Leeds fans wax lyrical about Mateusz Klich after fantastic stats emerge

Leeds United fans on Twitter have been praising Mateusz Klich after his fine performance against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.

Stats posted on social media by @LUFCDATA show just how impressive the Pole was on Sunday.

Indeed, the numbers show that he was prolific in terms of creating chances as he completed more passes in the final third than any other player on the pitch.

Fans were quick to wax lyrical about the 29-year-old after seeing these statistics, and it’s rather nice to see him being given some credit after receiving a little bit of criticism in recent weeks with calls to rest him.

This performance couldn’t have come at a better time either as the Poland international has just signed a new four-and-a-half-year deal, and he’s immediately shown why the club wanted to tie him down to a long-term contract.

Here’s what the Elland Road faithful have been saying on Twitter…

Micah Richards: Man City hero reveals his first impressions of Vincent Kompany

Micah Richards burst onto the scene through Manchester City’s academy ranks with his famous last-minute FA Cup equaliser against Aston Villa back in 2006, going on to swear in his post match interview due to his excitement, with supporters quickly taking to his friendly and personable nature.

Going on to cement his place in the team under Stuart Pearce as the Citizens’ first choice right-back, it was clear he was going to be a star for years to come, displaying an extraordinarily athletic build, pace, power and defensive maturity for his age.

Once Pearce headed out the exit door at the end of the 2006/2007 season, Richards really came into his own – partnering fellow cult hero Richard Dunne at centre-half during Sven Goran-Eriksson’s reign and earning his first ever international call-up, scoring a bullet header against Israel at Wembley.

The Englishman eventually became a real fan favourite over the course of his decade-long stay with the blues, making 246 appearances and helping to win their first pieces of silverware during the dawn of the Sheikh Mansour era – hoisting the 2011 FA Cup aloft with an historic first Premier League title in 44 years just one season later.

He did this alongside fellow club legend Vincent Kompany, who contributed hugely to City’s trophy haul over the last ten seasons. He played under three different managers and won a grand total of four league titles, four League Cups, three Community Shields and two FA cups in that time.

However, speaking in an interview as part of a Bwin campaign, Richards has revealed that his teammates and himself didn’t exactly have the best first impression of Kompany’s ability following his arrival at the Etihad in 2008.

“Defensive signings, I think the first person who took us to the next level was Vincent Kompany,” explained the 31-year-old.

“The first memory of Kompany, we all thought, I’m not going to say average but just a good midfielder. But in training he had really good skills and stuff, but his shooting was awful.

“You could see Aguero saying like ‘Pass, pass the ball’. That’s the sort of player he is, in the big games he performs.

“He is, for me, one of City’s best ever defenders.”

Of course, over the years, it’s clear the Belgian had a chance to practice his shooting – made evident by his winning goal against Leicester back in May, when he drove an unstoppable shot into the top corner past Kasper Schmeichel to win City a crucial game in the Premier League title race.

With Kompany now plying his trade in a player-coach capacity at Anderlecht, and Richards having retired from the game due to a niggling knee problem, Sky Blues supporters can now fondly look back at the legacy these star men have left behind.

Spurs fans slam Eddie Howe as potential Pochettino replacement

Tottenham Hotspur are currently experiencing some tough times over in the Premier League.

The north London outfit are sitting in 14th place in the table and have just sacked Mauricio Pochettino, while there are no clear signs of an immediate fix for their problems.

And prior to the confirmation of Pochettino’s departure, The Daily Mail came out with some concrete names of mangers that could be chosen by Spurs as the Argentine’s successor.

One of them was Eddie Howe, the current Bournemouth coach. Having initially overseen their rise through the Football League, Howe has the Cherries in a respectable ninth place this season – albeit only two points ahead of Spurs.

But upon seeing this update, many Spurs fans simply couldn’t believe that he is even being considered for the gig as they feel he is simply not good enough.

They swarmed Twitter and social media with their replies, mostly in disbelief of this new update.

Leeds United: Illan Meslier permanent deal may be tied up by July 1st

According to a report from Football Insider, a permanent deal for Leeds United loanee ‘keeper Illan Meslier may be tied up by 1st July – with the future of four other temporary Whites players still up for discussion.

Meslier, who has stepped in to replace banned shot-stopper Kiko Casilla after his ban last month, is still yet to concede a goal in the Championship – keeping two clean sheets in two league outings.

Now, as revealed by Football Insider, the Frenchman could sign at Elland Road on a permanent deal by the start of July – especially after Leeds told his parent club Lorient that they intend to ‘push through’ a £5 million deal.

Indeed, the 20-year-old looks like he could be United’s first signing of the summer window, but is he worth it?

According to FootyStats, while Meslier currently holds a 100% clean sheet ratio over his extremely limited two league outings, it’s clear that he does possess quality given his record over regular appearances last season.

The youngster conceded just 30 goals in 28 Ligue 2 matches for Lorient over 2018/2019, boasting a fairly solid record, but Meslier did only manage nine clean sheets in that time. While there is plenty of debate to be had over the legitimacy over this signing, it’s clear that Meslier holds plenty of potential for a meagre £5 million fee.

