Liverpool eye move for Gavi

Liverpool are ready to launch a bid that would see Barcelona’s teenage midfielder join the club in what could be a bargain in today’s transfer market.

Gavi’s current contract with Barcelona is set to expire in the summer of 2023.

His performances this season have put him on a pedestal in which he can negotiate contract details with Barcelona, knowing that he has piqued the interest of some of Europe’s finest clubs.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

With this being his breakout season, Gavi is understandably one of the lowest-paid players at the club, and although the 17-year-old is willing to renew his contract with the Blaugrana, a large stumbling block is that he wants his contract to reflect his value to Barcelona.

Liverpool’s interest has intensified, with the Anfield side looking to test Barcelona’s resolve by offering to pay Gavi’s £41m release clause, according to reports from Sport.

Iniesta revived

If Liverpool can acquire Gavi’s services for around £41m, then that is an absolute bargain for a player who is currently valued at £54m by Transfermarkt.

Perhaps the best thing to happen to Gavi was the financial debacle that Barcelona found themselves in, which meant that they were forced to rely on youth to get them out of trouble.

The scenario meant that Gavi, who has been described as “phenomenal” by The Athletic’s Dermot Corrigan on Twitter, was given the platform to shine in Spain’s top division.

Which has now lead to the 17-year-old having the world at his feet, with pending contract talks bound to worry Barcelona fans.

Comparisons have been made to Andres Iniesta with Jamie Redknapp hailing his performance against France last year and claiming he takes the ball on the half-turn like the great Spaniard. Further compliments come courtesy of reporter David Sánchez de Castro who suggested he is “Iniesta revived.”

The LaLiga Twitter account meanwhile dubbed him a “magician” after his first-team debut, providing evidence that he has been highly rated for a considerable period of time.

As a result, the Reds faithful will be keen for the club to get this deal wrapped up, with the likes of Henderson and Thiago (both 31) not exactly getting any younger.

Liverpool have space in their midfield for Gavi, and his playing style would enable him to slot into Klopp’s set-up seamlessly.

This could be the cheapest Gavi will ever be, and the recent success of Liverpool could persuade the young Spaniard to join one of his idols in Thiago in the Premier League.

Ponting's lapse adds to Australia's struggles

New South Wales, who are crammed with Test stars, were dismissed for 190 on the second day, with Shane Watson, Simon Katich and Brad Haddin again going without making a significant impact. In another worrying sign for Australia, Ponting was out late in the day when hooking Shane Watson to fine leg for 27. Not only did the dismissal by his team-mate stop Ponting from a long stay, it also ensured he would be peppered with short balls by England at the Gabba next week.Watson finished with 2 for 17 off seven overs after having Jon Wells lbw in the same over he claimed Ponting. Tasmania were 3 for 73 at stumps, still requiring 90 in the testing conditions.Katich’s 36 was the top score for the Blues – he showed no lingering effects from the shoulder hurt on Wednesday – as they improved on their first-innings 97. Xavier Doherty took the lead in the head-to-head battle with Nathan Hauritz, who was called for the final over of the day in his only offerings of the game so far.Doherty, who delivered four overs in the first innings, collected 2 for 45 off 20, including bowling Katich around his legs. His opening breakthrough came when Moises Henriques pushed one to Ponting at short cover, while the offspinner Jason Krejza also gained a couple of wickets.Doherty was also responsible for the run-out of Watson, who added 15 to his first-innings score of 6. New South Wales’ top seven all reached double figures – Haddin got 17 – but none could go on against the visitors’ willing attack.

