one match in both the league and Champions League combined so far this season, and so Saturday could be the best time to give him a rest.

West Ham: Moyes without Cornet for Southampton clash

West Ham United manager David Moyes will be without winger Maxwel Cornet again for their Premier League clash with Southampton.

The Lowdown: Hammers flying high…

The Hammers have picked up a stable run of form again after their torrid August and September months where they managed just one win against Aston Villa.

West Ham have picked up four victories in their last four games across all competitions, including solid wins against Wolves and Fulham between their UEFA Europa Conference League campaign.

The pressure has eased on Moyes’ position ahead of their clash on the south coast this afternoon and it is arguable they are favourites to come away from Southampton with all three points.

It appears West Ham have regained momentum just on time, but as per a new update, they will be without an ‘exciting’ player today.

The Latest: Moyes without Cornet for Southampton…

Giving a team news update ahead of their 2pm kick off, Moyes claims former Burnley star Cornet will be unavailable to feature again with the attacker still suffering from a calf strain.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news-5/” title=”West Ham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He explained (via whufc.com):

“Maxwel has had a small calf strain, so we have got to be careful with him. Obviously, he’s not available for the Southampton game.”

The Verdict: Setback…

Cornet finished 2021/2022 as Burnley’s top goal scorer and attempted their joint-highest rate of shots at goal per 90 – highlighting his real threat (WhoScored).

As West Ham seek to build upon their recent run, Cornet’s involvement could have provided that extra bit of sting in the attacking areas or, at the very least, could have been a solid option off the bench.

Alas, it appears supporters will have to wait longer for his return to action.

Man City now readying Kvaratskhelia move - report

Manchester City and sporting director Txiki Begiristain by extension are readying a move for Napoli star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Blues back to winning ways…

The Premier League champions, after a regrettable defeat at Anfield last weekend, are back to winning ways on the field with a 3-1 home win against Brighton on Saturday.

Two goals from the imperious Erling Haaland and a second half screamer from City legend Kevin De Bruyne sealed all three points at Eastlands as Pep Guardiola’s side climb to within a point of league leaders Arsenal.

The Sky Blues are in hot pursuit of a third successive league title as Guardiola seeks to maintain his side’s English football dominance, yet off the field, City transfer chief Begiristain remains busy.

The Latest: Txiki readying Kvaratskhelia move…

Indeed, as per a new report from Italy, it appears the club are eager to move for Serie A’s latest rising star Kvaratskhelia amid his meteoric rise.

Napoli Magazine claim City are among a host of sides looking to sign the Georgia international with Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid also interested.

As well as this, it is believed the Blues are ‘ready to swoop down’ for Kvaratskhelia with Begiristain and co allegedly preparing a move.

The Verdict: Exciting…

Called an ‘exciting’ talent and ‘sensation’ by members of the media, Napoli’s starlet looks like he is evolving into quite the player over in Italy.

As per WhoScored, the 21-year-old has five goals and three assists to his name already this season and currently ranks as their second-best performer by average match rating.

Kvaratskhelia also ranks in Napoli’s top three for attempts at goal, key passes made and successful take-ons per 90 domestically – leaving little wonder Eastlands hierarchy are now prepared to move for the winger.

Leeds: Reporter reacts to Wilfried Gnonto debut

Journalist James Horncastle admitted that he was ‘baffled’ that Leeds United head coach Jesse Marsch hadn’t used Wilfried Gnonto sooner following his debut against Liverpool.

The Lowdown: Anfield win

The Whites stunned Jurgen Klopp’s side in the Premier League on Saturday night, with Crysencio Summerville’s late strike sealing a 2-1 win. Gnonto played his part in the winner, with his nice play and cross leading to Patrick Bamford setting up Summerville.

The Italy international replaced Jack Harrison after 72 minutes and impressed, winning all three of his ground duels and completing 100% of his dribbles and crosses. [SofaScore]

The Latest: Horncastle reacts

Horncastle, who covers Serie A for The Athletic, took to Twitter after the win for Leeds on Saturday to talk about Gnonto.

The journalist, who also appears on BT Sport’s Champions League coverage, tweeted: “Gnonto makes things happen. Did so on his debut for Italy. Does so again tonight with ball in for Bamford and Cry. Bit baffled it’s taken this long to use him”.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-updates-10/” title=”Latest Leeds United updates” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Finally…

Leeds supporters had to remain patient to see Gnonto in action following his arrival at Elland Road on transfer deadline day, but it’s fair to say it was worth the wait as he made an impact on his first-team debut.

It was a bold move by Marsch to give the Italian his bow with the game finely poised, so credit is due to both player and manager as the 18-year-old helped the Whites to earn a first win since August with quality in the final third.

The headlines will go to Summerville, but hopefully the Leeds boss will be willing to give Gnonto more game-time against Bournemouth and Tottenham prior to the World Cup.