Everton blow the title race wide open with incredible Manchester United draw

Everton against Manchester United at Old Trafford in 2012.

United are still attempting to win the Premier League title, Manchester City are in the race too. United hold the lead. The clash at Old Trafford offers an opportunity for Sir Alex Ferguson’s men to ensure they retain the advantage and, potentially, bin off City’s hopes too.

Everton had lost to Liverpool in an emotionally-charged FA Cup semi-final the week prior, leaving them hunting a seventh-placed finish.

United had already pulled back a mid-season points deficit (not to mention shook off a humiliating 6-1 derby reverse on their own turf back in October) and with arguably the inferior squad, managed to pull away from their noisy neighbours in typically imperious fashion. With six games to go the Red Devils were eight points clear and nearly home and dry, but a shock defeat to Wigan made things interesting again.

Now, with four games to go the situation was clear – draw or lose to Everton (and see their hated rivals better relegation-haunted Wolves later that Sunday) and the following week’s derby would give City the opportunity to get their noses in front on the final bend. Win today and no matter what happened at Wolves, United would enter the derby five points ahead with just three to play.

So nerves understandably became frayed when Everton’s January signing Nikica Jelavic looped home an opener after half an hour, a goal just as keenly celebrated in east Manchester as it was across one half of Merseyside.

It was to United’s huge credit that they took this in their stride with Wayne Rooney leveling matters just before the break and then euphoria broke out in the Stretford End when Danny Welbeck brilliantly set himself up for a curled effort approaching the hour mark. That euphoria was greeted with songs about winning the league when Nani made it 3-1 moments later.

Tensions were now suitably eased but the singing and celebrations were still cut through with bravado because even when two goals down, Everton – who had nothing to lose – were clearly up for it.

In midfield a fascinating four-way duel was being duked out between Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick and their ex-team-mates Darron Gibson and Phil Neville and repeatedly the former United stalwarts were gaining the upper hand. This was evidenced mid-way through the second period when the ball was combatively won and spread out wide. The resulting in-swinger was met forcibly by Marouane Fellaini, reducing the arrears.

A mere two minutes later and the two-goal lead and precious breathing space was restored when Rooney (ye gods, how many players have these two clubs swapped back and to in recent years?) finished off a sweeping move and when Nani thundered a header against a post soon after the narrative was established for the remainder of the game. United were never content to simply win such meaningful fixtures but to win them with a swaggering style.

But then Jelavic prodded home his second and with seven minutes left on the clock that narrative was shredded like the home fans’ nerves. They couldn’t, could they? They wouldn’t?

They did. In the game’s late knockings Fellaini displayed some uncharacteristic nifty footwork inside of the United box and squared a perfect pass across for Pienaar, who only had to redirect it goal-bound.

“A throw away,” was how Ferguson described his team’s collapse once it had been absorbed. “An absolute giveaway. I can’t believe it”.

His credulity was stretched even further three weeks later. Aguerrooooo.

What happened next?

Everton secured seventh along with a lifetime’s worth of gratitude from City supporters.

Manchester United saw a 13th title snatched from them in the most incredible of circumstances forcing Ferguson to postpone his retirement plans.

Ex-Leeds ace Danny Rose backed to make Elland Road return

Speaking to Football Insider, Kevin Phillips has backed Danny Rose to make a return to Leeds this summer.

What did he say?

The Tottenham defender was born in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, and was a part of the Leeds academy when making his first steps into professional football.

Spurs signed him in the summer of 2007, and he has since made 214 appearances for the north London side, although he has spent the second-half of this current campaign on loan at Newcastle.

Now, Phillips has backed the left-back to return back home this summer, and insisted that he still has the quality to be a key performer for Leeds if they manage to secure promotion back to the top-flight.

He said: “It would not surprise me. You see it quite often that players from that area end up back at the club. Danny Rose has got the Premier League experience and can still do it. He is still a class left-back.

“I am sure the new owners at Newcastle would like to keep Rose but the player could be tempted by a move to Yorkshire and be a part of what Leeds are building there. That experience would help the squad. It would not surprise me if he pitched up at Leeds whenever the transfer window open – assuming Leeds going up.”

Reunion

More than the sentimental value of Rose returning back to where it all started for him, he could still provide some much-needed quality on the pitch too.

This is a Premier League-proven player who up until very recently was still playing at the highest level of the Champions League, and could add some real competition for the left-back slot at Elland Road.

Having players like Rose and Kalvin Phillips in the team’s ranks just ensures Leeds stays true to its roots, and bolsters that connection between the fans and the players. Depending on the price involved, this could well be a smart addition for plenty of reasons.

Leeds fans go berserk over Graham Smyth claim

Leeds United are ever so close to ending a 16-year wait for Premier League football at Elland Road, but reports emerging this week suggest that the current Championship season is now ‘unlikely to be played to completion.’

Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Graham Smyth revealed that the football season outside of the English top-flight is probably not going to resume, meaning the Whites could go up without kicking a ball again this term – depending on how the EFL choose to decide the final outcome.