Sialkot crush Faisalabad by nine wickets

A round-up of the second day of the ninth round of Division One of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Dec-2010Sialkot completed a crushing nine-wicket win against Faisalabad in Sargodha on a tumultuous second day during which three innings were played. Left-arm spinner Hasan Mahmood had taken best figures of 7 for 51 to restrict Sialkot to 187, a lead of 99. Fast bowler Waqas Ahmed replied in kind with 6 for 66 as Faisalabad limped to 132. Asif Hussain (49) and Mahmood (45) fought back, but Waqas dismissed them both, and apart from the duo, no other Faisalabad batsman passed 15. Sialkot knocked off the 34 runs needed without fuss, losing only Faisal Rasheed’s wicket.Rawalpindi were eyeing victory on the second evening in Bahawalpur, as Multan were tottering at 93 for 6 with another 100 runs needed. Seamers Sadaf Hussain and Rashid Latif did the damage, taking three wickets apiece. Abdur Rauf and Tahir Maqsood, Multan’s new-ball pair, had earlier repeated their first-innings performance, taking seven wickets between them as Rawalpindi were dismissed for 151. Had the lower middle order not resisted, Rawalpindi would not have gone beyond 125, as they were struggling at 88 for 6 at one stage. Multan will take heart from that resistance, and hope they are able to put up a similar show tomorrow.Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited took charge against Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, reducing them to 127 for 6 after posting 362. ZTBL’s seam trio of Sohail Tanvir, Iftikhar Anjum and Mohammad Khalil took two wickets apiece as SNGPL tottered. Only Raza Ali Dar resisted with a patient unbeaten half-century. Haris Sohail (86) had earlier boosted ZTBL past 350 even as the lower order was skittled by medium-pacer Imran Ali, who took 4 for 55.A solid top-order batting performance gave Pakistan International Airlines a sizeable lead against Habib Bank in Faisalabad. Khurram Manzoor, playing his first game of the tournament, top scored with 94, and was supported by Agha Sabir (36) and captain Kamran Sajid (30). However, seamer Sarmad Anwar struck back for Habib Bank, picking up 5 for 89 to restrict PIA to 333 for 9. Danish Kaneria could manage only 1 for 99 though as PIA still got away to a 122-run lead. Pakistan batsman Faisal Iqbal remained unbeaten on 68. Habib Bank did not help their cause, bowling 32 no-balls.Half-centuries from Nauman Masood and Imad Wasim took Islamabad past Karachi Blues at the Diamond Club Ground. Islamabad had to work hard to eke out the 49-run lead, and had lost seven wickets for 204 in response to Karachi’s 237 at one stage. Imad and captain Rauf Akbar (47) took them past Karachi before they were bowled out for 286. All Karachi bowlers except Tabish Khan were among the wickets, and his bowling partner Babar Rehman led the way with 3 for 55. Karachi had wiped off 17 runs from the deficit in three overs by stumps.Naumanullah’s century and his partnership with Kamran Akmal (56) led National Bank of Pakistan’s strong reply against Water and Power Development Authority in Sialkot. After losing three wickets for 75, NBP were steadied by the duo, both of whom played busy knocks. Qaiser Abbas ensured NBP did not lose momentum, smashing an unbeaten 46 that took his side seven runs short of taking the lead at 264 for 5. Kashif Raza took 3 for 54 but lacked support from the other bowlers, including Naved-ul-Hasan who went wicketless in twenty overs. WAPDA had earlier been bowled out for 271, Rafatullah Mohmand going caught behind for 99. Kamran Akmal finished with seven catches behind the stumps, and Mohammad Talha ended with 5 for 51.

Wolves must unleash Leonardo Campana

Wolves may already own an asset who can help them to rectify their lack of goals, and you may struggle to guess who that is…

Struggling to score

Wolverhampton Wanderers have struggled to score goals this season, with Bruno Lage’s side netting just 33 goals in the Premier League – a stat that means they are the fifth worst attacking side in the league with an average of just one goal per match.

The Molineux side’s top goal scorer in the Premier League this season is Raul Jimenez with just six goals – a tally that sees the Mexican rank 45th in the league’s goal-scoring charts this campaign.

The season has not been prosperous for Jimenez, who has missed the most big chances in the Wolves side this season with eight missed.

On the chalkboard

Lage is admittedly frustrated with Wolves’ lack of goals this season as he stated after the 1-0 defeat to Burnley: “We are not scoring goals, we are not taking our chances since the first day.”

One of the Old Gold’s loan stars, however, is not experiencing the same feelings as Lage or Wolves. That man is Learnardo Campana – a player “who can’t stop scoring” according to the MLS via Twitter.

6 foot 2 Campana, who has not played a single minute for Wolves’ first team, is lighting up the MLS with David Beckham-owned Inter Miami CF.

The 21-year-old Ecuadorian has seized his opportunity in Phil Neville’s side this season, netting second top scorer in the league and meaning he has outscored Gonzalo Higuain so far this season.

Campana’s form has seen him bench the former Real Madrid bagsman and his hat-trick in the 3-2 win against New England Revolution would have sent a clear message to Bruno Lage.

With the season in America not long starting, Campana has notched up a total of six goals in 29 matches in the league this season for Wolves.

If Lage wants him for next season, he will have to convince the player directly, with Inter Miami holding an option to buy clause.

If not, this could potentially turn out to be a big mistake for the Old Gold who would see Campana as one that got away…

Arsenal could have Calvert-Lewin doubts

Arsenal may be hesitant about making a big-money move for Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin off the back of his ‘really poor season’.

That’s according to journalist Paul Brown, who was speaking to GiveMeSport.

The lowdown

The Athletic reported in the final week of the January transfer window that the Gunners intended to sign one of Calvert-Lewin, Dusan Vlahovic or Alexander Isak. The Serbian would ultimately join Juventus, while the other two targets stayed put at Everton and Real Sociedad respectively.

Calvert-Lewin hit 21 goals in all competitions during the 2020/21 season but has only managed three in a heavily disrupted 2021/22 campaign. The Englishman fractured his toe just three games into the season and duly spent four months on the sidelines.

Under contract at Goodison Park until June 2025, the 25-year-old is currently valued at £37.8m by Transfermarkt.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-5/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The latest

Brown has said that Arsenal have previously made a concerted effort to sign Calvert-Lewin, but hinted that they may be having second thoughts over him now as he ‘doesn’t look like the same player’ following his injury-plagued campaign.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “Calvert-Lewin, who I’m told is the guy they really pushed for.

“The fact that he’s hardly played the last few weeks and has had a really poor season and doesn’t look like the same player might make them think twice about spending too much money on him, but I do think that’s the type of player Arsenal want.”

The verdict

Mikel Arteta and Arsenal may choose to focus on the best version of Calvert-Lewin and put his woes this season to one side. The 25-year-old simply hasn’t been able to gain any sort of rhythm, failing to start more than three Premier League games on the bounce at any point.

On top of that, things have somewhat fallen apart for Everton, with Rafael Benitez sacked in January and the Blues now fighting to avoid a first-ever relegation from the Premier League.

That said, his value will surely be lower now than it was 12 months ago, so prospective suitors may sense an opportunity to land a comparative bargain if they make their move this summer.

South Australia vanquish Victoria, to host final

South Australia Redbacks spun their way to victory over the Victoria Bushrangers at the MCG – guaranteeing them the top spot and a home final on February 5

The Redbacks spinners Adil Rashid, Nathan Lyon and Aaron O’Brien restricted the hosts to a seemingly below-par score of 4 for 144, on a somewhat slow deck, and their batsmen knocked off the runs with five wickets to spare. It could have been much worse for the Bushrangers, but big-hitting wicketkeeper Matthew Wade (52 off 31 balls) saved their blushes, smashing 41 of the 43 runs scored in the final three overs.Michael Klinger started positively for the Redbacks but was run out thanks to some brilliant outfielding from Evan Gulbis. Aiden Blizzard looked sharp in the time he was at the crease, but was dismissed by a Brad Hodge full toss – caught at deep midwicket when he would have normally put it into the stands.Callum Ferguson fell cheaply before Daniel Harris and Cameron Borgas steadied the innings, leaving room for a cameo from Daniel Christian (28 off 17) to seal the match. Young spinner Jon Holland was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts, finishing with 2 for 23.The reigning champions have now been condemned to a bottom-place finish while the Redbacks have eight days off before they play the final at home on February 5. New South Wales play Queensland on Saturday night to decide where the Preliminary Final will be played against Tasmania.

Newcastle: Luke Edwards reveals PIF transfer plan

Newcastle United are planning to recruit between four and six players this summer, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards says.

The lowdown

Newcastle are gearing up for their first summer transfer window since their Saudi-led takeover went through in the autumn.

In January, the new owners sanctioned a record £90million spend on five new players – Bruno Guimaraes, Chris Wood, Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn and loan signing Matt Targett.

Edwards has previously reported that they’re unlikely to shell out quite that much in the summer market.

The goal may now be to secure at least a top-half finish after Eddie Howe guided his bolstered squad away from relegation trouble.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-6/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The latest

Edwards tweeted on Monday afternoon that ‘multiple sources have confirmed’ Newcastle’s ‘plan’ to bring in ‘between four and six’ new faces ‘to boost first team strength’.