A true test for any Leeds fan: Can you match these iconic images with the right results?

France’s Ligue 1 ended their season this week with the standings being decided by a points-per-game system, which has caused some controversy as Lyon, who were fifth, ended up finishing seventh – and they could pursue legal action as a result.

Leeds have always maintained that the Championship campaign should be finished when it is safe to do so, but the decision is out of their hands.

Supporters have been reacting to news on social media after Smyth tweeted his article, here’s what some of the United faithful have been saying…

Newcastle takeover hit with fresh twist over Saudi piracy

Newcastle United’s prospective £300m takeover has taken a new path this week after reports emerged firing doubt over its completion.

The Guardian revealed exclusively that the Saudi Arabian-funded deal is in major doubt following the World Trade Organisation’s ruling that pirate satellite TV and streaming service beoutQ was indeed coming from the Middle Eastern state.

It’s claimed that the final report will not be published until mid-June but it will expose the Saudi government being behind the illegal streaming of sports events across the globe.

As a result of the WTO’s conclusions, the Magpies’ takeover is on the ropes with the threat of those involved committing a ‘breach of international law’.

Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman and governor of the public investment fund Yasir Al-Rumayyan are both involved in consortium willing to purchase the north east outfit from controversial owner Mike Ashley – but the WTO report suggests there is a clear link between the pair and the beoutQ service.

Although it is thought that this has been strongly denied by United’s prospective owners.

Think you’re a big Magpies fan? Can you name these former players by looking at their careers? Go on, give it a go…

It’s quickly approaching two months since the Premier League were asked for approval by the aforementioned parties – a process that should have taken around 30 days.

But the whole process has been made all that more complicated by these allegations, which has caused the delay to any official decision on the PL’s part.

This one could well continue to rumble on especially with the top-flight entering the next phase of ‘Project Restart’ which would see teams return to normal training – a decision that could be made today.

Charlton: A new interested takeover party has appeared in the form of a Portuguese consortium

Charlton Athletic have been handed another potential takeover boost as interest from a new party has been registered.

Corporate Football Organisation Portugal have reportedly made an attempt to buy Charlton from current owners East Street Investments (via Sky Sports). The consortium have highlighted a five-year plan which will push for the Addicks to return to the Premier League, claiming the model is based on the growing success of Wolves.

Consortium CEO Fernando Corte-Real has commented that the brand’s goal is to ‘give Charlton’s glory back to the supporters’.

The Addicks have had a turbulent season after tumbling down the Championship table into the relegation zone and a lot of uncertainty surrounding ownership. ESI took over the club in January from Roland Duchatelet, but the relationship between the shareholders and the fans has been toxic.

CFO Portugal are reportedly expecting a decision from the club very soon as ‘timing is crucial’. Corte-Real has said the consortium sees a big chance to take the club to success and an opportunity to make profit and hoist Charlton back into the limelight.

“We made two kinds of offers,” the CEO continued. “One to acquire the majority of the ownership and shortly afterwards we made another one for assuming commitments in exchange for majority of ownership.”

Corte-Real also said it was very much in the plan to also buy The Valley and the training ground as ‘these assets are part of Charlton itself’.

This means that there are now two known parties interested in taking control of the Addicks, with ex-Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins having also thrown his hat into the ring (BBC Sport).

Player Zone: Manchester City’s Leroy Sane may finally have his chance to make headlines on the pitch

Leroy Sane might not have played for Manchester City’s first team for more than 10 months but his name has rarely been far from the headlines in recent weeks and months.

The German winger has yet to feature in the 2019/20 Premier League after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in the Community Shield against Liverpool last August, although he should be available for Wednesday night’s clash against Arsenal having recovered from that huge setback (as per Sky Sports).

While neither Sane nor his Etihad Stadium team-mates were in action over the last three months, the 24-year-old was regularly in the news amid ongoing speculation linking him with a summer move to Bayern Munich. The Bundesliga champions continue to focus their transfer efforts on trying to sign the Manchester City winger, according to the Daily Mail at the weekend.

Sane actually made a tentative comeback for the under-23 side in a Premier League 2 game against their Arsenal counterparts at the end of February, although he didn’t get the chance to return to first team action before the season was halted three months ago as the coronavirus pandemic swept across the UK.

The contribution of 30 goals over the previous two seasons shows that the German can be a hugely effective presence in Manchester City’s attack, while goals from his preferred left flank were proving hard to come by before the season’s enforced stoppage as Raheem Sterling had not found the net in the first two months of 2020.

It remains to be seen whether Sane will be rusty upon his comeback, having gone so long without playing a competitive first team fixture. However, the 24-year-old has a happy record against Wednesday night’s opponents. He has won five of his previous seven games against Arsenal, with three goals in those fixtures, while Liverpool are the only club against whom he has found the net more often during his professional career.

The continuation of that fine record against the Gunners this week would be the perfect way for Sane to lay the ghosts of his injury anguish and make headlines for what he has done on the pitch rather than what others are speculating about his future off it.

Man City fans, will Sane make a triumphant comeback to action after his 10-month injury layoff? Give us your thoughts in the comments section below!