The amount the club can generate through sales will be important, he adds.

They’re also ‘looking closely’ at the loan market and are ‘likely’ to dip into it for ‘at least one’ player ‘towards the end of the window’.

The verdict

Who might some of the new faces be at St James’ Park? Well, one likely addition appears to be Targett on a permanent deal.

Transfer insider Dean Jones said recently the Aston Villa-owned defender had become their ‘number one’ target and that they were looking to swiftly tie up a deal that could be worth £15million.

And according to The Daily Mail, they’re also working on a deal for Jesse Lingard, who wouldn’t demand a transfer fee as he reaches the end of his Manchester United contract.

Predominant frugality could theoretically allow the Magpies to make one blockbuster addition and stay within the confines of their budget.

Celtic: Joseph provides Jeahze update

Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph has provided an update regarding Celtic and the pursuit of Hammarby left-back Mohanad Jeahze, with the Hoops in negotiations over a £2million move.

The lowdown: Hoops officials visit Sweden

The Hoops have been heavily linked with a move for the Iraq international in recent weeks as Ange Postecoglou attempts to kickstart the summer transfer business.

Born in Sweden, the 25-year-old has spent his entire professional career in the Scandinavian nation, winning the national cup in 2021.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-6/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Hoops officials were even sent to the player’s club recently and Hammarby’ s own sporting director, Jesper Jansson, admitted that there is ‘certainly an interest’.

Now, a move to Scotland could be edging ever closer for the four-cap ace, who was hailed as ‘really class’ by teammate Darijan Bojanic…

The latest: Joseph reveals £2m talks

Taking to Twitter with a fresh update, Joesph has suggested that the deal is close to coming to fruition for the Hoops, with talks well underway and a £2m offer ‘on the table’.

“Celtic are in advanced talks with Hammarby over a deal to sign left-back Mohanad Jeahze. It’s understood the 25-year-old Iraq international told the Swedish club he wants to move to Scotland. A deal in the region of £2m is on the table & talks have progressed quickly today.”

The verdict: Shrewd capture

The Bhoys look set to embark on a crucial summer as Postecoglou bolsters the Celtic Park ranks ready for Champions League football.

Described as possessing an ‘elite mentality’ by Alternativ Hammarby (via Everything Celtic) on Twitter, the swashbuckling full-back has scored once and provided five assists in 14 appearances this season, indications of a desire to attack that would be perfectly suited to Postecoglou’s system at Parkhead.

Overall, the Iraqi ace has earned a magnificent 7.63 Sofascore rating so far in the 2022 Allsvenskan, making 2.3 interceptions, 2.7 tackles and 1.2 clearances on average per game to highlight his defensive acumen to accompany his attacking prowess.

To put those numbers in perspective, no player in the Celtic squad with more than two appearances averages more than 1.6 tackles or 1.6 interceptions per game.

Jeahze – who was also a reported target for Polish outfit Lech Poznan – has a little over 14 months remaining on his deal in Sweden and at the mooted £2million should be regarded as a smart signing who will perhaps arrive as direct competition for Greg Taylor.

In other news, one Celtic player has been backed to leave the club. Find out who it is here.

New South Wales take sixth straight WNCL title

Sydney’s wet weather played its part as the Breakers were easily ahead of where they needed to be on the Duckworth-Lewis method when the match was abandoned after 34.1 overs of their chase. The home side sent Victoria in but would have been hoping to restrict the scoring a little more than they did. Victoria’s captain Rachael Haynes top scored with 68 after a couple of early wickets to Sharon Millanta threatened to keep the Spirit down to a much lower total.Haynes and Emma Inglis (47 from 44 balls) kept the scoreboard ticking over, but the strength of the New South Wales batting line-up was always going to be hard to contain. Leah Poulton made a run-a-ball 51 to get the chase off to an excellent start and her opening partner, Blackwell, kept things on track despite two wickets to Sarah Elliott.Sarah Coyte was unbeaten on 44 and Blackwell had 68 when the rain arrived, and it was enough to end Victoria’s hopes of taking their second title of the summer, after they beat the Breakers in the Twenty20 final. New South Wales now have the remarkable record of having won 12 of the past 14 WNCL titles.
